What do The Simpsons, Dawn of the Dead and the Facebook page for Tom and Chal's former employer have in common? They're all overrun by zombies.Prompted by the publication of No Tags' first physical book, in this episode we return to our long-held worry about disappearing archives. As older platforms fade away, can we be bothered to start again with the latest social media fads? Will gated micro-communities be the saviour of underground scenes, or just a cul-de-sac? And what the hell happened to The Simpsons? We take a detour into the history of the zombie in folklore and popular culture for answers, before a speed run through films, tunes and extracurricular updates, from Predator and Wild Things to Scooter, Pa Salieu and Blumitsu live. You can pre-order No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture now. Come down to the free launch party at in Dalston on 3rd December with Kode9, Flo Dill and music from Jennifer Walton! Get full access to No Tags at notagspodcast.substack.com/subscribe
We trailed ‘big things coming' on our last episode, and would you look at that – the big thing has come. Or is available for pre-order, at least. That's right, it's our first ever book. Titled No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture and designed by All Purpose Studio, this hefty tome (350+ pages) compiles every interview to date on No Tags, edited transcripts of the best of Chal and Tom's non-guest conversations, and specially commissioned essays from four of our favourite writers and thinkers: Eris Drew, Chris Zaldua, Henry Bruce-Jones and Ray Philp. The book is available to pre-order now. We'll also be launching the book with our first live show in London on 3rd December, taking over Ridley Road Market Bar. On the night we've got Kode9 giving his new talk on Sonic Warfare for the first time in the UK, celebrating a new release of his seismic 2009 book about acoustic force and the ecology of fear. We'll also be recording a live episode of No Tags with everyone's favourite breakfast host Flo Dill, morning doyenne of NTS Radio. Plus we'll have music from Jennifer Walton – not only one of our favourite artists, but the wizard behind the No Tags theme tune. Entry is free, simply hit ‘Interested' on the event page. There is also a podcast this week. We introduce the book before getting into some of our favourite recent releases (The Cure, mediopicky, Dubbel Dutch and Toma Kami) and dissecting the long-awaited debut album by Two Shell. There's also some film chat (Lords of Dogtown, Kneecap, The Florida Project) and a debate over the key historical entries in the Florida Film canon. We are confident that No Tags is the only podcast where Toma Kami and Wild Things get discussed in the same breath – and if that doesn't count for something in 2024, what does? "I'm a noodler." The vaunted experimental producer and DJ discusses his playful approach to engaging with philosophy and making art live at Atonal's OPENLESS in Berlin. British artist Lee Gamble has long been captivating listeners with high concept dance music. A loyal affiliate of Kode9's Hyperdub label, Gamble—whose work sits somewhere at the intersection of philosophy, computer music and sound art—has been building weird and wonderful musical worlds that have shot him to experimental stardom since the early 2010s. In this RA Exchange recorded live from Hard Wax at the one-off event Atonal OPENLESS, Gamble meditates on his penchant for eschewing conventions, beginning with growing up in the countercultural, working class hub of Birmingham. Gamble reflects on the first time he experienced what's called "future shock," a reference to a book by the same name written by sci-fi author Alvin Toffler. This set him on the pursuit of finding and making music that had a similarly bizarre quality. Gamble isn't just a producer but an avid admirer and connoisseur of critical theory, and he also discusses the thinkers who have informed his production (and even his approach to DJing), as well as his recent interest in the ethics and applications of AI and deep fakes, which he explores in a touching full-length, Models. The Hyperdub label head and his head honcho team up and not for the first time. After Burial's recent extremely punishing EP, this is one of his most commercial sounding releases. Full of light skipping 2step beats and UK garage flourishes, plus a heap of hooky vocals and synths. Kode9 ably backs it up veering into early 90s rave and Drum n Bass. Undemanding but in a good way.

This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear more, become a patron at patreon.com/LoveMessagePod In this patrons-only episode Jeremy is once again flying solo on the podcast to explore the lives, ideas, and uses of the French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Starting in the intellectual hotbed of late-60s Paris, Jeremy explains who the pair were, how they met, what their shared - somewhat heterodox - philosophical canon was, and how this was expressed in their two-volume work Capitalism and Schizophrenia. Deleuze and Guattari are often seen as being very hard to comprehend, but Jeremy introduces us to concepts like schizoanalysis, deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation, the rhyzome, the refrain and the notorious body-without-organs in accessible and easy to digest language. Through the work of both the composers cited by the philosophers and a good deal of musicians who weren't, Jeremy shows how the radically materialist, non-dualist analysis of Deleuze and Guattari can help us understand how music works on us as listeners, with examples ranging from Messiaen to Keith Rowe and Kode9. Like countless others, Steve Goodman played a lot of video games during lockdown. At the time, the artist known as Kode9 and founder of the iconic Hyperdub label found himself imagining a game about Scotland and the country's plan to set up a colony in Panama back in the 1690s. Those thoughts later crystallised into Astro-Darien, an AV installation, "sonic fiction" and album that explores Scotland's space program and its past colonial ambitions through the lens of a video game. Speaking to RA on this week's episode of the Exchange, Goodman delves into the various facets of this project, including Escapology, his score to Astro-Darien. The album, released in July, is "like a film trailer that's giving you a little taste of various bits of story and strands of a kind of palette of sounds and a world," he explains. "So if you want, there's places to go deeper on it but if you are not interested in that, just treat it as a slightly weird dance music record." Science fiction aside, the Hyperdub founder also discusses the cyclical nature of music and why jungle is currently experiencing what many have called a revival. "Music doesn't move forward, it doesn't progress in a linear fashion," he describes, attributing that to "generational relationships." For more deep thoughts and Goodman's guide on hiking in the Scottish Highlands, listen to the conversation in full.

