¡No temáis!

There was a crippling blizzard in Iowa in April of 1973. Over a foot of snow fell, coupled with 50-70 mph winds. But, inside my dormitory at U of I, I was warmed by the eternal sunshine of Pentangle's evocation of the 12th century. The plangent voice of Jacqui McShee, accompanied by John Renbourn and Bert Jansch's jazz infused “baroque folk” sustained me throughout that challenging season. Not usually one to subscribe to any woo-woo, New Ageist practices, I nonetheless became convinced that I had lived before as a medieval troubadour - a sensation that recently resurfaced when I was introduced to the Witcher saga, because I strongly identified with Dandelion, that narrative's ironic balladeer. Ms. McShee was my gateway drug to the time-traveling vocal intoxications of Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, Maddy Prior, June Tabor, Sandy Denny, Kate Rusby, and others. A.L. Lloyd and Richard Thompson became my “spirit guides” through the library of Child ballads; a path which eventually led me back home to the USA via Alan Lomax and Pete Seeger. Song research became my professional passion and mission. Willy O Winsbury (Child 100), a traditional Scottish ballad, has many variations and possible derivations, one of which originates in the recounting of James V's courtship and marriage to Madeleine de Valois of France. In Pentangle's deft retelling, Willy and Janet's love triumphs over shame and death. You cannot ask for more than that.

Pod of the Gaps

Pod of the Gaps

Evangelicals are renowned for using crazy-sounding adjectives to highlight the outlandish nature of God's grace. This is often appropriate when speaking of God's love, but an overuse of such language potentially opens Christians up to progressive infiltration of the Gospel. Under the auspices of God's grace being so “outrageous” that it overcomes all prior categories, some professing “evangelicals” are now saying repentance is simply “optional” and that some sin is not actually sin, after all. Might this actually devalue the outrageousness of grace by undermining the power of the Incarnation and the Cross? Whilst relishing God's wonderful grace remains key, how do we stop this emphasis from condoning sin on our terms? As the UK faces severe weather warnings, there are still predictions that one in four people will not be able to afford their heating bills this year. More than 4,500 religious and community organisations have signed up to the Warm Welcome campaign, offering free, safe, warm spaces for the public. Yesterday Edge Ministries, one of those organisations, held a free Christmas fair and we hear from the organisers. In Iran, the first execution of a demonstrator has taken place. Mohsen Shekari was found guilty by a Revolutionary Court of "enmity against God", according to state media, and then hanged. Activists have described the proceedings as a "show trial without any due process". Protestors against the Iranian regime have been demonstrating since September after the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old woman who was held in custody by morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab - or headscarf - "improperly". But there's also now uncertainty over the status of this force, which enforces its dress code, after a senior official suggested that it had been disbanded If you've suffered a bereavement, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year. But a signposting charity is training hundreds of churches across the UK to offer support courses. AtaLoss, which was set up by Yvonne Tulloch when she lost her husband, has devised The Bereavement Journey course. We hear from Yvonne, and a trainer and a participant on a course in Southport in Merseyside, and get some advice on how to help the bereaved at this time of year. And we're following our exploration of the emotional power of your favourite carols. You may think you know the carol "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night", but think again ! Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Donald Rice of Poitin Band sent a couple thank yous: "Marc, Thanks so much for including our reel set on the upcoming show. Boatsmen starts with me playing clawhammer style banjo which takes a while to learn. Anyway, we appreciate being included on your wonderful podcast.  I listened today from Sicily where my wife and I are visiting some friends and their lovely cat, Thai. Slain" He also wrote: "Marc, Thanks for including the photo of Poitin Band and our Irish polka set on the Courting Tales episode of the podcast. That picture was taken last year at the Old Crossing Treaty Park in northern Minnesota where we played at the Chautauqua and French - Canadian/Metis Festival. It's a great multi - cultural festival and we are booked again for this annual event in late August 2022. We are so proud to be part of your great podcast." Shel O'Toole emailed: "Hi Marc, I shared a link to your podcast page with the whole network of Irish muso's in the greater Ballarat region of Victoria,  Australia.  I'm not sure how many members there are but definitely more than a few.  Hopefully you'll be getting more input from Australia soon. I'm a bit jealous you are in Scotland.  One of my grandmothers hails from Ayr.  I hope to get there one day and explore that fine country.  Meanwhile I'm loving the music from both Scotland and Ireland." Woodland Folk emailed some flower and foot photos. You can see what I'm talking about when you visit the shownotes. I also posted a photo from a run that I took on my most recent Celtic Invasion of Scotland. We ran around the Estate we were staying in. They had cleared the trees up there. So this is not the most dramatic of pictures. But it was a fun run.

