Blues is the Truth #804 We are straight back to business this week with a massive stack of tunes that needs absolutely no introduction. No requests, no fluff, just two full hours of pure, unadulterated groove from some of the best to ever do it. We are setting the mood early with the legendary Taj Mahal and the hypnotic blues-rock vibe of Medicine Head, before dipping into some classic vocal harmony from The 5 Royales. The temperature rises quickly from there with The Cashbox Kings, Blues Messenger, and the searing guitar work of Tinsley Ellis. For the deep, historic roots, we've got the delta giant Bukka White in the building, alongside a brilliant collaboration from Carl Carlton and Melanie Wiegmann, and the godfather himself, John Mayall. We are keeping that classic energy high with soulful runs from Curtis Salgado, the king Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the vintage jazz-blues vocals of Helen Humes. The second half is a masterclass in harmonica-driven heat and modern grit. You will hear Russ Green, The Four Flames, and the swampy fire of Ghalia and Mama's Boys, right alongside KAT Blue and the True Believers. We've also locked in the powerhouse pairing of the Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling, Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames, and the brilliant Dave Thomas. Rounding off an absolute powerhouse of a show, we are clearing the runway for Freddie King, the gritty rock-blues of Mississippi Shakedown, Dixie Peach, and the beautifully expressive guitar of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, before finishing up with the mighty Tedeschi Trucks Band. It is a serious lineup from top to bottom.

What happens when you rescue a forgotten studio that once shaped American music history - and bring it roaring back to life? This week, I sat down with Teresa Knox, the powerhouse entrepreneur and preservationist behind the rebirth of The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma - the legendary home of Leon Russell, the early Shelter Records family, and the roots of what became known as the Tulsa Sound. Teresa shares the entire arc of this wild journey: from collecting Leon Russell Slurpee cups as an 8-year-old kid, to buying the abandoned church sight unseen, to rebuilding it from the ground up and restoring it as a world-class studio, museum, archive, and engineering school. We talk about the stunning history embedded in the building - the 1915 hand-built sanctuary, the 1972 Leon-era renovations, and what it really takes to preserve a place where so many iconic recordings were born.We dig deep into the music: Leon's time in the Wrecking Crew, his explosion after Mad Dogs & Englishmen, recording with George Harrison at the Concert for Bangladesh, and his early influence on players like Elton John and Glen Campbell. Teresa shares stories from the Shelter Records years - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers arriving as Mudcrutch, J.J. Cale, The Gap Band, Phoebe Snow, Willis Alan Ramsey, Freddie King, and even Bob Marley & The Wailers turning the place into a Jamaican party. She walks us through the official Church Studio playlist, the discovery of original artifacts inside the walls, and why preserving the stories of these musicians matters just as much as preserving the building itself. Finally, we talk about the reconstruction: shoring up a collapsing foundation, solving electrical noise and RF issues, preserving historic architecture while building a modern studio, restoring a Neve 8068, installing two EMT 140 plates, and designing a hybrid analog/digital workflow. Teresa also explains how The Church Studio now trains new engineers through its hands-on vocational school, hosts sessions with top artists, runs a nonprofit to support musicians, and continues the legacy of Leon and the Tulsa Sound through events like CarniFest. Her passion for preservation, community, and world-class sound makes this one of the most inspiring studio stories I've ever heard.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ The next program starts May 11, 2026 https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK30 to get 1 month free of NI 360!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://pickrmusic.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6BLaSUX1juRYH6jHHTfa6k?si=nZtNPzHDSXi0bVQnpSU43AIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/557

It's a big milestone this week. We've hit show 800, and I've decided to do something a bit different. No themes, no guest takeovers, just a selection of music that means the world to me. These are the tracks that move me, the ones I find important, and the ones that remind me why I started this show in the first place. We're kicking off with the absolute masters of the pocket, The Meters, and keeping that heavy groove alive with Blues is Truth, Karena K, and Paul Michael. This episode feels personal because it is—we're traveling from the delta grit of Leadbelly to the singular genius of Tom Waits, through to the West London soul of Robert Hokum and the Guv'nors and The Geoff Garbow Band. I've made sure the heavyweights are present too. You'll hear Freddie King, BB King, and Buddy Guy showing us how it's done, alongside the pure fire of Derek and the Dominos and Nick Curran. There is space for the deep, soulful moments from Percy Sledge and the early magic of Fleetwood Mac, while Rob Millis, Yuri Apsy, and Bruce Mississippi Johnson keep the story moving forward. We're also checking in with The Steady Rollin' Revue, the funk-infused mastery of John Cleary, and the legendary Sly and the Family Stone. It's a real journey through the sounds that have shaped my ears over the years. It's show 800. It's special. And more than anything, it's the truth.
