Emilija Kokić, Riva, Rock Me, WINNER Yugoslavia 1989 (27:23), Jackie Cox (47:08)       This is the second episode in our two part series about Celine Dion! We pick up right after Celine's Eurovision victory, tracing her rise to global pop stardom, her experience of critical backlash, her health struggles and her recent comeback. As we do so, we discuss the parallels between Celine's ebb and flow of cultural relevance, and that of the contest that launched her.          Then we speak to Emilija Kokić, who won Eurovision the year after Celine for Yugoslavia, as the front woman of Riva, with the song Rock Me. We discuss that incredible moment in the late '80s when it felt like the world was opening up, and the difficult aftermath as Emilija launched her solo career against the back drop of war, genocide and the break-up of Yugoslavia.         Finally, we sit down with Jackie Cox (RuPaul's Drag Race Season 12), and explore Canadian acts at Eurovision, in a game of Tops and Bottoms that we're calling the "Not Like Us" edition. We cover everything from the code switching Canadians are often forced to do on the international stage, to the threat the country now faces from Donald Trump.         TOPS AND BOTTOMS: NOT LIKE US EDITION       Sherisse Laurence, L'amour de ma vie (Luxembourg, 1986):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTyzJSnLv3Q       Celine Dion, Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi (Switzerland 1988): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXLWfXmlXPc       Annie Cotton, Moi, tout simplement, (Switzerland, 1993): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QG-kvD7GHo       Natasha St-Pier, Je N'ai Que Mon Âme, (France, 2001): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCfqvkCEyy4       Rykka, The Last of Our Kind, (Switzerland, 2016): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96ENe3EYBE0       La Zarra, Evidement, (France, 2023): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWfbEFH9NvQ

Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's.  We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different.  However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge.  Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall.  Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it.   So, what's new? Another fun episode.  Enjoy.  References:  Rolling Stone magazine, 80's, Coldplay, ‘Moon Music', No 1 album, Sean Diddy Coombs, Puff Daddy, Diddy, Cassie Ventura, Beatlemania, Beatles '64, David Tedeschi, Disney+, The Fall, The Nations Saving Grace, John Leckie, Mark E Smith, Can, German, krautrock, Damo Suzuki, DoubleJay, TripleJ, Prince, ‘Kiss', Madonna, ‘Like a Prayer', Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, ‘The Message', Michael Jackson, ‘Billie Jean', Public Enemy, ‘Bring the Noise', Whitney Houston, ‘How Will I Know?”, The Go-Gos, ‘Our Lips Are Sealed', Duran Duran, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf', Kate Bush, ‘Running Up That Hill', The Smiths, ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out', Husker Du, Minutemen, rap artists, Bowie, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, Clash, Neneh Cherry, U2, Joy Division, AC/DC, “Hell's Bells”, INXS, “Never Tear Us Apart”, Apple music streaming, Leonard Cohen, Tower of Song, Sisters of Mercy, “This Corrosion”, “Floodland”, Jim Steinman, “New Big Prinz”, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax", Cher, “If I Could Turn Back Time”, Missouri, Bow Wow Wow, “I Want Candy”, Haysi Fantaysee, “Shiny Shiny”, Countdown, Falco, “Rock Me, Amadeus”, A-Ha, “Take on me”, Nena,  99 Luftballon, Kim Carnes, “Bette Davis Eyes”, Shriekback, “Nemesis", parthenogenesis, Samantha Fox, Africa, Toto  Playlist – Episode This is our usual playlist, where we curate a list to play what we've talked about in the episode Playlist – Spotify's complete list  Africa – Mass band  Samantha Fox web site – purely for academic interest!