Kate Rusby is one of the UK's leading folk singers. She joins Andrea Catherwood to talk about her latest album 30: Happy Returns. She's collaborated with musicians such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, K. T. Tunstall and Richard Hawley to sing new versions of her old songs and to celebrate thirty years of making music. The footballer Jake Daniels has come out as gay. He's the first current male professional footballer to do so, which shows you how unusual it is. So, is it harder to be yourself in the men's game compared to the women's? With us on Woman's Hour is the footballer Lianne Sanderson who's won 50 international caps for England and was the first professional female player to come out 12 years ago, and Dr Rachael Bullingham, who's a senior lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire and specialises in homophobia in women's sport. We speak to the BBC's Sarah Rainsford who's covering the war in Ukraine about the Wives of Azov. Their husbands are part of the Azov Regiment who are seen as heroes in Ukraine because they've been defending Mariupol, but they've been trapped for more than two months in a steel works. Overnight some of them managed to get out of there. Paula McGowan's autistic son died when because he was given anti-psychotic drugs, despite warnings from him and his family. His death was described as ‘avoidable'. Paula is now on the brink of achieving her goal which is that all health and social care staff must, by law, undergo mandatory training in autism and learning disability awareness. We speak to Paula, as well as Alexis Quinn, who's been involved in piloting the training.

