As a young woman, one of Reverend Cheryl Kincaid's legs became paralyzed in an accident. Enduring insensitive remarks from fellow believers, she resonated deeply with the story of Tiny Tim. There's a point in the story where Mr. Cratchit mentions that Tiny Tim hoped people would notice his paralyzed leg in church, so that they might remember the One who makes lame people walk and blind men see. This offered a moment of perspective for Reverend Cheryl: Tiny Tim wasn't asking to be healed. He was asking to be used.Learn more about Reverend Cheryl Kincaid's story at her website: https://revcherylkincaid.com/SUPPORT His Heartbeat through Crown of Beauty Internationalhttps://www.crownofbeautyinternational.com/donateCONNECT with His Heartbeat and Crown of Beauty InternationalWebsite// Facebook//InstagramEmail: crownofbeautyinternational@gmail.comConnect with Sue Corl's Instagram//Facebook// WebsitePurchase Sue's Transformational Bible Studies and Devotionals on Amazon!Sue Corl's best-selling books: Crown of Beauty Bible Study, Broken But UndefeatedCrown of Beauty International: EMPOWERING WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD WITH GOD'S TRUTH!

Jon Hudson Odom and Helen Jon Lee (above) reveal how they bring surprising joy to their portrayals of the iconic Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit in this year's Goodman Theatre production of A Christmas Carol. Jon and Helen share the various productions that have inspired them; how they keep the performances fresh; how their own families shape their instincts; how the Cratchits code-switch; the moving and very personal interactions they've had with audience members; the value of avoiding "toxic positivity;" the Shakespearean nature of this classic text; and the importance of scorning the kind of modern-day Scrooges who would find this kind of diversity too "woke."   December 7, 2025: May God's words be spoken, may God's words be heard.  Amen. You'all know I love Hallmark Christmas movies.  However, there is nothing quite like the ultimate story we hear at this time of year – A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.  And as much as I love Hallmark, they just do not compare in their remakes of that classic, to the ones that star Alister Sims or Sir Patrick Stewart.  Now, we are in Advent, not Christmas, so why do I bring this classic tale of Christmas up?  For the same reason I did many years ago when I was preaching on the texts for this Sunday – especially the one from Isaiah, because Dickens knew how to create a setting.  And, the truth is, while the movie adaptations are good, nothing is better than the actual book in telling that important part of the story.  I mean, isn't that nearly always the case – Lord of the Rings trilogy, Dune, the Chronicles of Narnia – I know, I am showing my fantasy/scifi side. Even the Harry Potter movies, while really good, were not as good as the books.  The same is very true for A Christmas Carol. The opening paragraph of this Dicken's seasonal classic makes one thing absolutely clear.  It reads, “Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.  Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.” So, I guess Marley, old Scrooge's business partner, was very much dead?  Or, as we get from the coronor in The Wizard of Oz – Marley is “…not only merely dead, [he's] really most sincerely dead.” Clearly we do not need to ask, in our best Monty Python voice, “Is he dead yet?”  Marley is dead.  Got it.  But why all the fuss – why all the repetition? Well, as we continue in the story we realize that if we weren't quite sure about Marley being dead, than it throws off the basis for the very strange set of Christmas Eve visitations that result in a miracle of new life for Scrooge.  And it is this new life that is an important part of our Advent journey.  The life that grows out of death.  Now you might be thinking, isn't that Easter, not Advent?  Well, it is both, as will see in the passage from Isaiah, and also from St. Paul in his letter to the Romans (who quotes the very scripture in Isaiah we heard today).  The passage begins with this: “A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.”  That branch, the passage continues, is the birth of a new leader – one who is righteous and faithful, who has compassion for the poor and the meek. Oh, how we yearn even today, for that. Now we often hear these words and think of Jesus, but Jews then and to today know these words as applying to King Hezekiah of Judah.  Still, everyone all over the world yearn for this type of leader – one who has compassion for her people, and knows they are not God, but are there to serve God's people.  The prophet's words remind all of us what is expected of those that lead the people of God.  And it is a proper metaphor for the incarnation too. So, let's get back to that stump, that leftover remains of a very dead tree.  A tree that, as Dickins would likely say, is as dead as a door nail.  