In this podcast series, we ask an artist who performed in one of the Evening of Performances to choose someone to be in conversation about collaboration, their respective practices and the future of performance. In this edition, DJ and producer, Nkisi, aka Melika Ngombe Kolongo, who was commissioned as part of the 2017 Evening of Performances, invited artist and choreographer Tiran Willemse, to chat about performance, their collaborations, and their most recent work (bb), which looks at the structures of support and maintenance from the theatre. This special edition of our 'On Togetherness' series is part of Recall: Evening of Performances (2008–2019), a year-long programme of interviews, podcasts and contributions from some of the artists who participated in the twelve editions of the celebrated Evening of Performances. This week I'm speaking with initiated Palo practitioner Jimmy, also known as "The Special Man," where we go into a lot of details related to this ancient African tradition of spirituality. We cover the metaphysics of Palo, what Jimmy does as a Nganga Nkisi, some of my own supernatural experiences in New Orleans, the afterlife and differences between ghosts, ancestors, nature spirits, and Nkisi spirits, the importance of community, the importance of natural balance, plus a whole lot more. This is a fascinating conversation that you wont want to miss. Ancestral Eyes E13 welcomes Sue Kuclick Arencibia, Olorisa y Yaya Nkisi, with your hosts Teresa Sliwinski and Jean-Jerome C. Baudry! Born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio on land that was Erie and Iroquois nations. Her ancestry is English, Irish, East Prussian and German, and fairly recent ancestors who were of Choanoke nation and Bantu. The East Prussians hail from a town called Jeziorany in Polish north of Olsztyn. Sue works as a mental health counsellor (licensed professional clinical counsellor) in the Central neighbourhood in Cleveland. Her practice is informed by her spirituality, by her initiations in Orisha and Palo. She comes from the viewpoint that there is constant interaction between what we think of as the physical and the spiritual, and what we think of as the living and the dead. It's her belief that everyone has chosen their own destiny, even if they are not aware of that destiny. She doesn't believe people choose bad destiny. She thinks people's Orí or head may or may not be in the best condition for a variety of reasons. Some can be fixed or remediated, and some conditions you have to work around, along with adversity in social conditions. That's counselling. She was initiated to Ọ̀ṣun since 1996 in Canton, Ohio, and Yaya Nkisi in Palo for about 2 years. Her godparents in Ocha are Baba Medahochi (Iba'e t'orun) and Iya Aboyade, who is now Iyanifa and is called Ifálola. Her Ojugbona is Barbara Barrett, Osunnikantomi Egbenihun. Her name in Ocha is Ọ̀ṣunmilaya which means Ò̩ṣún wife of Orunmila. She has received Iṣe'Fá (Hand of Orula) from Baba Wande Abimbola, Awise Ni Agbáyé. Her first ceremonies were done in Cleveland in the early 1990s when she received collares, Warriors and Olokun. Her house of Ocha at this time is headed by Manny Urquiola, Oloyuoba, of Spring Hill, Florida. She also has a working relationship with her husband's Padrino in Palma Soriano, Cuba. She has travelled to Cuba quite a few times and as a result, her Spanish speaking abilities are pretty good. We look forward to having you tune into our broadcast this Friday, July 17 @ 8 pm EST live right here on Ancestral Eyes on Facebook.
Happy Monday!!! Conversations with Friends Episode 24 is a conversation with 2 of my friends and sistren, Ally and Nkisi Piro. Ally, Nkisi and I met through mutual friends right after my family left the desert about 5 years ago. Due to the amazing abilities of connection that social media gifts us all, these ladies and I have kept in touch over the years and developed a natural bond regardless of time or space. When we returned to the desert last year, I was super excited to meet these souls in the flesh and continue to grow our bond. Today's episode is a conversation with both of my friends, so we get to hear a little bit about both Ally and Nkisi separately and as a couple. Individually, they are both studied and practiced energy and food healers and are committed to creating balanced and well lifestyles for their home and their community. As a team, they co-create some of the most beautiful meditative spaces I have been in (well I only got to visit once this last year, though I can now see clearly what they really got going on :) Using the ancient practice of sound healing through Yoga Nidra, these sistren have helped align many bodies throughout the valley. I asked Nikisi if she would be willing to share some of her healing energy with us on the show, so make sure you stay tuned after the 1st segment for a short and powerful sound meditation with Nkisi! These 2 women consciously inject the environment they are in with understanding, patience and love. I appreciate how their fire works together, pushing one another to never give up on achieving higher versions of self. I appreciate having their energy and support in my life and here with my family as we settle back into desert life. Many wonder who would move to a waterless, dry and hot place like the desert. Let me tell you, some really interesting and direct humans that wish to learn what sustainability and community is really all about. In the desert you need one another to make it through the extreme times. I am thankful my friends, that you 2 are a part of my team. Truly, the way in which you share your own path of self realization is needed in our community! Charging your work on sistren!!! Tune in to hear a dope convo between 3 women focused on healing. AND stay tuned for the meditation at the end of the episode! I almost fell asleep while recording!
