"House Of Steam" Putting it simply the L.A.-born Nels Cline's resume' is so deep, to quote Mark Eitzel, it "would make the ocean proud." The guitarist and composer is one of the most respected names in the business and though he's perhaps best known these days for being the guitarist of Wilco, let's not single story Mr. Cline, because his body of work is varied and extensive. Aside from his early jazz work with his twin brother Alex, he's played with everyone from the Geraldine Fibbers to Mike Watt to Thurston Moore. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cline has played on close to 200 albums in jazz, pop, rock, country, and experimental music. Let me give you a few of those 200 to play with: Yoko Ono, Henry Kaiser, Firehose, Wayne Kramer, Rickie Lee Jones, John Zorn, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Neil Finn, Lee Ranaldo and Chris Stamey. And belive me when I tell you that's a heavily expurgated list. Over the years Cline has been in bands with his pal Mike Watt Floored By Four, band with his wife Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto and he's had the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4. Now comes The Consentrik Quartet, which is Cline along with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chirs Lightcap and drummer Tom Rainey. Improvisational, experimental and downright wonderful, the band's debut album is a profound blend of rich cycle grooves, unexpected rhythmic excursions, and subtle meter innovations. It's marvelous work. Filled with delicate percussive brushes, virtuoso sax fills, prowling bass lines idiosyncratic sax melodies and Cline's nimble guitar lines moving through each composition with dextrous finesse, it's hard to think of a richer listening experience in recent memory. It's hard to think of a nicer guy as well--Nels is a lovely fellow and now you get to meet him. www.nelscline.com (http://www.nelscline.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG & Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The slowcore sound can be simplified down to tempo and a minimalist approach, but like every genre or subgenre of rock music, there are always those pushing the boundaries and reinventing. On the 1996 album Three Sheets To The Wind by Idaho, the boundary pushing comes as a pair of straight-up rock songs that wouldn't sound out place on a Dinosaur Jr. or Heatmiser album. From there, the band adds jazzy and soulful elements - brushed drums here, an electric piano there - paired with Jeff Martin's evocative vocal that falls somewhere between the folky sadcore of American Music Club's Mark Eitzel and the more experimental post-rock of Low's Alan Sparhawk. We hate to throw around the phrase 'criminally unheralded', but it sure does seem to fit San Francisco slowcore pioneers American Music Club and lead singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel. This week's guest, DAGGERzine creator Tim Hinely, brings us their 2nd album, 'Engine'. Warning: Eitzel's poignant, devastatingly raw songs will get under your skin and fester. Beautifully. “Going Places” Over the course of his brilliant career, which has spanned roughly 15 albums or so, the Nebraska-born Josh Rouse has established himself as one of the finest singer-songwriters on the planet. Armed with the poetic flourishes of everyone from Paul Simon and John Prine, Rouse's work is many things at once: subtle but catchy, elegant, graceful and undeniably infectious. Work your way through his discography—maybe grab Under Cold Blue Stars or 1972 or his fabulous new one Going Places and you'll see what we're talking about. He's toured with Mark Eitzel and Aimee Mann, had his music used in films like Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky, and won a Goya award for Best Song in Spain, which is their equivalent of the Oscars And speaking of Spain, the Spanish love Josh Rouse. And he loves them right back—his wife and his band are from there, and it's not an uncommon thing to find him playing in Spain to a packed house. We saw him play to a packed house here in SF, too, so Rouse is crushing it on many shores. We love his new album—it's got gentle grooves, musical precision, fine-drawn hooks and miles of soul. www.joshrouse.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Our most 'recent' album covered to date is 'San Fransisco' by American Music Club, presumably named after the Californian city in which they were formed back in 1983. San Fransisco was their 7th and final album before they disbanded in 1995. There was a reformation in 2004 which lasted for a further 6 years and saw the release of 2 further LP's by the band. American Music Club were a band that Rick was totally unaware of, having only made a minor blip in the UK charts - listen to the episode to get the story of why Kate purchased the LP and what her thoughts are on it having re-listened to the album ahead of the podcast recording. Recording date was 9th of January 2022 and apologies that it's taken much longer than normal to edit and publish - life sometimes just gets in the way of all the fun doesn't it?! If you're reading and listening to this ahead of 