Status Post Adulting, hosted by Sammie and Michelle, is a podcast is about navigating the journey of life after "adulting" by taking adult life to the next level. We examine three areas: relationships, spirituality, and finances. In relationships, we discuss platonic and intimate relationships with yourself and others. For spirituality, we dive into self-actualization, manifestation, managing the ego, and being your most authentic self. With finances, we look at ways to get off the hamster wheel by managing your finances and working towards financial independence. Join us as we deconstruct the status quo by going beyond the typical checklist for adulthood and by building a community dedicated to finding a higher purpose focused on passion and mastery.

    Ivy Insights

The Status Post Adulting podcast is an absolute gem that I stumbled upon recently and I am so glad I did. From the first episode, I was hooked. Michelle and Sammie are the perfect hosts, with their natural and cheerful voices making it easy to listen to and enjoy. They have a wonderful chemistry that shines through in their dialogue and makes me feel like I'm chatting with friends. Their authenticity and genuine nature make for a refreshing listening experience.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the practical advice that Michelle and Sammie provide. They tackle topics such as money, relationships, spirituality, and more, but they do it in a way that is approachable and relatable. The advice they give is not only applicable, but it also encourages listeners to think outside the box and challenge their own status quo. It's refreshing to hear them discuss these important topics without making them feel difficult or overwhelming.

Another standout aspect of this podcast is the vulnerability that Michelle and Sammie bring to the table. They openly share their own experiences and perspectives, which allows listeners to connect with them on a deeper level. This vulnerability creates a safe space for listeners to be open with their thoughts as well, making for an engaging and meaningful conversation.

I must say that there are no obvious worst aspects of this podcast that come to mind. However, if I had to nitpick, it would be great if there were more episodes available. I found myself binging through the existing episodes quickly because I enjoyed them so much. But this is just a testament to how captivating Michelle and Sammie are as hosts - they leave you wanting more!

In conclusion, The Status Post Adulting podcast is a delightful discovery in the world of podcasts. Michelle's hilarious personality combined with Sammie's soulful insights make for an incredible duo that keeps you coming back for more. The practical advice, relatability, vulnerability, and overall cheerful vibe make this podcast a must-listen. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a podcast that will make them smile, laugh, and feel comfortable being vulnerable with their thoughts.

The culprit? A low savings rate. My parents spent too much money on things they did not care about. The would regularly spend $300 on groceries at Costco despite both of them eating very little. When I realized that criticism was not working, I decided to help them calculate their net worth and spending. If dependency is not a bad word, nobody told Michelle and me. Since we were children our mom has implanted us with the mantras: “You must be independent”, “Never depend on a man”, etc. Immigration to the United States of America probably self-selects for the most independent-minded people and we were brought up in an entire family of freedom lovers. Independence has served us well. We were eager to start working and provide for ourselves. We were eager to learn about financial independence. Did someone say we could be free from even outside sources of income? Count us in. So what's the only problem with independence? The fact that none of us are truly independent. We rely on others for social support, mentoring, financial security, diverse perspectives, new ideas, inspiration, and more. In the book Attached, the authors discuss how depending on another person like a romantic person can provide security that can allow for more creativity and adventure. Ironically, the sense of safety that comes from relationships provides us with more freedom in our lives. This week Michelle and I discuss how dependence can be beneficial and how actions like being vulnerable and expressing your needs can help create a mutualistic relationship. Show Notes:Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel HellerCommunity TimeWhat do you think about dependence? What can the dying teach us about how to live our lives? This week we replay our episode with Doc G, a hospice doctor, who wrote the book Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. Our conversation with Doc G inspired me to think about how I am living my life. I stumbled upon this article I wrote last year on my blog. At that time, I had just recovered from my thyroidectomy and I was thinking a lot about how I was living vs how I wanted my life to look. I had made a schedule of what my current week looked like and what my “dream week' would look like. Listening to this week's episode with Doc G made me appreciate how we can be so reluctant to change our lives even though those changes will make our day-to-day so much better. When I created this “dream week” schedule, I thought I was dreaming too big. There was no work in my schedule at all. Is that ok? Was it fair? Was it safe? Maybe I could live that way for a few months but not forever, right? When I read this piece again, I was shocked to see that I am living the dream life I imagined one year ago. Though it is cliche, life truly is short. We don't have much time to waste being dissatisfied. Reflecting on my previous schedule, I can't imagine giving up that much of my time today. As Doc G puts it, if you imagine yourself on your deathbed saying- I wish I had the courage, energy or time to… what comes after that? Show Notes:Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life By Jordan GrumetFind more show notes and interact with the Build A Wealthy Spirit community at buildawealthyspirit.com!

