Video games have been a growing influence our culture for a while now. Ever since the 1970s, kids have been jumping into virtual worlds to compete with others, go on adventures, solve puzzles, and more. And while there are many positives about games, there are also many negatives. So how do we navigate that with the students in our youth group and how to we help parents navigate it with their kids? Our guest on this episode is Drew Dixon, author of the book, Know Thy Gamer: A Parent's Guide to Video Games. Drew is an avid gamer himself, is a father of gamers, co-founder of Love Thy Nerd, and has a history of serving in student ministry. In addition to sharing about his book, he provides some valuable tips for helping you and the parents in your ministry. Let's Parent on Purpose: Christian Parenting, Marriage, and Family Talk
Whether you like it or not, your child probably loves video games. When we as parents act like video games are a curse, we often miss a key opportunity with our children. My guest Drew Dixon shares the wonder of video games including creativity, connection, and play. We talk about the gospel opportunities to discuss worldview with your children as they play video games, as well as equipping them to be on mission with their friends and contacts through social gaming. Finally, Drew and I discuss our responsibility to set safeguards and parameters with our children as they engage in gaming. Drew helps us see how important it is for our rules to be clear, collaborative, and written down. Drew Dixon is a team leader at Lifeway Christian resources, co-founder and Chief Content Nerd of Love Thy Nerd, public speaker, co-host of Humans of Gaming, editor, author, and has traveled all over the world to spread the Gospel at nerd conventions. Bubba and Kate were there, had an absolute blast, and wanted to recap the weekend with all of you. That's what they want to talk about this week on the Free Play Podcast.

Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! In today's episode I am joined with Drew Dixon. Drew is the co-founder of Love Thy Nerd, a ministry that offers a better way to share the love of Jesus to nerds and nerd culture. Let's face it: the digital age has changed the way we parent. So, instead of ignoring what your children are playing or removing the videogames altogether, Love Thy Nerd offers an opportunity for parents to understand their children and the kinds of games they are playing. Drew wrote a book titled "Know Thy Gamer" to discuss important movements in the gaming world. He guides parents to a better understanding on the topic through a Christian lens. In this episode, Somer and Drew Dixon discuss: common myths related to video games benefits of gaming and the often missed opportunity for parents and churches to engage and share the love of Jesus with gamer culture Let's equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to face this digital age of parenting. Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation! Connect with Drew at lovethynerd.com and grab a copy of his new release HERE! The church has an opportunity for mission and connection with nerd culture. -If your child is identifying themself as a “nerd” or a “gamer”, the best thing you can do as a parent is be curious about that - and genuinely so. -If we keep love at the center, that guides everything else that we do -Everything in our culture is designed to ‘get its hooks into us'. -Video game addiction is a very small subset of the gaming population, less than 1% -Video games engage our brain in a way that's deeper than a book or movie because the player gets to have input. -Our kids experience a sense of accomplishment in gaming. We do not want to diminish their accomplishments even if it doesn't seem special to us. REMEMBER: God is the author or play and fun. These days games do bring people together. Boredom is your friend as a parent - we need to let go of this idea that our kids constantly need something to do. Is your husband child a gamer? (Just kidding.) Is it hard for you to relate? Do you wonder if there's any redeeming value in it? Have you wondered what the Bible would say about gaming? Are you lacking a framework for determining what's appropriate and what's not? If you responded “yes” to any of the above, today's your lucky day! Drew Dixon is the cofounder of Love Thy Nerd, and has been speaking + writing about video games for over a decade. Today he's answering the questions we're all asking on behalf of our kids that love video games… perhaps a little bit too much. His new book Know Thy Gamer: A Parent's Guide to Video Games is a great resource on gaming, and I so appreciate him bringing practical advice today on parental controls, free to play games, and loot boxes (I didn't know either). If you live with a gamer or know someone who does, this is a great way to expand your knowledge base on the real truth about gaming.
