FOOTBALL. IS. BACK. | Biggest takeaways from LSU football's first day of fall camp

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2022 30:59

LSU football had its first practice on Thursday which means football is so close we can taste it! Brian Kelly started out fall camp addressing one thing: a starting quarterback will not be named today. But how is the competition heating up? Kelly mentioned all four of the guys in the QB room came ready to compete. Why is the QB competition so valuable for LSU football? Kelly also addressed two other position groups with several players competing for a starting role: the corners and the offensive line. While it's early in camp, who is emerging as an early front-runner in those roles? Which position groups shockingly don't have a preseason battle? Finally, Kelly mentioned running back Tre Bradford is no longer enrolled at LSU and is no longer on the roster. What may have happened and how does that affect LSU's RB room? Who will be the starting QB for LSU football in 2022?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2022 30:48

LSU football reports for fall camp today and the first day of practice starts on Thursday. What position battles will we see play out in the next month? First and foremost, the obvious: the quarterback competition. Will Brian Kelly and Mike Denbrock go with the LSU veteran who looked calm, cool, and collected in the spring game in Myles Brennan? Or the young-gun slinger, Garrett Nussmeier? Or is it the Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels that can make plays with his legs better than just about any other QB in the Pac-12 last year? Second, how will Kelly and Denbrock approach the RB position? LSU veteran John Emery Jr. returns to the field this season after academic ineligibility left him on the sidelines in 2021. But will Penn State transfer Noah Cain give him some competition for the starting job? Or, is it going to be more of a committee approach to the run game, utilizing not just the talent of those two but Armoni Goodwin, Tre Bradford, and Josh Williams as well? Lastly, five-star Baton Rouge WR Shelton Sampson Jr. will announce his commitment on Saturday at Catholic High School. How important is it to this 2023 class to add another hometown guy in addition to his skill and depth at the WR position? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! How does Brian Kelly plan to build a "high performance organization" with LSU football?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2022 31:51

Two of the biggest questions surrounding Brian Kelly and his new role leading the LSU Tigers were: 1. How can he adjust to the culture shock of coaching in Louisiana and the SEC? 2. How is he going to build a championship program after two down years of LSU football? He answered both of those things last week. First, Brian Kelly has almost made a habit of shutting down the "cultural fit" questions in his summer media availabilities. Does it matter where a coach is from if he is winning games? (Hint: of course not). Plus, Brian Kelly shared his three pillars to building a successful and high-performing organization. What is the theme of his cultural beliefs? Finally, LSU baseball gained a guy but lost one too. Caroline Fenton breaks down who Jay Johnson & Co. lost to the MLB Draft but who they're getting in might just be even better. How can LSU football be a top team in the SEC West in 2022?

At SEC Media Days last week, the media voted on the projected order of finish in both the SEC East and SEC West. LSU, per the media, is slated to finish fifth in the West. But why? On today's edition of Locked On LSU, Caroline Fenton breaks down the reasons why the media may not be very high on LSU this season (see: new head coach, 6-7 finish last year), and also the factors that could differentiate LSU football's floor from it's ceiling. How big of a role can Kayshon Boutte make, and how does that depend on the role of the QB? Can BJ Ojulari, Maason Smith, Ali Gaye, and the rest of the defensive line carry the defense? Plus, LSU landed another commitment in the 2024 class: four-star TE Tayvion Galloway, the number one player in that class out of the state of Ohio. With Brian Kelly's history of developing tight ends, can LSU fans get used to the TE position playing a larger role in Kelly and Mike Denbrock's offense the future? Only three Louisiana commits in LSU football's 2023 class – should fans worry about in-state recruiting?

LSU football had an explosive month of July in recruiting, moving from a mid-40s ranking to a top ten recruiting class in the country for 2023. But only three of LSU's current commits are from the state of Louisiana. Should LSU fans be concerned about how Brian Kelly and his staff can recruit in state? Sports Illustrated's Director of Football Recruiting, John Garcia Jr., joins Locked On LSU to break down why Kelly & company haven't landed several in-state Louisiana talent for this upcoming year and why fans shouldn't hit the panic button. What else does this 2023 class need? How can we predict Brian Kelly and Mike Denbrock will want to run this LSU offense based on the offensive talent they are recruiting? Plus, Brian Kelly doesn't have a history of recruiting in Louisiana, or for that matter, the southeast as a whole. Why that isn't necessarily a bad thing and how LSU can use that to its advantage in the recruiting race in the SEC. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why is the game against Florida State so important for LSU football?

The Brian Kelly era officially begins in just 51 days against Florida State in the Dome in New Orleans. While "coach speak" will tell you that every game matters, this game has just a little bit more weight to it. Kelly has plenty of doubters, both LSU fans and non, and starting his first season with the Tigers with a win against the Seminoles would be a huge statement. Plus, LSU's schedule later in the season is murderers row. While this team isn't new to a difficult schedule, starting the season off with a win would give them the necessary momentum to get enough tallies in the win column. Is the SEC trying to undo what it did? College football realignment: what we know and what could come next

Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can't put it back in. But is the SEC trying to? Since UCLA and USC announced their move from the PAC12 to the Big 10, endless scenarios have surfaced about what the future of college football might look like. Will all of the top teams in college football form an alliance and compete for a different championship outside of the NCAA? Will two superconferences form between the Big 10 and SEC? Is the PAC12 dead? Is the Big-12 dead!? All of these scenarios, while far-fetched, seemed feasible. Because the mere thought of USC and UCLA competing against teams in the midwest on a weekly basis seemed far-fetched until it became reality. But as our imaginations ran wild about what the future might hold for college football conferences, there were two very bold statements made by two of the three biggest role players in conference realignment. What can we believe? What makes the most sense? Where does LSU come into play with all of this? Caroline Fenton breaks it all down on today's edition of Locked On LSU. LSU's 2023 recruiting class is heating up - so why are Tigers fans concerned?