Why is this imagery so important to the people then, or us now? Well, remember last week? The prophet was speaking of a vision of a new world where swords would be turned into plowshares?  Well, that hasn't come about yet.  The Assyrians were still a threat to Jerusalem, and had destroyed many a city in Judah and Israel.  In fact, in the chapter before the one we read from today, we hear about those rulers who oppress the people, turning aside the needy from justice, and robbing the poor and vulnerable.  It was a time of darkness for the people, where hope was far gone and everyone seemed like the walking dead.  The stump is a metaphor for the people who felt dead inside.  The shoot is the birth of a new leader who is righteous, faithful, and good.  That would be a miracle to those so worn down by the reality in which they lived. But the passage doesn't stop there.  This new life is beyond anything anyone has ever experienced – beyond even swords being made into plowshares.  It is what we have come to call the peaceable kingdom…where “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid…” Of course, this image has been depicted in religious art, and is the stuff of poets.  But given the circumstances then and today, many of us might say, “The wolf might lie down with the lamb. But the lamb won't get much sleep!”  We greet these words with a big “Bah Humbug!' Not because we don't want it – oh we so dream it could be true.  No, we are skeptical because we have become so used to the very unpeaceable kingdom – war, violence, human trafficking, hate crimes, cyberbullying, and leaders who attack the people they are meant to serve, not to mention difficult times in our own lives. We can feel devoid of dreams like this because it can all seem too big to imagine – this time of peace and love for all.  It seems like a pipe dream. We can be so very weary from what life throws at us that we become like those people long ago – the walking dead.  Our faith withered so much that we keep a watchful eye, a bit like a lamb near a lion, for what might next prey upon us, and not for miracles of new life.  And so this prophetic witness of Isaiah is not only meant for those long ago, but for us too.  Maybe that is why St. Paul quotes the prophet in his letter to the Romans we heard a part of today.  He writes “Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope….and again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope.”” St. Paul is reminding the people in Rome, and now us, of the promise of Isaiah – that new life grows out of what seems to be very much dead, bringing hope to all.  And folks, as I said last week, hope is a most powerful force amidst the darkness of the world.  It is the stuff of transformation, and the heart of Advent.  Hope is the spark in the soul that can defeat the darkness, can overcome the strongest enemies, can make dreams – God's or our own – possible.  And hope is the root of joy. Now, to be clear, joy is not happiness.  Joy is not connected to external events.  Joy is the inner peace we carry knowing that no matter what life throws at us, God loves us – loves us enough to break into the darkness of our lives with the birth of Christ Jesus. But here's the thing.  This new vision of the world – this peaceable kingdom and life out of death – this hope and joy – well, we have a role to play in bringing it all about. St. Paul adds this instruction we heard today “Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you.”  This welcome isn't a polite greeting like we do at the peace, or we might when being introduced at a party.  That is far too tame.  The Greek used here is more on the lines of “fully embrace.”  And it isn't meant just for people we know well, or even like.  It is to fully embrace like Christ!  Or to put it in Christ's own words “love one another as I loved you.”  We are to be the counter-cultural witness to the goodness of God in how we treat one another, how we treat those who are different than ourselves, how we treat all of creation.  When we love as Christ loved us, we become the very sprouts of new life for a world that feels dead as a stump.  That is how we, by his incarnation in our heart, give birth to God's vision of love and peace. It happens one welcome – one full embrace – one moment of unconditional love at a time.  It is the hope of nations, and the promise of the child we await.  Think about the story of old Scrooge for a moment.  His transformation didn't come about because he got frightened out of his wits by a bunch of ghosts.  It started with a warning from Marley, to be sure, but what exactly was Marley telling him?  First, he told Scrooge that the chain he was wearing he forged in life, and that Scrooge's was just as long and growing ever still.  And when Scrooge said, “But you were always a good man of business, Jacob,” Marley shouted back – “Business!” “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!