The only thing better as a band than hitting the road after releasing an album is hitting the road with your mates, so it was a no-brainer really when Melodic Death metal powerhouse ORPHEUS OMEGA (VIC) and Symphonic Gothic Metal masters CARMERIA (NSW) announced they would be touring together to promote recent albums.Dubbed the Embers Of Tragedy Australian Tour, the run of shows celebrates Orpheus Omega's Emberglow album and Carmeria's Tragedie D'amour, with both releases considered as pivotal in the blossoming futures of both bands. Emberglow sonically marrie sOrpheus Omega's classic melodic death metal roots while taking their largest leaps yet into uncharted territory including moments of progressive metal, metalcore, doom metal and more. It is a brave and typically bold step forward for the band, who over five albums and three EP's have continually pushed themselves and their boundaries, despite gathering a loyal fanbase that would be satisfied with their music changing only minimally.HEAVY sat down with the whole band recently to discuss the tour and whatever else seemed appropriate at the time.We discussed the Emberglow in greater detail and how ambitious the band actually considers their sonic shift. The band mentioned that the album has a strong personal element, with each band member contributing their own unique influences. They emphasized the importance of the pre-production process in shaping the album's cohesive sound and talked about the balance between different genres in the album and how difficult it was to get right. They also discussed their upcoming tour and the effort they put into creating a memorable live show experience, just what to expect and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Combining the haunting sounds of dark symphonic metal with the lovelorn energy of gothic rock, Blue Mountains music machine Carmeria have upped the anti significantly with their recently released sophomore album Tragédie D'amour. While their 2021 debut album Advenae announced the arrival of Carmeria it was also somewhat of a tease, showcasing a sonic temperament and direction that was fresh and vibrant without tipping its hand too far in any given direction. As such, the follow-up album was especially important for the band. They could either deliver more of the same - which would have been an acceptable outcome - or they could continue to traverse a more diverse path on the open highway of musical ability. They chose the latter, with the sound on Tragedie D'Amour taking on a more energetic gothic rock approach than its predecessor. To celebrate the recent release, Carmeria are preparing to hit the road for a run of dates with melodic death metal masters Orpheus Omega dubbed the Embers Of Tragedy Australian Tour. HEAVY spent some time with frontman Jordan Von Grae to get more information, starting with last-minute preparations before hitting the road."Really it's just rehearsals and tweaking bits and pieces of the performance," he offered. "So coming up with specific set lists for each show, things like that. Obviously, with these kinds of shows and tours, you have different set lengths for the different shows. One of the sets is 40 minutes and I think another is 50 to an hour, so you're kind of picking and choosing which songs you feel would fit best and of course having to axe some that you might not wanna axe (laughs), But the last couple of weeks before a tour is really about tightening everything up. There's been a bit of work. We've pretty much only had one rehearsal (smiles) so far since being back, and we've got two more planned for the next week. Off the back of that it will be just about tweaking little production things and coming up with some additional ideas for additional performance pazazz."In the full interview, Jordan discussed the release of each band's new albums. He expressed relief and satisfaction with the positive reception of Tragédie D'amour, which took on a more energetic Gothic rock approach. Jordan explained that the change in sound was a deliberate choice to explore different themes, such as love and loss, and to delve into influences like bands like HIM and Lord of the Lost.Jordan discussed the lessons learned from making the band's debut album, which they carried over into album number two. He mentioned that the process became more streamlined, allowing them to produce the second album in half the time. Jordan also talked about his role as producer for this album, stating that it allowed for a more natural sound to the songs but also required him to learn temperance to avoid overdoing it. He expressed excitement about the upcoming tour with Orpheus Omega, stating that they both appreciate each other's work and are looking forward to playing together. We also surprised him with our new Photo Bomb segment, plus plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
In this interview with Jordan Von Grae from Carmeria, we dive into the band's upcoming Australian tour, their fusion of gothic, symphonic, and progressive elements, and the influences behind their sound. We discuss the cinematic qualities of albums like Advenae and Tragédie d'amour and the songwriting and production process. Jordan also shares insights on the importance of storytelling in their lyrics, key themes, and personal experiences that shape their music. In wrapping up 2023 for the Scars and Guitars podcast, I take a closer look at the significant events and highlights defining the musical journey. Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy. The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential. In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books. Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy. Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.
