It's the beginning of a new year, which also means the beginning of this year's theme on the Batman by the Numbers podcast; World's Finest.  Yes, this year we celebrate the other big DC superhero, the one and only Man of Steel, Superman!  As this year will not only bring a new DC Universe to film, but another massive Superman film from James Gunn, so we got to give everyone's favorite Kryptonian his due. As this is a Batman podcast though, we'll also be focusing on how Batman and Superman work, or don't work together.  As we all know, they have differing philosophies on how to fight crime and corruption.  In kicking off this year's theme, we dug up a gem from the late 90s that explores this theme rather well; The Batman/Superman Movie, otherwise known as the three-episode arc entitled “World's Finest.”   This first meeting of the animated series versions of Batman and Superman gives us everything; The Joker.  Lex Luthor.  Conflict between the heroes.  Harley Quinn.  Giant robots.  What else do you need? Daniel and Kris are joined once again by podcasting director of the pop break, Alex Marcus, as they dive into every detail imaginable with this movie, including the eternal question every DC fan has asked?  Who comes out on top – Batman or Superman. If you're in need of not only a Batman animated series throwback, but a Superman one as well, this is the episode for you. Also…find out why Alex Marcus has a childhood grudge with this movie that still hasn't healed!

Let us take you back to 2019, when a little movie called Joker was released in cinemas.  Directed by Todd Phillips of The Hangover fame, and starring Joaquin Phoenix, this movie took a different approach to the villain we've all known for decades.  It was an experiment in the superhero genre to say the least, but an experiment that paid off BIG TIME. Despite the high divisive nature of the film, Joker brought in over a billion dollars at the box office worldwide, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and got two wins, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.   It was a phenomenon. Flash forward to 2024.  The sequel.  Joker: Foile à Deux.  Todd Phillips is back.  Joaquin Phoenix is back.  Lady Gaga gets added.  It's going to be even bigger, right????!!!!! Yikes. By the time you listen to this podcast, the Joker: Foile à Deux Blu-ray could be in a Costco bin behind a giant stack of Cheez-Its in what has to be one of the biggest box office flops of the last five years. Daniel and Kris are joined by the co-host of the Joy Schtick Show, Thomas Craig, as the three discuss this highly anticipated (or maybe not?) sequel.  Do they agree with the consensus that the movie is awful…you might be surprised. All angles of this movie are dissected.  The cast.  The ending.  The writing.  What worked.  What didn't work.  The musical element.  Was Lady Gaga underutilized? While all relevance of this sequel is evaporating before our very eyes, you'll want to revive your Joker: Foile à Deux opinions one last time, because this is one GREAT conversation you don't want to miss!

Last year we ranked all the actors who played Batman.  With Joker: Folie à Deux upon us, we have to do it: We're ranking Jokers. Do we really need to sell this episode any more than that?  The Joker is arguably one of the biggest villains in all of pop culture the last few decades.  The character has two academy awards on his mantle.  Whether it's pure goofball in the 60s with Cesar Romero, or Joaquin Phoenix's ultra serious take in 2019's blockbuster and divisive Joker, he always brings something to the table to discuss, and could be the biggest reason why Batman as a property has stood the test of time.  His never-ending battle with the Joker is the cornerstone of the character.  They said it best in a little movie called The Dark Knight… “I think you and I are destined to do this forever.” With a topic like this, you know we had to go BIG.  Joining Daniel on this laughing gas filled journey is podcasting director of the pop break, Alex Marcus, along with an all-star panel of alums and newcomers. Fresh off his appearance in the Definitive Batman Draft, Kris Ingersoll of the Media/Lit podcast makes his return, along with Amanda Rivas, host of the Anime x Pop podcast, and of course the flagship podcast of the pop break, the Socially Distanced Podcast.  And making their debuts on the Batman, excuse me, the Joker by the Numbers Podcast, Alex's former co-host of the Cinema Joes Podcast, Noah Franc, and professional wrestler, Brandon Vice. The panel dive into everything Joker.  Can Daniel get through the Jared Leto segment without going on a 2016 Suicide Squad rant? (probably not).  Did the Joaquin Phoenix discussion last a long time? (probably).  And…who won the title of #1 ranked Joker?  We won't dare spoil that for you, but let's just say it was a nail-biter. What are you waiting for?  This is an episode where we rank Jokers.  LISTEN RIGHT NOW!

