Jennifer Check and Anita “Needy” Lesnicky are best friends living in the town of Devil's Kettle, best known for its waterfall and high school football team.  When Jennifer suggests she and Needy step out to see a band, Low Shoulder, at the local roadhouse, Melody Lane, Needy's reluctant.  She's rather spend the night with Chip, her boyfriend.  But Jennifer's nothing if not persuasive. Upon arriving at Melody Lane, it's clear the band is a bunch of locals posing as hipsters from the city.  But Jennifer's entranced by the lead singer, Nikolai, who she finds “salty,” and as the set heats up, so does Melody Lane.  A fire soon engulfs the bar, and after escaping, Jennifer and Needy are beckoned to the band's van.  Jennifer succumbs, but Needy runs home, only to find Jennifer in her kitchen, beaten, bloody, and gorging herself on Boston Market chicken.  What's happened?  And what does it mean when certain members of their high school class end up dead, mangled, drained of their blood?  Needy suspects something bigger than a few random murders at play, and wonders if maybe, just maybe, her bestie's at the center of it all. On today's episode, we're heading to a Low Shoulder show, trying to find a "cute" outfit to wear, and also trying to figure out why our best friend is puking black sludge onto our floor, while revisit the absolute horror cult classic, Jennifer's Body (2009). This movie was written by Diablo Cody, and directed by Karyn Kusama. This movie stars Megan Fox (Transformers, Hope & Faith), Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, The Dropout), Johnny Simmons (Evan Almighty, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and JK Simmons (Whiplash, Juno)This movie is a great example of a cult classic, because it was wholly misunderstood when it first came out, and has enjoyed a reappraisal in recent years regarding the feminist themes in the film, and I completely love that for this film. This is a great example of a female-led movie, and this movie has such an unique story and voice to it, that it's completely worth a watch for any horror fan!!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. "Hell is a teenage girl." We talk about the Karyn Kusama cult horror comedy Jennifer's Body this week with our bestie Lauren Ogle from Keep it Weird, and we can't help but be lesbigay for Megan Fox. As Jennifer Check, the demon possesed boy killer who chows down on the patriarchy, Fox has never been more in her element. The Diablo Cody penned script was sorely overlooked when it came out in 2009, but has since been reassesed as a feminst classic. We love its lead heroine Anita "Needy" Lesnicki played by Amanda Seyfried, and are secret Low Shoulder stans of Adam Brody's Nikolai, the true villian of the movie. We always knew what Kusama, and Cody had with this wonderful movie, and am glad everyone else has finally come around. The Classic Film: The Hunger (1983) "A love triangle develops between a beautiful yet dangerous vampire, her cellist companion, and a gerontologist” (IMDb.com). We know that description sounds odd, but it’s a strangely accurate description of what amounts to one big montage of a film. The twist on the vampire trope is fascinating, but is it more style than substance? The Modern Film: Jennifer’s Body (2009) "A newly possessed high school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?” (IMDb.com).
