Erica Matthews is a dedicated advocate, educator, and entrepreneur based in Pana, Illinois—a small town in Christian County. She's best known as the founder, owner, and lead instructor of the Autism and Movement Project (AAMP), also referred to as Autism Movement Therapy (AMT). This program uses movement-based therapy to support children and individuals with autism, focusing on brain-body connections, building communication skills, independence, and hope through structured physical activities and sequences. Her work was inspired by personal experience: she began the project around her connection to a child named Connor (diagnosed with autism at age 2½), whose progress—including developing short sentences and greater independence—became a powerful testament to the approach. She's been providing this specialized therapy in Pana since at least the early 2010s, with media coverage highlighting "magic in movement" and breakthrough moments, like early verbal interactions with students. More recently, she expanded her impact by opening Brewin' Hope Coffeehouse in Pana, which creates meaningful employment opportunities for teens and young adults (including those with autism), emphasizing their strengths, purpose, and potential in a community setting. Erica has been featured in local and regional media, including PBS's A Shot of Ag (in a 2026 episode), newspaper stories from outlets like the State Journal-Register, and nonprofit profiles, where she's portrayed as passionate, compassionate, and transformative in her small-town community. She's a Pana native (or long-time resident), holds a sociology background from Millikin University, and is certified in Autism Movement Therapy. Her efforts show a deep commitment to neurodiversity, inclusion, and creating accessible resources where they might otherwise be limited.

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values

On July 6 Saving Elephants assembled an august team of commentators to commemorate the advent of the United States turning the big 2-4-9!  With only one year to go until the nation is 250 years old, the group reflects on the foundational ideas of America, whether she's succeed or failed at those aspirations, and what the future holds for this most exceptional of nations.   Meet the panelists:   Lura Forcum   Lura Forcum leads the Independent Center, the nation's go-to organization for information, research, and engagement with independent voters, representing those who are fed up with partisan politics and feel politically homeless.   Lura holds a PhD in marketing and consumer psychology from Indiana University (Kelley School of Business). She's studied social cognition and brands, focusing on the factors that lead consumers to respond to brands as if they were people and the outcomes of doing so.  Prior to becoming president of the Independent Center, Lura was the Director of Marketing and Communications at the State Policy Network.   Jeffery Tyler Syck From jtylersyck.com   Jeffery Tyler Syck is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Pikeville.   Tyler's academic research focuses on the development of American democracy and the history of political ideologies. He is the editor of the forthcoming book “A Republic of Virtue: The Political Essays of John Quincy Adams” and is completing a second book manuscript entitled “The Untold Origins of American Democracy.” This second book describes how the political debates between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson forever altered the republic created by the American founders – leaving behind an increasingly majoritarian democracy. His essays and articles on politics, philosophy, and history have appeared in several public facing publications including Law and Liberty, Persuasion, and the Louisville Courier-Journal. Tyler's academic work has recently been published in the journal Pietas.   A native of Pike County Kentucky, Tyler's political thought and writing are strongly shaped by the culture of Appalachia. With their tightly knit communities, the mountains of Appalachia have instilled in him a love of all things local. As such his writing most often advocates for a rejuvenation of local democracy and a renaissance of rural culture.   Tyler received a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in Government from the University of Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Government and History from Morehead State University where he graduated with honors.   About Eric Kohn From americasfuture.org   Eric Kohn is Chief Executive Officer at America's Future, the premier nationwide network of liberty-minded young leaders. In this episode of the Kankakee Podcast, host Jake LaMore sits down with local ceramic artist Courtney Zimmerman (she/her), whose eye-catching, colorful pottery has become a staple in Kankakee County—and far beyond, thanks to a growing online following. Courtney shares her artistic journey from growing up in rural Momence to discovering her true calling in ceramics at Millikin University, and the winding path from student to full-time creator. They delve deep into Courtney's creative process and what it's really like to make a living as a ceramic artist, busting the “starving artist” myth and revealing the hours of hard work (and occasional broken pots) behind every beautiful mug and vase. From her early clunky bowls to the vibrant, texture-rich pieces she's known for today, Courtney explains the technical skill, patience, and mindset required for the craft—and how learning to “let things go” in the studio has translated into everyday life. They dive into everything from Courtney's first, hilariously heavy bowls in college to her signature rainbow-hued pieces, the importance of learning to "let things go" when pottery fails, and the unexpected honor of crafting personalized urns. She also offers a behind-the-scenes look into her process, favorite tools, how she's grown her online presence to nearly 70,000 Instagram followers, and advice for anyone dreaming of turning art into a career. Courtney opens up about what inspires her rainbow-infused style, the meaning and community impact of commissions like custom urns, and how her work ended up on display at local favorites like Knack Brewing and Stefari West Ave. She and Jake also chat about the realities of running a creative business, going viral on Instagram, and why finding your unique artistic voice can take time.Whether you're an aspiring artist, a fan of local makers, or just curious about the behind-the-scenes of ceramic art, this episode is a lively, in-depth look at embracing creativity—and community—in Kankakee County. Don't miss Courtney's tips for anyone wanting to try pottery (hint: patience and a good class are key) and stories from both her studio and the neighborhood that made her.Courtney reminds us that while pottery may look easy on Instagram, every piece comes with its own learning curve, backstory, and a whole lot of local love. Tune in for inspiration, a few laughs, and maybe some motivation to check out her next collection—or just notice the little art treasures in your favorite Kankakee hangouts.Send us a text Support the show

What is America's place in the world, and how have Americans understood where we as a country ought to be when it comes to world affairs and in relations with other countries? Should we be an “empire of liberty,” as Jefferson called the country? Should we avoid “entangling alliances” as Washington warned? Should we eagerly send our troops, promises, and money overseas, as has been the standard since World War 2? How do interest and morality, if there is such a thing in international affairs, play a role in the actions and norms of a republic?Cara Rogers Stevens discusses the history of American expansion and empire in this episode with Dan Monroe, Professor of History at Millikin University. Together they chart the evolution of our view of our place in the world from the Founding to current times.Host: Cara Rogers StevensExecutive Producer: Jeremy GyptonSubscribe: https://linktr.ee/theamericanidea