…At this time of the rolling year, I suffer most. Why did I walk through crowds of fellow-beings with my eyes turned down, and never raise them to that blessed Star which led the Wise Men to a poor abode? Were there no poor homes to which its light would have conducted me?” Then the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future arrive one by one. What did they show Scrooge?  Images of hell to scare him?  No.  They showed him love – love he once had for another person, love of the Cratchit family even amidst all their lot, love his nephew showed to him despite Scrooge's nasty clapbacks at him.  And the reader or viewer sees how the absence of love from others can deaden many a child of God. That is what the Spirits showed to Scrooge – love.  Love not based on being treated well, love not based on the circumstances of life.  Just love – that full embrace St. Paul implores us to give – that commandment of Jesus to us all.  It is the very thing that will bring forth the shoot of hope and joy from even the deadest of souls, including our own. So next time you are watching your favorite version of A Christmas Carol, remember this passage from Isaiah and the epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. Remember and see that even a soul as dead as Dickin's Mr. Scrooge may be given new life through the power of love. Remember too that this miracle of redemptive grace is for everyone – for you and for me.  It is the hope that will heal the world and bring about the beloved kingdom for us all, so long as we do our part to bring it about. And so I leave you with this, the two benedictions St. Paul includes in this part of his epistle.  Maybe they be something you can say each morning as you start the day – a reminder of Advent and what is possible by God's grace, when we share with others our hope and joy in love.  “May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Amen. 00:00:00 - The show kicks off with Mike, Joe, and Cratchit discussing various topics, including a humorous take on finding out who really killed JFK. They dive into the latest "hot drops" of newly released JFK files and discuss the lack of a definitive "CIA did it" admission. The conversation moves to Alex Jones' latest clips, featuring bizarre rants and moments from his broadcasts. 00:10:00 - The team discusses Trump's State of the Union, with speculation about his behavior and an exaggerated joke about him guzzling feces. They transition into discussing the release of new JFK files, highlighting missing documents, specifically a conversation between Lyndon Johnson and the CIA director. They note that some files are being removed post-release, possibly to cover sensitive information. 00:20:00 - More on the JFK files: suspicions arise that a rogue CIA faction played a role in the assassination, with connections to Israel and intelligence agencies. They discuss the theory that JFK was killed due to his stance on Israel's nuclear program and currency reform. The files suggest multiple groups with separate motivations united to take down Kennedy, reinforcing the idea that it was not just a lone gunman scenario. 00:30:00 - They discuss the underground structures beneath the Giza pyramids, uncovered through radar technology. The findings indicate a vast, interconnected system, contradicting mainstream Egyptology's claims that the pyramids were merely tombs. Various theories are explored, including the pyramids being an ancient energy source, a weapon, or part of a global civilization that existed before recorded history. 00:40:00 - A bizarre story emerges from an Antarctic research station where a staff member has threatened to kill a colleague, raising concerns about the psychological impact of isolation. The discussion compares this incident to classic horror movie plots like The Thing. They explore the station's remote conditions and past incidents of violence among its personnel. 00:50:00 - The hosts review street interviews showing young people's lack of basic knowledge about geography and history, fueling concerns about education and awareness. They also discuss a trans person asking for advice on relocating due to perceived hostility in America. The hosts push back against the idea that trans individuals face universal oppression, arguing that most people are indifferent to others' lifestyles. 01:00:00 - The conversation shifts to media bias, focusing on the New York Times admitting that the COVID-19 lab-leak theory was dismissed unfairly. They criticize mainstream media for covering up information and later backtracking when it's no longer politically inconvenient. They also highlight past New York Times failures in reporting on major historical events. 01:10:00 - A discussion of the political podcast landscape, showing that independent and right-leaning voices dominate in terms of audience numbers. They argue that mainstream media still controls the larger narrative but is losing credibility. Fitness and masculinity are also discussed, with a joke about how working out is now considered a "far-right" activity. 