23.1.2022, feel free to send Kate a happy 50th birthday message! Our social links and email address are as follows: Twitter @Memorabiliapod (https://twitter.com/Memorabiliapod) Facebook @MemorabiliaPodcast (https://www.facebook.com/Memorabilia-Podcast-102585322133793) email memorabiliapodcast@gmail.com As ever, we explore the history of the band, with extra focus on enigmatic singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel of whom 'Rolling Stone' magazine were big fans. Discover why Rick likened Mark to Bryan Adams much to Kate's surprise. There's a track by track anaysis of the record, and a rating from both presenters. The record was released either September or October 1994 (the records are sketchy!) where the tide of manufactured pop, novelty acts and established radio and chart artists was starting to turn in favour of more alternative guitar bands, traditionally confined to the indie charts and late night radio shows. Blur, Oasis and the like were lurking with intent out side the top 10 of the UK single charts and the album charts included artists such as The Cranberries and R.E.M. It was an exciting time to be an alternative / indie music fan. As well as the autumnal music scene in 1994, we review news events from the UK, what was showing at the cinema, and which programmes were casting light into the lounges up and down the country from the television sets of the nation. Political Consultant and Speechwriter Brian Franklin knows a thing or two about the impact words can have, and the existential dread and barely repressed frustration of Matt Berninger's lyrics paired with his band The National's viscerally elegant music hits him in all the right places. We discuss the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Cincinnati band's breakout 2013 album 'Trouble Will Find Me' in this slow-burner of an episode. "If I stay here I'll never leave If I stay here trouble will find me I believe..." Songs featured in this episode: A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours - The Smiths; All Your Tone Is Wrong - The Rat Opera; Mr. November - The National; Push The Sky Away - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; I Should Live in Salt, Demons, Don't Swallow the Cap, Fireproof, Sea of Love, Heavenfaced, This Is the Last Time, Graceless, Slipped, I Need My Girl, Humiliation, Pink Rabbits, Hard to Find - The National; Cardigan - Taylor Swift; Outside This Bar - Mark Eitzel; Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks - The National

This month we're back on the time travel malarkey and we're space oddyseying along to 2001 where we've been laughing at talking Velociraptors in Jurassic Park 3, Installing WIndows XP and wearing massive baggy shorts with wallet chains. We've also been talking about Tracey's over familiarity with Polly Jean Harvey, Unexpected Fall influencers & highly inappropriate reasons for cheering at festivals. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alkaline Trio, Aphex Twin, The Beta Band, Bjork, Camera Obscura, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Converge, Dntel, Mark Eitzel, Explosions In The Sky, The Faint, The Frames, Life Without Buildings, Lift To Experience, Low, Mercury Rev, Ministry, Mogwai, Opeth, Roots Manuva, Shaggy, A Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band, Sparklehorse ft PJ Harvey, Spiritualized, Stars Of The Lid, System Of A Down, Thursday, Tool, Tweaker Ft Craig Wedren & The White Stripes.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3gV7poFnVyo3DouBDMR48Q?si=daef4c9b7c9f4147Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQ If you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. It's the end of 2019 which has been an utterly fantastic year for music (possibly at the expense of everything else...) so as is traditional, here's our annual best of the year extravaganza! We count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we discuss songs that didn't quite make it, our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year that didn't come out in 2019. It's basically like Top Of The Pops but with way more music from the former USSR... To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then in secret ranked our own out of 10 and the remaining songs from the other two's selections out of 20 (so the highest possible score would be 50 points if all three of us were unanimous on our favourite song and the lowest possible score would be 3 points). Ian's wife Lydia distributed the lists to each of us and then Colin's wife Helen added all the points up and sealed them in envelopes so we didn't find out the order until we were recording and all the reactions you hear are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three seperate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. By the time of their fifth album Everclear from 1991, American Music Club was anything but a household name. If you caught their single "Rise" on late on night on MTV, or by chance on an adventurous radio station, you are among a lucky few. Considering the musical landscape for rock, where 80s hair/glam metal was still dominant while ascendent alternative had yet