EPISODE 132: A soulful and distinctive singer, talented keyboardist and songwriter, T Bear (Richard T Bear) made his mark as a solo artist and collaborator with many iconic artists—Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Blues Brothers, Richie Havens, Cher, Paul Shaffer, to name a few. In 1978, T Bear signed with RCA Records and released Red, Hot & Blue that featured Les Dudek, Billy Squier, and the Brecker Brothers. He has shared the stage with Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers and Jeff Beck. Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety, which he did in 1983, forced him to put his music career on hold. He became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors, which led to the creation of Musicians Assistance Program, now part of MusiCares Foundation. T Bear credits his late wife for encouraging his comeback. After a self-imposed hiatus from the music industry that lasted nearly three decades, T Bear, aka Richard T Bear, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, returns with a new album, Fresh Bear Tracks, released on Quarto Valley Records. A blend of blues, soul and rock with a who's who of special guests including Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Tom Scott, Walter Trout, Hutch Hutchinson, Laurence Juber, and more. Produced by Grammy Award winner Tony Braunagel, Fresh Bear Tracks was recorded at Robby Krieger's studio in Los Angeles. instagram.com/richard_tbearContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! TSORR Radio Show S7E50 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 12 Dec 2024. The theme of the show was moving on. TSORR's days of broadcasting from the wastelands of ANC-run Johannesburg are drawing to a close, and once the relocation is complete in January, we have huge plans for 2025. There is something for everyone here: rock, metal, ballads, and blues, and as always, it's all about the guitars. On the Twisted Triplets, we had three tracks called ‘Move On'. The three contributing artists were Paul Stanley, Walter Trout, and David Bowie. In the Evolution of Judas Priest, we are at a high point. It's 1980, and this is Priest's evolutionary high point—their fish moves onto land moment - British Steel. The Immortals slot went to White Buffalo and the Forest Rangers and a track off the Sons of Anarchy called ‘Come Join the Murder'. In the final episode of Season 2, Charles welcomes Jim Turbert, an American communication technologist and podcaster residing in Rotterdam. Jim reflects on his first concert at age 13, where Ringo Starr's performance left a lasting impression, partly thanks to his music-loving uncle who influenced his musical tastes. He recounts various memorable concerts, including a powerful Afghan Wigs show in Boston, where lead singer Greg Dooley's storytelling made the performance unforgettable, even despite later learning Dooley's on-stage declaration of being on acid was untrue.Jim shares his appreciation for technically proficient artists like Mike Watt and Nels Cline, recounting a particularly electrifying performance that displayed exceptional guitar skills. His experiences underscore the importance of venue acoustics and crowd energy, such as how silence and attention at a Sigur Rós concert added to the immersive quality of the show. Conversely, he describes a disappointing Eagles concert during their 'When Hell Freezes Over' tour due to multiple breaks and inflated egos.A standout anecdote involves Jim losing a shoe while crowd-surfing at a Nirvana concert, only to have Kurt Cobain toss it backstage, leaving him to navigate the chilly New England night unshod. Amid these personal stories, Jim also touches on the broader implications of concert experiences, including nostalgic reflections on hitchhiking back from a Sonic Youth concert with friends and the pure joy of witnessing an early White Stripes performance in a frat house setting. In addition to sharing concert stories, Jim speaks about his podcast, 'Feel Free to Deviate,' which delves into people's career paths and their relationships with success. The podcast captures various personal and professional journeys, underscoring Jim's curiosity and communication skills.BANDS: Afghan Wigs, Aerosmith, Beatles, Black Crows, Blackfoot, Breeders, Clarence Clemens, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Dr. John, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Led Zeppelin, Living Color, Lounge Acts, Mason Ruffner, Ministry, Minutemen, Nazareth, Nick Cave, Nils Lofgren, Otoboke Beaver, Porno for Pyros, Radiohead, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Sigur Rós, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sonic Youth, Ten Years After, the Doors, U2, Walter Trout, White Stripes, Willie Preston.VENUES: T. Born in New York City and raised in the Caribbean as Richard Gerstein - Richard T. Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of acclaimed solo albums and collaborations with a number of influential icons, including Al Kooper, Stephen Stills, former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, Kiss, Pat Benatar and many more. He has shared stages with artists such as Dave Mason, Mick Fleetwood, the Doobie Brothers, Richie Havens and Odetta. T. Bear penned "Love and Pain," a track found on Take Me Home, one of Cher's most successful albums and also tallied several hits on his own, including the single "Sunshine Hotel" from his debut album Red, Hot and Blue. He has appeared on a number of recordings including CSN's Southern Cross, Billy Squier's Tale of the Tape and The Blues Brothers Soundtrack album. After taking some time to focus on his own sobriety, T. Bear became an early activist helping others with addiction. His self-imposed hiatus lasted nearly three decades, and now T Bear is back with two striking new releases, Fresh Bear Tracks and The Way of the World, his first studio albums in 25+ years. Richard is a distinctive singer and talented keyboard player. His latest albums feature a host of special guests. From Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, to former Paul McCartney & Wings members Laurence Juber and Denny Seiwell and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench. His latest album, The Way of The World, was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. It boasts a stunning set of 13 original songs. Musically, it's a stirring melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots. T. Bear's first album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to #4 on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. Richard has appeared on numerous recordings by iconic artists including Crosby, Stills and Nash's Southern Cross, The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single My Angel Baby. As a soloist T Bear found his initial inspiration in the sounds of the British Invasion. At age 13 he was writing his own songs. An early break came when he was working at Manny's Music in New York City when Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady stopped in and hear him improvising on piano. They were impressed enough to ask him to sit in with them during a Hot Tuna show at the famed Fillmore East. He worked for a time as Carly Simon's road manager and opened shows for the likes of Jeff Beck and Richie Havens before moving to Los Angeles. In 1983, he took a lengthy hiatus from making music to get his personal life in order before returning to action in 2017. Fast forward to the present and T Bear is so excited about the new album. As he puts it, “Making The Way of the World was like getting a new pair of glasses. I see everything more clearly and in focus around me. These are songs that made me think and dream. It's an oasis for the mind.” Meet Richard T Bear this week as he unravels his incredible story of survival and comeback against all odds. I hope you really enjoy this episode.
My guest this week is mastering engineer Maor Applebaum, who's worked with the likes of Faith No More, Yes, Meatloaf, Eric Gales, Walter Trout, Dream Theater, Sepultura, Halford, and many more. Maor has written presets and collaborated with various plugin companies such as Waves, Brainworx/Plugin Alliance, Softube, Arturia, Leapwing Audio, Pulsar Audio and others. He's also guested and lectured at various trade shows and recording schools, and is co-creator of the THE OVEN line of analog hardware which is modeled and emulated by Brainworx. During our interview, Maor spoke about the different mastering requirements for different genres, common mixing problems that he sees, what he asks clients to supply for mastering, the audio gear he's developed, and so much more. I spoke with Maor via zoom from his studio outside of Los Angeles. On the intro we look at song melodies getting simpler and production more complex, and the quietest places in the U.S.

This episode of Big Blend Radio features T Bear, a distinctive singer, talented keyboard player, and songwriter, who discusses his music, touring, and latest solo album "The Way of the World" that's out now through Quarto Valley Records. T Bear has made his mark as a solo performer and collaborator with many iconic artists — Crosby Stills and Nash, The Blues Brothers, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Edgar Winter, Billy Squier, Cher, as well as Gene Simmons and Peter Criss of Kiss, to name just a few, while also releasing several noteworthy solo albums over the years. Most recently he has been touring the world with acclaimed blues guitarist Walter Trout as a member of Walter's band. T Bear's album "The Way of The World," was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. Produced by long-time Grammy®-winning collaborators drummer Tony Braunagel (who has performed, toured, and recorded with a host of big names over the years including Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, BB King and many many others) and former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber, the horn-driven excursions of his previous album, "Fresh Bear Tracks," were stripped-down to a small group sound, recorded mostly in home studio environments. Augmenting this core trio was a selection of bass players, including the legendary Reggie McBride, Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt) and John Mayall-alumnus Ricky Cortez. The Way of The World boasts a stunning set of twelve original songs, written and/or co-written by T Bear. Musically, the album is a stirring and infectious melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots music accented by some occasional touches of tasty soul, jazz, Latin, and funk textures. Walter Trout is an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter and probably the best performer I have ever seen play live. Walter's backstory is a page-turner you won't want to put down. Five decades in the making; it is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by years in the wilderness and massive narcotic binges. He has been a gunslinger in bands from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers to Canned Heat, and is now enjoying a solo career that's taking him to new heights. New Jersey born, Walter emerged as a luminary in the blues music landscape early on when his fascination with the guitar was sparked at a tender age. He showcased remarkable talent, performing in local bands before moving to Los Angeles in pursuit of a thriving music career. Walter's breakthrough came when he joined the iconic blues-rock band Canned Heat in the '80s, propelling him into the limelight. Subsequently, his solo career skyrocketed, marked by the release of his debut album "Life in the Jungle" in 1990. Known for his fiery guitar solos and soul-stirring performances, Trout's discography boasts numerous chart-topping albums, including "Blues for the Modern Daze" and "Battle Scars," showcasing his prowess and deep connection with blues music. Beyond musical success, Walter faced life-threatening health issues, culminating in a liver transplant. His triumphant return to music inspired fans worldwide, symbolising his resilience and unwavering spirit. Throughout his journey, Walter Trout's influence on blues music remains profound. His electrifying live shows and dedication to preserving the essence of blues have solidified his legacy as a guitar virtuoso and a living legend. His enduring impact continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences globally, and his story has to been heard to be believed. Walter Trout joins us this week on A Breath of Fresh Air to share that story and some of his incredible music. To learn more about Walter, head for his website https://www.waltertrout.com/ With comments, feedback or suggestions for future guests, send me a message through my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy Walter Trout's life story.

Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout. Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. The band was 'augmented' on the recording by Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales and Chris Duarte. Supersonic Blues Machine had its worldwide debut concert at the Holland International Blues Festival on June 4, 2016, in Grolloo, the Netherlands. The rigors of touring and the lifestyle caught up with Lopez around this time. Lopez stated "My own personal struggles were overcoming alcoholism, drug addiction and to start eating healthier, lose weight and exercise... I struggled for years drinking and drugging and eating badly while I was drinking... I became very overweight". Once recovered, Lopez noted about performing, "That still doesn't mean every night is perfect... but at least I can walk away and say I did the best I could and I was sober doing it". His next release was Live in NYC (2016), which was issued on Cleopatra Records and produced by Paul Nelson. The recording come out of Lopez attending, and performing at, the 70th birthday party for Johnny Winter. Lopez signed with the Mascot Label Group in November 2017, and his debut album on their Provogue Records imprint was Tell the Truth, which was released on March 2, 2018.It was produced by Fabrizio Grossi, and featured Jimmy Zavala. This week we are discussing what the interweb calls the New Wave Of Classic Rock! There have been bands doing the retro-rock thing for years, but this phenomenon seems to be gaining momentum lately and we decided to focus on new-ish bands that have released albums in the last year or so. Indeed, rock n' roll is not dead and is in the very capable hands of these killer new classics! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. The younger generation is picking up guitars and playing that classic blues-inspired hard rock again! This retro rock thing is not quite as new as the interweb is making it out to be, but who cares? It's a breath of freshly regurgitated air!Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Rival Sons - “Guillotine” from DARKFIGHTER (2023)Classless Act - “This Is For You (w/ Justin Hawkins)” from Welcome To The Show (2022)Thunderpussy - “Firebreather” from Firebreather - single (2023)The Cold Stares - “Nothing But The Blues” from Voices (2023)Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown - “Burnin'” from Dirty Work EP (2023)Donna Cannone - “Pushed” from Donna Cannone (2022)Jared James Nichols - “Skin ‘n Bone” from Jared James Nichols (2023)Crown Lands - “Dreamer Of The Dawn” from Fearless (2023)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
Reigning from southern California, Robert Jon & The Wreck take the southern rock sound from the east coast and make it their own. Since their inception in 2011, these four native Californians; Robert Jon Burrison (lead vocals, guitar), Andrew Espantman (drums, background vocals), Henry Schneekluth (lead guitar, background vocals), and Warren Murrel (bass) have been electrifying audiences all over the world with their soaring guitar leads, rich vocal harmonies, and memorable tunes. Fueled by this success, RJTW took the road again delivering fierce performances, emblazoned with commitment, and dripping in a rawness that's impossible to fake. Simply put, it is difficult to ignore when these talented musicians take the stage. Little wonder they have made an impact on audiences across the world, where they've played a run of sold-out shows and proudly shared bills with talent the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, and Rival Sons. The Wreck found their flow with yearly tours, returning to California and prolifically releasing new music. 2021's studio album Shine A Light On Me Brother gained worldwide acclaim. They teamed up with Joe Bonamassa's independent label and released two singles in early 2022 with “Waiting For Your Man” and “She's A Fighter.”Discover more about Robert Jon and the Wreck by watching their exclusive interview with The Trout.https://robertjonandthewreck.com/https://www.thetroutshow.com/Thanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/
George introduces Bittersweethearts to the world in a very cool introductory interview. Los Angeles based indie-rockers Bittersweethearts release their dreamy and heart-wrenching third single ‘Run From You'. The enchanting front lady Zoe Infante openly offers, “It symbolizes change and yearning for something new, while feeling stuck in the past. It also represents the feeling of being lost in a toxic relationship and not knowing if you want to stay or leave.”Penned and recorded at Strawhorse Studios California and engineered by Thomas Ross Johansen (Wheatus, Snoop Dog, Walter Trout, Bruno Mars), Thomas added keys to the song with Zach Andrews on bass, Declan O'Raidy guitar/producer and Marc Slutsky provided drums. “While recording we were experimenting with a lot of different guitar tones to achieve a more dreamy vibe, which contrasts the rocky feel of our last single.” Being known for striking imagery, the song is paired with a haunting and ethereal video shot by Vicente Cordero of Industrial Films (Richie Kotzen, Mr Big, Winery Dogs). “I definitely took inspiration from my recent divorce for not only the song, but the video and how tough it was to let go of