In 1999, MTV's Chris Connelly interviewed Drew Barrymore and made an insightful observation about her career. He noted that many of the characters she has portrayed derive their strength from not having parents. Interestingly, Drew can also relate to this theme on a personal level. In this episode, we explore Drew's connection to being an orphan, as well as the list of her characters who fit this description. From Casey Brodsky in Irreconcilable Differences to Dylan in Charlie's Angels, Drew has played a diverse array of characters defined by their lack of parental figures. Join our Patreon! Splash Stories welcomes Chris Connelly talking from his home in Chicago for a memorable musical memoir amongst the streets the guts and the character of Edinburgh. His latest 8 track album 'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' is a paean to his city- and a beautiful and profound one at that - capturing the essence of his love for it through his music his art and his heartfelt lyricism.. Each album comes with its own drawing created by Connelly himself. In Connelly's words : " the album is rich with strong feelings of then and now, memories that may or may not be accurate, locations, events, friends and lovers. I want the listener to walk with me quietly through endless days and nights, through the streets of Edinburgh in the early 1980s, over the tenement rooftops, up the hills with cans of Red Stripe and a well stoked hash pipe. Sitting in the Wee Red Bar, Bannermans, The Gilded Balloon, or the Royal Circus. Playing endless nights of music with my beloved Fini Tribe, dancing at the Hoochie Coochie Club. I miss it badly and have never felt at home anywhere except Edinburgh, where my soul continues to walk the New Town streets and climb the hills,"Check it all out and enjoy his reminiscences too in our Splash Stories conversation'Fini Chagall' https://youtu.be/JWBTtdYPDqM'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' albumhttps://chrisconnelly.bandcamp.com/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-volume-1Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/4jknruEhGgIBakqdA381lWApple Music https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-vol-1/1733352012Amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0CWN3WW9RLATEST RELEASES'The Birthday Poems' album feat. Jesse Starcher and Mark Radulich present their Ministry Hopiumforthemasses 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Hopiumforthemasses (a stylized spelling of Hopium for the Masses) is the sixteenth studio album by American industrial metal band Ministry, released on March 1, 2024. This is the band's first release since 2021's Moral Hygiene. Like the previous album, it features a guest appearance by former Dead Kennedys vocalist Jello Biafra.Ministry is an American industrial metal band founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1981 by producer, singer, and instrumentalist Al Jourgensen. Originally a synth-pop outfit, Ministry evolved into one of the pioneers of industrial rock and industrial metal in the late 1980s. The band's lineup has changed frequently, leaving Jourgensen as the sole remaining original member. We are joined by BAD OMENS guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and DERISION CULT mainman Dave MCANALLY on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, BAD OMENS emerged onto the American rock scene in 2015, founded by the trio of vocalist and producer Noah Sebastian, guitarist Nicholas Ruffilo, and bassist Vincent Riquier. The band expanded its lineup with the addition of guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and drummer Nick Folio. Their inaugural self-titled album, released in 2016 under Sumerian Records, garnered critical acclaim, setting the stage for their musical journey. BAD OMENS would continue their sonic exploration with the release of "Finding God Before God Finds Me" in 2019, accompanied by a deluxe version in 2020. The momentum surged with their third album, "The Death of Peace of Mind," unleashed in 2022. This release featured the sleeper hit "Just Pretend," marking a significant milestone in BAD OMENS' career as their biggest hit to date. In the podcast, "Jolly" discusses the band's creative process, the upcoming tour with BRING ME THE HORIZON and much more. On a contrasting note, DERISION CULT emerges as an industrial metal project hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Propelled by caustic lyrics and thrash guitars immersed in a dystopian soundscape, their albums serve as poignant reflections of contemporary societal challenges. Fronted by Dave McAnally, DERISION CULT's lyrical focus delves into themes of manipulation and media influence perpetuated upon the public. In an age where news and discourse aim more to evoke emotions than stimulate critical thinking, DERISION CULT takes a stand. Th second portion of the podcast features DERISION CULT mastermind Dave McAnally who discusses the outfit's latest LP, "Mercenary Notes Pt 1". Exploring the ongoing narrative of "Mercenary Notes Pt 1", DERISION CULT delves into the pervasive themes of overstimulation and corporate-driven manipulation within the public sphere, all aimed at boosting product sales. With an extensive background in the advertising industry, mainman Dave McAnally draws upon decades of firsthand experiences to craft a collection of tracks that serves as a survival guide for navigating the challenges of maintaining mental health in a media-saturated world intent on stirring hysteria and sensationalism among the masses. Joining forces with producer Sean Payne, who contributes the classic Glitch Mode Chicago Industrial sound to the tracks, Dave McAnally shares his vision for pushing the boundaries of production quality. "Mercenary Notes Pt 1" boasts a star-studded lineup of guest contributors, including Chris Connelly (MINISTRY, PIGFACE), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, THE CURE), and Justin Broadrick (GODFLESH). Chris Connelly takes the lead vocals on one of the album's standout singles, "Deaf Blood," a track accompanied by an animated video crafted by Empire Animate based in Vancouver. The infusion of diverse talents further enriches DERISION CULT's sonic landscape, elevating the project to new heights within the industrial metal genre. In a musical landscape marked by both the dynamic rock soundscapes of BAD OMENS and the industrial metal resonance of DERISION CULT, these two projects offer contrasting yet equally impactful perspectives on the contemporary challenges facing society. While BAD OMENS reaches new heights with their melodic prowess, DERISION CULT digs deep into the gritty complexities of modern existence, creating a unique dichotomy within the realm of American rock and metal.
