Canadian alternative pop artist Apricity presents her new single 'Allison Wonderland', a clever adrenaline-filled composition about imagining and seeking the type of relationship, love and companion you most want. A song that is, at the same time, a light forewarning about creating that perfect person in your mind. With an edge reminiscent of early Avril Lavigne and fueled by the creative inspiration of artists like Shirley Manson, Alanis Morrissette and Debbie Harry, Apricity dishes out attitude and melody in equal amounts. With her moniker derived from the Latin word meaning “basking in the warmth of the sun", Apricity's music offers alternative pop flair through the prism of 90s-inspired vibes with earlier singles permeated by more Evanescence-inspired dark tones. This new single follows 'All My Lies', released in 2021, and 'The Fear', released in 2022. "This song reflects the dream of having the perfect relationship that most want, even if it is a dream away. I was lucky again to work with Greg Critchley - an amazing songwriter - along with Thomas at Exeter Sound Studios and mixing engineer Vic Florencia," says Apricity. On 'Allison Wonderland', Apricity worked with a world-class team, including Toronto-based Juno-nominated and platinum awarded music producer Thomas McKay at Exeter Sound Studios, US-based Canadian songwriter Greg Critchley and legendary mixer / engineer Vic Florencia (Olivia Rodrigo, Hilary Duff, Blue Rodeo, Steven Page, Snoop Dog, Tanya Tagaq, Esthero, Joss Stone). #NewMusic #Storytelling #GreatMusic #SongWriting

Born in Buffalo NY, his father wore two hats as pianist and conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He would seat Dave in the orchestra pit during performances as early as seven years old. Dave's brother Robert would soon become a multiple Grammy-nominated classical percussionist, and his sister an accomplished rock/soul singer. Shortly after his father's passing when Dave was 10, he suddenly took an interest in the piano that was sitting idly in the living room. Osmosis? Within six months Dave had mastered the C Sonata by Mozart, and began an obsession with XTC, Herbie Hancock, Yes, Todd Rundgren and of course, DEVO. Pretty diverse for an 11 year old. He clearly made the right choice. By the age of 17, he was one of the top keyboardists in his hometown, winning multiple awards consistently for seven years. Finally the big break came, when Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls called and left a simple message from sunny LA: “you wanna come out and tour with us for a year?” In a matter of one day Dave went from playing in front of 300 in a local Buffalo bar to playing Woodstock in front of 65000. This led to a two-and-a-half year relationship with the Goo Goo Dolls that took Dave around the world twice as touring keyboardist/vocalist for the “Dizzy Up The Girl” tour, the landmark album that spawned five top ten singles between 98 and 2000. We're back with the rest of the conversation with singer/songwriter Esthero. In this episode, we talk about her work with Kanye West on his 808s and Heartbreak album, the making of her classic debut Breath From Another, and how she decided to only release a trailer of her new music on streaming services rather than put the whole thing online – a seriously revolutionary move that definitely caught the media’s attention in 2019. Songs discussed in this episode: "Streetlights" (Kanye West, '808s and Heartbreak', 2008) "Amber and Tiger's Eye" ('We R in Need of a Musical Revolution!', 2004) "Breath From Another" ('Breath From Another,' 1998) "Gimme Some Time" (2019) Esthero: esthero.net cantknocktheshuffle.com questionshiphop.com instagram.com/seandammit twitter.com/seandammit Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. When singer-songwriter Esthero (Jenny-Bea Englishman) released her trip-hop masterpiece Breath From Another in 1998, she was only eighteen years old. Leaving behind her idyllic countryside home in Ontario to pursue the burgeoning music scene in Toronto, Esthero penned an album that would change the face of music. With two acclaimed solo albums to follow and a number of high-profile collaborations with artists like Kanye West, Andre 3000, Black Eyed Peas, Mos Def and Sean Lennon, Esthero has managed to navigate an ever-shifting music industry for over two decades, all while staying true to herself. In our intimate conversation we explore everything from her vulnerability of being a young woman in a male dominated music industry, to the thrill of working with will.i.am, to how she took on Spotify.