I remember reading Shonda Rhimes's Year of Yes shortly after moving to San Francisco. In the book, Rhimes discusses how she spent a year saying yes to every invitation, request, and opportunity to play with her children that came her way. She found the experience brought her so much joy as well as new friendships and opportunities. What did I feel when I read this book? Guilt. I felt guilty because I did not want to say yes. I was tired. At that time, I had a total three-hour commute and loads of paperwork after the workday. The last thing I wanted to do was say yes to anything extraneous. Michelle and I have realized that life comes with seasons of expansion as well as seasons of contraction, seasons of yes, and seasons of no. In our seasons of yes we bring in new friendships, new hobbies, new opportunities, and new experiences. We remember these seasons fondly as times when we were exploring. Just as important is the season of no. Derek Sivers puts it eloquently in his piece “No yes. Either Hell Yeah! or no”. Seasons of no are about clearing the calendar, the mind, and the home. No to everything extra! Hell yes or no is minimalism applied to our lives. Our “no's” create moments of stillness, quiet, and boredom where new insights and ideas grow and flourish. We see this with the collective calendar clearing brought on by COVID-19. Many people report they found clarity in their purpose and direction when they were forced to do less. What season are you in right now? Yes or no? A flat tire, a broken arm, an unexpected night at a hotel could have demolished all my wealth, and yet I was walking around with no sense of insecurity. Reflecting on my twenty-year-old self, I realized that our sense of financial security exists solely in our minds. My sabbatical has been a journey inward. I deeply appreciate how we arrive at this “earth school”, Byron Katie's words, to break the disruptive thought patterns that otherwise play out repeatedly. For many years, I've enjoyed meditation in calming the mind and recognize thought patterns, but sometimes I need a little extra help when I am deep in my emotions. This is where I have found The Work of Byron Katie extremely helpful. Byron Katie uses four simple questions and their turnarounds to help us discover how we may be thinking in a way that brings us stress. Before answering the questions write down your belief and sit in the moment where you most strongly experienced the negative emotion. Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it's true? How do you react when you believe that thought?Who would you be without the thought?Turnarounds: Then turn the belief around in as many ways as you can. Michelle and I first heard about taking a sabbatical in 2017 from a woman at Artesa Winery in Sonoma pictured above. This is the first time we had heard of anyone taking a long break from work. The woman, of Indian heritage like us, inspired us by her easygoing approach to life. She mentioned nothing about her previous work life and nothing about plans to return to work. She was simply enjoying each day with her sweet German husband as they traveled the world. It would be three years before we discovered FIRE or started planning for our own work breaks, but this moment sticks in both our memories as a brief insight into a potential future reality that we had never considered. Though we were deep in our consumeristic ways and would continue to be for a few more years, that meeting felt like a premonitory vision of what could be if we took a different path. This week we take a look at the two popular ways to escape the rat race: sabbaticals and the financial independence retire early (FIRE) movement. In Same As Ever, Housel talks about how many things- patterns, behaviors, economic cycles- never change and how these constants can be more interesting than things that evolve. He quotes Naval Ravikant “In 1,000 parallel universes, you want to be wealthy in 999 of them. You don't want to be wealthy in the fifty of them where you got lucky, so we want to factor luck out of it … I want to live in a way that if my life played out 1,000 times, Naval is successful 999 times”. Michelle and I took the premise of this book and thought about how this affects us as individuals. What would be true about us if we were born into a thousand different realities where everything is different about us except our character traits? What similar struggles or triumphs would we endure in each lifetime because of these character traits? We discuss our thoughts during today's episode. This week we are re-visiting one of our favorite early episodes interviewing Andrew Johnson. Andrew Johnson is know for his guided meditations and hypotherapy sessions. He created the first meditation app ever!Michelle has been a huge fan of Andrew Johnson for years. She regularly uses his manifestation meditations and she genuinely feels these meditations helped bring in many of the blessings she received during her sabbatical. Michelle and I have been attending an "Intentional Living" Group here in Charleston regularly. We have been working on discovering our The ONE Thing based on the book The ONE Thing. Being on sabbatical, I had not thought about what my one thing or my one purpose is. Through the "Intentional Living" group, I realized that my purpose has started to narrow down on breaking down unhelpful ingrained thought patterns. Breaking negative patterns, allows us to be present and create positive patterns which I believe brings more positive outcomes into our lives. The hardest thing about breaking down these patterns is recognizing the patterns. Our brains are on autopilot and we are thinking thousands of thoughts a day without any awareness of this. This is where meditation is so helpful. Meditation helps us observe our thoughts so we can recognize and question the patterns we gravitate to. Andrew Johnson is also a trained hypnotherapist and he describes the parallels between meditation and hypnotherapy in this episode. Hypnotherapy also retrains our brain to unbreak deep patterns. By dissolving these negative patterns we can live more freely in the present moment and interact with the people around us with more kindness and love. Being in the energy of Andrew during this episode you can sense that he is someone who has dedicated time to this practice. Previously, I also assumed that my net worth would be negative until the loans were forgiven. This is where I was completely wrong. As I started tracking I found that with my deliberate saving and investing my net worth was rapidly increasing DESPITE still having -164k in student loan debt. Inspired by the change, I started saving and investing even more and in Jun 2020 my net worth was positive for the first time. The plan I had created for myself worked and it worked really well! 163. Eliminate Decision Fatigue and Reclaim Your Life