Interview by Kris PetersAussie rock and metal is currently in good hands. With a healthy swathe of older, established bands still doing the circuit and pumping out albums and an ever growing assortment of new and up and coming bands feeding off their wisdom it is fair to say the future of Australian music has never looked or sounded as good.So much so that few bands stand out and demand attention, many falling victim to the wealth of music saturating the market in ever increasing volumes. But there are a couple of bands that manage to stay elevated in the public spotlight, be it through hard work, touring or quality of material - or, more often, all three. One such band is Melbourne's Triple Kill whose high energy music and live shows have seen them maintain a steady upward trajectory that should peak even further with the impending release of their latest album Blackened Dawn.Another banger full of meaty guitars and driving force, Blackened Dawn gives you a ringside seat at the next phase of Triple Kill's musical journey and peels back yet more layers of their sonic landscape.Drummer Connor O'Keane and bass player Ethan White joined HEAVY to take us inside the album."Excited is an understatement, for sure," O'Keane quipped when asked how they were feeling on the eve of the August 25 release. "Also exhausted and we're not even touring yet (laughs). The amount of work we've put in behind the scenes to get this out is a lot, especially in the last month. I think we've put out three music videos in the last month while also practicing and getting ready for tour."We ask the boys to explain Blackened Dawn from a musical point of view."We wanted to advance our own skills," White measured, "so having that thing that kept us all locked inside for a couple of years really allowed us to take a moment to practice what we've got and develop some new skills. Or try some more challenging things that we hadn't touched on before in the way of writing something. This album is definitely from a musical standpoint something that we have advanced on. It's something new for us and something a bit more challenging in the way of our writing. Then the themes are just things that we love.""I think we've certainly tried to have this album be a step up for us musically in each of our own departments," O'Keane added, "while also looking back at the stuff that we really like about the first album and the stuff that we think has stood the test of time and expand upon those and hone in on the stuff that we feel worked the most in the first album."In the full interview, the boys talk more about what to expect from Blackened Dawn, how the world situation at the time of writing influenced the end result, the surprise opening track and the idea behind it, their upcoming shows with Orpheus Omega and what to expect, what's next for Triple Kill and more.
Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne melodic death metal outfit Orpheus Omega have built a solid name based on their energetic and frenetic live performances.Which is why not playing for long periods of time due to recent world events put a massive strain on the band. So much so that Orpheus Omega spent their time looking inwards and re-evaluating their growing footprint on the musical landscape. The band also used their downtime to good creative effect, laying the platform for what would become their latest EP Portraits.A freshly unique take on things whereby each of the five band members contributed one song each to the EP, Portraits is a deeply personal and liberating album for Orpheus Omega that has resonated with music lovers everywhere. After having played only one show earlier this year to celebrate the EP's release, Orpheus Omega are about to set off on the Riff N Tour with rockers Triple Kill, starting on August 25 and winding its way around the length and breadth of this country before finishing up in late September.Bass player Leon Monaco joined HEAVY to talk more about music and touring."Oh man, I am so excited," he gushed. "We have only played one show all year for 2023, but that's because we have been putting all of our eggs into this tour basket. We cannot wait to get out there and have this awesome month long adventure."We ask Monaco how he prepares himself mentally and physically for a tour of this magnitude."I guess step one is make sure you have enough work leave," he laughed. "Musically, I just did Dry July, so I have worked on myself and a couple of the other band members have been hitting up the gym and bulking up a little, just to try and get healthier and fitter so we can move around and jump around on stage without our old man backs complaining. As soon as the tour begins we always do our best to eat well during the days, even if we're having a couple of beers or whatever happens at night, during the day we realise we still need to be adults. We're not 12 any more (laughs), we're not 21 any more, we can't do this to ourselves so we look after each other and look after ourselves."The tour is spread out over more than a month, with Monaco having good justification for playing mainly on weekends."I find if we have an international band come in anyone will come out on a weeknight to see the international band," he mused, "because they're here, you have to see them. Whereas capitalising on those weekends is definitely an easier way to do it when you're an Australian band and you're up against all the other Australian bands. Weekends are definitely where it's at. We don't mind travelling mid week, we kinda like it. I think one of our shows in Gold Coast is on a Thursday and then there's a Sydney one on a Sunday. We're always happy to play the off Friday and Saturday night shows, we just need the punters to come out and meet us half way too."In the full interview, Leon talks more about the tour and what to expect, touring with Triple Kill and why they are the perfect touring partners, their latest EP Portraits and each member writing a song each, each of those songs analysed individually, what's next for Orpheus Omega and more.
I have the talented Chris Themelco from the renowned Melbourne band Orpheus Omega on teh show in this episode. With their new EP "Portraits" set to release on April 20, 2023, Chris not only shares insights about the EP but also offers a wealth of knowledge and thoughtful opinions on various topics related to production, group dynamics in a band setup, and mentorship for young and impressionable bands. As always, Chris is an engaging and insightful guest, making for a fantastic chat that is not to be missed.
