Reform Judaism looks different today than it did a century ago. There are a lot of factors that lead to that change, but among these is Rabbi Alexander Schindler (1925-2000). Doing most of his work in the middle of the 20th century, Schindler was either part of or directly responsible for the changes in Reform (and even American) Judaism that we see today. In his biography of Rabbi Schindler, Above All, We Are Jews: A Biography of Rabbi Alexander Schindler (CCAR Press), Dr. Michael Meyer paints a picture of an extraordinarily influential leader in the history of Reform Judaism. From 1973 to 1996, he served as president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (today's Union for Reform Judaism), where his charisma and vision raised the Reform Movement to unprecedented influence. Never afraid to be controversial, he argued for recognizing patrilineal descent, institutionalized outreach to interfaith families and non-Jews, and championed LGBTQ rights and racial equality. He was a tireless advocate for Israel while maintaining diaspora Jews' right to speak out independently on the Jewish state. In this conversation, historian Michael A. Meyer brings Rabbi Schindler to life. His book, which he discusses with us, is based on extensive archival research and interviews and paints a definitive portrait of Schindler's life. Michael Meyer is the Adolph S. Ochs Professor of Jewish History Emeritus at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, where he taught since 1967. A leading scholar of modern Jewish history, Meyer has authored several award-winning books, including The Origins of the Modern Jew, Response to Modernity, and recent biographies of Rabbis Leo Baeck and Alexander Schindler. He served as president of the Association for Jewish Studies and the Leo Baeck Institute, and held visiting positions at Hebrew University, Ben Gurion University, and others. Honored internationally, he received the Moses Mendelssohn Award and the Order of Merit from the German Federal Republic. Rabbi Marc Katz is the Senior Rabbi at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, NJ. He is most recently the author of Yochanan's Gamble: Judaism's Pragmatic Approach to Life (JPS) Learn more about your ad choices. Pastor Dale BensonIf you want to experience the thriving side of love, you must make a commitment to the striving side of love. Ephesians 4:1-6 (NRSV)* There is no growth in the comfort zone. There is no comfort in the growth zone.* You are a lot of work. I am a lot of work. So we are going to have to work in order for this to work. One:* Body.* Spirit.* Hope of your Calling.* Lord.* Faith.* Baptism.* God and Father of All. God of All:* One God and Father of ALL (panton)* Above ALL (panton)* Through ALL (panton)* In Y'ALL (pacin humin) With all:* Humility.* Meekness.* Patience.* Bearing with one another in love. I used to think that if we all accepted Christ and were filled with the same Holy Spirit, unity in the Spirit happened as a byproduct.  If there were no unity, then either some of us or all of us wouldn't be filled with the Spirit. Doesn't Unity in the Spirit just happen? Most churches gather around one of three things: Churches that tend to focus on unity typically end up in splits because they can't agree upon what they need to be unified over. Churches that focus on discipleship tend toward a sort of educational model where everything focuses on learning and learning, and learning and they can become ingrown and never reaching out. Churches that focus on evangelism should necessarily disciple their people in order to evangelize, and the unity is derived from this shared mission. - Nicky Gumbel Striving in Truth. Striving in Love. Striving in Unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace.* National Championship Games: “We don't know how we got here.  It just kinda happened.” Said no team ever.* “I don't care if you get to the top of the mountain quickly or slowly, but you have to acknowledge the mountain.” – Simon Sinek.* Strive to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up into. In Revelation 2, this church was praised for their works, toil, and endurance. They had tested false teachers. They had persevered, BUT – they had forgotten the love they had at first.  This is the same church that is believed to be where John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, and “The Disciple of Love” pastored. This church forgot the love they had at first. It takes work.  It takes courage. It takes persistence. The power of love is found in the work of love. Ephesians 3:14-19 (NRSV)