Joe Segal, who would have turned 100 on April 24, recorded 8- to-10,000 shows at his own Jazz Showcase and other Chicago clubs. In 2011, “Jazz Detective” Zev Feldman began visiting Segal and exploring his vast archive. Joe Segal died in 2020, but Feldman continued to work with Segal's son, current Jazz Showcase owner Wayne Segal, and on Record Store Day, live-at-the-Jazz-Showcase albums were released from Joe Henderson, Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef and Mal Waldron, plus an earlier Segal-recorded performance from Terry Callier. Feldman here describes the archive, the tapes' condition (reel-to-reel? cassettes?), the recordings' quality and why a digital step was used to prepare them for release. He also discusses why these performances were chosen for release first and what else is in store. And he tells how he wound up with 11 Record Store Day releases this year, including acclaimed ones by Freddie King and Buster Williams. (Photo by Zak Shelby-Szyszko)

The latest Blues is the Truth is live and this week we're shifting gears. There are no awards or trophies this time around, just a deep dive into the kind of music that keeps the pulse of this scene beating. We've got a massive lineup that spans the full spectrum of the craft. You'll hear the raw energy of The Milkmen, The South Island Rhythm Kings, and The Paul Michael Band alongside the world class talent of Geoff Achison and harmonica ace Giles Robson. The vibe stays heavy and authentic with tracks from John Cee Stannard, Tom Waits For No Man, and the effortlessly cool Stray Cat Willy and the Strays. We're also honoring the storytellers and the technicians like Michael Messer, Half Deaf Clatch, and the Geoff Garbow Band. And because we always respect the lineage, we've brought the giants into the room. BB King, Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are all here to remind us why we fell in love with this music in the first place. From the modern fire of Samantha Fish and Alice Armstrong to the deep pocket grooves of Willie Buck and Bob Corritore, Dave Specter, and The Steady Rollin' Revue, there isn't a wasted second. Rounding it all out with the Backyard Casanovas, Kilborn Alley, Mighty Mike Schermer, and Charlie and the Fez Kings, it's an hour of music that flows perfectly from one story to the next. It's a masterclass in why the blues is and always will be the truth.

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. The new episode of Blues is the Truth is up now, with Ian McHugh straight into it from the off. Junior Wells, Little Walter and Freddie King set the tone early, with Ry Cooder and Elvin Bishop not far behind. It keeps moving with Gary Clark Jr, Mike Zito, Tinsley Ellis and Shemekia Copeland, alongside Will Johns, Nick Curran and Gabe Stillman. There is a strong band feel running through it as well. The Robert Fossen Band, The Steady Rollin Revue and The Cadillac Kings all in the mix, plus Peter Vekesta and Blues Train, Doc Stenson and the Amazing Hot Shots and Guy Verlinde. Brother John, Garrett T Willy, Stefan Hillsheim, Johnny Burgin and Mike Finnegan all get a look in too, so it never settles in one place for long. Plenty of great music, no fuss, just how it should be.