to be come a proper decade-defining brand name, it's easy to see why you may have missed it. AMC evokes ideas of genres without ever settling on one, making mainstream classification all but impossible. Touches of Americana thanks to acoustic guitars, but not really any twang. Downbeat and bleak slowcore until Mark Eitzel furiously strums an acoustic in bursts of kinetic release. The album feels timeless, yet could easily be the recollection of a single night of boozing and fury. It did make Rolling Stone take notice, granting the album "of the year" consideration and naming Mark Eitzel the preeminent songwriter of the moment, so maybe it's time everyone else finds the reverbed-out beauty in Everclear. Songs In This Episode: Intro - Rise 15:02 - Why Won't You Stay 17:21 - The Dead Part Of You 22:35 - The Confidential Agent 29:16 - Miracle On 8th Street Outro - Sick Of Food To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. Working Class Audio Session #114 with Monte Vallier!!! Monte Vallier grew up in the Bay Area and launched his musical career by dropping out of high school and moving to London with his band Half Church who he played bass with. After making a record and playing tons of gigs with bands such as The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, and PIL, the band called it quits in 1986. After interning at The music annex and Coast Recorders (Bay Area) Monte built his own studio with engineer Gibbs Chapman that was destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake . It was that same year that Monte started working with the band Swell as a bass player. They Made 5 albums and toured extensively in the 90’s and eventually signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American label in 1993. They made all their our own records starting with a Tascam 38 but then took all the recording advances and bought more gear. They built studios in LA and NYC and in various places in SF to make the records. Monte says he truly learned how to a make a proper record while working with Swell. After Monte left Swell he got busy by producing other people, partnered with Marc Capelle to pursue commercial composition, film scoring, and corporate music and audio post , formed Jet Black Crayon with Tommy Guerrero and toured a bit, making 3 albums then working on 9 solo records for Tommy. Eventually Monte partnered with Jamie Kahn and Nathan Harlow to create a recording space in San Francisco in 2006. Monte has worked with many bands and solo artists including, Tommy Guerrero, Wax Idols, Mark Eitzel, Sean Hayes, Oxbow, Chuck Dukowski and Blackface, Weekend, Mall Walk, Houses of Heaven, Never Young, Wild Moth, Hariguem Zaboy, Terry Malts, The Mattson 2, Young Prisms, Wax Idols, Jet Black Crayon, The Mumlers. Episode 54 of LTA is a world away from episode 53. Whereas in episode 53, Eric Reanimator and I discussed two dangerous front men in rock, this time around, I am joined by the greatest film and music expert Bath has ever known, Mr Bernard Stickwell (Sticky to his friends) to discuss two sensitive singer songwriter types. 2012 saw the first release of new, non-demo material in 40 odd years from British songwriter Bill Fay. His new album “Life Is People” is a warm sounding album rich in its song arrangements. Fay writes songs about what he has discovered about life - both the disappointing and hopeful – through actually living it. He has worked in a multitude of jobs since originally giving up the industry (not giving up music) to keep himself afloat. It’s these experiences that dictate his subject matter, and it all rings true, as Sticky and I discuss. We also cover the 1994 album by former American Music Club frontman, Mark Eitzel, “60 Watt Silver Lining”. Sticky introduced me to this record, and it’s become a favourite. Imagine Tom Waits, Burt Bacharach and Roy Orbison getting together at a late night bar, and you get a vague idea of what’s going on here. Eitzel’s obviously had his heart broken and stomped on. From misery comes great art, but it’s been suggested that he’s often taking the piss. This is part of our discussion (and we cover blaxploitation films too). We had fun, and I hope you dig it. Speaking of Eric, he returns with his Album I Love segment to discuss a couple of long players by Kevin Kinney, Macdougal Blues from 1990 and Down Out Law 1994. Kevin was the lead singer of a band Eric has long championed, Drivin’ and Cryin’. Eric’s reflections on Kinney’s solo work makes for interesting listening. You can download the podcast at iTunes by searching for “love that album”. You can stream or download it at “http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com”. Send me any feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum and let us know your thoughts on your favourite singer songwriters, whether you prefer the attempt at a slightly new show format, or just anything music related that you’d like to chat about. If you’re enjoying the show, please spread the word. Let friends know that there’s a podcast where albums are discussed passionately. If you want to write an iTunes review in support of the show, I’d be hugely grateful for that too.
