Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn't a bad game, it's just a bad Arkham game. If you asked anyone what they wanted out of a sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight, I doubt a single person would say, "I want a co-op, live service Suicide Squad game," but that's what we got: a perfectly fine cooperative shooter with enough cutscenes to rival the runtime of The Return of the King: Extended Edition and four playable characters who feel mostly the same outside of unique traversal mechanics. But I guess it could have been worse; it could have been Gotham Knights instead.

In today's Daily Fix:WB Games has had a rough year. They had a dud with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which burned a $200 million hole in the company's wallet. Recently, MultiVersus was announced to be shutting down, and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions did not live up to the franchise hype. On the DC front, Monolith's troubled Wonder Woman game is apparently stuck in development hell, but Rocksteady may be working on a new single-player Batman Arkham game. Hello everybody! Welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk! In this episode, Josh and Colin break down the news and game release information from Xbox's most recent Developer Direct, as well as other news of Forza Horizon 5 coming to PS5. What does this mean for your trophy statistics and backlog? Well, namely there's a shit ton of trophies coming our way. If games from Xbox Studios are any indication, the coming titles like Forza and even Master Chief Collection will keep their exact same trophy lists / achievements lists. On the one hand that's great, you have many many many trophies to potentially earn. At the same time this thinking is a bit sloppy. Trophy lists were never and are never designed in this same way on the PlayStation side. The end result is something like MCC which contains 700 achievements potentially coming over to PS5. Is that really what we want? Or is there a better middle ground where games are brought over with trophy lists designed in a thoughtful way. On top of all that we of course have platinum shout outs and rage gods shout outs brought to you from our Discord! Josh takes the reigns with hosting this episode and does a fantastic job highlighting the smaller and more obscure titles that our community has been chasing Platinums in. Finally, listener inquiries and what we've been playing round out the show. Josh has been chasing his dream of becoming the new drummer for a rock group in his recent VR adventures, as well as chancing survival in multiple games with exclusion zones, (Pacific Drive, and Stalker). Colin continues his incredibly long grind with Resident Evil: Revelations, as well as chats Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, and his first 20 hours or so with Star Wars: Outlaws. Thank you so so much for listening to the episode, we hope that you enjoy!

In today's Daily Fix:January is already half over, but Sony is still adding games to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue. New additions include God of War: Ragnarök, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand, and more. Retro titles Medieval 2 and Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (hopefully this can hold PS5 players over until the excellent The Great Circle arrives). In other news, Microsoft has been hit with even more layoffs across several divisions including gaming. The number of affected staff is currently unknown. And finally, the last content update for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is out, adding new weapons and cosmetics and a true ending to the game. And just like most of the story, the ending is proving to already be controversial.

Modern AAA Gaming Got EMBARASSED in 2024...

AAA gaming flops like Star Wars Outlaws, Dragon Age: The Veil, and Concord (costing $200M and $500M respectively) indicate a failure to connect with audiences, while indie game MiSide (developed by a 2-person Russian team) topped charts and matched AAA sales in just 2 weeks. The gaming industry is experiencing a significant shift as indie and double-A titles surpass AAA games in popularity, driven by player dissatisfaction with major studios' monetization practices and a demand for fresh, innovative content. AAA games spent $400M on Concord and $200M on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, resulting in massive losses, while indie game Mei made $9M in 2 weeks on a tiny budget. Dragon Age: The Veil faced backlash for deviating from the series, including "hamfisted politics" and "predatory monetization", while indie games focused on giving players what they want based on unsolicited feedback from social media. AAA games like Dragon Age: The Veil received mixed reviews and were criticized by gamers for being "woke", while indie games prioritized player preferences. The $200M loss for Warner Bros. from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League highlights the financial risks of AAA game development. The success of Mei, a Russian-developed, anime-inspired, psychological horror game, suggests a shift in player preferences towards unique, niche experiences over big-budget productions. 00:00 2024 showcased a significant shift in gaming, with indie and double-A titles outperforming AAA games, highlighting a decline in the dominance of major studios. 01:40 Players are turning to indie games like MiSide as major AAA titles from companies like Activision and Ubisoft fail to meet expectations in 2024. 03:51 Players are turning away from AAA games over monetization issues and perceived wokeness, while indie games flourish by meeting market demands. 05:29 Modern AAA games are struggling with low player counts and poor sales compared to successful titles in 2024. 07:07 Smaller indie games are outshining costly AAA titles as industry professionals pivot to new opportunities amid job losses. 08:47 Consumers have won the culture war, forcing game developers to heed feedback for successful products and reshaping gaming, comics, and movies. 11:06 The entertainment industry will undergo a transformative reset, paving the way for innovative games, comics, and movies by moving past outdated franchises. 12:52 It's time to retire long-standing gaming franchises to make way for fresh ideas and innovations.

