Oh how we love the fake dating trope and this one did not disappoint. Paisley's family sucks. She's not only been invited to her little sister's wedding but she's also the maid of honor. The catch: little sister is marrying Paisely's ex. During the bachelorette party, dazzled with light-up penis party favors, she runs into an old college frenemy, whom she once shared a steamy, hot kiss with, Klein. Aspiring writer Klein is smart and funny, and has never gotten over Paisley. So when their paths cross again and they each find themselves in need of each other, they agree to fake date each other on the terms that Paisley helps Klein market his debut novel and Klein plays loving boyfriend at her sister and ex-boyfriend's island wedding. Join us in this fun story of two people who were serendipitously pulled together and though they are live-streaming this fake love story, one can't help but wonder if their relationship is really fake at all. ***We would love and appreciate it if you could Subscribe then Rate & Review us on iTunes! As a Phoenix-based cinephile & bibliophile, it was a joy & honor to bring on another local film & literature lover in the form of my brilliant friend Patrick Millikin of Scottsdale's world-famous Poisoned Pen Bookstore. Deciding to give listeners an in-depth exploration of a classic noir novel & its adaptations, in this rich, fascinating, & admittedly spoiler-filled conversation, we dive into author William Lindsay Gresham's dark masterpiece NIGHTMARE ALLEY & the 1947 & 2021 film adaptations from directors Edmund Goulding & Guillermo del Toro that followed. I'm incredibly proud of this episode, which gives listeners the experience of a great night of thoughtful discussion at Poisoned Pen from wherever they push play around the world. Enjoy! Bio: Patrick Millikin is a bookseller at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale and a freelance writer and editor. He is the editor of the anthology Phoenix Noir and The Highway Kind: Tales of Fast Cars, Desperate Drivers and Dark Roads, and his work has appeared in Publishers Weekly, Los Angeles Review of Books, and other publications. A longtime devotee of noir fiction, Millikin leads a popular book group called The Hardboiled Discussion Group (now in its twenty-fourth year). Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. Check my socials @jasonmbryant for some knowledge bombs. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. Evergreen's women also picked up a W, beating Grays Harbor 34-8. Shout outs to our latest Mat Talk patrons, Warrior Coach and KBnoswag. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. With nothing but sheer determination and a modest budget of 6 pounds (7 USD) per day, he mounted his trusty 90-pound (110 USD) bicycle, setting off from Reading, United Kingdom, without a map and nothing more than a pocketful of hope to make it to Reading, Pennsylvania in the United States. In the sun-scorched Australian outback, he struggled for every precious drop of water in the relentless 110°F (40°C) heat and battled the elements that seemed determined to thwart his journey. In the heart of Central Asia, he pitched his tent while braving frigid -15°C (0° F) temperatures that would send shivers down anyone's spine. Tim's quest was not without its trials. Prolonged hospital stays in China and El Salvador tested his physical and emotional mettle. In the midst of this incredible adventure, he faced a heart-wrenching breakup with his girlfriend after cycling together for an entire year, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices he made for his grand expedition. For the unfiltered and exhilarating account of Tim's extraordinary journey, his book, "Reading to Reading: A Bicycle Journey Around the World," is a must-read. Welcome to Episode 111 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. It's time to talk about the Central region AKA Region 7,  previewing all the favorites in each conference. In order: CCIW (at 1:25) North Central (IL) looks to bounce back with another loaded squad after an injury-plagued 2022 Augustana is going to Florida two different times?! and also looks pretty damn good, especially on the mound Millikin should be solid again, we trust this program HCAC (at 14:30) Earlham are the defending champs and also one of our new favorite teams for understandable reasons Franklin should be good again but have some elite talent to replace Rose-Hulman and Transylvania should be competing in a very balanced middle of this conference NACC (at 29:15) Aurora continues to mystify us in some ways but we think they'll be pretty awesome again Benedictine has some good pieces back, including a big HR threat MSOE looks to defend their title with some elite pitching SLIAC (at 42:30) Webster is as good a regional bet as any in all of D-III and now looks more offense-heavy than pitching for the first time in a while UAA (at 55:37) It was tough to follow the 2021 World Series team but we're hoping (and believing) the 2022 campaign was just a down year for the WashU Bears We conclude (at 1:02:20) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Mid-January is already here and conference schedules are starting to pivot into the second half of their grinds. And in every conference, opponents know you best making the rest of the schedule the toughest of the regular season.  On Monday's Hoopsville, Dave McHugh chatted with programs which have been reminded just how hard the conference schedule whether home or away. Also hear from our men's Top 25 panel with their thoughts on those ranked and unranked in the latest poll. With the show airing on Martin Luther King Day, Gary Stewart joined the program. Stewart is not only the head coach of the Stevenson men's team, he's on a number of different panels and boards as well as being the president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches this season - the first black, Division III coach to earn that responsibility. Stewart's unique and thought-provoking perspective is not to be missed.  Plus, we recap what Division III membership approved to change and improve at the recent NCAA Convention and of course there is plenty of other news to talk about and dissect. Guests include: - Olivia Lett, Millikin women's coach - Meg Barber, No. 1 New York University women's coach - Kent Dernbach, No. 15, UW-La Crosse men's coach - Men's Top 25 Panel: Bob Quillman, Ryan Scott, Ryan Whitnable - Gary Stewart, Stevenson men's coach and NABC President Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the NABC Studio. "It's really easy for a teacher to work 80, 90, 100 hours a week. What does that do to a person? When I'm exhausted, I'm a less effective communicator. I am less prepared to deal with the emotional challenges of the classroom. I am less likely to give grace when I'm tired. Giving 100% of yourself is not an effective educational strategy. You can't give everything."Benjamin Hawkinson is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Millikin University. There he conducts numerous ensembles including the University Choir, the True Blue Chorale (TB) and Millikin's premier vocal jazz ensemble OneVoice. Additional teaching responsibilities include courses in High School Choral Methods and Conducting. Ensembles under his direction have toured across the region with One Voice recently being invited to perform at the 2022 Jazz Educators Network in Dallas, TX, and at the Illinois Music Educators Conference in 2023. Recently Dr. Hawkinson served as guest conductor for the Millikin Decatur Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and served as chorus master for Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe. Dr. Hawkinson is an active clinician, presenter, and researcher. Common presentation topics include vocal improvisation practices of the late Italian Renaissance, interdisciplinary interactions between music and the social sciences, and mitigating burnout through time new perspectives in time management. Dr. Hawkinson holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Northern Arizona University. To get in touch with Ben, you can email him at bhawkinson@millikin.edu.