01:20:00 - The topic of taxation comes up, with criticisms of government overreach. They argue that high taxes are essentially theft and that politicians act as though taxpayers' money belongs to them. A clip of Chuck Schumer discussing taxation is played, leading to a critique of government inefficiency and waste. 01:30:00 - The show closes with reflections on how billionaires are portrayed as villains. Elon Musk is used as an example of someone vilified despite achieving remarkable technological feats. They discuss whether billionaires should be taxed heavily, arguing that government mismanagement of money is a bigger issue. The episode wraps up with a mix of humor and frustration about the state of media, politics, and taxation. 01:40:00 - The "Toe Taker" Story: The crew discusses a disturbing story about a person caught stealing people's toes. The bizarre crime leaves them baffled, with speculation about whether it's some kind of ritual, fetish, or medical black market situation. They joke about the logistics of such an act and how someone could pull it off without being noticed. 01:50:00 - Golden Corral Buffet Chaos: A wild brawl breaks out at a Golden Corral buffet after a disagreement over steak availability. The hosts discuss the absurdity of a full-scale fight breaking out over food and how buffet culture seems to bring out the worst in some people. They reflect on other infamous food-related altercations and how tensions always seem to escalate in all-you-can-eat settings. 02:00:00 - Weird News Wrap-Up & Final Thoughts: They close out the episode with a rapid-fire discussion of more weird stories, including the state of fast food, strange encounters at truck stops, and society's declining common sense. They wrap up with a few closing thoughts on the bigger themes of the episode, mainly government overreach, media manipulation, and how people are being distracted by nonsense.   - Affiliates Links - Jackery:  https://shrsl.com/3cxhf Barebones:  https://bit.ly/3G38773  - OBDM Merch - https://obdm.creator-spring.com/ Buy Tea! This Day in Legal History: A Christmas Carol is PublishedOn December 19, 1843, Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol, a novella that became one of the most enduring works of English literature. While it is often celebrated as a heartwarming holiday tale, its themes had significant social and legal resonance in Victorian England. Through its portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly businessman, and his transformative journey, Dickens cast a stark light on the grim realities of poverty, inequality, and labor conditions during the Industrial Revolution. The novella emphasized the moral obligation of society's wealthy to care for the impoverished, contrasting Scrooge's initial indifference with the dire circumstances of the Cratchit family. By humanizing the struggles of the working poor, A Christmas Carol drew public attention to issues such as child labor, inadequate housing, and exploitative working conditions—concerns that were increasingly debated in Parliament and social reform circles. The story's publication coincided with the rise of the Chartist movement, which advocated for political and legal reforms, including universal male suffrage and better labor protections. It also aligned with growing public support for legislation like the Ten Hours Act (passed in 1847), which limited the working hours of women and children in factories. Dickens himself was a vocal critic of the Poor Laws, a legal framework that often penalized poverty rather than addressing its causes, and his novella reinforced calls for a more humane approach to social welfare. While A Christmas Carol was not directly responsible for specific legal changes, its immense popularity helped shift public attitudes. By embedding its critique of social injustice within a compelling and widely accessible narrative, Dickens inspired empathy and bolstered movements advocating for legal reforms to improve the lives of the poor and working class. This fusion of storytelling and social commentary ensured the novella's enduring influence on both culture and conscience.Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson, is set to appear in a Pennsylvania court for two hearings related to his extradition to New York. Mangione was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel in what authorities describe as a premeditated act of terrorism. A New York grand jury has indicted Mangione on 11 counts, including first-degree murder and murder as an act of terrorism. At the time of his arrest, Mangione was found with a self-assembled 9mm handgun, a homemade silencer, and multiple fake IDs, one of which was allegedly used to check into a hostel near the crime scene. Pennsylvania police have charged Mangione with forgery and illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for these charges. Following this, a second hearing will address his extradition to New York.Under Pennsylvania law, Mangione can consent to extradition by waiving his rights in court. