We've got a live one here! This is a live session with the celebrated Canadian artist Tony D, who for decades has been known as an electrifying guitar talent, equally expressive in styles ranging from blues to swing to acid rock to flamenco! Tony has travelled the world playing music, and has a trophy case worth of awards; but somehow his new record Electric Delta is the first proper new Tony D solo offering of original material in a couple of decades! And the album release party for this long-awaited new record is what we hear in this highly celebratory live CKUA Hidden Track Session. Between his solo projects, the celebrated Canadian band MonkeyJunk, and plenty of other musical activities, he's toured everywhere from Memphis to Italy, and all across Canada! He's even performed in the northernmost continuously inhabited place in the world — Alert, Nunavut. Alberta has long been a kind of second home to Tony D; and these days he's actually a part-time resident of this part of the world, when he isn't on the road, as his partner and family live in the province. In this final episode of Hidden Track Season 5, we hear the electrifying Tony D performing in front of a rapt audience at CKUA's Live Performance Space in Edmonton, joined by his longtime bass player Joe Hawkins, as well as two superb Edmonton-based musicians: keyboardist Rooster Davis and drummer Jamie Cooper. The sparks really fly between these four musicians and the audience, as they perform a diverse set of original material — a Tony D classic called "Argentinian Surf Tango", plus two standouts from the new album, "Highway 7" and the rousing opening salvo: a dynamic instrumental workout entitled "NAS". Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer Recording/Mastering for this session provided by Brendan Cross. The Hidden Track podcast is a CKUA production, made possible by the generosity of our donors. Thank you for your support!

Steve Marriner is our special guest this week on Mulligan Stew. We know Steve from the award-winning Monkey Junk and the very popular Manx Marriner Mainline. He's a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Hope Dies Last is his second solo album. His first was in 2006. (He's been just a tad busy) HDL has 15 musicians in the credits..so it's a true group effort. And signals great things ahead in his solo career. If you remember our Greg Keelor solo album Episode #152 it was Greg who raved about working with guitarist Jimmy Bowskill. (Sheepdogs. Jim Cuddy) Steve Marriner worked tirelessly with Jimmy to get these songs sounding just right. Have a listen and let the stories flow.

In this hour of The Roadhouse, I've got a set from the Delta, a track that borders on rockabilly and the usual bouquet of brightly-colored blues. Mitch Kashmar, Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers, Mike Zito, Dave Weld, and Monkeyjunk - all fill the bill in the hour - the next hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 611th Roadhouse Podcast.
Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk plays a blend of swamp-rock roots and blues that in the relatively short time has earned them a collective 20 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, a Blues Music Award (USA), and a JUNO Award in 2012. Monkey Junk is three musicians who individually had established careers prior to forming MonkeyJunk: vocalist, baritone guitarist, harmonica and organ player Steve Marriner, lead guitarist Tony D and drummer/percussionist Matt Sobb. We are delighted that they will join us on Music FridayLive! this week with their new album, Moon Turn Red. The strands formed in 2011 bring a genre-defying sound they like to call Artisanal. Thoughtful and provocative lyrics dominate, carried by a piano with a subdued drum and sophisticated guitar grooves. The result is almost jazz, but not quite – the Strands straddle the line between jazz and pop. Lead singer Amanda Campbell delivers original material - much of it written by the band's keyboard and piano artist Susan Ferrari - with a smooth voice, backed by the legendary Richard Green on lead guitar, Ferrari on piano and keys and the founder of the group, Paul, on bass. Restrained, thoughtful, striking, the Strands stand out and we are glad they are taking the time to talk with us on Music FridayLive!.
Show #292 – Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With Musicians You Shold Know Les Copeland caught the attention of “Honeyboy Edwards” and Michael Frank and recorded his debut on Earwig in 2010. His sophomore effort, also on Earwig, is now out and has folks talking about Les more and more. We’ll talk about his journey and discuss and listen to the songs from To Be In Your Company Andy Cohen has spent many years on the road sharing his talents as a masterful acoustic guitarist, folklorist and troubadour. His new album is entitled Road Be Kind and contains one original and 15 interpretations of older songs. Andy and I will discuss his musical education and the new album. Ryan Lee Crosby came to us through Couch Kid Ted Drozdowski. Ryan’s fifth album, Busker On The Broad Highway is a collection of 4 original tunes and 6 blues classics; Ryan recorded it all live to tape with no overdubs to capture the spirit of the music. He and I will sit and talk about the road, the life changes and where he is today in his life. Monkey Junk originally Sat On The Couch back on November 18, 2013 when we discussed their careers and the band and heard songs from their All Frequencies album. This week Steve, Tony and Matt return to talk about the new release, Moon Turn Red, which was released September 25th. We’ll find out what the guys have been up to since their last visit, check out Tuneage from the new album and find out where they are heading next.

This edition of The Roadhouse returns the show to its roots from the blues-rock fest in Roadhouse 449. It's upbeat, uptempo blues, some with grit, some very, very smooth. Monkeyjunk, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones, John Ginty, and Big Maybelle round 60 minutes with a no-doubt hour of blues - an hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This week, we salute the talent of Etta James, through tracks you may not hear elsewhere. But, it's not all Etta. Little Freddie King, Studebaker John & The Hawks, Joe Louis Walker, Bryce Janey, and Monkeyjunk are out there waiting to compel uncontrollable chair-dancing. It's an ubeatable combination and an unbeatable foundation for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 36qst Roadhouse.
This edition of The Roadhouse is clearly upbeat. Nick Moss, Monster Mike Welch, Matt Hill, Mighty Lester, and Monkeyjunk make the point loud and clear that blues is more than just a man with a guitar on a porch. Contrary to what strangers to the form might think, blues can be upbeat, too, as evidenced in this hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 347th Roadhouse.
In the midst of a brutal Midwestern US heat wave, we're cooling with blues in the 336th Roadhouse. Big Daddy Wilson, Monkeyjunk, The Jeff Golub Band, Larry McCray, and The Alexis P. Suter Band provide blues diversity, but never a diversion from being another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
Get your chair-dancing cushion adjusted before settling in for the 334th Roadhouse. The blowout ahead includes Terry Hanck, Mighty Sam McClain, Monkeyjunk, Chris Thomas King, and Jimmy Dillon. With a featured artist set plunked into the middle to give your heart a rest, this edition has a little of everything and a lot of upbeat. It's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 334th Roadhouse.
The 299th Roadhouse focuses on one of the bigger slices of the many blues genres - contemporary blues. Mississippi Heat, Roomful of Blues, Lynwood Slim & The Igor Prado Band, Jay Gaunt, and Monkeyjunk showcase some of the best contemporary blues going and provide the basis for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This week's edition of The Roadhouse holds true to its tagline with some older tracks and new, some straight-up blues and some blends, some old familiar names and some you've not heard. Monkeyjunk, Lucky Peterson, Jimmy Bowskill, Son Seals, and Freddie King roll out another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 292nd Roadhouse.

Though some might not believe it, blues can be fun music. The 257th Roadhouse proves out that theory with fun tracks from J.B. Hutto, Monkeyjunk, Moreland & Arbuckle, Roy Rogers & Norton Buffalo, and Little Arthur Duncan. You'll be smiling at the end of the hour - another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