someone I had made up a fantasy life about.” Zoe goes on, “When I was a little girl, I thought the most romantic gesture would be a photo in a locket, so my favorite lyric from the song has to be, “I want our faces/around my neck/inside a locket”…There's a funeral scene and a wedding scene. I wanted to portray the death of a past life, as well as the rebirth of a new one.”Embodying Tarantino-esque rock vibes, an air of Blondie mixing a cocktail with Mazzy Star in a back alley behind CBGB's in Manhattan's East Village, they have returned to US shores after a January European tour and debut UK show at a renowned haunt for fiery new bands, Fiddlers Elbow Camden to fantastic receptions.Swiftly gaining new fans from their tour in addition to playing legendary venues in Whisky A Go Go, The Viper Room and The Mint on the California coast, the single is another taste of Bittersweethearts with more to come later this year.#music #musicinterviews #mmfcpodcast

His granddaughter refers to him as the Justin Bieber of the 60s. And for very good reason. He was the king of Bubblegum music, and hugely popular the world over. But TOMMY ROE didn't set out to father a whole new genre of music. He actually managed to cut some pretty decent rockers along the way too. In this week's episode Tommy tells us how he got into music in the first place, what drove him to write his first song, Sheila, as a young teenager and how he still laments the fact that the girl he wrote that song about, never knew of its existence. Tommy says he'd love to find her today, some 60 years later. Maybe you could help? Tommy also tells us about how he had to compete with the British Invasion and had to come up with catchy tunes that he knew would sell. Hence of all his other hits. At first, he resented being the king of the kids but grew to embrace it as other musicians began to copy his sound. Up next, you probably remember PETER NOONE as the lead singer and founder of that 60s English band, Herman's Hermits, but Peter is also an accomplished TV and stage actor. To my greatest surprise, Peter turned out to be one of the funniest and most uplifting guys I've had the pleasure of speaking with. I caught up with him just ahead of his 75th birthday and giggled my way through this chat. Peter jokes about how getting older has its perks. He also talks about how his band became famous, how the name came about, and about meeting Elvis. Peter talks about being 15 when he founded Herman's Hermits, at a time when so many English bands were coming up around him and what it was like in Liverpool at that time. He also tells us about what fame and fortune did to the young lads in 1965 when Herman's Hermits outsold every other band in the world. Iconic blues rock guitarist WALTER TROUT knows better than most, that no matter how fast or far a man travels, he can never truly outrun his past. Walter joins us to chat about his experience with a liver transplant, and how the life changing event affected his music. He says he can't believe he's still here because he had been in hospital eight months with brain damage. He lost 120 pounds, didn't recognise his wife or children, lost the ability to speak, and didn't have a bite of solid food for six months. Walter had to have speech therapy and re-learn how to talk. He had to re-learn how to walk but the worst for him was that he didn't know how to play the guitar anymore. He had to start over again from scratch and teach himself how to play chords and how to play scales and how to bend a note. He worked on it seven hours a day, every day for a year until he finally performed again two years later. Walter also regales us with the story of how he met his wife whilst on stage and despite his rocky start, says his life today is like a fairy tale. Walter starts off the interview with one of the greatest cofessions we have ever had. It's an exclusive story that he has never told to the general public. Followed by many wonderful stories about his love of his family to some of the great artists and bands he has pllayed with. If you aren't yet a Walter Trout fan, listen to the interivew and check out his new album and we promise you won't walk away disapointed!
In the next hour of The Roadhouse, we do what we know best. Son of Dave, Junior Wells, Dr. John, Walter Trout, and Trudy Lynn are all just waiting for a chance to make you move, or to move you. All in all, it just feels like a cloak of familiarity - the familiarity of another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Hey Guys,In today's episode I talk to trailer music and video game composer Sigurd Jøhnk-Jensen.A few months ago he reached out to me on Instagram to tell me about his journey. I was so inspired by Sigurd's story that I had to get him on the show. Sigurd is a composer and live musician. Having toured Europe multiple times most recently with Blindstone and Walter Trout. Music composition credits mainly in video games and trailers include; Killing Floor, Marvels Eternals House Of Gucci, Scream and many more. This episode was such a joy to record. Sigurd has a very wise head on his shoulders and delivers some absolute gems when it comes to your mental health and balancing your work with your life.I came away from this interview wanting to be more kind to myself and I think you will too.