By Erin EddyNot too many of us would be fortunate enough to be able to claim to be more passionate about our job 15 years in, than we were at the very beginning, but Orpheus Omega frontman Chris Themelco says that's precisely the case for him.“This far into the band, I actually feel more energised and motivated than any other point,” heexplains. “During lockdown there were definitely those moments where we had that chat of ‘what if we're done?' you know, but we very quickly realised that was definitely not the case.”Orpheus Omega is about to release a five track EP that approaches song writing from a different angle than the band ordinarily takes. Each of the five members has penned a song of their own, and the band has compiled these to create the Portraits EP.“Everyone wrote their own song with their own sort of take and it's where everyone's at at this point in time as a person,” says Chris, regarding this project. They have also put a lot of thought and effort into the way in which this EP will be released.“We're doing it as a limited vinyl release through Antivinyl Vinyl Club and that's specifically because the artwork and everything is really put together to be as a package,” says Chris, “It'll be on Spotify and stuff, but the whole idea was centred around doing it as a vinyl, and that makes it kind of exciting as well.”Each song is being released as a single, with the fifth and final song, Exit To Observe, dropping on April 20, when the entire EP will be available. Currently four of the five songs have been released into the wild and can be found on streaming platforms, and music videos can be found on the band's YouTube channel. To celebrate the release of Portraits, Orpheus Omega have scheduled a launch show on May 6 at The Evelyn in Melbourne.“We've got some pretty cool ideas in mind specifically for this show,” teases Chris, “so I would say if you haven't seen us before, or even if you have and you want to see something a bit different from us, this is definitely the show to get to.”HEAVY got the chance to have an in depth conversation with Chris about the new EP, the launch gig and music festivals, including his take on the experience that was Knotfest.

After finally getting to complete their staggered 10 year anniversary tour in February this year, Melbourne metal outfit Orpheus Omega can look more to the future. While already starting on new material, the band is still keen to explore fresh musical territories and expand their reach, so when the opportunity arose to headline this weekend's Metal Health show at the Back Room in Annerley on April 30 the five piece jumped at the chance.Metal Health is in it's first year and aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and spread the word through music that we are all susceptible and there is no shame in not being okay.Backed up by bands from far and wide, including Hidden Intent, Lycanthrope, Eye Of The Enemy, Where The Devil, Freedom Of Fear and Minus Life, Orpheus Omega are humbled by the opportunity to spearhead what is hoped to become an annual event, with vocalist Chris Themelco joining HEAVY to chat about the show."It's our first time back to Brisbane in three years, for a multitude of reasons,” he enthused. “Brisbane was the first place that we ever played outside of Melbourne so it's like a second home to us so we're really looking forward to coming back up and playing for such an awesome cause with an incredibly good line up. It's just gonna be... that feeling of being back on stage with awesome bands so I really can't wait. It's gonna be a good time."While many people suffer in silence with mental health issues, events like Metal Health try to tell people that it's okay to not be okay."I think the good part of it as well is knowing all of the people going and the punters are aware of what this gig stands for and they're gonna be a part of that,” Themelco offered. “Which also lends the thing of I know what the point of this gig is and if you're going there's a good chance that you've had some impact from mental health or you're at least aware or someone else you know has ben and because buying tickets to that show is supporting that thing you can be pretty sure the other people going, at the very least, if they haven't necessarily gone through some mental health struggles of their own they are supporting something that is helping that which shines a light on it itself and makes it a little bit more confidence inspiring for the people who are going and knowing this is for those people. specially as a band member I'm sure a lot of the other bands have spoken about their own things but when it comes to mental health issues, I think it affects everyone."In the full interview, Chris talks about the correlation between heavy metal and health, the bands recent anniversary tour, farewelling founding guitarist Joao Goncalves, future plans and more.