Geoff Keighley's 'The Game Awards' festivities didn't disappoint this year. Quite the contrary, it was arguably the single strongest showing of new game announcements the industry has seen in seemingly forever, and it was capped-off with what many of us have long awaited: Naughty Dog's new game. For the first time since 2005's Jak X: Combat Racing on PlayStation 2, Sony's crown jewel studio is readying a product that's aligned neither with Uncharted nor The Last of Us. It's called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, it's about a spacefaring bounty hunter and a mysterious alien planet, and it's coming to PlayStation 5 at an undetermined point in the future. Naturally, we have much to discuss. Other TGA announcements of note include a surprise update for Helldivers 2, Capcom reveals in the form of new games in the Onimusha and Okami series, a brand new multiplayer Elden Ring spin-off called Nightreign, our first look at Borderlands 4 and The Witcher IV, the long-awaited revival of the Turok IP, the first new 2D Ninja Gaiden in more than three decades, and much more. And there's a regular ol' episode of Sacred Symbols underneath all of that, too, focused on the purported leak of Bend Studio's new game, the death of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a serious lawsuit filed against Bungie by a fired executive, final word on long-defunct vaporware PS4 project Wild, and more. We wrap things up with listener inquiries on topics like rumors of an upcoming Steam console, parasocial relationships in the creator space, the ability of dialogue to ruin a perfectly good user experience, and a conundrum surrounding perpetual hiccups and $100 million. Indiana Jones and  The Great Circle received high praising reviews  upon its release  and may lead to the desire for dead gaming series to revived  from the 80s. The new live service game Marvel Rivals is also receiving great reviews as Overwatch 2 finally has some competition for its hero shooter platform. In today's Daily Fix:Hideo Kojima's first post-Metal Gear game, Death Stranding, has been a PlayStation console exclusive since its release in 2019. It received a PC portin 2020, but it seemed like Xbox One and Series X|S were going to miss out. This morning, however, Xbox owners were pleasantly surprised to see Death Stranding appear on the Microsoft Store, and with a launch sale of 50% off. The game is being published by 505 Games, and won't be the last Kojima title to hit the Xbox: his mysterious game titled OD will arrive on the Series X|S at some point, and his espionage action game (that's not Metal Gear), Physint will hit PlayStation on its release. In other news, Warner Bros. Games has revealed another game burning a hole in its pockets: MultiVersus, the Smash Bros-esque fighter starring WB properties like Scooby-Doo, DC Comics, and more. The game apparently added $100 million in losses to the company, on top of the $200 million dud that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. And finally, Sony has patented a new PlayStation controller featuring a "Rewind" button. Apparently it will let you rewind live gameplay, but no new games have been announced that will take advantage of that feature (yet).

Nine months after the release of Rocksteady's much anticipated “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” Jake sat down and gave the much-maligned live-service shooter a fair shot. Was it as bad as everyone said or is it an underrated gem? Is it successful as a live-service game? He answers all of this and more. From big reveals like the sequel to Tsushima called, Ghost of Yotei. Which follows a new female lead protagonist named Astu rather than Jin Sakai and is set over 400 years in the future with the rise of imperialism and gunpowder in the new region of Japan. Sony confirms that its trying to set a new cross media universe with John Wick Director Chad Stahelski. It'll create movies, tv shows, and other spin offs. Also we have ourselves a hard date for LEGO Horizon Adventures with new pre-order bonuses and set to release on PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. As well as a Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered set for PS5 in October the same day as Dragon Age The Veilguard which showed new PS5 Pro enhanced gameplay at the showcase. Also, did Concord really cost 400 million dollars? Probably not but with rumors and hearsay it seems like that could be the case but people often forget the personal element as they get carried away. Ubisoft is in dire straits as it reassesses that way it releases AAA blockbusters as Star Wars Outlaws seemingly fails to meet even low expectations. They've chosen to delay the much anticipated holiday game Assassin's Creed Shadows to February of next year 2025. It seems like its make or break for Ubisoft  as well as Rocksteady as its rumored through credible sources that theyre making a new Batman game after the failings of Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League earlier this year.

We break down the challenging economics (while also admiring Mark Cerny's ASMR-style presentation). Also: GameStop earnings tumble, more Microsoft layoffs, Unity reverses a terrible decision, and can AI companies just stop stealing our stuff? In this episode, we discuss Sony's surprising decision to quickly delist the troubled shooter Concord and whether we think it will return as a free-to-play title or if it's gone for good. We also dive into Randy Pitchford's...interesting comparison of Gearbox Software to The Beatles and the recent layoffs at Rocksteady following the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Additionally, we touch on the ongoing contract disputes between unionized staff at Raven Software and Activision. Brad, fully immersed in strategy games, shares his impressions of XCOM 2 and Songs of Conquest. To wrap things up, Brad celebrates the recent Oasis reunion announcement by discussing his favorite songs from the band.
