The 2024 presidential election witnessed a historic number of independent voters—more independents voted than Democrats and they came close to surpassing Republicans. It would seem that now is the time for those who are dissatisfied with both parties to dismantle the two-party duopoly of American government. And yet, the Republican and Democratic parties collectively control all branches of governments at all levels. Why is that? What would it mean for Americans to embrace an “independent” politics and how likely is that to occur? What do independent voters actually want? Joining Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is president of the Independent Center Lura Forcum to explore these questions. About Lura Forcum Lura Forcum leads the Independent Center, the nation's go-to organization for information, research, and engagement with independent voters, representing those who are fed up with partisan politics and feel politically homeless. Lura holds a PhD in marketing and consumer psychology from Indiana University (Kelley School of Business). She's studied social cognition and brands, focusing on the factors that lead consumers to respond to brands as if they were people and the outcomes of doing so. Prior to becoming president of the Independent Center, Lura was the Director of Marketing and Communications at the State Policy Network.

Indiana University demographers released projections last week that show the state's population growth cratering until it hits near-zero growth by the 2050s. In fact, more than two-thirds of Indiana's 92 counties will see losses in population over the next 30 years, according to the estimates from the Indiana Business Research Center at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. This can be explained by a grim but relatively simple phenomenon: The number of deaths in the state will begin surpassing the number of births in the 2040s. At that point, migration from other areas will account for all of Indiana's population growth. Meager population growth would have serious repercussions for our labor force and economy, putting pressure on officials across the state to make Indiana as appealing a place to live as possible. The counties with large cities will be the exceptions. The 11-county Indianapolis metro area is expected to add residents at a relatively robust clip over several decades. In fact, the metro area is projected to hit about 2,497,000 residents by 2050—an increase of nearly 405,000 from 2020. And the state's five fastest-growing counties will be suburban Indianapolis counties. The question now is, “What should public officials on the city, county and state level do with this information?” Matt Kinghorn, the principal researcher on the IBRC study, is our guest this week to break down the numbers, explain what's behind these expected trends, dig into the challenges facing the state and provide a preview for a tale of two different Indianas. Usually when we're talking about economic impact in Indianapolis we're referring to a multimillion-dollar real estate project or a one-off sports or convention event like GenCon or the Super Bowl. But much of the talk in the last few months has been about a living, breathing basketball star from Iowa who in a very short period of time has changed the financial expectations for women's basketball, not only for the Indiana Fever but the entire WNBA. Of course, that's Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, who is bringing thousands of new fans downtown for every Fever home game. Clark has arrived in the WNBA at an opportune moment. The league is in negotiations for a new media rights deal, which could significantly increase revenue. And after this season, the players union and the league can negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement that could significantly raise compensation. You'll recall the outrage heard across social media last month when fans learned that due to the WNBA's collective bargaining agreement Clark's salary this season would be just a smidge over $76,000—about one-hundredth of what top rookies earn in the NBA. On this week's episode of the IBJ Podcast, we have two guests to discuss the short-term and long-term effects of Caitlin Clark's stardom on the Indiana Fever, the WNBA and Indianapolis. (We should acknowledge that for all of the attention Clark received last year for her otherworldy shooting and her pursuit of the NCAA Division I scoring record, the WNBA already was on an upswing, and there are at least a dozen high-profile rookies in the league this year driving fans to games.) Our guests are Ann Bastianelli, teaching professor in marketing at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and Beth Livingston, an associate professor in industrial relations at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business. They dive into all of these issues, as well as whether another poor showing by the Fever this season will take some of the wind out of the sails of the "Caitlin Clark effect." The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