Mental Health issues are a universal problem. They don't target a specific genre, race or sex, and it is sometimes the people you think are least likely to be afflicted that are actually the most in need.It is something that can always be helped by awareness, and is also something which should never cause shame. Every one of us has had negative thoughts in their life, but, unfortunately, those thoughts manifest into things far worse for others.Recognising this from personal experience and from hearing the stories of those around him, Minus Life front man Scott Moss has decided to put on a charity heavy metal concert to raise much needed funds and awareness for mental health. The event, called Metal Health, will be held at The Back Room, Annerley on April 30, featuring Orpheus Omega, Freedom Of Fear, Eye Of The Enemy, Lycanthrope, Snake Mountain, Where The Devil, Minds End, Upon The Pyre, Tetrament and Minus Life.It is the first of what is hoped will become an annual event, with Moss joining HEAVY to chat about Metal Health in more detail."Over the years we've had many friends in the metal scene suffer - the first person for me that hit home was a good friend of mine Snails. Back in the day many years ago, when the Basement was a hub of metal for Brisbane, Snails was that one guy that was always at every show. He unfortunately committed suicide and other people in the scene over the years have committed suicide or are always talking about their mental health and I started looking into things about mental health and noticed there wasn't many avenues for us to find somebody we could connect with. I looked around for about three months and I found Stride mental health services and out of all of them they deal with kids to older people, whereas most focus on 18 to 25 year olds. The idea was to put on an event that could raise funds and bridge the gap for us. People in the scene can know they (Stride) are going to be there at the show and maybe open up the lines of communication. Also while we are there at the show we are listening to music we love and there could be something there on the night that somebody that hasn't spoken about and thinks this is the perfect opportunity. You're in an environment where everybody is there for a reason and they could open up that night and maybe save a life. That's what it's all about. Developing pathways for us to get to those helpers and services that actually understand people from our community. The main lady that runs it, her husband is a metalhead, so it seemed like a perfect fit!”In the full interview Scott talks more about Metal Health and his reasons for putting it on, the bands playing and how they have come together, the importance of awareness when it comes to mental health, the correlation between heavy metal and mental health, how you can contribute even if you can't go to the show, understand mental health and more.

Melbourne melodic death metal outfit Orpheus Omega this year celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album Bleed The Way.Not only will they be taking to the road in the coming weeks to showcase that album, they have also just released a split E.P with touring partners Triple Kill titled Career Suicide which features three covers from each band of pop/punk songs that inspired them musically. In a novel twist, two members who joined Orpheus Omega after that debut album joined HEAVY for a chat about it and how good it feels to be celebrating this milestone."Leon and I were both fans of Orpheus when Bleed The Way came out," enthused Luke, "so this was ten years ago, so we've been supporters of the band, and it's wonderful for myself to come into the fold and contribute to its legacy. It's a record that means a lot to me.""100%," affirmed Leon. "It was probably one of the first major metal bands that I supported back in the day. Ten odd years ago Bleed The Way was released and I was blown away by how good it was and these guys literally lived around the corner from me! It was inspiring. Ever since then it was oh, I need to know these guys and be friends with these guys and create great music like them and that was the inspiration that eventually led both myself and Luke to falling into this band.""Bleed The Way was instrumental in my own musical growth with my own project before I joined Orpheus," Luke continued. "It's wonderful to be able to bring it to a new, potentially new ears into the more recent material that might not be so familiar with the older tracks."In the full interview the boys talk more about the legacy of Bleed The Way, how Orpheus Omega has changed musically over that decade, their upcoming tour, the new E.P and what songs they chose plus more.
Chris and the lads in Orpheus Omega have teamed up with Triple Kill for a run of shows on the Australian east coast in June 2021 to support the launch of the split EP Career Suicide, in which the band's cover Blink-182, Fountains of Wayne and other pop/ punk faves. Chris is on hand to discuss everything from the EP, the shows, COVID-19, and a bunch of other worthy topics.

HEAVY Mag chats to Chris Themelco from Orpheus Omega about their brand new album - Wear Your Sins.
Chris Themelco is the front man for Orpheus Omega and runs Monolith Studios in Melbourne. Chris has contributed largely to the sound of Melbourne metal over the past several years not only through his own band but producing albums for bands such as Harlott, In Malice's Wake, Espionage, Hollow, Trigger and more. Only a few years into running his own studio, Chris has built a demand that is expanding beyond the realms of local metal scene. When it comes to the band, Orpheus Omega have capped off their 10th year in 2018 with a successful tour with Psycroptic and also signing to EVP Recordings. This has set the band up nicely for the upcoming album in the new year, which is a long time coming from the 2015 follow up of Partum Vita Mortem. Chatting to Chris, I discover that the gap between albums was a necessity as the band needed to re-calibrated and renewed themselves after near burn out. Chris reflects on what happened after the last album came out and why it was crucial to take some time out and invest in themselves individually so that the band could continue. With adversity being no stranger to the band, there appears to be a revitalised energy that has come from all of the ups and downs that will thrust Orpheus Omega back into the spotlight in 2019. Lot's of great topics covered in this episode from mental health and self development to band dynamics, launching his studio and heaps more. Music fans but specifically musicians should enjoy and be able to identify with this one. To check out more from Chris, Orpheus Omega and Monolith Studios, check out the links below. Flynn Effect's famously ambitious live show has seen the band perform alongside local heavyweights Orpheus Omega,Osaka Punch and Darkcell, as well as share the stage with Lacuna Coil, Wednesday 13, Davey Suicide and Seether. The band's second album Obsidian (2017) comes equipped with super-sized hooks and musical nuance alike, switching from one end of the rock spectrum to the other in a heartbeat.
