We speak of intergenerational transfer of knowledge in African traditions, and other important ideas in African cosmologies such as consubstantiation, ritual, story and song, and practices of divination. Dr. Butterfly shares his views on how African cosmologies can “help one rediscover ways in which one can be soulfully attached, reconnected, and participating in activities that enrich our lives, give them meaning, and restore value to kinds of relationships to each other.” Anthony “Butterfly” Williams, MFA, PhD, (we/us) is the Executive Director of Iruke Institute International. Dr. Butterfly is a cultural alchemist whose work manifests in performance art, community organizing, and transformative education. He is an expert on the decolonization of culture through the arts. Creativity, compassion and collaboration inspire the transformation of self and society that he calls “the work.” Dr. Butterfly is a thought leader who has presented papers, lectures, workshops and symposia on creativity, culture and spirituality in academic, professional and community settings, including the U.C. Berkeley School of Social Welfare, the American Psychological Association, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, among others. Dr. Butterfly is a community builder who has designed and produced arts-based community events on men's healing, African-centered psychology, creative leadership, police brutality, affordable housing and gay literature. His community-based collaborations include projects with Community Housing Partnership, Bayview Association for Youth, Center for Political Education, and Urban Healers, among others. Dr. Butterfly is a multimedia performance artist who has directed or acted in numerous theater productions, including original multimedia works about mass incarceration, Blaxploitation films, and the writer James Baldwin. He sings live in art galleries, where he exhibits music videos that feature his psychedelic art pop band OLOKUN.

These two together expand your conscious awareness, about your Self, the community and the planet. This is an Initiation and it is giving us all a chance to heal our own connection to God/Great Spirit or Source of your understanding. You are tremendously supported for initiating new spiritual practices that fortify you so that you are better able to serve on a grander scale or contribute in a larger way, to the social & collective realms just by living in integrity and staying connected to a Higher Power. The Shadow aspect of this energy is to be overwhelmed & confused so it is hard to move at all or we can be overly optimistic, ignoring facts & realities and not using our own discernment properly. We have to activate all our filters and boundaries with this one because both Jupiter & Neptune can get us all carried away, lost, off-track or worse, drowning in the Piscean Oceans of emotions and blurred lines. It is time to stay grounded and do not take unnecessary risks, with your faith or your resources. They often say you shouldn't meet people you admire because they may disappoint you. After over a decade of following slam poet, thespian, and organizer Mayda Del Valle's career and creative works, I have to say I was not disappointed. Despite being nervous to meet this Def Poetry Jam star, Mayda has a way of disarming you with her charm and contagious laughter. We spoke about her iconic poem, "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" which can be seen here, which is one of my favorite pieces from Mayda. We discussed her upbringing in Chicago, how hip-hop influenced her life, and the role that community organizing played in making her the storyteller that she is. Guest Bio: Poet and performer Mayda Del Valle has been described by the Chicago Sun Times as having “a way with words. Sometimes they seem to flutter and roll off her lips. Other times they burst forth like a comet streaking across a nighttime sky.” Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. She is the author of A South Side Girl's Guide to Love and Sex , The University of Hip Hop and was a winner of the 2016 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize from Northwestern University Press. She appeared on six episodes of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She began her artistic career at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was the 2001 Grand Slam Champion, and went on to become the National Poetry Slam Champion in the same year. She was the youngest poet, and the first Latinx person to do so. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. Oprah's “O” Magazine selected her as one of 20 women for the first ever “O Power List”, a group of visionary women making a mark in business, politics, and the arts. She has performed at venues across the world, including the White House in May of 2009, by invitation of President Obama and the First Lady. She has also served as a mentor and educator in the non-profit world, teaching poetry and performance to incarcerated youth. She currently works in the tech industry at Snap Inc. facilitating talking circles and developing curriculum to support company wide DEI initiatives that scale empathy and understanding. Mayda had also been a devoted student of various healing practices and African Traditional Religions. She is a third degree Reiki Master, and completed a two year Indigenous African Spiritual Technologies program with respected Dagara elder Malidoma Some. Soon after she was led into the ancient Yoruba spiritual tradition of Ifa. She was initiated into the mysteries of the ocean deity, Olokun in 2017. Her initiated name is Olokuntumise, which means “Olokun has repaired my life.” You can learn more about her by visiting: https://www.maydadelvalle.