In 1974, The Rolling Stones were once again searching for their identity. After hugely successful tours in 1972 and 1973 thanks to the overwhelming critical and commercial success of 1972's Exile on Main Street, the band were mired in problems of their own making. Mick Jagger was bothered by wife (and now mother of his child Jade) Bianca trying to tame him from his lothario lifestyle. Keith Richards was diving deeper into his heroin addiction. Mick Taylor was becoming disillusioned with his role in the band as he was contributing and writing songs but never given credit (or royalties). 1973's Goats Head Soup is a fan favorite but was derided by critics for not being as good as Exile. Apparently the Stones were going to a half live, half covers album that eventually gave way to more interesting original materlal (Ain't Too Proud To Beg still made the album and was the 2nd single). Disenchanted with married life, being hounded by press and law enforcement helped create It's Only Rock N Roll - an ode to their lives as huge stars in the public eye. The title track is a classic both for the name and the story of Mick wondering what is enough for the fans and press. They come strong with killer Keith riffs (If You Can't Rock Me, Dance Little Sister), dirty roadhouse rockers (Short And Curlies) and forays into reggae, country, gospel and soul with the usual R&B sensibilities that make the Stones the Stones. Of course, we were a bit put off that there is no Keith song on the album (the last time that would happen) but you know he had something to do with Fingerprint File, a song about running from the FBI and all manner of police. With Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston lending their talents on the keys, Ronnie Wood and David Bowie making brief appearances and the boys experimenting a bit, this ends up being a fun Stones record to explore. It might not be chock full of radio hits but get to see the Stones going down paths they don't always go with surprising delight. Not the best or worst of the Mick Taylor era and one we're glad we researched and heard. Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! “Let me make the songs of a nation,” the Scottish patriot Andrew Fletcher once declared, “and I care not who makes its laws.” The eminent political journalist Ronald Brownstein makes a similar case in his recent book Rock Me on the Water — 1974: The Year Los Angeles Transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics. Brownstein's narrative history traces the spectacular cultural pinnacles achieved in Los Angeles in 1974 in the separate industries of movies, music, and television — though often the artists responsible for those breakthroughs were working only blocks apart. These achievements helped Los Angeles in that year to exert “more influence over popular culture than any other city in America,” according to Brownstein, and indeed “the city dominated popular culture more than it ever had before, or would again.” Ultimately the breakthroughs that took place in LA in 1974 would not only transform the culture industries, they would act as a conduit channeling the radical ideas of the 1960s into the American mainstream. In this podcast interview, CNN senior political analyst and Atlantic senior editor Brownstein discusses the creative summits achieved in LA in 1974. In Hollywood, these included the release of “New Wave” masterpieces such as Chinatown, The Godfather Part II, and The Conversation, along with the filming of other notable works including Nashville and Jaws. On television, 1974 was the only year that CBS broadcast the Saturday night lineup often considered “the greatest night in television history,” which included such breakthrough series as All in the Family, MASH, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Bob Newhart Show. And in music, 1974 saw the release of career-defining albums from principal creators of the Southern California sound including Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The art across all these industries, according to Brownstein, “was socially engaged, grappling with all the changes and critiques of American life that had rumbled through society during the 1960s: greater suspicion of authority in business and government, more assertive roles for women, more tolerance of premarital sex, greater acceptance of racial and sexual minorities.” LA's culture industries in 1974 were at the forefront of the clash between an ascending Baby Boom generation bent on change and older generations opposing that change. In the short term, conservative politics triumphed. But Brownstein argues that the clear lesson for today's political-cultural clash of generations is that “while voices resistant to change may win delaying battles in politics, they cannot indefinitely hold back the future.”

In this episode, he explains what he's found and how it is, at least, partially responsible for the movement after so many years.Ron sticks around to help us understand how the January 6th Hearings are playing. We're taking a look at recent polling, the ratings, and how it's all being covered in the media. Will the hearings, no matter how compelling the evidence presented that Donald Trump effectively led an attempted coup, change any minds or make any difference in the November midterms? Lee and Ron compare notes on that one. Finally, we figured since we had him on the show, we might as well go all-Brownstein and talk to Ron about his new New York Times bestseller, Rock Me on the Water: 1974-The Year Los Angeles Transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics. It's all about how the pop culture of 1970s L.A. both predicted, and beat, the political movements of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Plus, there's a fun story about the Beatles missing a big gig.

Thursday on Political Rewind: Los Angeles in the early 1970s was a glittering confluence of creative genius, which transformed American society as we know it. Music stars like Joni Mitchell and The Eagles co-existed in the same space as television's Mary Tyler Moore and movie master Roman Polanski. It was an era that gave us All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and Chinatown. Journalist and cultural historian Ronald Brownstein documents this lively history in his new book, "Rock Me on the Water: 1974 — The Year Los Angeles Transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics." We speak with Brownstein about how 1974 would change the face of popular culture forever — and create works far ahead of the political status quo of the time.
