Full Episode Description It's been said that the environment affects your skin. We all know this to be true. However, do we need a special skincare routine or specific skincare products, other than sunscreen, to help reduce the effects of the environment on your skin? I did not think so; I did not want to add more products to my already over-flowing beauty cabinet. A recent experience led me to reconsider this question. A focus on civics - and a look at his new book - brings Don Woodstock back to TGCTS for Episode 48. There's lots of ideas, opinions and observations on tap!Part 1- Don was among the few Winnipeg residents who actually went to one of the city's "Information Sessions" about the five proposed sites for new supportive housing projects. With good reason, the Property and Development Committee adjourned the Public Hearing to get more details. As Woodstock explains, the fact his questions would not be answered by provincial representatives who would actually be making decisions about the site populations and service providers, was just one of many good reasons to hit the brakes rather than ram approval through. He insists that renovating and revamping existing buildings makes way more economic and administrative sense than handing over city-owned "surplus" properties whose value has never been measured on the open market.21.35 Part 2- Woodstock and his wife each have experience as Transit drivers. Hear why he thinks that the new plan for Community Safety Officers to handle fare enforcement is a smoke-and-mirrors charade to prop up the CSO program instead of hiring actual police. "They have no authority whatsoever."Between the ongoing safety issues and the disastrous new schedules and routing system, Woodstock says it's proof that City Hall doesn't listen to the public and has created dangerous conditions for folks who rely on riding a bus to get to and from work, school and social events. "The real conversation is how Uber has increased their ridership" as a result of people being stranded. 44.30 Part 3- Don Woodstock's new book "Unrelenting" is discussed. It's available at donwoodstockunrelenting.comHe tells his story about growing up in Jamaica, the influence of his grandfather, his commitment to environmental issues, and how he created the momentum for legislative changes to restrict the use of plastic shopping bags. He makes a pitch for ramping up manufacturing of electric buses while noting "the politics is so depressing" undercutting economic development and employment opportunities. "A welfare cheque is not an income, it's a tax on all of us. People need the capacity to earn a real income." *****Coming up on TGCTS- another interview with a candidate in the Elmwood- East Kildonan byelection. Four down, three to go!*****From the pages of the Winnipeg Sun- Marty Gold's most recent columns have continued to break news and stir up conversations:Sept 17- Considering that city councillors had just given voice to valid complaints that Transit officials were at the same busy labeling myths, a woman named A.M. drew the correct conclusion. “This is actually the weirdest, most manipulative document city hall has put out.”Riders push back as City plays ‘misinformation' card to dismiss Transit complaintsSept 21- It's becoming a pattern that when citizens raise their voices about Gillingham's policies and proposals, we're told those people don't matter- because they're repeating “misinformation”.Democracy proves inconvenient to Gillingham's plan for Supportive Housing sites Sept. 24- “I'm convinced that the real reason why progress is so slow,” said the source, “is because there is so much money to be made by doing absolutely nothing while congratulating yourself for how virtuous you are by protecting someone's "right" to ignore the rules the rest of society are obliged to respect.”Entitlement, poor results undermine trust in homelessness agency's success claims****Over $4200 raised in the Season Six funding drive- help us reach $5000 by donating here! In this episode, I answer a question from Juliet in Georgia about how to communicate effectively with parents during the initial parent consultation and ongoing 5-week consults. I break down what to share (and what not to), how to avoid clinical jargon, and why setting clear expectations is absolutely critical from the very first meeting. I also explain the difference between phases and stages of CCPT—and why we only share the phases with parents. You'll hear how to structure parent consults, preserve confidentiality, and respond to tough questions like “Why is my child regressing?” or “When will we be done?” Most importantly, I remind us all that parents are really just asking for reassurance, hope, and belief in the process—and we need to deliver that in every conversation. Too many salon owners focus on just one—but long-term success requires mastering both. You'll hear practical strategies, client experience tips, and marketing insights drawn straight from the Hello Hair Co. playbook, including how to create loyalty, inspire referrals, and consistently attract new faces without burning out.Key TakeawaysRetention and acquisition aren't either/or — both are essential for lasting salon growth.Consultations (and re-consultations) are the secret to keeping clients loyal.Hospitality and personalization turn good services into unforgettable experiences.Building staff confidence is a leader's job — and prevents overwhelm in new stylists.Smart marketing tools (Google Ads, SEO, automation, reviews, social media) keep new clients coming consistently.Focusing only on retention or only on acquisition will break your business model.Tracking the right KPIs (rebooking, client lifetime value, cost per new client, referrals) shows you what's really working.Episode Timestamps[00:00] – Intro & why Jen refused to kick things off[00:01:30] – Jen's opening take and quote of the week: Vidal Sassoon on why hairdressers are magical[00:03:00] – Todd's opening take, owner perspective: the happiness KPI[00:07:00] – Why retention matters: loyalty, consistency, referrals, and fun[00:11:00] – The consultation game changer: how to re-consult every visit[00:14:30] – Building relationships when your skills are still developing[00:15:00] – Hospitality Playbook: moving beyond snacks and water bottles[00:17:00] – Personalization & note-taking for unforgettable experiences[00:19:00] – Staff happiness and motivation = client happiness[00:21:00] – Helping “baby hair pros” build confidence without overwhelm[00:23:30] – Why acquisition matters: churn, plateaus, and growth[00:26:00] – Automated touchpoints: email & text marketing that works[00:28:30] – Google Ads, SEO, and why outsourcing marketing was a game-changer[00:33:00] – Social media strategy: faces > backs of heads[00:35:00] – Cross-promoting with local businesses & the power of reviews[00:37:00] – KPIs: client lifetime value, cost per client, rebooking, referrals[00:38:30] – Wrap-up + free Hospitality Playbook downloadResources & LinksSubscribe to the 321 Pro Push Newsletter: Real business lessons, strategies, and challenges delivered weekly.Listen to more episodes: the Hello Hair Pro podcastFollow us on Instagram: @hellohairproLinks and Stuff:Our Newsletter Mentoring InquiriesFind more of our things:InstagramHello Hair Pro Website

A new study is making waves in the bodybuilding community that hints that IFBB professional bodybuilding carries a higher risk of death compared to amateur bodybuilders. Almost 20,000 bodybuilders were followed for an average of 8 years. Results: 1 in every 167 bodybuilders had died and of those 46 deaths were related to sudden cardiac arrest. Their hearts stopped working suddenly, without warning. Among Mr. Olympia competitors, it was 1 out of every 20. What's the cause and are these results to be believed? Here's what you need to know. I was recently asked to contribute to an online article about after-sun care and managing sunburn. During the summer, and much of the year, we tend to focus on being in the sun and how to prevent sunburn and other forms of sun damage. Yes, prevention is key; but maintenance and vigilance are always easy to maintain, especially when you're out having fun at the beach. This episode reinforces guidelines for prevention and provides tips for after-sun care. I'll discuss my contribution to this article. Do you show up for every consultation with the same energy and level of service, no matter who's on the other side of the call? Most coaches treat consultations as a necessary step to getting paid, but they miss the opportunity to deliver one of the most valuable services they offer: the full experience of coaching. In this episode, I'm revisiting this important concept and breaking down why consultations should be viewed as a service, not just a sales call. When you approach consultations as a chance to truly serve your potential clients, regardless of their financial situation, you'll shift both your mindset and your business results. I'll share a conversation with a 2K for 2K student who almost wrote off a prospect based on financial assumptions, and how shifting into service energy completely changes the outcome. In this episode, I'll share why you should always give your best during consultations and how this mindset shift will serve you and your clients in the long run.