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2024 29:37

The average adult makes 35,000 decisions a day. This tasks our willpower which slowly depletes throughout the day. Many of these little decisions waste our time and our decision-making bandwidth. Reducing decision fatigue helps us be more productive and reach our goals. Here are some strategies to combat decision fatigue:Create Structure: Group or batch routine tasks together. By doing similar tasks consecutively, you reduce the need to make different decisions repeatedly. Creating a list or schedule of actions can also help streamline your workflow.Put Things on Autopilot: For decisions that don't require significant mental effort or creativity, automate or delegate them. Setting up automatic payments for bills, meal prepping for the week, or using templates for repetitive tasks can help reduce the number of decisions you need to make manually.Just Quit: Sometimes, it's okay to say no or quit tasks that aren't essential or align with your goals. Simplifying your commitments can free up mental energy for more important decisions.Limit Options for Others: When asking others to make decisions, provide them with a limited number of options. This helps prevent decision paralysis and makes it easier for them to choose. Too many choices can overwhelm and contribute to decision fatigue.Show Notes:BAWS Student Loan Episode Community TimeCheck out Michelle's New Course… Turn your Layoff into a SabbaticalFind more show notes and interact with the Build A Wealthy Spirit community at buildawealthyspirit.com!

If you want to save money but are afraid of being cheap, this episode is for you. Sammie and Michelle delve into why being cheap is considered bad but frugal is not. They look at the characteristics of cheap people and those of frugal people. A big difference is in values, people who know what they value, can say an enthusiastic yes to things they love and no to the things they don't. However, they don't complain or put other people out if they say no, they know it's something they won't be investing in.We believe we all can have cheap or frugal moments! We even share some of our funnier cheap moments. But it's all about adapting and evolving to become more considerate about your money and your values. Let us know if you're cheap or frugal at buildawealthyspirit.com!  Thank you to our partner Riverside!