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indicated that Mangione is unlikely to contest the transfer. Prosecutors allege the killing was intended to intimidate or coerce, qualifying it as terrorism under New York law. Mangione has been held in custody since his arrest, and his defense team has declined to comment.UnitedHealth executive murder suspect to appear in court over New York extradition | ReutersThe U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against CVS, accusing the pharmacy chain of filling illegal opioid prescriptions and billing federal health programs, actions allegedly contributing to the opioid crisis. Unsealed in a Rhode Island federal court, the complaint claims that from 2013 to the present, CVS violated the Controlled Substances Act by filling excessive or dangerous prescriptions, including from doctors running "pill mills." The lawsuit alleges CVS's performance-driven culture ignored warning signs and led to overdoses, with some patients dying shortly after filling prescriptions. The DOJ claims CVS pharmacists were pressured to prioritize speed over safety, ignoring red flags and internal warnings about questionable prescribers. For example, CVS continued filling prescriptions for an Alabama doctor under investigation in 2015, who was later arrested in 2016, and for a Pennsylvania doctor accused of dispensing opioids without seeing patients. The lawsuit also highlights deaths linked to 10 individual patients who received illicit prescriptions from CVS.CVS disputes the allegations, asserting it has cooperated with the DOJ's four-year investigation and strongly disagrees with the claims. This lawsuit follows CVS's 2022 agreement to pay nearly $5 billion to settle similar opioid-related claims, without admitting wrongdoing. The DOJ lawsuit originated as a whistleblower complaint from a former CVS employee, who criticized the company's assembly-line approach to dispensing medications. The case reflects ongoing accountability efforts in the face of a crisis that has claimed over 800,000 lives since 1999.US accuses CVS of filling, billing government for illegal opioid prescriptions | ReutersPresident-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk have strongly opposed House Speaker Mike Johnson's proposed spending bill to avert a government shutdown before the holidays, creating significant turmoil within the Republican Party. Johnson's plan, which requires bipartisan support, aims to fund the government through next year and includes $100 billion in disaster aid and other provisions. However, Trump and Musk have denounced the measure, with Musk advocating for a shutdown unless deeper spending cuts are made. Trump has threatened to campaign against Republicans who support the proposal. The drama unfolded as Johnson attempted to negotiate a compromise, acknowledging he needed Democratic votes to pass the measure. Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance pushed for incorporating the debt ceiling into the discussions, a contentious issue not expected to arise until 2025. Johnson's speakership, held since October, now appears precarious as criticism mounts from both Republican hardliners and representatives from disaster-hit states. The White House criticized the threat of a shutdown, warning it would harm families during the holidays and disrupt critical services. This political maneuvering mirrors a similar 2018 standoff under Trump that resulted in the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. With the new Congress set to convene on January 3, Johnson's ability to maintain his leadership is uncertain, as tensions within the GOP continue to escalate. Meanwhile, Musk declared victory as Johnson's bill faltered, claiming it reflected the public's voice.Trump, Musk Threaten US Shutdown and Shake Up Republican PartyThe IRS announced it is delaying until 2026 the implementation of a regulation that aims to address a loophole in required minimum distribution (RMD) rules for retirement accounts. This loophole created confusion for workers born in 1959 due to inconsistencies in the SECURE 2.0 Act, which Congress passed in 2022 to allow employees to keep money in tax-advantaged accounts longer. The Act gradually raises the RMD age from 72 to 75, with workers born after 1960 starting withdrawals at age 75, while those born before 1959 begin at 73.However, the law's drafting inadvertently assigned 1959-born individuals conflicting RMD start dates of both 73 and 75. The proposed regulation was intended to clarify this, but its effective date has now been postponed. The broader rule increasing the RMD age remains