Musician and artist Goya Gumbani joins Chrystal Genesis in New York's East Village ahead of his live show to talk sound, style, Miles Davis, and his new album, Warlord of the Weejuns. In this episode, the Brooklyn-born, South London-based artist reflects on the cultural influences behind his dreamy, laid-back record, where the storytelling of New York hip-hop meets London's jazz edge. Recorded just after soundcheck, their conversation glides through fashion, food trucks, friendship, and family, with Warlord of the Weejuns, out via Ghostly International, threaded throughout. The album features contributions from Fatima, Yaya Bey, Joe Armon-Jones, and more, and is a meditation on self-expression, Black cultural lineage, and the quiet power of doing things your way. This month we're back on the time travel malarkey and we're space oddyseying along to 2001 where we've been laughing at talking Velociraptors in Jurassic Park 3, Installing WIndows XP and wearing massive baggy shorts with wallet chains. We've also been talking about Tracey's over familiarity with Polly Jean Harvey, Unexpected Fall influencers & highly inappropriate reasons for cheering at festivals. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alkaline Trio, Aphex Twin, The Beta Band, Bjork, Camera Obscura, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Converge, Dntel, Mark Eitzel, Explosions In The Sky, The Faint, The Frames, Life Without Buildings, Lift To Experience, Low, Mercury Rev, Ministry, Mogwai, Opeth, Roots Manuva, Shaggy, A Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band, Sparklehorse ft PJ Harvey, Spiritualized, Stars Of The Lid, System Of A Down, Thursday, Tool, Tweaker Ft Craig Wedren & The White Stripes. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk) This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed. To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series. Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you? Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowski, DJ Spinna, Rae & Christian, Esthero, Groove Armada (remix of A Tribe Called Quest's Description of A Fool), Roots Manuva, Ty, Jurassic 5, Bjork, Niko, RJD2, The Nextmen and more. http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?51655
Roots Manuva vs Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem For A Witness (Paris DJs Soundsystem Remix) (Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-04-10 We played this bootleg so many times at parties (to the dancers' delight), that we decided to fully remaster the thing and share it with everyone. We took the instrumental version of 'Requiem Pour Un Con' from Serge Gainsbourg, and tweaked it with the a capella from Roots Manuva's 'Witness'. The resulting track is driven by its fat and funky groove, erupting with a peculiar, sophisticated sense of rythm and harmonics. For those who haven't heard this bootleg yet, just expect the unexpected! Tracklisting : 01. This was a seriously bizarre night... after watching the RZA MC with his DJ Kevvy Kev to launch Futuresonic, with around 25 people present, Rich Reason and Jonny Dub led the way for us all to catch the one and only Roots Manuva at the Mint Lounge. RZA and crew enjoyed the Mint Lounge veggie patties while the New Bohemia boys, who presented the night, sorted Groovement an interview with the man Rodney. Short but sweet, here'yare... Thanks to New Bohemia for sorting the interview, and having the passion to put on events in the first place - www.myspace.com/newbohemia Originally broadcast 4th May 2008. Runnning time: 18:59 Unity Radio supported Futuresonic 2008.
