The lovely legends behind @onorecordsperth join forces under their Ernest & Young alter egos to shower us in killer house grooves. Q. Hey mates, tell us what's the latest with your label / mix series / party service ONO Records? A. Sup! We've been working away for the last couple of months on putting out some records after the summer party period here out west. We should have at least two records coming out this year, one is finished, it's just going through the production process currently. Pretty proud of that one and keen to see it come out, we think it's quite different to what people may expect from the label considering our previous output. Other than putting out records, planning a couple larger scale parties towards the later stages of the year which we're also quite excited about. Some solo parties and some collaborations with some great homies! Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together? Is there a sound, feeling, or time in dance music history that connects all the different elements in one way or another? A. We wanted to create a mix that has the ‘live' feeling, a representation of what we might play in a party setting. We don't spend much collaborative time planning sets or mixes meticulously, we prefer to show each other a couple of records we think would be good for the setting and bounce off each other after that. We did that with this mix, pulled out some new records and some old favourites and had fun with it. That might speak to our influences though, we always seem to gravitate towards sets or DJs that have a more rough and raw approach or feeling. Musically we seem to enjoy that sweet spot with dance music where records are not specifically one thing, it's not quite house and it's not quite techno and maybe there's some dubby elements to it. So maybe there's a musical feeling there that connects it all but we've never really been able to describe what that is. Q. Are there any records in the mix that are especially close to your hearts, or old favourites that you've been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? A. (Warwick): Quite a few favourites in there for me, one that sticks out is probably the Mood II Swing record. When we launched the label a couple of years ago we did a warehouse party collaborating with some great friends of ours, the System: crew. It was a really special night for us, being the launch party of the label, but also to be able to do it with them. They've always been such big supporters of us, have taught us a lot and are irreplaceable assets to the community here, big love 2 u Kyle, Cheye, Ben and Alex! But at that party another good friend who we have drawn a lot of inspiration from over the years played the tune, which was one of those spesh party moments for me. It has now become one of those records that reminds me of great times and great friends. A. (James): The mix is basically a big collection of my favourites, both at the moment and all time! But if I had to choose one it would probably be The Kings of Tomorrow record played around 30 minutes into the mix (Fade II Black the Roger S Blackout Mix being the track in question). I picked it up at a great Record Fair that happens here at Bowls Clubs around the city every month or two and it's a favourite to play out ever since. It's dubby, soulful, tense, psychedelic and it's got a killer groove. The track has this great tension that creates a really special dancefloor moment every time I play it out and about, so it felt fitting to include it in our mix here and try to capture that feeling! We're super grateful to be able to contribute to one of our favourite mix series, the institution that is MDC! And I just wanted to add a shout out to everyone in the community here in Boorloo, we're so proud and privileged to be a part of this community whose love and support is an endless source of inspiration and motivation.

May is a birthday double header in the Haynes house. This year it's a special one as my eldest turns 16 allowing him to drive!! I'm so proud of the young man he's becoming. He really is a chip off the old block, so much so that he has just gotten into vinyl and is now showing interest in DJing and production. He even joined me in the music closet for this weeks show to see how it all works! The mix cover is AI generated pics of Bailey as a wee baby. The other birthday is mine as I head towards the mid century award. We come back to the present but in the same vibe building slowly across the first hour.The second hour has much more urgency about it with more of a UK garage flava, The intensity continues to build until we get to a mental track by DJ Dove. I can't stop singing "Bussit" and I've only had it just over 24hrs. The mix signs off with another track paying homage to the past. This time it's Mood II Swing's "Do It Your Way" being honoured. A track that I can still remember hearing for the first time back in the UK in 02, some six years after it's initial release.I always do my mixes on the fly with new barely heard tracks these days. It creates a real adrenalin rush because I just don't know if the next track will keep the mix heading in the right direction. I am hearing the mix and the tunes for the first time like everyone else listening. It often makes me worry that this is the month I'm not able to put out a mix out I'm happy with, and this month I had little faith until maybe 20 minutes in. In the end I had nothing to worry about. By the end of the show I knew I had a great little mix, but after hearing it back a couple of times I feel really proud. I've done this so many times now I almost take it for granted which would be wrong. Louie Vega shouldn't need an introduction, but we'll do it anyways. The Bronx-born Puerto Rican artist embodies the soulful sound of New York house music, and he's been doing it since the '80s. His history features a litany of legendary names and clubs, from the Devil's Nest to his much-vaunted residency at The Sound Factory in Manhattan, and he's made music with the likes of Todd Terry, Mood II Swing and Barbara Tucker. But it's with Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez that Vega made his most cherished and influential work as the duo Masters Of Work, putting out huge singles and making house remixes for some of the most iconic names in '90s pop music. To listen Vega's discography, especially as part of Masters At Work, is to hear the evolution of house music and garage (yes, both US and UK). It's difficult to overstate the impact those '90s records had on New York and beyond, and they're still some of the most swinging, undeniable house records ever made. House music has been Vega's lifelong mission, and almost four decades in, he's still refining his craft, moving towards ever-jazzier, ever more soulful sounds. Lem Springsteen is part of the house music duo Mood II Swing based in New York City. Lem is a song writer, music producer and recently completed an international DJ tour from 2016 to 2018. Mood II Swing became one of the most in-demand remixers in the late ‘90s, with remixes of Ultra Naté's "Free" that struck gold. Their impact extended beyond New York's house scene to techno and UK garage clubs. Mood II Swing worked closely with Louie Vega throughout the ‘90s and between 1994 and 1996, they released close to 100 tracks, including remixes and collaborative works. Throughout this period, dedicating 100% of their time to the studio, with standout tracks including “Do It Your Way", "All Night Long,", "Ohh" and "Move Me". After over 25 years' of making tracks, Lem is on a new path curating his own album which is soon to be released in January 2021. Lem and I break down his music career and the origins of house music in the ‘80s and ‘90s in New York. In a laidback conversation, we discuss some of the influences in his style of production throughout the years. Taking a look at his most recent tour, some of the highlights along the way and setbacks which he has learned from. Lastly, we take a look at the future of the music industry in an era where COVID-19 is reshaping the nightclub scene.
