In this week's basketball coaching conversation, Houston Christian University head coach Craig Doty joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on adapting to change.Doty arrived at Houston Christian University as a three-time national champion head coach and three-time national coach of the year, with 12 years of head college coaching experience and a 259-126 career record which includes a 31-10 mark in postseason play.Doty spent six seasons as head men's basketball coach at Emporia State University in Kansas. Known as a program-builder, Doty improved the Emporia State program from an inherited 9-19 record (4-15 MIAA) to a 23-9 record (15-7 MIAA) in 2022-23. In each of his final three seasons at ESU, Doty's teams appeared in the NABC Division II national polls while being ranked in the top 25 for six weeks in 2022-23 and as high as #15 in 2023-24.Prior to his arrival in Emporia, Doty led Graceland University to national prominence. In just two seasons at Graceland, Doty's program had a 49-22 record and won the 2018 NAIA Division I National Championship in the school's first trip to the national tournament. Along the way Doty earned NAIA National Coach of the Year and the 2018 Don Meyer Award. Upon winning the 2018 national championship, Doty had led his teams to the National Championship game four out of the previous five seasons.Doty began his head coaching career as the head men's basketball coach at Rock Valley College. In his four years he built a national powerhouse. When Doty took over the program in 2012, Rock Valley was ranked last in Region IV preseason poll. Over the next four years, Doty would lead the Golden Eagles to four consecutive national tournaments including three straight national title games. Rock Valley was crowned National Champions in 2014 and in 2016, the first and second national championships in the 50-year program history.

A longtime associate of Kill, the relationship between Klein and NM State's head coach stretches back to 1994 when the two were on the same football staff at Saginaw Valley State.Klein's most recent collegiate stop came at UCONN in Storrs, Conn., where he was the director of football strength & conditioning for a period of time beginning in January of 2017.From 2010 until the early stages of 2017, Klein's services were called upon by Minnesota of the Big Ten. As the head strength & conditioning coach for the Gophers' football team, the squad made significant strides in strength, agility and endurance which have positively impacted their competitive performances.For three years prior to joining the Gopher staff, Klein served as the Director of Sports Performance at Northern Illinois, where he oversaw sports performance for all 17 sports.Klein coached at Southern Illinois from 2001-07. During his time at Southern Illinois, Klein designed the strength and conditioning programs for the five-time Missouri Valley Conference Champion Saluki men's basketball team and the three-time Gateway Conference Champion football team. Klein also helped design a new strength and conditioning center while he was at Southern Illinois.Prior to taking on the strength and conditioning program, Klein coached the defensive line at SIU in 2000 and 2001. Klein coached the defensive line and implemented the strength and conditioning program at Emporia (Kan.) State from 1999-2000. The NCAA Division II level is where Klein started as he signed on with Saginaw Valley State to be the Cardinals' assistant coach for both football and track & field from 1994-99. Along with his coaching duties, Klein designed and created the strength & conditioning program for the University Center, Mich., institution.Klein's certifications include a Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a USA Weightlifting Club Coach from USA Weightlifting and Speed and Explosion from the National Association of Speed and Explosion.A native of Apple Valley, Minn., Klein earned his bachelor's degree from Carleton College in 1993 before secure his master's degree from Emporia State in 2000. He and his wife, Allison, have two daughters, Taegan and Torin.

This week we're talking with Brandy Burch, a co-founder and the CEO of Benefitbay, a company that works with other companies and ICHRA  — Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement, which is a health insurance solution for a company to offer its employees.Brandy started her professional career in the Kansas City area, including two years with Visit KC. But she's had an interesting journey — at least certainly not a straight line. She graduated from Emporia State with a degree in accounting before working for various companies. But then about 10 years after graduating, she went back to school for another undergrad degree before getting a Masters of Business Administration. In 2021 she was part of a group that started what became Benefitbay in Omaha, Nebraska. A year later, in April 2022, she was selected as the company's CEO. After securing a second round of funding, Brandy moved the company's headquarters to the Kansas City area earlier this year. Dylan Geissert is the Associate Head Coach for the North Dakota State University Women's Basketball Team. Prior to being named Associate Head Coach, he worked as an Assistant Coach at NDSU from 2019-2023 and a Graduate Student Manager at the University of Kansas from 2017-2019. He graduated from Emporia State University in 2016 where he was a Student Assistant Coach and Male Practice Player for the Women's Basketball Team. Dylan talks about growing up in Herington, Kansas, playing 3 sports, and having an appreciation for women's sports because his mom is a great athlete. He discusses his intention to play baseball at Emporia State before an injury made him retire from the sport, how he got involved with the women's basketball team, the dominance that Emporia State has in Division II Women's Basketball, going from a Male Practice Player to a Student Assistant Coach, working for Head Coach Jory Collins, and making the 2015 Final Four. Dylan then details the opportunity to be the Graduate Manager for Kansas, going from a D2 school to a D1 school, working in the Big 12 Conference, and what his role entailed. He explains why he chose to move to Fargo, ND, when Jory Collins got the Head Coaching job at NDSU, his time as Assistant Coach, recruiting, coaching through the pandemic, building NDSU back up, and being named Associate Head Coach this past May.

She was just named to Editor & Publisher's “25 Under 35.” Sarah is a graduate of Emporia State University in Kansas, where she was editor-in-chief of her school paper, as well as Columbia School of Journalism.Sarah talked about her current role and the work that CPJ does to fight for reporter's rights and safety worldwide (the organization helped free 130 journalists in 2022). She also shared her journalism origin story and walked us through the award-winning team coverage she was a part of at Emporia State exposing a Title IX sexual assault cover-up involving a tenured professor and a student.
