Welcome back to the NSG Indie Game Roundup, our monthly series featuring indie games news, plus game demos and new release discussions. It’s funny how we all used to talk about the summer being the perfect reason to catch up on our backlogs, with the notable drought of marquee game releases until the winter season, when publishers and developers arguably carpet-bomb the quarter with hundreds of game releases aimed at competing for those coveted holiday dollars. Well—that’s not so much the case anymore because the summer is also reserved for some hype-level marketing and promotion towards those aforementioned holiday releases, and we’ve now arrived at the point where players can put their anticipation to the test with interactive previews in the form of public demos they can try out. While there are sprinkles of shadow-dropped slices of games to pick out from their respective studios, Valve has taken it upon themselves to make a whole-ass spectacle called Next Fest, a limited-time event designed to court studios to publish their demos on their platform so that excitable players can, in turn, download and play them on their platform. What makes Steam Next Fest so rad is that it helps bring eyes to games both big and small, and as such, Press Pause Radio got around to playing a giant wave of Next Fest demos, and decided “Hey, we should like, talk, about these right?” So talk they indeed done DID. Join Andrew, George, and Sean as they talk about flavored Seltzer water, Echoes of Aincrad, Magical Blush, Pizza Kidd, the Steam Machine price reveal, ReStory Chill Electronics Repairs, Normal Golf Game, Duskfade, The United States Tick epidemic, and so much more! We've published every demo discussed on the show in our show notes, with links to their respective store pages so you can check them out. So please, go ham on that install button as we present you with another episode of Press Pause Radio! Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 42-GAMEZAP-4 (424-263-9274), and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show. It's Friday and what a show we got for you today! Shams and Fernando are tearing into the harsh new realities of the games industry where Microsoft's new leadership has brought out the big black hammer, as well as slowing down on Game Pass deals according to our latest findings. But that's just for todays starters. The main focus of this episode is the absolute juggernaut that is the Chinese gaming market. Yes, you spoke and we listened! Shams and Fernando break down how Chinese devs are taking over the premium PC and console space. Think you can just drop your game in China and print money? Good luck. We cover why bad localization will get you review-bombed to oblivion on Steam, the insane reality of the brutal 9-9-6 work culture, and why Chinese gamers couldn't care less if your game uses generative AI. Plus, we discuss why they love Helldivers 2 and go over our top picks from Steam Next Fest. And Robert Redford. Of course. Strap in and thanks for listening!

In episode 578 of 'Coffee with Butterscotch,' the brothers discuss whether Steam Next Fest is becoming a victim of its own success, as AI-generated slop and asset flips make it harder than ever for games to get noticed. They explore what Steam can realistically do about it, why the economics of publishing are shifting under everyone's feet, and what it actually takes to build the kind of studio track record that cuts through the noise when algorithms start failing you. One of the big news stories of this week is that a pre-order date for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been announced - just in case you were skeptical about this game being one of the biggest launches of anything ever. Speaking of launches, Xbox has launched another new round of studio closures which obviously sucks! On a more positive note, we've checked out a bunch of fun and creative new demos as part of Steam Next Fest, and Square's new action RPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. What do you mean GTA 6 might cost more than seventy dollars?! Look, if AAA prices are stressing your wallet don't panic! There is a massive world of incredible games made by independent devs and small teams that won't break the bank. Steam Next Fest is back, and Jake and Wulff dove headfirst into the indie pool to pluck out a few upcoming demos we think are going to be massive gaming hits later this year. There comes a time in every person's life when they must contend with the question: which golf game is for me? For Rob, well he and his dad spent some time this past week hitting the links in PGA 2k25. Patrick and Chia were both won over by a totally Normal Golf Game, (which they will make Rob play next week when the crew gathers at Highground). Unfortunately, there's only so much golfing that can distract from Xbox closing multiple studios, Epic putting AI in Unreal Engine 6, and Don't Nod teetering on the edge of shutting down for good. As bleak as the AAA space is, at least Steam Next Fest has given Patrick and Chia games to look forward to in the indie zone, including Penguin Colony, the next game from the folks who made Umurangi Generation, and even more golf in the form of Sting and Swing, a stylish looking metroid-vania golfing game.Reminder: Last year, the pro-Palestinian human rights movement BDS that's pressuring Israel by promoting boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against the country added Xbox to its boycott list. We got a good one this week. We're talking about the terrible state that first party studios are in AND we're talking about all the hidden gems we're finding during the Steam Next Fest. Also, I gotta apologize to my main man Jonathan. For the second week in a row, I called you out and slandered your name. This week was truly uncalled for and I sincerely apologize.