On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Mark Lettieri for a conversation that lives right at the intersection of groove, discipline, and musical curiosity. Mark has spent years carving out a distinctive voice on the guitar—whether through his solo work, his baritone guitar explorations, or his playing with Snarky Puppy and Fearless Flyers—and this conversation is a window into how that voice developed. We talk about what has been a particularly full year for Mark: touring internationally, playing iconic rooms like the Blue Note, and balancing the demands of the road with the rare gift of time at home. For Mark, staying active isn't just part of the job—it's a creative engine. The more he plays, the more ideas emerge. One of my favorite parts of our conversation centers on restraint—the idea that what you don't play can matter just as much as what you do. Mark reflects on the records he grew up listening to, where the entire band worked together to shape a moment, and how those lessons show up when he's on stage or in the studio with world-class musicians. We also get into the nuts and bolts of being a working musician today: communication in the studio, professionalism on the gig, showing up prepared, and reading the room. Along the way, Mark shares stories about his early career in advertising and PR, a surprising David Crosby connection that introduced him to open tunings straight from the source, and what's ahead—including a fascinating upcoming project with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee, new baritone-driven material, and the continuing musical adventures that connect his solo work, Snarky Puppy, and Fearless Flyers.Key TakeawaysRestraint is musical power — sometimes the most impactful choice is knowing when not to play.Groove starts with listening — the pocket comes from how musicians respond to one another in real time.Professionalism matters — showing up early, prepared, and ready to collaborate keeps you in demand.Baritone guitar as a voice — Mark has helped expand the instrument's role beyond heavy music into funk and groove-based contexts.Creative momentum comes from staying active — touring, writing, and performing feed the creative cycle.Musical identity evolves — Mark's journey reflects influences from rock, funk, jazz, and beyond.Collaboration drives discovery — projects like his upcoming work with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee push his sound into new territory.Music from the EpisodeMagnetar (Mark Lettieri - feat. The street closures in the French Quarter have meant several miserable months for people trying to get around the iconic neighborhood and walloping small businesses that rely on easy access for their customers and clients. The new episode of Blues is the Truth is up now. Ian McHugh is back at the helm and, as always, the show is supported by the Tuesday night Blues Jam at the Rising Sun in Isleworth. It is one of those weeks where the playlist just seemed to fall into place. You start with a couple of tracks and before long the whole thing takes on a life of its own. There is some proper heavyweight blues in the mix too. Stevie Ray Vaughan turns up in fine form, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers take things right back to the British blues boom, and there is early Fleetwood Mac reminding everyone just how good they were when the blues was front and centre. This week's show also includes a couple of respectful nods to people who meant a great deal to the music. There is a tribute to Mike Vernon, whose work helped shape the British blues scene, and another to John Hammond, a true keeper of the tradition who left an enormous mark on the blues world. You will also hear the great Freddie King, Albert Collins, Junior Wells and Otis Rush. That alone would make for a decent show, but there is plenty more going on. Selwyn Birchwood brings a modern edge, Duke Robillard is on terrific form as always, and John Hammond appears twice with a couple of tracks that are well worth the space. Elsewhere there is music from Nick Curran, Jordan Officer and Laura Chavez, plus a welcome appearance from Connie Lush. Terry Marshall and Friends keep things moving nicely, the Paul Michael Band are in there again, and you will also hear Mike Vernon and the Mighty Combo, Doc Stenson and the Amazing Hot Shots, Richard Carr, Boogie Beasts, Jerry Portnoy and the Streamliners, and Studebaker John. It is a cracking mix this week. Old school blues, newer sounds, a few surprises along the way. Give it a spin and see what you think.
We'll check in with Councilmember Freddie King about redeveloping Armstrong Park, French Quarter construction dragging on, and some community meetings he's hosting about gas bills.