Hear Daniel and Alex argue about the episode where there's a ghost!  One is positive.  One is negative.  You'll have to listen to find out who's on which side!  They also discuss favorite scenes, favorite Batman moments, top episodes, and Daniel gets annoyed at a certain cameo tease at the end.  Also, months after Daniel's passionate defense and thesis about Harvey Bullock being a complex character with tons of potential in a previous podcast, Alex tries to poke the bear on Bullock's different type of role in this series...Daniel does turn the tables though when a certain Robin is conveniently left out in one particular episode…If you loved this show like most Batman fans did, this is a must listen to episode! Also…we tease a BIG rankings episode for next month!

There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman.  No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender.  With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank!  This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters. Join host Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor and Resident Bat-Maven, as he brings on several guests every month to share his passion for the one and only Dark Knight.  From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned.  Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. It seems like only yesterday the Batman by the Numbers crew was arguing over which was better; Batman & Robin or BvS.  That was our very first episode, as we ranked all the Batman movies.  That was two years ago.  And just like the Batman franchise, we're still going strong! Welcome to our big TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY episode!  And boy, do we have a big one.  Even Two-Face would approve.  In the spirit of Fantasy Football draft season, Daniel wanted to combine his two favorite hobbies; Batman and Drafting. That's right.  We did the DEFINITIVE BATMAN DRAFT!  Daniel is joined by his first two co-hosts from the pilot episode, Podcast Director of the Pop Break, Alex Marcus, and Pop Break Editor-in-Chief Bill Bodkin to draft the Definitive Batman team.  But what fun is a draft with only three people??  Daniel moved some of the batmobiles, bat planes, and bat boats to make room in the Batcave for five other all-star guests!  Making a return to the podcast, we have Perry Constantine (from the Long Halloween episode), DJ Chapman (from the epic Nolan rankings episode and infamous Batman Trailer Rankings episode), and Aaron Sarnecky (The Dark Knight 15th Anniversary episode). Also, making their Batman by the Numbers debuts, and throwing them right into the fire on this big episode, we have Randy Allain and Kris Ingersoll, both of the Media/Lit podcast! So, what is the Definitive Batman Draft?  Well, we don't want to give everything away, but the crew will essentially draft 10 categories; Film.  Batman Actor.  Comic Story.  TV Series.  Bat Family member.  Two villains.  Bat Song.  Best Scene from a Batman movie.  And…a wild card category!  What is the wild card category?  Well, you'll have to listen to find out. With all these eclectic categories, it's no doubt this is the DEFINITIVE BATMAN DRAFT!  And if you're worried it's just going to be a flurry of Dark Knight picks, don't worry – we've created some special rules for some of these categories to make the draft more challenging and interesting! We thank you for listening to this podcast for two years, and we hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we did recording it! And if for nothing else, it's worth listening to as Daniel gets a pick stolen from him towards the end of the draft and has an emotional breakdown, so there you go.

Is there a contentious Tenet debate?  How did fan favorites Memento and The Prestige fare?  How did the Batman movies do?  Will Interstellar get its due?  And most important of all, what Nolan movie finished #1? We hear about attempts at peace - the secret talks behind the Oslo Accords, and President Bill Clinton's failed attempt to end the conflict at Camp David. Plus, one of the most dramatic sieges of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that took place in a church. We also hear from a Palestinian and an Israeli who were there when rioting broke out in 2000, after the Israeli opposition leader, Ariel Sharon, made a visit to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. And finally a hope of peace with the orchestra, made up of young people from both sides of the conflict, which performed a concert in the Palestinian city of Ramallah.