LSU added three more commits to their 2023 class over the weekend adding 3-star LB Whit Weeks out of Georgia, 3-star Bishop Gorman CB Jeremiah Hughes, and their highest-ranked recruit so far: 5-star WR Jalen Brown from Miami. In addition to the five commits Brian Kelly & Co. landed over the Fourth of July weekend, the Tigers' 2023 class so far is ranked ninth-best in the country which is a huge improvement over the ranking this time last year. So if LSU is so hot on the recruiting trail, why are there still fans concerned with the team's 2023 class? Keeping Louisiana talent in the state of Louisiana is priority number one for this coaching staff but so far, they haven't met expectations. If LSU doesn't maintain a rivalry with Texas A&M, who would the Aggies play each year? Is Georgia-Auburn the number one rivalry that should be maintained? Is LSU's biggest rival the Florida Gators? Plus, Caroline polled a large group of LSU fans to see which rivals the rest of the fan base prioritize over others. While some of the teams mentioned were shocking (hint: Bulldogs), there are a few teams that feel like non-negotiables for LSU fans. But what exactly will the SEC prioritize if this model is voted into existence? BetOnline Today's Episode is brought to you by BetOnline. The SEC Spring Meetings wrapped up at the end of last week and since there were no finite decisions made the question remains: what will the future of the SEC schedules look like? On today's episode of Locked On LSU, Caroline Fenton breaks down the factors considered when voting on a potential change in schedule. Does a nine-game schedule put SEC teams at a disadvantage when competing with other conferences for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff? How much does conference expansion with Texas and Oklahoma come into play? How much does Playoff expansion matter? How important was the conversation surrounding NIL? Plus, LSU baseball's season ended Monday night after an 8-7 loss to Southern Mississippi and a wild weekend of baseball for the Tigers in the Hattiesburg regional. But the best part of Saban's comments wasn't the comments themselves but rather the response. Jimbo Fisher called a press conference Thursday morning and was less than complimentary of his former co-worker. Through Saban and Jimbo's very public quarrels, where does LSU fit into the mix? SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke about possible changes to the SEC football schedule. The first order of business was adding a potential ninth conference game to each SEC team's schedule. However, what happens once Texas and Alabama are added to the mix? There are several proposed conference realignments – pods, two eight-team divisions in the SEC East and SEC West...according to Greg Sankey, anything and everything is on the table. But if conference divisions are realigned once the Sooners and Longhorns join the Southeastern Conference, LSU could be at risk of losing some of their most historic and heated rivalries. Trey Holly, a four-star RB out of Farmerville, LA committed to play for LSU over the weekend. How could NIL rule changes uniquely affect LSU?

The NCAA has ruled that boosters and collectives can no longer be part of the recruiting process. Since the Supreme Court has ruled that collegiate athletes can profit from their names, images, and likenesses, boosters have played a huge role in enticing recruits and players in the transfer portal to play for their respective schools. But now, the NCAA has come out and said they will not only not allow it in the future, they will retroactively punish schools and athletes who have been involved in recruiting with boosters. But how does that affect LSU? LSU is currently awaiting it's fate by the NCAA after Will Wade's violations for giving players improper benefits, Odell Beckham Jr. giving out cash to players on the field at the national championship, and both the men's basketball and football programs violating NCAA policy. But the question remains – does that make the big, bigger? The strong, stronger? On the other side, does it make the small, smaller? What exactly are the Houston Texans getting in their first pick of the Draft? Derek Stingley Jr. may be coming off of injury but even in 2019 as a true freshman Stingley emerged as one of the best defensive players in college football. He allowed fewer than 40 percent of passes when targeted that year and played an integral role in the national championship season. The Houston Texans are rebuilding and looking to get younger and they look to Stingley Jr. to be a foundation and a building block of Lovie Smith's new and (ideally) improved team. Finally, LSU basketball signs a four-star recruit in Jalen Reed who originally signed with the Florida Gators yet de-committed when head coach Mike White left Gainesville to coach for the Georgia Bulldogs. LSU now sits in fifth place in the SEC West behind the Razorbacks in the top spot and Alabama, Auburn, and Texas A&M all tied for second. Poor defense continues to be a problem for this team, but what has been their biggest strength all season may have been exposed against a really talented defensive team in Fayetteville. Plus, is there one factor that might be working against LSU that is out of their control? And it's not just LSU...Chris Lemonis of Mississippi State fell victim to it in their series against Auburn; Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello did as well in their series against Alabama. At what point are SEC umpires making too many bad calls? Finally, LSU football finds itself scarce of resources in the running back room after sophomore Corey Kiner decided to transfer to his hometown of Cincinnati. Brian Kelly and the rest of the LSU Tigers football coaching staff have emphasized the "process" throughout spring ball. They aren't rushing to name a starter at any position nor label the offensive scheme. They understand the team is experiencing a reset – new players, new coaching staff, and a new approach to practice every day. So what is defensive coordinator Matt House's "process" with the defense? He spoke with the media today to break down where the team is at, and although they aren't at the level they want to be at whenever their season kicks off against Florida State, they are making progress. Plus, what went wrong with LSU baseball against Arkansas in their 5-4 loss on the road? It seems like it is the same stuff, different day. What the Tigers need to improve upon in order to get a series win and potentially catapult themselves to the top spot in the SEC West standings. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