A more humane education feels very necessary right now. Our planet and its inhabitants all over the world seem to be crying out for it.  Humane Educators Zoe Weil and Rae Sikora created IHE In 1996 to do precisely this. And so it is a huge pleasure this week to be able to welcome Zoe, and her colleague Julie Meltzer, from the Institute onto the podcast. Zoe Weil is the co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE) and is considered a pioneer in the comprehensive humane education movement. Zoe created IHE's M.Ed., M.A., and graduate certificate programs, as well as IHE's Solutionary Framework, which guides teachers in bringing solutionary thinking and action to their students.  Zoe is the author of eight books including Amazon #1 New Release in Social Philosophy and Popular Applied Psychology, The Solutionary Way: Transform Your Life, Your Community, and the World for the Better with a Foreword by Jane Goodall (2024), Amazon #1 Best Seller in the Philosophy and Social Aspects of Education, The World Becomes What We Teach: Educating a Generation of Solutionaries (2021/2016), Nautilus Silver Medal winner, Most Good, Least Harm: A Simple Principle for a Better World and Meaningful Life (2009), The Power and Promise of Humane Education (2004), and Above All, Be Kind: Raising a Humane Child in Challenging Times (2003). She has also written books for young people, including Moonbeam Gold Medal winner, Claude and Medea: The Hellburn Dogs (2023/2007), about 12-year-old activists inspired by their teacher to right wrongs where they find them, and So, You Love Animals: An Action-Packed, Fun-Filled Book to Help Kids Help Animals (1994). Julie Meltzer, Ph.D., is a self-described “pragmatic visionary” who is committed to creating schools that truly help students prepare to successfully meet their futures. She is a tireless advocate for literacy, justice and equity which she sees as integrally related. Julie supports teachers and administrators to develop collective efficacy to teach their students how to become changemakers. She agrees with Zoe Weil that our best hope for the planet is to educate a generation of solutionaries. After extensive experience in education including as a teacher, teacher education faculty member, district administrator, consultant, researcher, program evaluator, and project lead, to her current role as Director of K-12 and Teacher Education for IHE. Julie is also a published author, sought-after speaker and editor/reviewer. When not focused on teaching and learning, Julie enjoys hiking, dancing, writing poetry, reading international women's and children's literature, traveling, and working for social and environmental justice. Solomon's story illustrates that seeking wisdom made him great and his reign glorious. Pastor Femi challenged us to prioritize wisdom over material desires. While we often focus on asking God for things, Solomon's example reminds us that seeking understanding brings lasting promotion and a truly remarkable life. Quoting scriptures PFP urged us "Never let wisdom go, and it will make your life glorious!”

In the security industry, the ideal posture is to be proactive. To do this, requires a relationship with people, processes, tools, and the core values of the client. And ideally, the client is now able to identify risk, analyze and assess that risk, and then mitigate the risk down to an acceptable level.  If this is true, how do you assess the methodology and the core values of a vendor before they take on this central and significant task? We have a discussion with the co-founder of TorchStone Global, David Niccolini. David discusses the "Business of Before" in the context of their code of ethics. You can see why the company has won numerous awards and the respect of key industry insiders.  As a reference, the key elements of this code are: Above All, Do No Harm We endeavor to do no harm, and we actively work to do good. That statement might seem trite to some, but to those associated with TorchStone, we mean it sincerely. We try hard to form relationships of trust with the people with whom we work. We do all we can to develop and maintain that trust, to uphold professional standards, and to take full responsibility for our actions. Gut Check We refuse engagements or recuse ourselves from situations that do not pass these simple gut check questions: 1) Is this going to cause harm to someone or something? 2) Is this activity lawful? 