Queensland's bracing for Cyclone Alfred to hit later this week. It's been upgraded to category two overnight, and is brewing off the Australian coast, where it's already causing heavy surf and high tides. Correspondent Donna Demaio told Andrew Dickens it's expected to hit on Thursday or Friday. She says there's a possibility of destructive winds and life-threatening flash flooding. Australia's next tropical cyclone is getting a name change. Cyclone Zeila's dissipation has brought the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to the end of an alphabetical list, alternating by gender. The next cyclone was due to be named Anthony, but since Anthony Albanese is the current Prime Minister, the decision was made to jump to the next a-initial on the list. Australian Correspondent Donna Demaio told Andrew Dickens that when the name matches that of a prominent person, they reorder the name to avoid confusion. She says the next name will be Alfred. fWotD Episode 2844: Tropical Storm Gabrielle (2007) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 16 February 2025 is Tropical Storm Gabrielle (2007).Tropical Storm Gabrielle was a short-lived tropical cyclone that passed over North Carolina before tracking out to sea. The seventh named storm of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, Gabrielle developed as a subtropical cyclone on September 8 about 385 miles (620 km) southeast of Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Unfavorable wind shear impacted the storm for much of its duration, although a temporary decrease in the shear allowed the cyclone to become a tropical storm. On September 9, Gabrielle made landfall at Cape Lookout National Seashore in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with winds of 60 mph (97 km/h). Turning to the northeast, the storm quickly weakened and dissipated on September 11.In advance of the storm, tropical cyclone watches and warnings were issued for coastal areas, while rescue teams and the U. S. Coast Guard were put on standby. The storm dropped heavy rainfall near its immediate landfall location but little precipitation elsewhere. Along the coast of North Carolina, high waves, rip currents, and storm surge were reported. Slight localized flooding was reported. Gusty winds also occurred, though no wind damage was reported. One person drowned in rough surf caused by the storm in Florida. Overall damage was minor. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:05 UTC on Sunday, 16 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Tropical Storm Gabrielle (2007) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.
Dr. Marshall Shepherd, Director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program at the University of Georgia, joins John to discuss the fourth transformation: how tropical storms and extreme weather are intensifying in frequency and power. From hurricanes moving further inland to the compounding effects of heatwaves and heavy rainfall, Marshall explains the science behind these shifts and the growing challenges they pose for communities across the U.S. Together, they explore the critical steps needed to adapt, rethink infrastructure, and address inequities in how extreme weather impacts vulnerable populations.

It is hard not to have noticed the intensity of storms around the world this year, not least the Atlantic storms that battered the eastern US. A new study, using a new technique, confirms their attribution to climate change, and goes further, finding that many of them were actually raised in intensity category compared to how strong they might have been in a world without anthropogenic climate change. The costs are already extraordinary, according to Daniel Gilford of Climate Central in Princeton. When it comes to wildlife conservation, one of the underestimated parameters is the “old and wise” individuals in a population. According to a review paper in the journal Science, not only are earth's old animals in decline, in many species they are vital to recovery and resilience when outside factors endanger numbers. As co-author Lauren Brent of Exeter University points out, these sorts of nuance are not always looked out for in conservation estimates.Chimps have culture, but is their culture cumulative and transmissible or innate and intuitive? Comparing a large database of observed chimpanzee behaviours, together with genetic lineages, Cassandra Gunasekaram and Andrea Migliano, of the University of Zurich, found that types of more complex tool usage can be correlated with reproductive overlaps between different chimp communities. The wandering females maybe carry tech knowledge with them when they travel to find new mates. Is this something both chimps and humans inherited from a common ancestor? And finally, as the harvesting of deep ocean polymetallic nodules gets nearer to commercial reality, the French research ship L'Atalante sets sail this week to study the animals that live on and around these strange chemical balls scattered across the abyssal plains of the mid pacific ocean. As lead scientist aboard, Pierre-Antoine Dessandier tells us, it is essential to understand how these animals live in the dark, 5km down, before the habitats are disturbed. //The Wire//2300Z November 4, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: FBI ARRESTS POTENTIAL TERRORIST PLOTTING ATTACK ON POWER GRID. MEDIA SPECULATES IRANIAN COUNTERATTACK TO BEGIN TONIGHT. ELECTION FORTIFICATIONS CONTINUE IN USA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Switzerland – Over the weekend additional details have come to light pertaining to the September arrests of the inventor of the Sarco death pods serviced by the assisted-death group Last Resort. The inventor and several others were arrested in September following a malfunction during the first operational use of their death pod. New details indicate that foul play is assessed to be a factor at this time, as a forensic medical examiner noted strangulation marks on the victim's neck. AC: As this exceptionally morbid and dystopian topic has received much attention over the past few years, the situation has not been made much better following the first victim of one of the death pods being found strangled to death. Initial information is sketchy at best, but most theories pertain to the idea that the death pod probably didn't actually kill the person inside it, and the developers probably had to murder their first customer instead.Middle East: Many mainstream media sources throughout the region are theorizing that an Iranian counterattack on Israel may take place tonight or tomorrow, so as to take advantage of the timing of the American Presidential election. AC: As always, nothing is confirmable via open sources. However, even though all mainstream media sources are largely propaganda outlets, it's possible that mainstream media groups run/influenced by intelligence agencies could indeed have inside information pertaining to Iranian attack plans.-HomeFront-United States: Election day fortifications and anti-personnel obstacles continue to be emplaced throughout most major US cities by government agencies and private businesses alike. Plywood barricades have been emplaced by most businesses and storefronts around the National Mall as has become standard during times of heightened potential for civil unrest.Tennessee: This afternoon a man was arrested for allegedly planning to conduct an attack on a power station near Nashville. The FBI identified the assailant as Skyler Philippi, who was arrested after attempting to use an explosive-laden drone to attack a power station.Gulf Coast: Tropical Depression 18L continues to develop strength, as most forecast models predict the storm strengthening into a Tropical Storm this evening. Initial forecast modeling indicates a general track toward Louisiana.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Not much is known regarding the incident in Nashville, however a cursory search of the alleged assailant's name returns substantial open-source investigation reports conducted by far-left groups hunting down alleged White Supremacist groups and/or people. This individual left a paper trail so far and wide as to be exceptionally suspicious, and probably attracted the attention of every federal agency that exists by his rather active online presence. In a continuation of previous DoJ takedowns of potential terrorists, the details surrounding this case raise questions as to how long the FBI was going to wait before stopping this assailant. Per the FBI's own press release, the individual had confessed to planning a mass shooting at a YMCA facility in June of this year. He had also scouted out the electrical facility multiple times, and openly conveyed all of his attack plans to undercover FBI agents in excruciating detail. Additionally, the assailant purchased C4 plastic explosives from an undercover agent, and later purchased black power to be used in the manufacture of IEDs as well. As if this was not enough to arrest the individual, he was able to assemble the explosive devices, attach at least one to a drone, travel to the facility, arm the explosives a