set to begin phasing in on January 1, 2025.Additionally, the delayed regulations clarify that withdrawals from Roth accounts cannot satisfy RMD requirements, making such distributions eligible for rollovers. The delay gives affected workers and financial institutions more time to adjust to these complex changes while the IRS finalizes guidance.Regular readers may recall that I wrote a column back in August advocating for a change to how required minimum distributions are handled. In that piece, I argued that instead of raising the RMD age, the IRS should implement an estate tax on retirement accounts left untouched at death. This approach would simplify the system, discourage using retirement accounts as tax-free inheritance vehicles, and ensure their intended purpose: funding retirement. IRS Delays Proposal to Close 401(k) Withdrawal Age Rule LoopholeIRS Should've Put an Estate Tax on Inherited Retirement Accounts This is a public episode. Oh Oh Oh - The Contemporary Geo-Politics of a Christmas Carol The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0001 In keeping with the Christmas spirit the Black Spy Podcast team brings you an analysis of a classic piece of Christmas literature through the prism of contemporary events, so hold your Victorian horses and step inside this brilliant and entertaining Christmas podcast. Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," while set in Victorian England, offers profound insights into socio-economic disparities, moral responsibility, and the human capacity for change, themes that resonate powerfully in the context of contemporary geopolitics in 2024. The narrative revolves around Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who embodies the era's capitalist excesses, and his transformative journey prompted by the visitations of three spirits. This tale can be viewed as an allegory for the moral imperatives facing today's global leaders, particularly in a world grappling with inequality, climate change, and the consequences of capitalism. Economic Inequality and Social Responsibility In "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge's initial indifference to the plight of the impoverished reflects a broader socio-economic divide that is alarmingly prevalent today. As of 2024, the world faces stark economic inequalities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and geopolitical tensions. Wealth concentration among the elite has reached staggering levels, with a significant portion of the global population struggling to meet basic needs. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals to Scrooge the harsh realities faced by the Cratchit family, particularly Tiny Tim, whose health and future are jeopardized by their poverty. This aspect of the story mirrors contemporary discussions around social safety nets and the need for governments to intervene in markets to ensure equitable access to resources, healthcare, and education. Just as Scrooge is called to acknowledge his moral responsibility to others, today's leaders are similarly challenged to address systemic inequalities and implement policies that foster social welfare. Environmental Concerns and Global Responsibility The spectre of climate change looms large in contemporary geopolitics, echoing the moral awakening experienced by Scrooge. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and greed. In 2024, the planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, with extreme weather events and biodiversity loss underscoring the urgent need for collective action. Many governments and organizations are grappling with the ethical implications of their environmental policies, much like Scrooge's eventual realization that his actions have far-reaching consequences. The Paris Agreement and subsequent climate accords represent attempts to foster global cooperation, yet the disparity in commitment levels among nations reflects the ongoing struggle between economic interests and moral imperatives. Scrooge's transformation symbolizes the potential for leaders to evolve from self-interest to a broader commitment to sustainability and stewardship. War, Peace, and Humanitarian Obligations The geopolitical landscape of 2024 is also marked by ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, from the war in Ukraine to various regional disputes in the Middle East and Africa. The indifference of Scrooge to the suffering around him parallels the apathy of some global leaders toward humanitarian needs. In Dickens' narrative, the moral awakening of Scrooge leads him to philanthropy and community engagement, a lesson that resonates with the contemporary need for nations to prioritize diplomacy and humanitarian aid. As nations grapple with the consequences of war, including displacement and poverty, the call for empathy and action becomes increasingly urgent. Just as Scrooge's character is redeemed through acts of kindness and