Everyone should be free to be whoever they are - no matter how they identify. Nikki Kuhnhausen was someone who never struggled with her identity. She was confident in who she was and never apologized for it. But that wasn't Nikki's identifying characteristic. Nikki was a human being, just like all of us, just trying to make it through each day. She loved makeup and always fought for the underdog. And thanks to her mom, Nikki's legacy is knowing that the LGBTQ panic defense can't be used to justify murder or reinforce dangerous and incorrect stereotypes about the LGBTQ community. Nikki Kuhnhausen was born “Nicholas.” From a very young age her mother Lisa knew her son wasn't like the other boys at school. In 6th grade Nikki had the courage to come out, identifying as female. She embraced the person she truly felt she was, unapologetically. But when Nikki suddenly went missing from the Vancouver, WA area one day…it would be some time before anyone learned what had actually happened to the at-risk 17 year old… Written by Michael Dunphy Jr., Executive Produced by Michael Ojibway. In this episode, we both covered cases from 48 Hours. Did we plan for this to be a themed episode? Yes. Yes we did. We are professionals. Brandi starts us off, as she often does, with a story about a staircase. (No, not that staircase.) When Lana Clayton flagged down a passing motorcyclist, she said that her husband, Steve Clayton, had fallen down the stairs. She feared he was dead. When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they initially thought that Steve had died from a heart attack. But Lana's behavior indicated otherwise. Then Kristin tells us about Nikki Kuhnhausen. From a very early age, Nikki embraced her gender identity. As a pre-teen, Nikki boldly opted to be exactly who she was — a confident trans girl who aspired to become a makeup artist. But her dreams were cut short when she met a transphobic man named David Bogdanov. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: An episode of 48 hours, titled “The Life and Death of Nikki Kuhnhausen” The podcast, “Should be alive” In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “The Eye Drop Homicide” episode 48 Hours “Everyone's Favorite Uncle” episode American Monster “S.C. nurse who fatally poisoned husband with eye drops: "I just wanted him to suffer”” by Peter Van Sant, CBS News “Nurse Gets 25 Years For Fatally Poisoning Her Husband With Eye Drops” by Jill Sederstrom, Oxygen “Officials said he died in a fall. Nikki was never heard from again, and the main suspect in her disappearance skipped town immediately after she vanished. Please use caution when listening as this episode contains quotations of anti-trans language and descriptions of violence against transgender people. In Season 4 Episode 35 the girls tackle another listener suggestion and tell you about Hatecrime Murders. Holly starts with the sad story of Nikki Kuhnhausen before Mel tells you about the horrific murder of Matthew Shepard.Shoutout to Cheryl for this week's suggestion! Also Caitlin who is a quickly rising superfan and Natalie who Holly is ‘real life many years' friends with but has no recollection of HOW they became friends. Holly talks about her neverending flood curse, Mel talks about her neverending COVID curse, Holly is placed in a children's chair and Mel reads like an old lady. The girls also get very ranty.Production, recording and post production completed by Holly who is too busy plugging holes in her ceiling to beg Consulting Producer Craig for help…she simply sends photos of herself crying now. Holly edited this week. All complaints should be sent directly to Mel while Consulting Producer Craig slowly deletes the 76 photos he received from Holly. www.whichmurderer.comWARNING - Explicit language, content and themes (plus whatever else will cover us legally). Bryan and Erin address the great tragedy of the week: Judge Judy is leaving us (temporarily). Bryan discusses the passing of the Nikki Kuhnhausen Act in Washington state, outlawing the use of the “gay-panic” defense. Then, Erin talks about a story out of Utah in which a sixth-grade girl was not allowed to turn down a boy who asked her to dance at a school function, and the school's extraordinarily lame excuse as to why they force everyone to dance. And make sure to check out Deeper Shade of Shade on Stitcher Premium, where Bryan and Erin interview their favorite friends of the show.