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Ancestral Eyes E13 welcomes Sue Kuclick Arencibia, Olorisa y Yaya Nkisi, with your hosts Teresa Sliwinski and Jean-Jerome C. Baudry! Born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio on land that was Erie and Iroquois nations. Her ancestry is English, Irish, East Prussian and German, and fairly recent ancestors who were of Choanoke nation and Bantu. The East Prussians hail from a town called Jeziorany in Polish north of Olsztyn. Sue works as a mental health counsellor (licensed professional clinical counsellor) in the Central neighbourhood in Cleveland. Her practice is informed by her spirituality, by her initiations in Orisha and Palo. She comes from the viewpoint that there is constant interaction between what we think of as the physical and the spiritual, and what we think of as the living and the dead. It's her belief that everyone has chosen their own destiny, even if they are not aware of that destiny. She doesn't believe people choose bad destiny. She thinks people's Orí or head may or may not be in the best condition for a variety of reasons. Some can be fixed or remediated, and some conditions you have to work around, along with adversity in social conditions. That's counselling. She was initiated to Ọ̀ṣun since 1996 in Canton, Ohio, and Yaya Nkisi in Palo for about 2 years. Her godparents in Ocha are Baba Medahochi (Iba'e t'orun) and Iya Aboyade, who is now Iyanifa and is called Ifálola. Her Ojugbona is Barbara Barrett, Osunnikantomi Egbenihun. Her name in Ocha is Ọ̀ṣunmilaya which means Ò̩ṣún wife of Orunmila. She has received Iṣe'Fá (Hand of Orula) from Baba Wande Abimbola, Awise Ni Agbáyé. Her first ceremonies were done in Cleveland in the early 1990s when she received collares, Warriors and Olokun. Her house of Ocha at this time is headed by Manny Urquiola, Oloyuoba, of Spring Hill, Florida. She also has a working relationship with her husband's Padrino in Palma Soriano, Cuba. She has travelled to Cuba quite a few times and as a result, her Spanish speaking abilities are pretty good. We look forward to having you tune into our broadcast this Friday, July 17 @ 8 pm EST live right here on Ancestral Eyes on Facebook.

I will be the best dad, and raise my children to positively dominate and be successful in society by use of their natural gifts and abilities. I will maintain superior physical, mental and spiritual health until I transition into the ancestral realm. I will be a retired Marine and enjoy all of the benefits that come with it. I AM the best poet in the world. I will continue to receive and deliver poetry to all listening spirits within the galaxy. My poetry will attain millions of dollars, and a mass amount of wealth for me and my family. Finally Revealed: Why I do not play at the Ocean I have always enjoyed the beach as a place to walk, soak up the sun for a minute, give praise and honor, and then I am usually ready to go. I went on a cruise once and it was the worst to be on the water with no land in sight. The water is a dark blue black and depressing. I was of course taught the horrors of the African Ancestors shipped from Africa to the Americas packed like sardines for months. But it wasn’t until recently that I came to grips with my true feelings about the Ocean. As I have gotten older I have looked at how I would like my body to rest once I transition. I settled in on cremation and to be deployed to the sea at a special Deep Sea Location. OMG…The Ocean Is A Cemetery!!! It’s a trail of bodies and bones from Africa to the Shores of the Americas! Nothing but bones! Now my feelings are explained: Why I could never feel at ease in the Ocean. Why I only like the ocean water touch my feet and ankles. Why I would choose it for my burial spot. As a spiritualist I looked further into the ancestral Ocean spirit. The African Spirit energy governing the Ocean is Olokun. Some will argue and say Yemonja but I am speaking of the deep Ocean, if you have ever been out there that ain’t Yemonja!!! Similar to Olokun who is said to be chained to the ocean floor our Maafa Ancestors were chained and many rest with their bones still in chains on the ocean floor. Therefore, Olokun is known as the patron energy of the descendants of Africans during the Maafa of mass kidnapping and enslavement who died in transit by various means: over board escape from bondage, murder, and sickness. The Maafa of racism and oppression continues for black people although the kidnapping from the Africa has ceased. To honor my ancestors who died during this atrocity of human trafficking is to give praise to the Ocean they rest in, to the spirit of transformation and the spirit of Death. Most energy works best in a trinity at minimum. Giving Olokun her praise was missing for me except the times when I visited the ocean or when I was floating on the deep ocean in misery. I have revised my Ancestor Prayer to Include Olokun! The Prayer is in Yoruba with Drum Bongos in background. This presentation focuses on various artistic traditions found in the Americas as a result of the African Diaspora. It will highlight two classroom art projects in which the postmodern art of installation is used to interpret the artistic and philosophical principles of several traditional religions that generate from the practices of Ifa, originally generated by the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria. These evolutions in faith, largely determined by the new experiences of an uprooted people, enjoy a vast pantheon of divinities, much like the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman religions. Oshun is a divinity associated with communication, love, inspiration, and creativity. The orisha, Olokun, was considered the great protector of the Yoruba people as they were forced on the slave ships leaving for their new world. Olokun is a figure that can be likened to the classical Poseidon – ruler of the deep blue sea and its inhabitants, provider of wealth and prosperity, but more importantly a healer for those in physical, psychological or spiritual distress. Some deities retained the “Olokun” signifier, while others absorbed this male entity within female entities (especially Yemaya of Cuban Santeria/Lucumi tradition and Yemoja in the Brazilian Candomble tradition). Both projects demonstrate how cross-cultural connections can be effectively experienced in the classroom, while maintaining relevance to student's own lives and culture.