Here We Come A Wassailing Acapella Choir with Lyrics of Traditional Christmas Carol sung by the US Army Band Chorus, verses 1 and 7 repeated. “Here We Come A-wassailing” (or “Here We Come A-caroling”) is a traditional English Christmas carol and New Year song, which was composed c. 1850. The term 'wassailing', refers to door to door carol singing wishing neighbors and residents good health. Good spirited householders would offer the singers a drink from their wassail bowl which would contain a warming concoction of beer, apples, spice and mead. The song has been recorded by range of performers including - The Ray Conniff singers, Perry Como and the Ray Charles Singers, The King's Singers, Harry Secombe, and Kate Rusby. And if you'd like something with the beat that's reet, then there's Sea Girls, Vieux Farka Touré & Julia Easterlin or even Illuminati Hotties. First off, thanks to everybody who's nipped over to https://www.patreon.com/blarneypilgrims and subscribed to the podcast. If you've not yet done it, and have been meaning to, there's never been a better time. Your reward will be great in heaven. And thanks. Now, this episode is a slight departure for us in that nobody mentions Planxty. Not once. And there's less of a strictly traditional Irish feel to this one. But basically we had a chance to record Bush Gothic at Portarlington, so we said ‘Yes please.' If you're not yet familiar with them, Bush Gothic reimagine traditional songs - from Australia, Ireland, England, wherever they find them - in the deepest sense of that word ‘reimagine.' What happens when that happens? Songs are suddenly visible in new light, with new contours and meanings evident. It's pretty amazing. You think about words you've heard maybe hundreds of times before in a whole new way. And as I mention in the intro to the episode, they leave space in their arrangements, so you can really hear the songs, the music, unfurl. So listen, with headphones if possible, cos this is seriously beautiful music. And here's some things to get you going after you're done listening: Darren mentions one of the band's films, which you can see here – their version of the (I think) English song, Jim Jones: https://bit.ly/2H3JUBP Then there's the toxic masculinity of Kenneth McKellar. (I know, right?) Here he is singing ‘The Wee Cooper of Fife', the song I referred to…nickety nackety noo… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcH0qtyvbQE …The Ould Triangle, as sung by Brendan Behan… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7red9Rw4450 …and following on from our chat about Burns, some thoughts on the great Scottish poet as a ‘Weinsteinian Sex Pest': https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2018/jan/24/robert-burns-was-the-beloved-poet-a-weinsteinian-sex-pest …and a suggestion that Veronica Forrest-Thomson might be a poet more worthy of your attention: https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2017/jan/25/burns-night-celebrates-the-wrong-scottish-poet-robert-burns So, why were we (me and my pals) celebrating Burns, as discussed in the episode? At the time I took shelter in the notion that what I felt we were celebrating was not Burns the man, with his qualities and his failings, but the idea of Burns. A man, a poet, a romantic and an espouser in verse of liberal ideals of the kind found in ‘A Man's A Man For A' That': Is there for honest Poverty That hings his head, an' a' that; The coward slave – we pass him by, We dare be poor for a' that! For a' that, an' a' that. Our toils obscure and a' that, The rank is but a guinea's stamp, The Man's the gowd for a' that… Then let us pray that come it may, (As come it will for a' that,) That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth, Shall bear the gree, an' a' that. For a' that, an' a' that, It's coming yet for a' that, That Man to Man, the world o'er, Shall brothers be for a' that. Sung, in an amazing, emotional moment, by Sheena Wellington at the official opening of the Scottish Parliament: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hudNoXsUj0o But maybe my explanation was a cop out, I'm not sure. Also, I've just realized, I fell in love with Burns's song Now Westlin' Winds, as recorded by Dick Gaughan, at the same time as I fell in love with a girl who didn't fall in love with me. If you're looking for the poem from which the song derives, it's called Song Composed in August, and it's gorgeous: http://www.robertburns.org/works/31.shtml Check out that nature imagery ya bas. Here's Dick Gaughan's version: https://bit.ly/2H5cK4L So I'm sure my unrequited teenage love had something to do with something. And, finally, you can't ignore the fact that if nothing else, Burns Night is a great excuse for a massive, ceremonial piss-up in the middle of winter. So there's that. And then there's the English band The Unthanks: http://www.the-unthanks.com/about/ I first came across their music through their…what…heart-stopping version of the King Of Rome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fL3E8FRxiw …which sends shivers through me every time I hear it, and puts me in mind of both Elbow, and Kate Rusby's ‘My Young Man,' which is also completely heart-stopping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AjblYI9KEY And finally, Darren references Turkey In The Straw and the debate that comes and goes in the Old Time world, I suspect, about whether it's possible to unweave a melody from the words it has traditionally been attached to. This is the NPR feature on the song's origins: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2014/05/11/310708342/recall-that-ice-cream-truck-song-we-have-unpleasant-news-for-you?t=1565685084013 I wonder too, as Jenny says, if there are some songs, melodies – whatever – that we should just bury once and for all, because they're so damaging. Which, when all's said and done, seems fine to me. Jenny M Thomas, Dan Witton and Chris Lewis, thanks again. Bush Gothic's live filming is happening on Monday September 2nd at the Retreat Hotel in Abbotsford. You can get tickets here: https://www.facebook.com/events/the-retreat-hotel-abbotsford/music-clip-filming-concert-bush-gothic/898136590560546/ And you can get hold of their albums at their bandcamp page: https://bushgothic.bandcamp.com/ ... We discuss finding inspiration for storytelling Changeling in queer and minority life, the slow death of the soul of being a minority in a mainstream professional space, the recursive loop of playing queer characters in Changeling, and how Simon might be an unseleighe boggan who ravages his coworkers. As this is a minority topic, we sometimes slip into slightly arcane langauge. If you find yourself confused with some of the terms being used, you may wish to listen to the minisode preceeding this conversation: Defining Terms for Queer Themes. People have been singing about the mountains for generations. In recent years, the voices singing them have taken on a special urgency with the advent of mountain top removal. The landscape of Appalachia is changing with the times - and so are the songs. In the spirit of this music WoodSongs will tape two broadcasts in one evening on Monday, March 14 at the historic Lexington Opera House featuring an array of artists singing the music of coal country and Appalachia. Michael Johnathon conceived of the broadcast theme after watching a public television broadcast of “Coal Country, a film about the Appalachian mountains by the award winning team of Mari-Lynn Evans and Jordan Freeman. EMMYLOU HARRIS began her career singing with the legendary Gram Parson. A member of the Grand Ole Opry, her career has produced huge hits including "Two More Bottles of Wine," and "To Know Him Is to Love Him" from her Grammy winning album with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, Trio. DARRELL SCOTT is one of Kentucky's most powerful songwriters. Scott has collaborated with Steve Earle, Sam Bush, Emmylou Harris, John Cowan, Verlon Thompson, Guy Clark, Tim O'Brien, Kate Rusby, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many others. Darrell will perform his deeply moving mountain ballad, “Youll Never Leave Harlan Alive. JOHN ADAMS co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington DC. In February 2011, Adams received the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- our nation's highest civilian honor -- from President Obama, who referenced Rolling Stone Magazine's description of Adams when announcing the award: "If the planet has a lawyer, it's John Adams. In 2010, Adams and his wife Patricia co-authored “A Force for Nature, a memoir recounting their forty years of battles and victories with NRDC. He has also served on governmental advisory committees, including President Clinton's Council for Sustainable Development. Patricia Adams is a writer and teacher who has partnered with her husband for many years in environmental activism. They live in the Catskill mountains of NY in a rambling country house that is over 150 years old. s.