generosity, modern leaders are similarly tasked with recognizing their interconnectedness and the moral obligation to assist those in need, regardless of borders. Conclusion  In conclusion, "A Christmas Carol" serves as a timeless reflection on the human condition and the responsibilities we hold toward one another. Through the lens of 2024's geopolitical landscape, Dickens' narrative underscores the importance of addressing economic inequality, environmental degradation, and humanitarian crises. The lessons learned by Scrooge are as relevant today as they were in the 19th century, reminding us that true leadership requires compassion, accountability, and a commitment to the common good. Bit of a Christmas special for you guys, we're comparing and contrasting the stories of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in its various (mostly the Muppets) adaptations, and "It's A Wonderful Life." So, enjoy the Christmas season with your families, push a muppet off a window ledge, crash your car into a tree and come back from a supernatural experience being glad that it happened, and maybe give another shovel full of that nice, clean coal to your bookkeepers this year. Merry Christmas! (00:00) Intro/Banter (5:30) The part where we figure out Nathan's microphone isn't turned on (17:00) Philmosophical

Sleepy Time Tales Podcast – Creating a restful mindset through relaxing bedtime stories

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens We pick up on this year's bedtime edition of A Christmas Carol with Scrooge in the company of the Ghost of Christmas Present and watching the festive activities of the Cratchit family. Scrooge finds his heart-strings tugged by the plight of Tiny Tim, and then finds himself flying to observe many other poor folks making the best of their Christmas. And this includes the family of his nephew. A lot seems to be happening, but I'm sure you'll find yourself fast asleep in short order. Story (02:54)  SleepPhones, our perfect partnership In our experience the best way to experience the bedtime stories of Sleepy Time Tales is with some type of headphone or earbud, but they can be cumbersome and uncomfortable. So we've partnered SleepPhones, manufacturers of headphones designed specifically to sleep in! They use a thin speaker fitted to a comfortable headband and have options from the cost effective wired headphones to the convenient Bluetooth model and will work with Sleepy Time Tales to improve your night's sleep. What joy and wonder await us as we follow our once-cold-hearted protagonist, now bursting with the warmth and fervour of newly kindled humanity? His promise to live in the Past, the Present, and the Future rings clear—a vow both to honour the lessons of the Spirits and to cherish every moment gifted to him. And as he laughs—a laugh unpractised yet now most illustrious—we marvel at the capacity for change within us all.We unfurl the final moral of our story: that each of us has the power to affect the world around us positively. You'll share in Scrooge's giddy joy, his wild extravagance as he purchases the grandest turkey for the Cratchit family, and his acts of unlooked-for kindness. Generosity spills from Scrooge like a cascade, touching every life in its path. As he announces increments of salary with gleeful spirit and revels in the genuine felicity of familial love at his nephew's Christmas gathering, we see his heart's complete transformation. So let us walk with Scrooge in these final moments, his steps light with the spirit of change, his laughter a chime of hope to rival even the Christmas bells themselves. Small acts of goodwill, my dear listeners, have a power that resonates beyond their initial tolling. Our tale culminates with the most profound Christmas blessing—Scrooge's transformation becomes a testament to the endurance of the human spirit and the joy found in caring for one another.

Jacob Marley was dead to begin with (he always is!) and It Happened One Year is there to pick up the slack, in what was originally conceived as the show's holiday episode, before the hosts got carried away and kept recording Christmassy things (tune in next week!). Herein, Sarah & Joe get into all things Cratchit in order to discuss the acclaimed 1984 movie version of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott, Frank Finlay, David Warner, and Susannah York. This opens up the larger conversation of best film Scrooges, best family versions, best musical versions, best TV versions, and much, much more. It's a Dickens-ophile's dream! Rising up in the debate are the likes of Alastair Sim, the Muppets, Reginald Owen, Albert Finney, Mr. Magoo, Basil Rathbone, Bill Murray, Patrick Stewart, Jim Carrey, Henry Winkler, and many more! Then - after all the "God Bless Us, Everyones" have been tossed around like Christmas crackers - the hosts perform that most IHOY of rituals - playing a trivia game for the listeners. Enjoy!
