Pia Lauritzen questions our use of questions, the nature of humanity, the premise of AGI, the essence of tech, if humans can be optimized and why thinking is required. Pia and Kimberly discuss the function of questions, curiosity as a basic human feature, AI as an answer machine, why humans think, the contradiction at the heart of AGI, grappling with the three big Es, the fallacy of human optimization, respecting humanity, Heidegger's eerily precise predictions, the skill of critical thinking, and why it's not really about the questions at all. In this episode we're diving into a conversation that so many of us—especially mothers—need to hear. Setting boundaries is one of the hardest things to do, yet it's essential for our health, well-being, and the way we show up for our families. Why do we struggle with it so much? Why do so we feel depleted, constantly giving without refilling their own cups? To help us unpack this, I'm joined by Dr. Kirsten Lauritzen, a highly respected functional medicine practitioner who specialises in women's health, burnout, and performance. She's here to shed light on why boundaries are so difficult to maintain, the physiological and emotional toll of over-giving, and how we can start reclaiming our energy and well-being. Over the span of four years, one afternoon at a time, professional biographer Rhonda Lauritzen sat across from Heidi Posnien, now an 88-year-old woman who spent her childhood in the heart of Berlin, just a stone's throw from Hitler's seat of power. Posnien shared strikingly clear memories of the fear and uncertainty that permeated Nazi-infested Berlin during World War II as well as memories of her mother, Käthe, a rising star in Germany's opera scene. But perhaps the most remarkable part of Posnien's story is her survival in a bombed-out apartment during the final weeks of the war when she was just 9 years old. A Child in Berlin is the remarkable true story of Heidi Posnien, her mother and their courage in the face of Nazi terror as told to Lauritzen. Käthe is a mother who must choose between her conscience and her dreams of becoming an opera star. She discovers the truth about what is happening to her Jewish friends around the time she attends a dinner party presided by Adolf Hitler himself. She realizes she cannot remain among Nazi society and makes the gut-wrenching choice to leave the opera. To support herself and young Heidi, she joins Berlin's black-market network and ends up dealing in more than just food. As others evacuate the capital, Käthe harbors a secret that anchors them in the epicenter of danger. While Käthe becomes ever more preoccupied with survival, Heidi and a roving pack of friends make mischief in Berlin's rubble. The war devolves, and she braves hunger, cold and feelings of abandonment as she shuttles between Berlin and the Polish countryside. Heidi's ultimate test comes when she must survive alone in a bombed-out apartment during the final weeks of World War II. Her moxie shows how children are capable of far more than adults realize. Heidi Posnien married an American soldier after the war. She now lives in Huntsville, Utah. Her story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit, even in the darkest of times. Her firsthand account of life in Nazi-occupied Berlin offers a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in world history. As she nears her 90th birthday, Posnien continues to share her story in the hopes of educating future generations about the horrors of war and the importance of standing up against tyranny. “I've been down in the deepest sorrows, but I've also been on the best of highs too,” Posnien said. “I've eaten this big, beautiful life; I never let it eat me.”
Heidi Posnien and Rhonda Lauritzen speak about Heidi's life as a child in Berlin during WWII. This is the 80th anniversary of the beginning of that war. Rhonda had learned about Heidi who lived near her, and being an author spent time hearing Heidi's story and together they present the book "A Child in Berlin: The Poignant Story of Heidi Posnien and her Mother During the Fall of Germany." Heidi has had an incredible life and is another testament to living life to the fullest each day, even now in her 89th year. www.evalogue.life Learn more about your ad choices. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rhonda joins us to tell the story of Heidi, who was a young girl in Berlin during World War II and a valuable lesson she learned about Christmas and perspective when things don't go as you expect.Episode Discussion PointsHoliday tradition of having biscuits and gravy on Christmas morning—which goes back several generations.Rhonda has been working with Heidi, an 86-year-old who went through WWII in Berlin as a child.Heidi came out of the war with hope and resilience—never losing her dimpled smile.Heidi's Holiday story has its setting in Berlin in 1944—when the situation there was dire with daily bombings and very little food. There were no Christmas presents—no tree.Heidi and her mother decided their big celebration was they were going to make a cake and they had been saving their sugar.Unfortunately, Heidi accidentally put salt in the mixture instead of sugar, so when the cake was done is was awful and too salty. Her mother slumped on the floor and sobbed at this point and Heidi thought she ruined Christmas. And unfortunately that was the theme of Christmas of 1944 in Berlin.Good interview question for family history: “Tell me about a time when you didn't think you would make it.” Those are the moments that we learn what we are really made of—those are the stories family wants to hear—how you made it (without sugar coating it), what you learned, and how you leaned on God—and how it made you into the person you are today. If you need a good Christmas gift idea—give someone you love the gift of recording their story (even on your phone) this holiday season.LessonsWhen we have hard times or are going through grief, depression or financial challenges (even and especially during the holidays) sometimes it helps us have empathy for others in their hard times.“Sometimes the happy ending is in the bigger story arc. The bright side comes from carrying on and surviving.”Sometimes we have seasons where we feel we are losing battles—but keep trying.“Whatever you're feeling right now is okay.”Its okay to sob on the floor and then get up the next day and keep living.Try to keep a broader perspective in hard times and a hope that things will get better. If you are having a good and happy holiday season, be aware of those who may be struggling. Ask God to help you find and help someone in need.Be sure to follow God-thoughts to be kind to someone.Favorite Bible Verse about Christ“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path.” ~Proverbs 3:5-6InvitationAsk someone this question this holiday season:“Tell me about a time when you didn't think you would make it.”Then listen and learn from them and their story (and maybe record it).Connect with RhondaConnect with Rhonda on her website: https://evalogue.life/Get the FREE Interviewing Tool Kit here: https://evalogue.life/oral-history1/Looking for a great Christmas gift?