Today's conversation is about risk. Risk is ever present in our lives. Every decision we make involves risk and the outcomes that we create all are in relationship to the amount of risk that we're willing to take and how we manage that risk.Bryan Bottarelli is an expert in teaching people to have a healthy relationship with risk. He is the Head Trade Tactician and Founder of Monument Traders Alliance and runs a trading room called the War Room, which is a live, interactive trading room. But his fascination with risk started young and never stopped. Whether it was selling the Star Wars figures he collected as a little boy for 50 times their value or using $125 of grass-cutting money to buy a Michael Jordan rookie card that he later sold for $1,500, it was clear Bryan Bottarelli was a born trader – possessing the unique ability to identify opportunities and leverage those investments.Graduating with a business degree from the highly rated Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Bryan got his first job out of college trading stock options on the floor of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). There he was mentored by one of the country's top floor traders in the heart of the technology boom from 1999 to 2000 – trading in the crowded and lively Apple computer pit. Executing his trades in real time, Bryan learned to identify and implement some of his most powerful trading secrets… secrets that rarely make their way outside the CBOE to individual traders.Today, he instructs hundreds of thousands of readers and followers to embrace and use risk to create extraordinary outcomes in life. "Servant leadership is the most aspirational thing you'll ever try to do. If you think it's easy to think about others over yourself, I've got news for you. You're going to mess up every couple of hours." Embracing a mindset of serving others before ourselves seems easy on paper, yet those who try often learn that embracing these principles is no easy task. When we work toward listening before speaking, meeting our team where they are at, and constantly looking for who we should serve, the results speak for themselves. Indiana University Kelley School of Business Dean Idalene "Idie" Kesner and ROI Podcast Host Matt Martella sat down with Cheryl Bachelder, BS'78, MBA'78, who is the former CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc. and author of "Dare to Serve: How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others." Today she serves as a director for Chick Fil A and US Foods Holding Co. On this episode, Bachelder shares the importance of embracing a leadership style focused on uplifting those around us before we lift up ourselves. ---- Do you have a question? "The very habits and behaviors that can serve you well early in your career can be problematic as you move into leadership." When looking ahead in our career, we often work hard to develop both skills related to our current or desired position and our personal behaviors that could help get us promoted into leadership roles. Experts expect shoppers to drop a record amount of money this holiday season. The National Retail Federation forecasts sales for November and December to grow between 8.5% and 10.5% over the same months in 2020. In total dollars, that would be between $843.4 billion and $859 billion. At the same time, the supply-chain issues that have plagued commerce since the start of the pandemic are expected to complicate gift buying and limit stock for some products. The answer is to get your shopping done as soon as possible, because you might not get a second chance, says John Talbott, the director of the Center for Education and Research in Retailing at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. In the latest edition of the IBJ Podcast, Talbott explores other big questions with host Mason King. Does Indy's status as a leading U.S. logistics hub give Hoosiers a leg up on gift availability? What role might inflation play in this year's shopping season? Why are gift cards even more valuable than usual this year? How can we avoid cybercrime? And are there any blockbuster, must-have gifts for this season? The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

ABOUT OUR GUEST Michelle is an outgoing CPO who has worked at CompSych, GiveForward, Dell and ASAP Software. She earned her Business Administration degree from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. [4:00] Michelle touches on the roles she embodied and the mentors that guided her during her 16-year stint at the same software company, from the accounting department to building an HR department from scratch. BUILDING HR FROM THE GROUND UP [6:18] Michelle breaks down how she went about tackling the HR department build with very little experience from establishing priority lists to finding the right mentors. SHAKING ASSUMPTIONS [15:30] Behaviors can help in preventing people from pigeonholing you — think about your executive presence and be strategic. WHY SO LONG? THE DELL MERGER [22:21] She did work through a few mergers, but Dell was at a different scale! She talks us through the ups and downs of the experience. C-SUITE, CPO VS CHRO [25:38] Though there seems to be a push away from the human resources terminology, Michelle sees very little difference between the roles themselves. She delves into what best prepared her for the C-Suite, including a tough boss that knows how to push you outside your comfort zone. GETTING TO THE C-SUITE [30:04] Michelle hands out fistfuls of advice for aspiring CPOs. SURPRISES AND REWARDS [33:22] Michelle shares the aspects of being a CPO that she finds surprising and rewarding — even if a lot of the work is covered by NDA! A BAD CALL [35:18] Michelle shares the time she joined a company led by a narcissist. MBA [36:56] Michelle touches on the value her MBA has had in her career. CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES [38:15] What are the things Michelle looks for in a successful candidate to hire. I also drop some information that will allow you to know me better as a host.