Since the release of her debut album Breath from Another - which she co-produced with producer Doc McKinney in 1997, Esthero has definitively held the title of “your favorite singer’s favorite singer,” inspiring audiences and artists alike with the seamless blending of musical styles in her music as well as her captivating, incredible voice. Her second album Wikked Lil Grrls continued to explore different genres and found Esthero steering the ship by herself; by this point, she was fast becoming a frequent collaborator with many hip hop artists, including Goodie Mob, Black Eyed Peas, Andre 3000, and Kanye West, whose 808s and Heartbreak album featured a few songs that she co-wrote. She also provided the voice to Kanye’s spaceship on his groundbreaking Glow in the Dark Tour in 2008, which is a pretty cool flex if you ask me. In this episode, we break down the following songs from her catalog: "O.G. Bitch" (2003) "Junglebook" feat Andre 3000...kind of ('Wikked Lil Girls,' 2005) "Everything is Expensive" ('Everything is Expensive', 2012) Esthero: esthero.net cantknocktheshuffle.com questionshiphop.com instagram.com/seandammit twitter.com/seandammit Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. This episode shows a different type of musical journey and approach to music-making outside of the classical world! I speak with bass player Kaveh Rastegar about his journey building a successful and varied international career, and his hands-on approach to creating music and to practicing. Kaveh is highly on-demand in the LA scene and collaborates with some of today's most popular artists like CeeLo Green and Bruno mars. Kaveh has a fascinating background, playing a wide range of genres, from classical to reggae and punk rock. He is a member of the Grammy nominated band Kneebody and is currently on tour with singer John Legend. His story is a great reminder, especially for those at the starting stages, that a musical career is not just about big gestures and big decisions. It's built with the succession of little events that might seem inconspicuous at first, but end up adding up and can lead us to so many great opportunities and accomplishments. Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Michie Mee is known within the music industry for her unique rap style of combining reggae and dancehall with hip-hop. Many successful artists have followed in Michie's footsteps using this gifted technique. With over two decades in the entertainment industry, the Juno nominated rapper and actress is not only an inspiration for female musicians, but also all artists nationwide. Michelle McCullock was born in St. Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica, later relocating to Toronto, Ontario at a young age. While in her mid teens, Michie began crafting her rap style, which quickly gained attention by both Canadian and American rap artists. Michie would also travel frequently from Toronto to New York City giving her more exposure amongst the hip-hop elite. While performing in rap battles, Michie introduced a new formula by being able to switch back and forth between North American English and the Jamaican form of English known as Jamaican Creole or Patois. This daring move would ignite audiences and leave often Michie's rap battle competitors stunned. During a concert in Toronto, fate stepped in and Michie was introduced by Boogie Down Productions to perform on stage. This was a major accomplishment for a young Canadian MC to receive such recognition by a successful New York rap group. Michie would go on to team up with DJ L.A. Luv and form the duo, Michie Mee and L.A. Luv. By the late 1980s, Michie was featured in the Canadian hip-hop compilation Break'n Out, which was produced by B.D.P. members, KRS-ONE and the late Scott La Rock. By the ending of the decade, Michie Mee would make history by signing with First Priority/Atlantic Records, making her the first Canadian rapper to sign with a major record label in the United States. Elements of Style was Michie's first single with L.A. Luv. The single was successful in the U.S. and the duo also appeared on the compilation The First Priority Music Family: Basement Flavor on tracks Victory is Calling and On This Mic. In 1991, Michie released her debut album, Jamaican Funk: Canadian Style, which infused reggae and dancehall elements within the rap album. The hit single, Jamaican Funk, received a Juno Award nomination in 1992. Throughout her career, Michie has opened for many artists including Will Smith, Salt n Pepa, Heavy D, and LL Cool J. She also had the pleasure of touring with Queen Latifah, Audio Two and fellow Canadians, Maestro Fresh Wes and the Dream Warriors. Although she was a powerful force within the hip-hop culture, Michie's musical talents did not stop there. She went on tour with singer Sinead O'Conner and was a founding member of the metal band The Day After, formally called Raggadeath, once again showing her skills as a versatile musician. In 2000, Michie released another album with Koch/E1 titled, The First Cut Is The Deepest, which would bring forth yet another hit single Don't Want To Be Your Slave. The single featured Esthero and earned Michie another Juno nomination. That same year, while promoting her new album, Michie also toured hip-hop super group, Public Enemy. Although Michie has a profound love for music, she has also showcased her talents outside of the music industry. As a member of ACTRA, she has acted in movies and television shows such as Short Circuit 2, Night Heat, La Femme Nikita (CTV), Da Kink In My Hair, Soulfood, and has made a special appearance co-hosting TSN's Off The Record. She was also co-host of Canada's longest running rap radio show, The Powermove Show on CKLN Radio in Toronto. Michie has starred in the groundbreaking hip-hop series Drop The Beat and appeared in the blockbuster In Too Deep starring LL Cool J and Omar Epps, My Baby's Mama with Eddie Griffin and “Chicks With Sticks” featuring Jason Priestly. Michie's vibrant nature in a work environment is frequently noted and she is often asked to host events, which she does on a regular basis. Aside from her life as an entertainer, Michie is also a mother who makes it one of her duties to keep involved with today's youth. Knowing first hand the twists and turns artists often face in entertainment, Michie is an avid supporter of children striving to achieve a good education. Michie herself left university after her music career began to soar and has always spoken openly about the importance of education. Michie Mee has had an outstanding career in entertainment thus far. With her currently working on hot new music, acting roles and a feature in the 2011 CBC hip-hop documentary Love, Props and the T. Dot, this trailblazer's saga still continues. Michie Mee's reign as Queen is far from over. Michie Mee spent some time with us on our show. During our conversation she talked about: – Some of her background including being one of the few Black women involved in the early days of Canadian hip-hop – Why did she go into hip hop instead of reggae – Where did she get her influence to get involved in music – The moment she knew that hip hop would be her journey and the memory of a show in Jamaica – What has her musical journey taught her – Advance for women of color who want to get involved in music – How has the music industry changed during her journey You can connect with Michie Mee via: Website Twitter YouTube Instagram Soundcloud Facebook Michie Mee is scheduled to appear at the YOWronto Music Festival on July 1, 2017 at 6 p.m. Eastern. THE VERY TALENTED ERIN BARRA STOPS BYE TO DISCUSS HER CAREER & DEBUT HER NEW ALBUM "ILLUSIONS" If Alicia Keys and Nelly Furtado collided with Daft Punk and Esthero in the vast circuitry of an Akai APC 40, you'd probably end up with an experience as rich and soulful as Erin Barra. Joining the likes of MNDR and Tokimonsta, Erin is part of a brave new digital audio live performance armada of female artists riding a tech savvy wave of musical and electronic innovation. Her incomparable style has been praised by Grammy award-winning legends. She has graced the stages of the most sought after venues in New York City. Her musical skill and versatility is virtually second to none. Yet and still, it's hare to believe the world came pretty close to missing out on the full range of such an explosive talent. “I never really thought I was going to be an artist,” she concedes. “I always knew I had a passion for writing music and creating content. But I guess I always envisioned someone else singing the songs.”