3) Would I be comfortable if this work was made public? We expect and demand that employees and associates will consult with TorchStone leadership immediately if something seems amiss with any relationship or project. We Honor the Dignity and Worth of All People We deeply believe in the dignity and worth of all people. We treat others with respect, and we do not tolerate harassment or discrimination of any kind. TorchStone will NOT assist in any investigation or provide any services (paid or pro bono) that may have been requested with the intent to kill, injure, suppress, stalk, or harass an individual or group. TorchStone will NOT conduct any operations or provide any services that violate others' rights or any fundamental freedoms. TorchStone will NOT use deception, coercion, or threats to obtain information or provide services. This reinforces that above all, we at TorchStone strive to do no harm. We Follow Laws and Regulations, and Foster Ethical Relationships We respect the laws and regulations wherever we do business around the world. TorchStone assesses and mitigates the risk of potential physical, cyber, and reputational threats through lawful open-source information collection, principled executive protection, and sound security consulting. We do not take on any work that may infringe upon another person's or group's fundamental rights. We are honest and transparent in our discussions with employees, partners, and clients about what we can and cannot do. We build positive relationships free from corruption, bribes, kickbacks, or any other unethical activity. If potential conflicts of interest arise, financial or otherwise, we immediately consult with all parties involved, both internal and external, to transparently discuss the situation and to identify, together, the best way forward. We Welcome Diversity TorchStone is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer for all qualified candidates. We welcome and support people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics. We Play Nice in the Sandbox We respect our competitors. While we are focused on growing our company, we want to do so in a way that reflects our values. We want to compete with our competitors fairly and honestly. How Can We Be Better? In order to improve, we need to know when we are falling short. TorchStone supports a culture of trust and encourages speaking-up when something is not right. We are all human. This means that not only are we fallible, but also, we have feelings. It does not feel good to tell someone when something is not working, nor does it feel good to receive that information. We recognize that speaking up in these situations takes courage, and listening takes humility. We value that courage and are committed to humbly listening to feedback (the good, the bad, and the ugly). Enjoy the Conversation!

Recently, an email arrived from a trusted promotional source in the UK, and much to my surprise it was to let me know about a new band that had risen from the ashes of a legendary metallic hardcore act. I was surprised that a favorite band of mine, Above All, had gone into indefinite hiatus. However, the same musical pause had birthed a new project that excited me because my buddy, Tony Maddocks, of the aforementioned Above All, had a new thing and he was fronting it. We had to get together to chat about it, so here we are. Gratefully, we were also joined by Ron D, a monster guitarist and songwriter who has partnered with Tony to create this new metal monster and breaker of souls. I'm happy to be one of the limited few that get to announce the splash of this coming release! Vegas, terrorists, Trump and Taylor Swift! IRON sharpens IRON! The threat of loosing our sons and daughters to a generation of gay velociraptors is upon us and war is a symptom of man's failure as a thinking animal. Unfortunately you never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice and like Flash once said, “it had to be this way”. Stocks are shifting and the contracts are being filled. The US treasury allocated war bonds and money specifically for an upcoming major event in 2023 and countries around the world unite against our way of life under the name of the biggest religion on the face of our hollow earth. In this brutal discovery of threats and unrest and violence I had to call in my cut throat specialist. The man that will help us understand, digest and ABOVE ALL stay vigilant. 24 Minute Bible - A Simple Journey to Understand the Bible

THE BOOK OF REVELATION-- Episode #117 On a regular basis we have the newest report of the ‘end of the world’. Is is going to be a meteor like ‘Armageddon’? Or will it be ‘nuclear war’? How about a world wide pandemic? Or of course the ‘ubiquitous’ GLOBAL WARMING scare (or scam)? WORLD WIDE POLLUTION maybe? We all have some thoughts, don't we. ABOVE ALL, however we must understand that the main purpose of the book of REVELATION is not to SCARE US… or even to inform us how the world is going to end! It is to remind us that God will PROTECT US FROM OURSELVES… that this WORLD IS NOT OUR HOME… and that Jesus REALLY IS COMING BACK. The LAST WORDS OF JESUS are found in Revelation 22:20 BEHOLD I AM COMING SOON!! Hope you enjoy this Podcast about the final book of the Bible--REVELATION!
