'De politici in Europa zijn nogal traag', stelt Jaap Scholten. In zijn rol als voorzitter van Protect Ukraine ondersteunt hij de Oekraïense krijgsmacht tegen de Russen. De steun die hij vanuit Nederland ervaart is overweldigend, maar dat is niet dankzij de politici. 'Wat ik de politici in Europa verwijt is dat ze niet uitleggen aan de mensen hoe essentieel deze oorlog is'. 'Die kans is wel klein' In Oekraïne ziet Scholten een lichte kentering in het sentiment ontstaan nu het slechter gaat met Rusland. 'De Oekraïners zijn positief, al lopen ze wel op hun tandvlees.' Volgens Scholten is het naïef om te denken dat er nu onderhandelt moet worden met Rusland. 'Je moet Oekraïne alle wapens sturen die je hebt en wachten tot Rusland naar je toekomt om te praten.' Scholten, die in Hongarije woont, ziet in zijn eigen land Hongarije dat het sentiment daar ook enorm veranderd is met de komst van premier Magyar. De uitlatingen van hem over Oekraïne ziet Scholten als overwegend positief, helemaal dankzij de lening van negentig miljard die Oekraïne nu krijgt. Amerika voert de aanvallen verder op, ondanks een bestand met Iran. Hanneke van der Werf, buitenlandwoordvoerder voor D66 heeft er weinig fidusie in. 'Het is mij onduidelijk waar dit heen gaat.' Wel is het voor Van der Werf klip en klaar dat we feller op moeten treden tegen Israël, nu het land verder oprukt in Libanon in de strijd tegen Hezbollah. 'Er is helemaal geen militaire oplossing in Libanon. Dit zal gewoon een blijvend conflict blijven als het denk ik aan Netanyahu ligt. Dit conflict zal geen winnaars kennen.' De Europese Unie komt er niet uit om met verdere sancties tegen Israël te komen, ook zijn we nog erg afhankelijk van Israëlische wapens. Wat Van der Werf betreft blijft het kabinet zich inzetten om die afhankelijkheid te verkleinen. Ook moeten we wat haar betreft blijven pleiten voor het opschorten van het handelsdeel van het associatieakkoord tussen de EU en Israël. De Nacht van NTR Wetenschap - Dit programma zit op een tijdstip waarop de meeste van ons eigenlijk zouden moeten slapen. Om wakker te blijven zouden we snel grijpen naar koffie of thee. Volgens slaaponderzoeker Ysbrand van der Werf kun je dat beter laten. Zelfs als je een nacht overslaat, is het verstandig om je ritme zo veel mogelijk vast te houden. Hij zit dan ook in de studio, met een glas water.  Als we slapen, lijkt het alsof we bewusteloos en compleet stil zijn. Maar slaap is alles behalve dat, het is een actief proces. Tijdens de nacht doorlopen we verschillende fases: van lichte naar diepe slaap en uiteindelijk de REM-slaap, waarin we dromen. Samen vormen ze cycli van ongeveer anderhalf uur, die zich meerdere keren per nacht herhalen. Juist die structuur is belangrijk voor hoe uitgerust je je voelt. We slapen met zijn allen steeds slechter. Volgens het CBS had in 2017 20% van de Nederlanders slaapproblemen en in 2024 was dat al 25%. Schermen, onregelmatige tijden en een drukke levensstijl verstoren onze nachtrust, vaak zonder dat we het doorhebben. De gevolgen daarvan merk je niet alleen 's nachts. Slecht slapen kan overdag leiden tot verminderde alertheid, geheugenproblemen en een constant gevoel van vermoeidheid. En in sommige gevallen valt een slaapstoornis samen met psychische aandoeningen. Van een slaapstoornis is sprake als je wel wilt slapen, maar het niet lukt. Denk aan slapeloosheid, rusteloze benen of ademstops. Zulke stoornissen kunnen ook samenhangen met mentale klachten, zoals depressie of PTSS, en kunnen die ook versterken. Te gast deze nacht van NTR Wetenschap is Ysbrand van der Werf. Hij is hersenonderzoeker en hoogleraar functionele neuroanatomie aan het Amsterdam UMC.

Tien jaar geleden bouwde Peter Klooster tijdens een 48-uurs game jam een brawler waarin je je vrienden aan een monster voert. Het spel werd nooit afgemaakt, tot nu. Eén dag per week werkt hij vanuit de B’GAME Incubator in Breda aan de vierde versie van Basher Beatdown. In deze aflevering vertelt Peter (beter bekend als CrashKonijn) hoe hij van game-student via webdevelopment terug naar zijn passie kroop. Originaire de Casablanca, Oum est une bâtisseuse de chansons. Enracinée dans les rythmes complexes du Maroc et grande mélodiste, elle a façonné au fil des années une signature unique : des chansons nourries de thèmes sensuels, portées par une voix à la fois puissante et caressante. Si elle emprunte parfois aux langages du jazz, de la soul ou de la transe, Oum échappe à toute classification. Sa musique est celle d'une artiste singulière, libre et universelle. Artiste engagée, Oum défend la liberté, les droits des femmes et des minorités, ainsi qu'une vision écologique et humaniste du monde. Ambassadrice de bonne volonté de l'ONUSIDA, elle fait de son art un espace de résistance et de partage, où la spiritualité et la poésie s'élèvent comme une force de vie. Turque, Kurde et Hollandaise, Meral Polat propose un album militant en véhiculant le message des femmes iraniennes en rappelant le slogan « JIN - JYAN - AZADI » (« femme, vie, liberté », en français), lancé par des femmes kurdes. Sur le titre « Cenek », elle exhorte les femmes et les jeunes filles à revendiquer haut et fort leur liberté : « Cenek est, en fait, un appel lancé à toutes les femmes et à toutes les filles, afin qu'elles vivent selon leurs propres choix. Une façon de dire, « votre corps vous appartient, votre vie vous appartient, votre voix vous appartient ». This is different from a heart attack in which the heart is still working but the muscle itself is starting to die. One cause of cardiac arrest is when the electrical signals are very disrupted in the heart and start following chaotic patterns such as Ventricular tachycardia (VTach) and Ventricular fibrillation (VFib) One of the only ways to save a person whose heart is in VFib or VTach is to jolt the heart with electricity and terminate the dangerous arrhythmia. A recent study in the Netherlands looked at how important the time delay is from when cardiac arrest is first identified to when a defibrillation shock from an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is actually given. Their main take-away: each minute defibrillation is delayed drops the survival rate by 6%! D66 wil sociale media verbieden voor jongeren onder de 15 jaar. Daarvoor pleit D66-Kamerlid Hanneke van der Werf in de Tweede Kamer. Ze wijst daarbij naar het verbod op sociale media in Australië, dat afgelopen werd aangenomen. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. Niet alleen Nederland heeft het over een verbod op sociale media voor jongeren. Ook Frankrijk, Denemarken en Noorwegen overwegen het. Volgens Van der Werf is het daarom belangrijk dat een verbod op sociale media voor jongeren op Europees niveau geregeld wordt. Een grote horde die daarvoor genomen moet worden, is het ontwikkelen van een betrouwbaar en privacy-vriendelijk systeem dat leeftijden kan verifiëren.