Episode #312 of Blues From The Ouse, broadcast live, delivers two hours of classic blues, modern blues and blues-rock, chosen by feel — not algorithms. The show opens with brand-new releases, including a world-exclusive radio play from The Stumble, alongside new music from Samantha Fish, Tom Davies & The Bluebirds, and Dirty Shoes Band. From there, the focus shifts to power trios — raw, lean blues with nowhere to hide — featuring Cream, Rory Gallagher's Taste, The James Gang, and early ZZ Top.The first hour closes with one-chord blues and hypnotic grooves from John Lee Hooker, RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Hound Dog Taylor, proving that feel beats complexity every time.Hour two is driven by listener requests, including live blues, modern UK artists, deep-cut Stones, and contemporary blues-rock, plus Ben's UK blues gig round-up. The show winds down with timeless West Side blues from Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Smokey Wilson, before closing in style with Freddie King.
Episode #311 of Blues From The Ouse delivers two hours of carefully curated blues, spanning brand-new releases, deep roots classics, powerful themes and listener-selected favourites. We open the show with fresh blues releases, featuring new music from Selwyn Birchwood, Robert John & The Wreck, Alex Lopez, and Ally Venable, including a Grammy-timed re-release with Buddy Guy. Expect modern electric swamp blues, retro revival sounds and blues-rock that bends the rules just enough. The first themed set, “The Legal Blues”, explores songs of judges, juries, prisons and punishment. From Furry Lewis and Bukka White's Parchman Farm Blues to Joe Bonamassa's cinematic re-working of Prisoner and Sonny Boy Williamson II's courtroom classic Your Funeral And My Trial, this is blues born from hard time and harder truths.Next, “Sight Unseen” shines a light on musicians who lost their sight but sharpened their sound. Featuring Ray Charles, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Sonny Terry, and Jeff Healey, this set celebrates artists whose hearing, feel and phrasing changed the shape of blues music forever. The second hour is all about listener requests, digging deep beyond algorithm playlists. Tracks come from Chicago Bob and the Blues Squad, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Hitman Blues Band, Canyon Lights, Sherman Robertson, The Zac Schulze Gang, and more — plus the latest Blues From The Ouse Gig Round-Up, highlighting upcoming UK blues shows and festivals. We wind the night down with The Great Divide, tracing the crossover between blues and country with The Allman Brothers Band, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Mudcrutch, and Area Code 615.If you love modern blues, classic blues, UK blues radio, deep themes, and music with a story to tell, this episode is for you.#311 Blues From The Ouse Playlist:Blues From The Ouse - Show Intro - 00:00:00Selwyn Birchwood - The Church Of Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues - 00:02:05Robert Jon & The Wreck - Old Man - 00:10:02Alex Lopez - Your Lovin' - 00:13:08Ally Venable Band (ft. The downstream wave of sounds that flooded the charts seemed endless in the year 1960. As was exhibited in last week's Deeper Roots exhibition of ‘also rans' from that year, it was a very, very crowded field. That field was spread far and wide across genres and levels of production, songwriting and performance quality. We take on that same strata this week in the show. More teen crushes, tragedies, soulful exchanges and instrumentals that bore earworms galore. That's what we've got in store with performances from Fats to Jackie, Smokey to Etta, the Burnette Brothers and Ricky, Dean Martin, Freddie King and Linda Laurie…all giving it their all and doing their very best to crawl to the top of their respective charts. We're getting ready for a wild Sunday night here in Santa Rosa, celebrating KOWS Community Radio at the Barrel Proof Lounge in downtown Santa Rosa. Hope you can make today's Deeper Roots show and Sunday's benefit!

Randy Resnick, an American guitarist, songwriter, and saxophonist, has had a long and illustrious career in the music industry. He has jammed with a who's who of famous blues and jazz musicians, including Don "Sugarcane" Harris, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, Canned Heat, and Freddie King. Resnick's musical journey began in the early 1970s when he started experimenting with his one- and two-handed tapping style. This innovative technique, tapping the guitar strings with both hands, allowed Resnick to create unique and complex soundscapes.Listen to the sounds of Randy Resnick HERECould you say hello on Instagram?Sign up for our occasional newsletter Come Back To EarthFollow the show and review us on Apple Podcasts: nottodaymedia.com/earthTheme music by: Lincoln ParishSign up for the Storyteller Society to join a supportive community of listeners and more.