Here's where things get a little bit strange. Back in the late 90's, there apparently was a meeting that very nearly created a revival, not reunion, of what was once considered to be Public Image Ltd, but Johnny Lydon wouldn't do it. So, instead we got The Damage Manual featuring Martin Atkins of PIL, Chris Connelly of Ministry on vocals, Geordie Walker of Killing Joke on guitar, and Jah Wobble of PIL on bass. What could've been right? But the DMA didn't miss the mark, we were lucky enough to have Brandon Ringo of the Little Rock, AR sludge doom metal band, Mammoth Caravan, join us to give his thoughts on the record. Tomorrow marks ten years since the Boston Marathon Bombing…a day that changed the city, and its iconic race, forever. Three people were killed in the blasts that day, including eight-year old Martin Richard. In the days and weeks following the attack, Martin Richard, as much as anyone, became the face of the victims. A photo of him, holding a sign reading “No More Hurting People. Peace.” became an instantly iconic symbol of all that was lost on that tragic day. Now, ten years later, Martin Richard's friends and family are running the marathon in his honor. Chris Connelly joins guest host Emily Kaplan to tell the story of the little boy whose memory lives on in the hearts of so many who will be running for him on marathon Monday. Episode 95 of Jim & Pat's Glasgow West End Chat - Johnny Smillie and Monica Queen of Tenement & Temple - part two The second part of my chat with Glasgow's own music legends Monica Queen and Johnny Smillie - of the band Tenement and Temple. Johnny is known for his accomplished guitar playing, songwriting and as an in-demand music producer and Monica for her musicianship, songwriting and her incredible voice. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol said, Monica possesses one of the "greatest ever voices to come out of Scotland'. I couldn't argue with that. :-) Apart from their own musical adventures - which stretch back to the 1980s and include the indie rock band Thrum, they have collaborated with, among others: Bell and Sebastian, Chris Connelly, James Grant of Love & Money, Chris Coco. Monica has duetted with none other than Shane McGowan of the Pogues. We chat about how they met, their musical influences, record deals, their adventures in America and working with big-name producers - including our very own Edwin Collins. “The Last Mile” The Scottish-born Chris Connelly got his start with the electronic outfit Finitribe. Championed by John Peel, the inventive band did a long and harrowing UK in '88 and so arduous that tour was, it led to the shedding of three members, including Connelly, who left for the U.S. and landed in Chicago, where he fell in with the Revolting Cocks and Ministry. Connelly had hung out with the latter's Al Jourgensen in London so he knew him a bit, but once Connelly hit the states, he really immersed himself in the Wax Trax-powered industrial scene. Over the course of his career, Connelly has been affiliated with Pigface, Ministry, The Revolting Cocks, Die Warzau, Acid Horse, KMFDM, The Joy Thieves, PTP and The Damage Manual. And my friends, that's a partial list. His almost thirty album-long solo discography is a knockout, containing classic albums like Whiplash Boychild Shipwreck and Graveyard Sex. His newest effort Eulogy To Christa is a moving, stirring and deeply satisfying homage to Nico. Johnny is known for his accomplished guitar playing, songwriting and as an in-demand music producer and Monica for her musicianship, songwriting and her incredible voice. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol said, Monica possess one of the "greatest ever voices to come out of Scotland'. And because we nattered on so much, I decided to split the chat across two episodes. Enjoy. Links Tenement & Temple on Bandcamp Pat's Guide to Glasgow West End. @glasgowswestend Music by Jim Byrne

Alternative music legend Chris Connelly released his latest album, paying tribute to the iconic Nico, the Velvet Underground muse and one of the most unique, tragic and misunderstood female artists in the history of music called "Eulogy to Christa: A Tribute To The Music and Mystique Of Nico," On this album, Connelly worked with producer and long time collaborator Chris Bruce. "Eulogy to Christa" is a labor of love, empathy, sadness, acting and channeling, along with Connelly's adoration of the dark corner of rock inhabited by the Velvets and their peers. This album sees Connelly purposefully adopt the personas of Nico, Lou Reed and John Cale. The album was inspired by the book "You Are Beautiful And You Are Alone" by Jennifer Otter Bickerdicke, who contributed to the album liner notes, noting "This is a record to be played at full blast, all the way through, as a commemoration not just to Nico the person, the musician, but to art for art's sake, for making something because it is important and needs to be done- an idea that is as rare and precious as Nico herself."www.chrisconnelly.comhttps://chrisconnelly.bandcamp.com

It's been over two years since a helicopter crash claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, three members of the Altobelli family and four others. Alyssa Altobelli was a teammate of Gianna's, and she was accompanied by her parents John and Keri. As it turns out, John was a legendary figure in his own right as the head baseball coach of Orange Coast College, a junior college in Orange County. In his 27 years at the helm of the program, John won over 700 games and four state championships. ESPN's Chris Connelly explains the mutual respect John and Kobe had for each other, and just how big of an impact John had on his team…and in his community. Learn more about your ad choices.
