On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we have three distinct topics to dive into as we revisit fun or interesting topics from the past: When To End A Franchise, What It Means To Be A Film Critic, and our 80s Family Movie Battle Royale. First, we take a look at more of these tired franchises that keep popping back up. Sure, Saw X was well-received while Expendables 4 wasn't, but did we even need to get to this point? When IS a good time to end a franchise? Also, are we – the fans – truly the problem? Next, there has much ado lately about film critics: how genuine are the reviews, should outside influences interfere with a review, how much studios interfere, etc. Well, this week, due to a recent onslaught of activity over an Amber Heard review for In the Fire, we are taking this topic head-on. Finally, we're determining which '80s family movie is the best, why we love them, and defending them with our last dying breath. Okay, maybe not that serious, but we are taking them into battle. Joined by our special Patreon guest who bought her way onto the show (yes, that is indeed a perk), Kristina Flores, the four of us each have two movies we bring to the ring and knock 'em down until we land on just one. Titles like Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Goonies, and E.T. – you don't want to miss out on who takes home the title AND which one landed in the listener top 10 but just wasn't good enough for us. (0:00 – 29:17) When To End A Franchise (29:18 – 1:11:50) What It Means To Be A Film Critic (1:11:51 – 2:05:42) 80s Family Movie Battle Royale Listen to our new podcast, Inspired By A True Story, now available in your favorite podcast feed! Fancy setting us a gaming challenge? Get in touch here!In this episode of the Gaming Blender podcast, Scott and Matthew discuss a hypothetical game called Last Clan Standing. The game is set in a country that has fallen into anarchy after the death of a long-serving dictator. The country has splintered into small rival factions resembling criminal syndicates. These factions compete against each other to raid local countries' trade routes, such as oil tankers, trains, and cruise liners. The game incorporates elements of a Battle Royale, interactive movie, and base building. One player controls the interactive movie and base building, while other players represent rival factions. The goal is to be the last clan standing and secure valuable resources. Thanks for listening and please leave us a review and subscribe if you enjoyed it. Hold up. Before you go any further, I'm gonna need you to take a sip of this holy water. It's not that I don't trust you, but you look like the kind of person who would consort with demonic entities and vampiric overlords. It is the final Versus battle of the season and it's a real nail biter. Two hosts. Two movies. Two films that neither Dave or Chris have seen before. Listen to hear which is the definitive vampire movie and whose gamble paid off.

30 years ago, Dale Fetzer was the military choreographer during the shooting of the movie "Gettysburg". Last October, while in town to shoot a special video for the ABT, Dale agreed to come on the show and talk about the daunting task of choreographing a battle for a major motion picture. First up, our Movie Battle Royale returns! If you have never listened before, we take eight finalists from any genre – this time it is the horror sequel – and whittle them down until we come to one absolute winner, crowning that film as the greatest to ever exist in its respective genre! There are some fantastic films to choose from here as well, such as: Aliens, Hellraiser 2, Blade 2, Evil Dead 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Doctor Sleep, Dawn of the Dead, Army of Darkness, A Quiet Place 2, Scream 4, Friday the 13th: New Blood, and so many more. So many gems, but only ONE winner of The Hollywood Outsider Horror Sequel Movie Battle Royale! Then we reflect on a bit of lost history: commercials. Remember those? These little nuggets of cinema used to tell us what to buy and consume, and since streaming has taken over, we barely pay them any attention at all. What were your favorite commercials? We conclude with discussing the perfect antihero, what makes one our favorite, and whether we have too many or too little of these characters in entertainment. Antiheroes seem to be the fan-favorites, so what is it about them that we love or connect to so much? Discussed on this episode (0:00 – 54:40) Horror Sequel Movie Battle Royale (54:41 – 1:14:28) Favorite Commercials (1:14:29 – 1:52:30) The Perfect Antihero Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content like our Bad Movie Night by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group

