Blood, first released in 1997 by Monolith Studios, was the middle child of the big three Build Engine games, sandwiched in between Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior. Its combination of gory horror-inspired visuals combined with action filled FPS gameplay was a huge hit at the time of release, but has slowly faded in many people's memories. Both Quake and Half Life loom larger in most people's memories than Blood, and the question must be asked: why?Is there a good reason that Blood has become one of the dark horses of the boomer FPS genre, known mainly to connoisseurs of the genre? Or has the quality of 2.5D shooters been massively overstated? On this episode, we discuss:WeaponsBlood has a quirky roster of weapons, including a flare gun as pistol, an aerosol can with a lighter, and a voodoo doll sniper. Are these weapons just silly gimmicks, or do they all serve their purpose as part of your arsenal?Level DesignBloods level design is, for the most part, compact and filled with secrets joining levels together. Does this create a coherent sense of place, or does the abundance of tunnels just turn the level into an awkward mess?Aesthetics and PresentationBlood's story is very barebones, but is filled to the brim with references to 80s and early 90s horror films. Can a reverence for a genre of film carry an aesthetic, or is this just a case of Borderlands syndrome where its all references and no substance? We answer these questions and many more on the 113th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! Legend... it's a word that gets played out, overused, and misappropriated all the time. It also completely applies to my guest today, the most lovely chap, Tony Maddocks.Tony once fronted the mid 90's apex predators, Above All, and then the band mysteriously disappeared. When the dust settled 26 years later, I got an email asking if I'd be interested in talking to Tony about a new Above All EP, out now on all major platforms.Of course I said yes, and the rest is history. Our conversation today was light on my end and heavy on stories from Tony himself and if you're watching this on video, you're pretty going to see me smile for 60 minutes, because well.... I'm talking to a legend. This is my chat with the great frontman and founding father of metallic hardcore... at least the way I know it. This is Tony Maddocks. Chris Themelco is the front man for Orpheus Omega and runs Monolith Studios in Melbourne. Chris has contributed largely to the sound of Melbourne metal over the past several years not only through his own band but producing albums for bands such as Harlott, In Malice's Wake, Espionage, Hollow, Trigger and more. Only a few years into running his own studio, Chris has built a demand that is expanding beyond the realms of local metal scene. When it comes to the band, Orpheus Omega have capped off their 10th year in 2018 with a successful tour with Psycroptic and also signing to EVP Recordings. This has set the band up nicely for the upcoming album in the new year, which is a long time coming from the 2015 follow up of Partum Vita Mortem. Chatting to Chris, I discover that the gap between albums was a necessity as the band needed to re-calibrated and renewed themselves after near burn out. Chris reflects on what happened after the last album came out and why it was crucial to take some time out and invest in themselves individually so that the band could continue. With adversity being no stranger to the band, there appears to be a revitalised energy that has come from all of the ups and downs that will thrust Orpheus Omega back into the spotlight in 2019. Lot's of great topics covered in this episode from mental health and self development to band dynamics, launching his studio and heaps more. Music fans but specifically musicians should enjoy and be able to identify with this one. To check out more from Chris, Orpheus Omega and Monolith Studios, check out the links below.
