It finally happened! After many years of doing this podcast, we both sat down and watched Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre... much to Sam's shock and disgust. And after enduring the scorching Texan Sun and the rank stench of questionable gas station BBQ, we thought we had the stomach to also watch the very divisive 1986 sequel. Let's just say it was a wild ride through the Lone Star State. Prize winning chilli, anyone...?Rate and review us, it's always appreciated. We've all been there—standing on the beach, starving, freezing, and wondering why on earth we can't find a single can of beans. This week on the DayZ Podcast, Andy and Dave take a trip down memory lane to discuss the essential lessons they learned the hard way. We're breaking down the fundamental knowledge that transforms a "freshie" into a survivor, from the tools you can't live without to the mechanics the game never bothers to explain. We dive deep into the absolute necessity of iZurvive and how to use it without ruining the sense of discovery. We discuss the steep learning curve of fighting the Infected, including why you should stop running and start blocking, the power of stealth kills, and how to manage a horde without wasting a single bullet. From finding your first source of clean water to understanding why you should never, ever eat with bloody hands, we cover the "golden rules" of the apocalypse.Whether you're a brand new player who just bought the game in the 1.29 update or a veteran looking to see how your early struggles compare to ours, this episode is packed with practical advice and a healthy dose of "what was I thinking?" nostalgia.Welcome to the essential channel for all things DayZ! Ho Ho Ho, Alex here! (a real human writing these words, this needs to be said in 2025) Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate) and welcome to the very special yearly ThursdAI recap! This was an intense year in the world of AI, and after 51 weekly episodes (this is episode 52!) we have the ultimate record of all the major and most important AI releases of this year! So instead of bringing you a weekly update (it's been a slow week so far, most AI labs are taking a well deserved break, the Cchinese AI labs haven't yet surprised anyone), I'm dropping a comprehensive yearly AI review! Quarter by quarter, month by month, both in written form and as a pod/video! Why do this? Who even needs this? Isn't most of it obsolete? I have asked myself this exact question while prepping for the show (it was quite a lot of prep, even with Opus's help). I eventually landed on, hey, if nothing else, this will serve as a record of the insane week of AI progress we all witnessed. Can you imagine that the term Vibe Coding is less than 1 year old? That Claude Code was released at the start of THIS year? We get hedonicly adapt to new AI goodies so quick, and I figured this will serve as a point in time check, we can get back to and feel the acceleration! With that, let's dive in - P.S. the content below is mostly authored by my co-author for this, Opus 4.5 high, which at the end of 2025 I find the best creative writer with the best long context coherence that can imitate my voice and tone (hey, I'm also on a break!

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
Contrary to what social media would have us believe, not every hobby has to turn into a madly successful side-hustle that takes the world by storm. Margaret talks with Liz Gumbinner, co-host of the podcast "Spawned with Kristen and Liz," about why it's okay to just make really delicious cookies. Liz Gumbinner is a writer, award-winning ad agency creative director, and mom of teens. Online she's better known as the publisher of coolmompicks.com and the author of the OG mom blog Mom-101. Her Substack newsletter, I'm Walking Here, looks at media, politics, and culture through a witty parenting lens. Liz and Margaret discuss why parenting itself has become another thing to "hustle" around, as well as the difference between ambition and "the hustle." It's great to spend a night with your family or friends without taking/posting any pics at all and just being present, says Liz. It gives you perspective on what's important in life and helps you refocus how you want to spend more of your time. John welcomes Jonathan Mahler, New York Times Magazine staff writer and bestselling author of “The Bronx Is Burning,” to discuss his new book, “The Gods of New York: Egotists, Idealists, Opportunists, and the Birth of the Modern City: 1986-1990.” Mahler unpacks the reinvention of the Big Apple in the second half of the Eighties; riffs on the outsized characters (from Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani to Larry Kramer, Al Sharpton, and, of course, Donald Trump) who played key roles in it; and argues that the rise of Zohran Mamdani signals an end to the 40-year era spawned by that transformation. He and Heilemann also reminisce about crossing paths as undergrads in 1987—first as teammates and then as cellmates. Author Rosalie Ham grew up in a country town three blocks long and three blocks wide. She paid close attention to the characters there, like the woman at the shops whose face was frozen into Munch's scream. This eye for detail led to her first novel, which became a hit movie starring Kate Winslet.Author, Rosalie Ham grew up in country NSW, in a town three streets wide and three streets long.During a mouse plague, the rodents were so prolific that their droppings would appear at the bottom of the cereal packet, and the town's children — unsupervised — would chop the mice up with a downpipe in the farmyard shed. When Rosalie was a child, her mum received a devastating diagnosis, and started an affair as a way to find herself before it was too late.Watching her mother's life and extreme changes proved a formative experience, which led Rosalie to write her first novel, The Dressmaker. The book was eventually made into a film starring Kate Winslet.Rosalie's husband Ian had been a staunch support through her writing career, until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and she became his carer. This episode of Conversations covers a life story, family dynamics, mothers, parenting, reflection, loss, origin stories, grief, personal stories, The Dressmaker, Kate Winslet, Australian fiction, Liam Hemsway, carers, infidelity, cheating, divorce, coping strategies and Alzheimer's Disease.