The Happy Ending Music and Reading series has formed a partnership with the arts colony Yaddo located in Saratoga Springs, New York, to present programs featuring writers who have been Yaddo fellows. On December 7th, curator Amanda Stern welcomed three Yaddo alums at the series’ performance home, Joe’s Pub, for a program entitled “Reality and Scandal.” Two of the authors, Helen Schulman and Jesse Browner, read from works featuring teenage boys in emotional, sexual and social turmoil — Schulman’s “This Beautiful Life" and Browner’s “Everything Happens Today.” This has been fruitful territory ever since J.D. Salinger’s Holden Caufield made such a hash of his prep school career 60 years ago. The third writer, Walter Kirn, went engagingly off course with excerpts from his New York Magazine-approved (as in the weekly “Approval Ratings”) Bible blog. The writer inherited a well-worn study edition of the “King James Bible” from his mother, and is offering up hilariously transgressive interpretations of the narratives (example: Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Eden is about illicit drug use.) Stern requires all her writers to “take a risk on stage,” and Kirn was eccentric here, too, inviting author Elizabeth Wurtzel, whose memoir "Prozac Nation" he savaged in a 1994 review, to come up to the stage to enact her revenge. (She didn’t.) Musical guest Mark Eitzel was the perfect foil to the authors, offering up a trio of mordant songs about marginal and desperate characters. (You’ll hear an homage to a male stripper in the excerpt above). Stern’s requirement for musical guests is that they play a cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. There was a kind of perverse pleasure, after an evening crowded with angst and tales of sexual misconduct, to hear Eitzel bring down the house (and carry every one of us with him) with that preposterously hopeful standard, “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.” Bon Mots: Helen Schulman, author of “This Beautiful Life,” on the burden of allure: “’You are just an idiot boy,’ said Audrey…She slung that cool bag over her shoulder and she started walking. She started walking away from Jake and all the idiot boys, walking away from the prison of her youth and beauty and into the hard-fought-for loneliness of her future.” Jesse Browner, author of “Everything Happens Today," on coming of age: "If he were ever to be a serious writer, Wes recognized, he would have to learn to embrace solitude and silence.” Novelist, critic and essay writer Walter Kirn on Genesis: "God basically made a huge mistake in creating man, and spends the first part of Genesis trying to correct himself."
After acknowledging that producer Benny Evangelista had a heart attack recently but is recovering nicely and should return sometime soon to man the knobs we get back to business at the TVTM. And that business is to give the people nothing. ("And loving it!") We actually do have stuff to talk about. The Voice of America was filming and recording Question Boy (Chronicle media and political writer Joe Garofoli) for a story about what journalists are doing in new media areas to enhance their positions. So I guess his being Porno Putin and Bill Walton makes him the poster boy for how NOT to branch out. We have a lot of TV and non-TV news, including how Nickelodeon is trying to get ahead of the New Dora controversy by sending out a statement about how she's "age appropriate" and that she has not, as we've said, grown into a hootchie skank. Taking this one step further (of course) we imagine how "Maisy" grows into a more adult oriented series, where Charlie ends up on "Bars." Later we have a HUGE announcement about "Benny's Corner." Here's a hint: TVTM management has decided to shift "Justin's Corner" (that's super-sub producer Justin Beck, who's propensity to swear really resonates with the young crowd) to one of our other properties, like MTV or the CW. Something good is going to come out of Benny's ticker problems and that something is, well, enormous profits for the TVTM corporation. In addition, some of the people on our TVTM Facebook page discuss what Benny's show should be about. And hey, we found BobMac's "lost" MP3 message, where he "re-edits" our reading of his script for "Bars," adding a laugh track. Yes, he's turned "Bars" into a sitcom instead a bleak documentary.