This week, we review the under-rated and under-appreciated military sci-fi, alien invasion thriller, "Battle: Los Angeles." And, we have a lot of nice things to say about it. No, really, we do. The four of us like or love it to varying degrees, but I think we're all a bit baffled as to this movie's low scores & negative reviews. - How many cast & crew names does Todd butcher during the rundown? - Which co-host(s) agreed that this is not a deep or thoughtful movie (at least not all the time) but that it does have great moments & depicts people being well-trained, skilled, and working well together? - Which co-host(s) appreciated the movie's small mission for its protagonists, rather than the save-the-whole-world-at-once missions common in more typical Hollywood action movies? - What strategies & other military aspects of both the humans & the aliens did the co-hosts appreciate. - Which co-host brought up the movie's appreciable lack of shaky-cam, and how many co-hosts immediately agreed? - What other cinematic techniques & narrative aspects did the co-hosts like in the movie? - There's one scene that is a favorite of 3 or 4 of the co-hosts because of how smart & well-trained it depicts a main character. What is the scene, and who was the first one to bring it up? - Which co-host teared up a little bit upon the last line of dialogue in the movie, and which co-host had the last line of the movie as a major nitpick? - And, which co-host gave this a top rating? Listen now for the answers to these and other questions. Grab your 8 to 10 magazines of ammunition, first aid kit, combat rifle & bayonet, bivy shelter & sleeping bag, poncho, knee & elbow pads, multi-tool, helmet with night vision optics, 3 MREs, 1 gallon of water, extra socks & undergarments, 2 to 4 grenades, a white smoke grenade, a yellow smoke grenade, a thermite grenade, a phosphorus grenade, handgun, and assorted maps & compasses -- all 65 pounds of typical Marine gear -- as we face off against aliens in Battle: Los Angeles. And, be careful. That's "Battle - colon (:) - Los Angeles." "Battle *of* Los Angeles" is a TV movie made for Syfy by The Asylum. Stay tuned in future weeks for our reviews of Jack the Ripper thriller, "From Hell;" one of the best conclusions to one of the best trilogies, "Back to the Future, Part 3;" and the romantic time-travel fantasy, "About Time" (probably in that order, but BttF3 definitely episode #088). We have to discuss it more internally, but hopefully we'll have another installment each of Alpha-Movie-Bet and What Should Andruw Watch? before our season 2 finale (episode 100). For years listeners have been asking us “Who is your favorite guest judge?” & “What episodes should I listen to first?” This week Duelers we bring you the first Dueling Decades Rerun! A hand-picked selection of some of our favorite episodes and moments here on everyone's favorite adults-only retro game show! This episode was extra special to all of us on Dueling Decades because, like many of you, we spent our formative teen years watching Rhonda Shear on USA's UP All Night! Not only was Rhonda amazing, but she also introduced us to a whole new world of movies that we might never have seen. Had it not been for Rhonda and UP All Night, we might've never found the love for B-Movies that we have today! Our parents also thank Rhonda for being a free babysitter on Friday & Saturday nights as we sat there until the wee hours of the morning watching Reform School Girls and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, much appreciated! Sit back, relax, and re-live some of the best B-Movies had to offer. Brent Hand from Hysteria 51 is back and brought the very best of B-Movies from 1993, Mancrush delivers with B-Movies of 1991, and Mike Ranger of the Video Rangers completes the competition with B-Movies of 1988! There is a ton of B-Movie madness in this episode, and lots of Rhonda stories to satisfy! In this episode, you might find stories about monsters, bad wigs, creepy ex-boyfriends, Rhonda's first episode on UP All Night, cannibals playing instruments, schlinging schlongs, B-Movie mockery, slithery tentacles, Cannon Films, the man responsible for the death of the B-Movie industry, stars that should never get naked, killer clowns, top-secret projects by the government, Gilbert Gottfried, zombies, lack of sleep, lingerie, foot fetishes, Mel Brooks is a good guy, destroyed master tapes, killer bimbos, entrepreneurship, all of our listener & Facebook questions for Rhonda answered, and what sitcom star got Rhonda fired and is a mega douche?
