In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about our 2024 winter/spring book signing tour as we finished up in Louisiana and began our one month stay in Galveston, Texas. We had two great book signing events in Lake Charles and Sulphur. We always love getting back to that area because we have some great friends there. It also seems as though every time we come back; we add even more friends to that list. We spent our last night in Louisiana at an animal sanctuary and our first night in Texas just a few hundred yards from the beach. We'll be in Galveston for just over a month, staying at the Galveston Island KOA as well as Galveston Island State Park. During the month, I have a total of nine book signing and speaking events between Kroger and the KOA. Between the activities at the campground and Mardi Gars, Sandy and I have been really active since we have arrived at the KOA. It's a great campground with an amazing staff, and tons of activities for all ages. We love coming to Galveston. It's is such a cool little city. It's an island town with a charming little downtown area. Sandy has even mentioned that this may be the spot that we settle down at after if we decide to trade in the nomad lifestyle for something less mobile. This is the third year in a row that we've stopped here. It's also spot where we love being able to reconnect with our friends, Pat and Dawn Latona.

To kick off 2022, we did a house call to Riley's alma mater, Sam Houston High School in Lake Charles, LA, to chat with his former English teacher and now seasoned Zoom user Amelia Meiburg about teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect on students, parents, and educators alike. Conversation included talk of how Calcasieu Parish (our local “county”) handled the shutdown, what the summer was like, the return to school, Hurricane Laura, Hurricane Delta, the 2021 Winter Storms in Louisiana/Texas, and the major flood that struck our city in May 2021… yeah, I know. We also hit some questions about me as a student and the Lightning Round at the end! Twitters: @IfAnyoneCares_ @RileyJamesIAC Instagram: @RileyJamesIAC

California’s wildfires continue, and as the smoke somewhat clears, the impact of those fires on the state’s agricultural industries is becoming more apparent. We have an update. Hurricane Laura’s impact on the Louisiana-Texas coastline last week decimated some of that areas biggest crops, including one that Sacramento Valley farmers are very familiar with. We have the details. Rural post offices in California are an important lifeline for residents and farmers. We take a look at the funding struggles to keep them operating efficiently in the current political environment. And congratulations to a Yolo county based agricultural non-profit group, the Center for Land Based Learning, who have received federal funds to help infuse West Sacramento with more agricultural opportunities. All that, crop reports, the week ahead in weather, and more…on this week’s KSTE Farm Hour.
Hurricane Laura, a category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph Wednesday night, is approaching landfall along the Louisiana / Texas border. Catastrophic, widespread flash flooding and damaging winds will batter the portions of the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisana. Hurricane-force winds and "unsurvivable storm surge" will push miles inland, the National Hurricane Center warns. The Carolina Weather Group panel held a live broadcast on social media Wednesday night discussing the storm's forecasted impact. We will also talk about how the North Carolina and South Carolina could be impacted by what-is-then-expected-to-be Tropical Depression Laura this weekend. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather/support

Detention PayDetention Pay & 52 Humans in a Trailer. Most truck drivers are told they will get detention pay if they sit more than 2 hours at a shipper or a receiver. This in most cases is a recruiting tool that in most cases never is seen. According to most drivers interviewed, they put in for detention pay and never see it. If they do see it, they have to beg for it and most will tell you that its not worth the argument. Detention as we mentioned starts when a driver has made his appointment time and has sat either unloaded or loaded waiting for the opposite to happen. The one making out like a bandit in this situation in the shipper or receiver. Knowing the trucking company needs their freight often times they don't pay the carrier their detention time and therefore the tuck driver ends up sitting for free unrested while he waits to be unloaded or loaded. FMCSA http://www.regulations.gov/ Follow the link above and log in to go your opinion on detention time and pay in the industry. They need your help and want to hear what is really going on with this issue. Detention pay issues are gaining ground and you can help by voicing your concerns on the link provided above. 18 to 20 year old OTR drivers Should a person under 21 years of age be able to drive over the road? This is another hot topic that is moving forward in trucking. For many years a person could get a CDL if they were at least 18 to 20 years old. But they could not cross they state lines. Does this man sense> Think about this, a driver that is 18 years old could be licensed in the state of Texas. He could pick up a load in El Paso and take it all the way to the Louisiana/Texas state line but could not lawfully take the load to say Shreveport a few miles across the line to deliver it. Thats right he could drive about 900 miles one way but could not drive another 20. Another example to compare is a driver in New Jersey could pick up in Edison and drive 70 miles to the PA State line but can not drive into Easton PA? Think about how crazy that sounds, the Texas driver can drive 900 miles one way but the New Jersey driver is limited to 70 miles one way, thats just plain nuts. This law is in need of an adjustment at the minimum. Tune in and list to the episode called Detention Pay & 52 Humans In A Trailer. TalKCDL is the Number One Trucking Podcast on planet Earth. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #042 Rob Morse I met Rob Morse at the GRPC in Tampa in 2016. I was asked to be on the Polite Society Podcast, where Rob is a co-host. He also does the Self Defense Gun Stories and he writes for Slow Facts as well. His Slow Facts blogs are often posted on other websites like AmmoLand, as well. And he's a reoccurring guest on Bill Frady's Lock N Load Radio. At the GRPC in Chicago this past September, Rob earned the Ray Carter Blogger of the Year award. Besides being a writer and a podcaster, in his 'regular life' he's an design engineer and analyst during the day, and a civil rights activist after hours. He's a very smart man and before he speaks you can see his brain working before the words come out. That keeps him very articulate and on point. I was hoping to get to interview Rob in Chicago, but it worked out in Florida instead. He's one of the great guys that I'm glad to call a friend. He's there with good solid idea, as much as they may be uncomfortable. Rob was coming to the Florida Carry campout from February 15-17. He drove all the way from the Louisiana/Texas border to central Florida. There were a couple of speakers that weren't able to make it, so he stepped right in like a pro and filled the need. It was great to finally have Rob hop in the passenger seat of the (rented) stagecoach! Please check out the episode on YouTube and listen on iTunes.
