By the mid-1980s, John Orr is a respected arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department in Los Angeles. He might not be the easiest person to like, but he has a good reputation in Los Angeles County. At the same time, a serial arsonist is setting fires across the metro area. On October 10, 1984, the worst case scenario finally happens: a fire at Ole's Home Center in South Pasadena turns deadly. In today's message, we explore one of the most transformative truths of the spiritual journey: alignment. What does it mean to live a life aligned with God's heart, purpose, and calling? From the intersections of Hollywood and South Pasadena to communities in Calabasas, Mexico City, Ecuador, New York, and London, this conversation is both deeply personal and globally relevant.Pastor Erwin McManus invites us into a raw and honest reflection on the power of intimacy with God, the necessity of radical generosity, and a higher view of humanity. Through stories of Mosaic's improbable impact, vulnerable moments of confession, and practical insight into what alignment really looks like—this message becomes a blueprint for anyone who wants to stop merely believing and start fully living. This isn't a talk about giving. It's a conversation about love. About how we act when we're really in love—with God, with people, with the future He's placed inside of us. If you've ever felt stuck, misaligned, or like your life doesn't yet reflect your deepest convictions, this is for you.
In Rising Voices of El Cerrito's Young Poets, a Message About Resilience As our series about Californians and resilience continues, we hear from El Cerrito's poet laureate, Tess Taylor, and students at Harding Elementary School. They wrote about what resilience means to them for a recently published anthology called “Gardening in the Public Flowerfest.” For One Vietnamese Family in LA, This Broth Is Rich With Memories of Life Before and After War Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Hong Pham was only 6 years old when his family was separated as they fled Vietnam. When they were reunited in a refugee camp in Thailand, they celebrated with a special dish. For our series on resilience, KQED's Daisy Nguyen visited Pham at his home in South Pasadena where he shared memories of his family's journey, and the recipe for the dish that gave them hope. How Poetry Helps Dementia Caregivers Find Shelter from the Storm Frances Kakugawa is a firm believer that the act of caring for another human being can inspire poetry. She knows this from experience, having cared for her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the 1990s. She says poetry was a way to take control of her mom's disease and transform the challenging and sometimes lonely experience of caregiving into something positive. For some 20 years, she's been helping other caregivers in Sacramento to find resilience through poetry. Reporter Holly J. McDede brings us this story. Learn more about your ad choices. It's Friday the 10th as I record write and four major fires are burning across Los Angeles County. My family and I are safe, the closest fire to where we live is the Eaton Fire burning in the hills above Altadena, just north of Pasadena. However, the air is thick with smoke and ash. My office is in South Pasadena and many of my clients and associates live in the Pasadena area. Tragically, I know personally many people that have lost their homes in the fire. Tuesday, January 7, started with news media warnings of a “life threating” windstorm predicted to be the strongest wind event since 2011. The predictions came true with wind gusts reaching 80 to 100 mph in some areas. Those of us who live in Southern California expect wildfires in the winter, when the dry Santa Ana winds blow. However, the severity of this wind event, coupled with the fact that we've have no significant rainfall this winter, created conditions ripe for these devastating wildfires. As the Dodgers get ready to play in the World Series this coming week, we look back at the Series they played in October of 1974 against the Oakland Athletics. It didn't go well for Los Angeles, but that didn't deter a young kid from South Pasadena who fell in love with the Dodgers as a 9-year old and has kept that love affair with the team for half a century. Mark Langill knew from a very young age that he wanted to be around baseball... and the Dodgers in particular. And so he became a sportswriter and covered the team he adored fora few years. But that wasn't enough for Langill. He wanted to be even closer to the team... a part of it if you will. And that's just what happened. The Dodgers hired him to be their team historian. Never has someone been more perfect for a position. Mark's recollection of Dodgers history is unparalleled. He can tell you about every start Don Drysdale had in August of 1968. He can tell you the date Maury Wills was traded away from the Dodgers. He can tell you what Tommy John's record was in 1974 before his season ended with a surgery that would be named after the Dodgers lefty. He can tell you more than you'll ever want to know... and he's the first to admit that he crosses that line enthusiastically. But in this case, he'll tell you about that '74 series when Mike Marshall picked off Herb Washington in Gm 2 to help secure the Dodgers lone win of the series.. He'll tell you about the throw Joe Ferguson made to nail Sal Bando at the plate in Game 1. He'll tell you about Tommy Lasorda wearing two different shoes while coaching third base. And he'll tell you how he told his favorite player, Jimmy Wynn, about a grand slam that Wynn hit that Mark never forgot... but the Toy Cannon sure did. Before there was Wikipedia, there was Mark Langill... and he's way more fun and interesting. It's time for Dodgers Baseball on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices.
