This Is Jeopardy! The Story of America’s Favorite Quiz Show
How did an eight-inch long tube of plastic — Jeopardy!'s famed “signaling device” — become one of the most consequential parts of the game? Some contestants train for the buzzer like they're training for a marathon. It's a source of obsession, and sometimes fear — but as Fritz Holznagel says, “The buzzer is your friend.” In this episode, hear from Holznagel, a former champion who's studied buzzing timing more than almost anyone, from Matt Amodio, whose buzzer excellence manifested itself in a 38-game streak, and from Michael Harris — the “Enabler” himself, who controls the buzzer from off stage. Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber covered all of the bases on Wall Street's rally: Stocks getting a boost from tamer-than-expected wholesale inflation data, weekly jobless claims coming in below 300,000 for the first time since the pandemic began, and earnings from Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley beating street expectations. Morgan Stanley Chairman & CEO James Gorman appeared on the program and said his company is seeing the fruits of its long-term strategy. the anchors also asked him about his take on Robinhood's trading platform, getting employees back into the office and the state of cryptocurrency. The anchors also took a closer look at the White House's strategy for tackling supply chain bottlenecks -- and President Biden urging the private sector to "step up" and help solve the crisis. Cramer sounded off about what he sees as the lack of urgency in dealing with gridlock at the ports. Also in focus: Walgreen Boots Alliance's earnings beat on stronger demand for COVID-19 vaccines, what Apple joining the rally means about the road ahead for investors, and a why it has been a rough October for shares of AT&T and its rivals. In this week's exciting edition of the BFG Week in Review Podcast, editor Neal Pollack welcomes Rachel Llewellyn to expand on her piece on the cancellation of the ‘Cops Vs. Monsters' anthology. Rachel points out the irony that women and writers of color seem to be bearing the brunt of literary cancellations. But Scarlett Johansson has her own problems. Jake Harris appears in the chat to talk about her lawsuit against Disney+ to try to get some of that sweet, sweet streaming money. Jake gives us a history of subsidiary rights struggles in Hollywood, which is a lot more entertaining than it sounds. Then we do some movie reviews. Stephen Garrett gave ‘The Suicide Squad‘ three stars, but he thought it was pretty gory and derivative and kind of heartless. Sara Stewart loved ‘Val,' the new documentary about Val Kilmer, which gives great insight into the life and work of one of Hollywood's most soulful stars. Finally, Daniel Cohen drops in to talk about LeVar Burton's semi-disastrous stint as the guest host of Jeopardy!, disappointing Burton's legions of fans with one unforced error after another. They also cover the incredible run of contestant Matt Amodio, who, as of this BFG writing, is still Jeopardy! champion. Neal also points out the irony that Jeopardy!'s new host is going to be Mike Richards, the show's executive producer. It's reminiscent of the time when Dick Cheney chose himself to be Vice President, though with probably less disastrous real-world consequences.
