The performance is styled after old-fashioned radio broadcasts and includes handmade sound effects and an original score featuring Christmas carolers.“It was somewhat of a family tradition growing up to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’ each holiday season in my parents’ house, so I have been well acquainted with the story for years,” says script writer Dr. Daniel Reardon, an assistant professor of English and technical communication at Missouri University of Science and Technology. “This version of the story will follow the original novel’s narrative as though the listener is reading it, and the narrator plays a larger role than usual.”Faculty, staff and students at Missouri S&T make up the performers for the play.• Besides writing the original radio script, Reardon also directs the production and plays the role of Scrooge• John Larson, KMST program director, produced the performance and plays nephew Fred Holywell and the Ghost of Jacob Marley• Jeanne Stanley, associate professor of theatre at S&T, is the narrator• John Francis, KMST general manager, plays Bob Cratchit• Dr. Jossalyn Larson, assistant teaching professor of English and technical communication at S&T, plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, Belle and Janet Holywell• Elizabeth Reardon, educational technology professional at S&T, plays the Ghost of Christmas Past and Mrs. Cratchit.Missouri S&T students provide various crowd, children and caroler voices. Today, Missouri is home to three major lead districts and the state has accounted for more than 90 percent of the nation's lead production over the last century. But actually getting that lead out of the ground requires a lot of scientific knowledge and the hard work of underground laborers. Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla plays an important role in the history of lead mining in Missouri. “The university is really, really good,” Professor Paul Worsey said, “It's got a good reputation, for practical engineers.” Worsey has been teaching mining and explosives engineering at Missouri S&T for 35 years. He says a big strength of the program is the experimental mine about five minutes away from the Rolla campus. “One of the great things about this mine is that students get to do things,” Worsey said, “They get grubby, they get dirty, they have realistic conditions, and when they leave here, they know what it is all about.” The land for the mine was first purchased

Amy Skyles, Missouri S & T, is my guest on Episode 5 of Agile Digital Business (formerly, Online Course Connections). She and her colleagues are helping you keep students on pace towards graduation by working with instructors to create alternatives for the design and teaching of lab classes. She tells us about the reasons behind decisions at her institution and how they are answering faculty, student and community questions about online and blended lab classrooms. The design team at Missouri S & T doesn't refer to their courses as "online labs." They are instead referred to as DELTA Labs. DELTA is an acronym for Delivering Experiential Labs to All.  Another service of the design team is to help instructors come up with a plan for the situation when a student with a disability is in an online course that has a lab component that they would be managing from their remote location. They also help come up with a plan for disposal of materials from lab experiments. Disposal, even in micro scale, can become an issue if the lab kits are delivered to over 1000 students in the same dormitory.  You'll also get to learn about The Laboratory Redesign Handbook, which includes tips and tricks in Part 1 and the "How to get it done" in Part 2.