Who could have predicted that Hurricane Helene would carry her fury from the Gulf of Mexico and the coast of Florida hundreds of miles north into Appalachia? While there were forecasts calling for the hurricane to be downgraded to a tropical storm and drop quite a bit of rain in the region, the extent of damage in western North Carolina has been breathtaking. Jacqueline Harp had her hands full when she took over as CEO of Smokies Life, a nonprofit organization that works with the National Park Service to develop educational and interpretive materials for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She had barely settled into that job when Helene reached North Carolina. We've invited Jacki to join us today both to learn how recovery efforts are going in the national park, and to discuss her new role and ambitions with Smokies Life.

//The Wire//1630Z October 1, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: ISRAEL BEGINS GROUND INVASION OF LEBANON. RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE IN AMERICAN SOUTHEAST. ILA LABOR STRIKE BEGINS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Overnight Israeli forces began their ground invasion of Lebanon. So far, it is unclear as to if this is a limited border incursion or the prelude to a much larger invasion. AC: Sources on either side have not entirely been reliable, and due to the remote terrain in southern Lebanon, it may be some time before an accurate picture of the advance is obtained. Western media sources have claimed that an Iranian ballistic missile strike is imminent, however it's not clear as to how any media source could possibly know this information with any certainty. Similar rumors persist regarding the potential for Iran to send troops to Lebanon to assist in their defense against the Israeli invasion.-HomeFront-USA: The Longshoremen labor strike officially began at midnight, with roughly 45,000 dockworkers and other personnel shutting down logistics operations along the Eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast. As of right now, the following port facilities are most affected by the labor strike: Boston, Delaware River, New York, Baltimore, Hampton Roads, Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, Port Everglades, Tampa, Mobile, New Orleans, and Houston.Southeast: Logistical networks have begun to organize more deliberately and aid is beginning to flow into the region as best it can. Roads being impacted or simply no longer existing presents the biggest challenges for rescue and recovery. Price gouging has been reported in many sectors, from fuel to food. Though unconfirmed at this time, truckers are reporting acts of sabotage to their vehicles while parked at truck stops throughout the region. This has allegedly taken the form of slashed tires and tampering with fuel tanks, however it's not clear as to if these incidents are more representative of routine crime or more deliberate targeting of aid shipments.Atlantic Ocean: Tropical Depression Kirk increased to a Tropical Storm overnight, and is expected to become a major hurricane over the next few days. AC: It's too soon to tell if this system is intended for the east coast, however if so this could be a potentially serious complication for the already compromised region.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though substantial aid shipments and infrastructure are allegedly on the way, most locals still have not seen many aid efforts from higher than the local level. There are also mounting allegations that higher-level government aid agencies are discouraging the work of Good Samaritans. On the ground, feelings are mixed; higher level aid is desperately called for, but most people know that federal assets will probably just mess up what's already being worked at lower levels. As such, there's a delicate balance at hand which is resulting in conflict: Local volunteers have stepped up where the government has not. However, much more substantial efforts are needed than can be provided by single privately owned helicopters or random citizens carrying one truckload of supplies. However, when state/federal agencies takeover operations and shut out volunteers, they often prove that they can't do much better of a job than the volunteers paying out of pocket for recovery efforts. In short, if formal agencies could take over rescue/recovery efforts and do the job effectively, most volunteers would probably be happy to hand the reigns over to more qualified professionals. However, in most cases the professionals are either not capable of the magnitude of support needed, or are bound up in red tape that is costing lives every single day, thus the emerging conflict. This is resulting in a unique parallel society whereby locals are working independently of formal aid agencies to