Well, that was a nice little breather from having to come up with witty things to say every morning but while Marris walked more than he has in years and Angi spent two days throwing up from heat stroke, I was drunk and watching the Lollapalooza sets from the comfort of home. With that done for the year and Metallica looming, it only makes sense to look at cool things from childhood as a Daily Discussion Topic. Well actually, that was me trying to make this more appealing because we're really going to explore things the roadies weren't allowed to do as kids that others got to do. Spawned from a point about how the royal bloodline brats are not allowed to do certain things, it's actually kind of crazy how many restrictions are put in place. For example, no shellfish (because they might be poisoned "or something" according to Angi.) No travel together (obviously.) No wearing black during the day. They are not allowed to keep gifts that they are given. They are not allowed to play Monopoly as it tends to result in fist fights (or in this case, like duels to the death.) Even though the royal kids clearly have it bad, that wasn't to say there were things that Angi and Marris weren't allowed to do. For example, Angi was never allowed to have sleepovers because her mothers husband at the time was a drunk (like step father, like daughter.) Luckily, she was allowed to stay at other peoples house which I'm sure always went down like that episode of Roseanne where Becky got a hangover after drinking "tornadoes." As for Marris, he was not allowed to have sugary cereals which meant the Marris household was all Kix and Cheerios. However, when he would go to a friend's house, he was chowing down on Apple Jacks (which if you've tasted lately, are disgusting.) I can't think of things I wasn't allowed to do, my parents allowed us to be a bit out of control and latchkey so let's go to the Request Line and the roadies, shall we. Shane wasn't allowed to watch TV at all even though his parents got to enjoy it in the comfort of their bedrooms. Joanna was not allowed to go to concerts (like Bruce Springsteen) so she just stopped telling her mom where she was going. The assumption was she would go to a concert and get loaded. Tammy was not allowed to go to all night roller rink lock ins even though her brother was. Mike was not allowed to have a TV in his room which isn't as bad as Shane at least. Angi too was not allowed to have a TV in her room and everything she watched was monitored. Roger was not allowed to keep his KIϟϟ collectors cards because they looked like "devils." Sharri was not allowed to do after school activities, go to dances, do sports or cheerleading and she never figured out why her single dad would not allow it. As for Angi, she didn't get to do stuff as well but that's because she was poor. If you are looking for more roadie thoughts or have your own, hit up our Facebook group (Angi Taylor Show) and drop us a comment.

Lemme break this down for you: Daniel Callihan, the suspect in a double murder, allegedly killed Callie Brunett in Loranger, Louisiana, on Thursday morning. He then kidnapped her two daughters, Erin (4 years old) and Jalie (6 years old), and took them to Jackson, Mississippi. Sadly, Erin was later found murdered. Callihan and another suspect, Victoria Cox, have been charged with capital murder, and Callihan faces an additional charge of sexual assault, although the victim hasn't been specified. Callihan's sister has spoken out, describing him as evil and explaining their upbringing by their drug-addicted mother. It turns out that Callihan's father was also a murderer. In 1990, he kidnapped and killed a 20-year-old woman from Denham Springs, Louisiana. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison but later escaped with the help of a woman. He then kidnapped a 17-year-old girl, shot his accomplice in the face, crashed during a police pursuit, and ultimately killed himself before being arrested. What a tragic and disturbing story.

What a treat to have 30 minutes during Pride Month with the one and only Jonathan Van Ness, who's out with a brand new children's book, Gorgeously Me! We're talking about how to create a culture of acceptance for kids who are different, but we touch on so much more. Like the book that traumatized Jonathan as a kid (eek!), their strongest memory of Barney, the importance to them of faith and spiritual connection, unpacking the mantra "I am exactly who I'm meant to be," optimism for the future, and some compelling advice for parents who want to raise our kids to be the best version of themselves. I can't wait for you to listen! Also, I have to humblebrag a little that Jonathan says I "slayed my Cool Pick of the Week" -- but theirs is fantastic too. Joseph Seligman arrived in the United States in 1837, with the equivalent of $100 sewn into the lining of his pants. Then came the Lehman brothers, who would open a general store in Montgomery, Alabama. Not far behind were Solomon Loeb and Marcus Goldman, among the “Forty-Eighters” fleeing a Germany that had relegated Jews to an underclass. These industrious immigrants would soon go from peddling trinkets and buying up shopkeepers' IOUs to forming what would become some of the largest investment banks in the world—Goldman Sachs, Kuhn Loeb, Lehman Brothers, J. & W. Seligman & Co. They would clash and collaborate with J. P. Morgan, E. H. Harriman, Jay Gould, and other famed tycoons of the era. And their firms would help to transform the United States from a debtor nation into a financial superpower, capitalizing American industry and underwriting some of the twentieth century's quintessential companies, like General Motors, Macy's, and Sears. Along the way, they would shape the destiny not just of American finance but of the millions of Eastern European Jews who spilled off steamships in New York Harbor in the early 1900s, including Daniel Schulman's paternal grandparents.Today's guest is Dan Schulman, author of “The Money Kings: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America.” We trace the interconnected origin stories of these financial dynasties from the Gilded Age to the Civil War, World War I, and the Zionist movement that tested both their burgeoning empires and their identities as Americans, Germans, and Jews.
“Not ‘Lebanese,' Blanche. Lesbian!” The line originated on The Golden Girls in 1986, after a lesbian friend of Dorothy's came to visit and Blanche mistook her for “Lebanese.” A decade later, Ellen DeGeneres riffed on that same play on words, coming out as “Lebanese” on the Rosie O'Donnell Show shortly before publicly coming out. “Lebanese” lesbians would go on to appear in Mean Girls, on Glee, and even RuPaul's Drag Race. In this episode, Jess and Susie get to the bottom of what made that joke so enduring… and talk to an actual Lebanese lesbian about what it meant to her.