If Alicia Keys and Nelly Furtado collided with Daft Punk and Esthero in the vast circuitry of an Akai APC 40, you’d probably end up with Erin Barra. Erin is part of a brave new digital audio live performance armada of female artists riding a tech savvy wave of musical and electronic innovation. Her incomparable style has been praised by Grammy award-winning legends. Her musical skill and versatility is virtually second to none. Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Erin was reared on her parents’ dusty record collection of AM radio singer/ songwriters James Taylor and Simon & Garfunkel. Erin’s spectacular talent caught the golden ear of John Oates, half of soul/ pop duo Hall & Oates. Erin was paired up with the legendary musician after winning a fiercely competitive songwriting competition. With the advice of Oates in tow, Erin made her move to New York City with the goal of developing her craft as an artist and live performer. H.I.S.D There’s a renaissance occurring before your eyes and this crew is right in the middle of it. This group of forward thinking music junkies have come together and formed H.I.S.D. H.I.S.D. was born in 2005 through the collaboration of eight artists of varying mediums wanting to introduce a refreshing perspective to the sound and visual aesthetic of hip hop culture, classic soul music, poetry, visual art, fashion, and photography. Mutual respect and appreciation for the cultural significance and influence achieved by creatively bridging these art forms, brought Savvi, Equality, LdaVoice, Scottie Spitten, Jason Woods, and producers King Midas and E-Classic together to form H.I.S.D. The group’s projects have gotten co-signs from Questlove of The Roots and Phonte of Little Brother / Foreign Exchange. One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk) This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed. To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series. Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you? Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowski, DJ Spinna, Rae & Christian, Esthero, Groove Armada (remix of A Tribe Called Quest's Description of A Fool), Roots Manuva, Ty, Jurassic 5, Bjork, Niko, RJD2, The Nextmen and more. http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?51655

By now you know this show is about all things soulful. From time to time we have featured guest DJs, podcasters, and a healthy dose of international musicians with fierce showmanship! Today's Labor Day Special will help you whistle while you work. We feature the talents of Honey Soul...podcaster, dj, interviewer to the stars. I'm a fan of her podcast which has up close and personal interviews with newsmakers of the soul scene. Find Honey Soul at her homesite, iTunes, and Myspace.com. Also, she is a regular DJ at Superstation ProjectVibe.net! Be sure to get all the downloads and support her wonderful work via donation and/or online purchase of artist's tracks! We proudly give to you the one and only Honey Soul..... COA I'm a strong believer in making your own opportunities. In Oct. 2004 I created a site called honeysoul.com. Honeysoul.com's audience consists of a large number of loyal, soul music supporters who actually buy music (yes I know that's a strange concept but I'm not kidding, it still actually happens). In addition to honeysoul.com featuring my own mix of "radio blogs," full CD previews, videos, new releases, and headlines I am very proud of my interviews or "conversations" as I like to call them. I have had the pleasure of talking to Jaguar Wright, Dwele (twice), Wayna, Gaelle, Carmen Rodgers, Lina, Julie Dexter, Darien Brockington (twice), Syleena Johnson, Ladybug Mecca, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Jonz, Geno Young, Jon B, Anthony David, Goapele, Frank McComb (twice), Valencia Robinson, Eska, Javier, Esthero, Yewande, Joi, Ron Isley, Lisa Shaw, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Kim Hill, Teena Marie, Donell Jones, Bilal Salaam, Sy Smith, Randevyn, Carol Riddick, Yolanda Johnson and Raheem Devaughn. Who's next? It may be you. If you're a soul artist making meaningful music, let's talk. -Honey- Honey Soul
