EeroQ is unusual in two ways. It's the only company in the world commercializing electrons-on-helium qubits, a modality first proposed by Platzman and Dykman in Science in 1999. He estimates we are “many orders of magnitude away” from the physical limits of both speed and energy efficiency in our electronics. Where is Climate Tech heading? Certainly not dead — but constantly reinventing itself. So much so that you begin to wonder whether the label itself has outlived its original meaning.  Laurent and Gerard welcome Kim Zou, co-founder and CEO of Sightline Climate, the data and research platform mapping the climate-tech economy, and author of some of the sector's most influential newsletters, including CTVC and the newer Powerstack. Sightline has become essential reading for investors, utilities, corporates, and policymakers trying to understand where capital is flowing and how the energy system is evolving.  Together, they explore how Climate Tech has transformed over the past decade. Decarbonisation alone is no longer the central narrative. Today, AI, energy security, and industrial resilience dominate the conversation — often pushing sustainability itself into the background.  The discussion traces how funding has shifted from venture capital toward infrastructure and large-scale project finance. The spotlight has also moved away from “green molecules” — hydrogen, SAF, and carbon management — toward “green electrons”: virtual power plants, grid-enhancing technologies, and the race to accelerate datacentre construction.  They also examine the contrasting innovation models shaping global competition. In China, much of the breakthrough innovation happens inside corporations themselves, with companies like BYD employing more than 110,000 R&D staff, and CATL relying on a 20,000-engineer workforce. The United States, meanwhile, benefits from unparalleled access to capital and world-class universities and research centres. Europe sits somewhere in between, attempting to combine industrial policy with scientific excellence.  Finally, the conversation turns to one of Sightline's newest areas of focus: tracking data-center construction. The company currently follows 140 sites representing roughly 16 GW of announced capacity. Deneb, the brightest star of Cygnus, stands high overhead as night falls at this time of year. And it really is a brilliant star – tens of thousands of times brighter than the Sun. But if we could tune our eyes to see radio waves, Deneb wouldn’t even register. Instead, the swan’s leading light would be Cygnus A – one of the brightest radio galaxies in the universe. A radio galaxy produces huge amounts of radio waves. It’s usually a large elliptical galaxy, which looks like a fat, fuzzy football. It has a supermassive black hole at its center. Gas, dust, and stars spiral into the black hole. But powerful magnetic fields eject some of that material back into space. It forms “jets” that fire out at almost the speed of light. The jets can span hundreds of thousands of light-years. Electrons spiral through a jet’s magnetic field, producing radio waves. Eventually, the jets plow into gas and dust between galaxies, forming wide bubbles that emit even more radio waves. Cygnus A was the first radio galaxy ever discovered, in 1939. It’s about 760 million light-years away. Its black hole is two and a half billion times the mass of the Sun. The entire complex – galaxy, jets, and bubbles – spans more than 600,000 light-years. That’s six times the diameter of our home galaxy, the Milky Way – one of the biggest, brightest radio galaxies in our part of the universe. More about radio galaxies tomorrow. On this week's Keepin It Real, Cam discusses his largely sedentary life and the fulfillment he gets on the rare occasions he can see the results of his work.  ----- Most weeks, my work mainly involves pushing electrons around. I sit at a computer and do stuff. Recently it's been requests for short training videos for clients to use with their teams. I write scripts, edit scripts and record videos. Other weeks I prepare presentations. Lots of PowerPoint editing, lots of rehearsing content. Lots of time online. Lots of buying tickets. It's all sedentary stuff. Me plus a keyboard plus a computer plus a screen, pushing electrons. Last Saturday, though, was different. I was in Clark County at my father's property near Grove Hill. I climbed on a tractor shortly after 7:30am. It's a small John Deere with a scoop on the front and a mower on the back. I didn't climb off until well after 2pm. For about seven hours I mowed and pushed downed trees out of roads and fields. I was bitten by every biting insect in North America. My arms and neck got burned. My work pants smelled of diesel fuel. I added a couple more tears to my already torn work TShirt. My socks balled up inside my boots, sweaty, and my back hurt from lifting 50 lb bags of wheat. When I washed my hands, the white sink turned brown with dirt and dust that had stuck to my sweaty arms. A mystery bruise was beginning to ache and turn purple on my shoulder. I sat down in my father's small camp, told him I'm just going to close my eyes for a second, and fell solidly asleep. And I was deeply deeply happy. Pushing electrons is what I've chosen to do for a living. At the end of every day, I typically leave my office with my checklist complete. I make a large one on Monday, add a little bit to it each day, cross some stuff off, and by Friday have largely worked through it. But I do not get the satisfaction of seeing the fruits of my work. At the end of the bricklayer's workday, he can step back and see the progress he's made. He started there in the morning and is now finishing here. His progress is easy to see. Pushing electrons doesn't offer the same satisfaction. But that was not the case last Saturday. Fields and roads were mown. Trees were pushed away. Progress was obvious. And it felt good. And tiring. The soreness was welcome. And the nap on the couch was earned. Fall means it's time to cut firewood. It's the wood we'll use next fall, giving it a year to season and dry on the rack. I love cutting firewood. The feel of the chainsaw, going from tree to log to cut wood pieces to split pieces and the stack slowly growing in front of me. My hands rough and my back aching. Later, a cold beer and college football. And the sleep that night is an earned slumber. I live a largely sedentary life. I go to work and sit. Then on to a meeting and sit. Then on to the next place and sit. A day seeing the progress of my work is needed every now and then. Strangely, the bruises and the soreness and the exhaustion make me feel alive. The Columbia is the fourth-largest river in the United States by flow, and the largest river emptying into the eastern Pacific Ocean. In the last 90 years, this mighty river has been mightily renovated. The multitude of dams (around 150) in the basin now represent 44% of all US hydro-electric power generation. It all started in the 1930's with the Bonneville Dam, a signature project of The New Deal. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) was created by Congress to market the power generated by the dam. The agency would grow over the years as more and more dams were built in the basin. My father was hired by BPA around 1970 as an electrical engineer. Within a few short years his salary enabled him to purchase a new home for his young family of four, and a new Ford Mustang for his commute to work from the Portland suburbs. As the 70's drew to a close, my father began climbing a managerial ladder at BPA. Visiting his office was exciting for a kid. At one point it was located on the upper floors of the tallest building on Portland's east side. The cars on the street looked like toys from up there. Elevator rides were a thrill. My sister and I would jump at the first sign its rapid ascent was slowing, elated by the hang time we felt.In 1984 dad moved to a new office, in an even fancier building with a curved facade overlooking the freeway. I distinctly remember him telling me about a modern white noise system that was built in. It made the office seem quieter, he said, by adding sound; a special sound that made background noise less noticeable. Conversations in far-off cubicles couldn't be heard. This puzzled me. It sounded like white noise was black magic. Adding sound, in my experience, was a surefire way to make something— someplace—louder. What exactly he did at work in those years wasn't obvious to me. His white collar job, in his white noise office wasn't tangibly connected to the mechanics of hydro-power or the delivery of electricity into our homes in the Pacific Northwest. Similarly, now a generation removed, my son is both uninterested and unimpressed by my vocation, which amounts to me spending a lot of time in my home office/studio with headphones on, plunking away on a midi keyboard, scrutinizing bands of orange-hued spectrogram stereo files, poking and prodding at them with a mouse in hand.In the words of Woody Guthrie—who was hired by BPA in 1941 to ennoble the burgeoning hydro-electric empire in song—the Columbia rolls on. It rolls on four miles north of our home. Electrons arriving in wires from turbines at Bonneville Dam are converted to LCD light and computational power right here in front of me, enabling, in part, the wonderfully complicated but seemingly straightforward task of drafting this post. It rolls on and I take it for granted. Air conditioning requires a great deal many more electrons, which I'm also currently enjoying, with little thought given to it. While the hydroelectric empire of the Columbia has given the region abundant renewable electricity and supplied it with water to irrigate arid landscapes, it has done so at the cost a once great salmon fishery.Here BPA would say, no it wasn't us. We've helped Salmon. We've spent billions. Look at all our hatcheries and fish ladders. We even transport fish in trucks around our dams. It was the fishermen and canneries who depleted the fishery before the dams were built. On that score, they wouldn't be entirely mistaken. The early 1900's Columbia commercial fishery knew no bounds, and within half a century it brought about its own demise. But to say that salmon and dams can get along hunky-dory, well, that's increasingly hard to fathom.Less than a year ago, three hundred miles to the south, a campaign of dam removals was concluded on the Klamath River. The basin is still far from its pre-Euro-American state, but it was is a big move for restoration of salmon spawning habitat in the upper Klamath. Within days of the last dam removal, fall run Chinook were observed upriver for the first time in a century. Years from now perhaps stakeholders will look to the Klamath for answers about what to do about the aging infrastructure on the Columbia.Celilo Falls and the Cascades of the Columbia, once roaring, are but memories of a mighty river that ran wild nearly a century ago. Submerged by slackwater pools, today's river soundscape is now formed by the wakes created by cargo ships and barges that ply its lower reaches. This recording is essentially a slice of time on a mild December day in 2024 between two such vessels. Centered on a reach of river absent of shoreline highways, it harkens back to a quieter time. It captures the sound of a great expanse; miles in all directions.Accordingly, the musical composition and arrangement are imbued with harmonic complexity that I don't usually reach for: 7th suspended 4th chords, add-9th chords. Delivered in slow, overlapping succession, these unsettled voicings follow each other rhythmically, like waves tumbling ashore. Small animals scuttle through the brush on the shore while gulls and Bald Eagles cry in the middle distance. Common Mergansers call to each other upriver. Whorls of water formed by the current hint at the great power that lies beneath the placid surface. Roll on Columbia, roll on… Thanks for reading and listening, friend. Last month I was invited to speak at a functional medicine symposium in Rome, Italy. This is the same conference where I gave an in-depth presentation explicitly on photobiomodulation two years prior. This time around, I spoke on the term/theory I have coined: The Mitochondrial Triad.​​As many of you know by this point, this Triad is, what I believe to be at this point in time based on the information I have gathered, the three most efficient and efficacious ways to boost your mitochondrial function: red light therapy, methylene blue and carbon 60. Our universe has a long and complicated history. And scientists are still trying to understand it all. The general picture says the universe was born 13.8 billion years ago, in the Big Bang. For the first tiny fraction of a second, the universe expanded at many times the speed of light – an epoch known as cosmic inflation. When inflation ended, the expansion slowed dramatically. But a lot happened over the following few minutes. During the first second, the basic forces of nature took shape: gravity, electromagnetism, and the forces that bind matter together. These forces made it possible to forge protons and neutrons. By about three minutes, the universe had expanded and cooled enough for these particles to stick together. They formed the nuclei of the first elements – mainly hydrogen and helium. The universe was still extremely hot and dense. And it was “foggy,” so we can’t see anything from that era. By about 380,000 years, though, the fog began to clear. Electrons latched on to the nuclei to form complete atoms. That process left a faint “afterglow” that we see across the entire universe. There are lots of questions about the details of this picture. And some scientists aren’t convinced about the overall outline – they have different views about the age of the universe, whether inflation ever happened, and more. There’s a little more agreement about what came next, and we’ll talk about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