– Elisabeth Finyl Vinyl is an homage to record collections everywhere. As the saying goes, one is never the owner of a collection, only the temporary guardian. In that spirit the wealth will be shared. I have a never ending curiosity for what you are listening to, what the gems are in your collection, besides all of them. Plus I always want to hear one finyl song. Go on, play one more and tell me, where did you find this? When did you play this last? These and many more questions will get answered in this show with me and my illustrious fellow guardians of our favourite thing, vinyl. – Elisabeth

This podcast is led by DeForrest Brown Jr, author of Assembling a Black Counter Culture, in conversation with Steve Goodman (aka Kode9 and founder of Hyperdub) and Nkisi (co-founder of NON Worldwide). Collectively they discuss the migration of techno music from North America to Europe with an initial focus on the situated contexts of the dance music scene in London and across the U.K. during the early 1990s. With reference to techno's spiritual and technological origins, evolution, and relationship with the Hardcore Continuum movement. Techno at the End of the Future – Episode 1: London was produced by Zakia Sewell.
Around 1989, what were the promises of techno and its fictions? How are they significant today? And to whom? This episode is led by DeForrest Brown, Jr., author of Assembling a Black Counter Culture, in conversation with Steve Goodman (a.k.a. Kode9, founder of Hyperdub) and Nkisi (co-founder of Non Worldwide). Collectively they discuss the migration of techno music from North America to Europe with an initial focus on the situated contexts of the dance music scene in London and across the U.K. during the early 1990s. Around 1989, what were the promises of techno and its fictions? How are they significant today? And to whom? Episode 2 focuses on past, present and future of the Detroit-Berlin axis. By means of an interview collage, writer and Make Techno Black Again activist DeForrest Brown, Jr., Lerato Khathi aka Lakuti (founder of Uzuri Recordings and the Bring Down the Walls initiative), Boris Dolinski (resident DJ at Berghain) and Mark Ernestus (musician and founder of the Hard Wax record store) explore how the rapid growth of club culture in Germany after 1989 relates to techno's origins in the Black neighbourhoods of Detroit.

In this action-packed PlaguePod we present a series of readings from Audint—Unsound:Undead, plus some extra special additions from the Audint Crew and from Kode9, we invite listeners to call in to our brand new feature, the challenging dystopian adventure game CoronaQuest, and with guests Thomas Moynihan and Shaun Lewin we talk existential risk, Hydroplutonic Kernow, spinal catastrophism and, most crucially, lockdown snacking—tackling some fundamental questions: Which snacks are optimal for lockdown conditions? And is it possible to develop a definitive speculative ontological schema capable of encompassing the dynamism of the entire mouthfeel continuum? Lewin teams up with DJK Huysmans to drop some sucrose-laden snack tracks.

Next up in our series of recordings live from the booth is Lee Gamble. This one's from a steamy summer night in August during which we tipped our hats to essential UK label Hyperdub in celebration of their 15th birthday. In between a stellar opening b2b from local rave heroes Akanbi & DJ Temporary, and leading into a serious beatdown from label boss Kode9 (that started with Burial, nonetheless), Lee Gamble's set exemplified the wild-style, distinctly UK sound the label has been pioneering for well over a decade now. There's something in the air on special nights like these, and Gamble channeled it to his full advantage, resulting in a set that was nothing short of outrageous. It's a two hour rollercoaster through genre & tempo, spanning sub-destroying bass & grime, dubstep infusions, plenty of breaks and a hefty dose of freaky techno. Full of unpredictable twists and turns while always remaining highly danceable and exceptionally fun, Lee blew the roof off and the minds out with one of the most mental sets we've heard in our two years between the stacks. Big love to all steppers in the place for this one, to the Groovy Groovy crew for the support, to Lou for all the technical finesse and the Lee for the tunes.
On Friday 18th October, we host visionary producer Martyn for his NZ debut. We're pumped. In anticipation, this broadcast explores the wild nexus of dubstep and techno he contributed to between 2008 to 2012, all lovingly put together by Tom. This movement soundtracked everyone in the FP crew linking up, and the spirit of that sound - experimentation, hybridisation, fervour - is in the DNA of all we do. Plus it still sounds hype as fuck. One of the most crucial releases of 2017 was the Diggin' In The Carts compilation, a deep dive into Japanese video game music curated by Nick Dwyer and Kode9 and released on Hyperdub. We hounded Nick to jump on the show since the comp came out, and we're so stoked to finally air his guide to VGM. After that, we have a mix from Minneapolis-based DJ and producer TML, whose music draws the line between mid-western raves and UK soundsystem culture. His Machine Bias EP was just released last week on Hotflush, and we celebrate with a mix he recorded in the haze following a brief trip to NYC. *Nick Dwyer* [Composer / Game Title / Track Title / (Platform)] Shinji Hosoe - Bushido Blade - True Kannuki (Playstation) Junya Nakano - Dew Prism - Tsudoishi Monotachi (Playstation) Junya Nakano - Dew Prism - Microcosm (Playstation) Masashi Takada - Neko Zamurai - Kishi (Playstation) Shigenori Kamiya - Quackshot - Room 1 (Megadrive) ???? - ???? - ???? - ???? Hyperdub whiz Ikonika goes all in for mix #118, exclusively for Wild City. Sara Abdel-Hamid has been at the forefront of contemporary music worldwide ever since the release of her 2008 debut 12", 'Please/Simulacrum' via Kode9’s revered label Hyperdub. Like a lot of young producers making music in the mid and late 2000s, she was influenced by the dubstep and grime movements that were steadily taking over the UK at the time. It was the FWD and DMZ nights she attended that really shaped her earlier music. If you’ve been keeping up you’ll know that Ikonika’s sound has mutated and evolved over the years to include various forms of house, garage, UK funky, hip-hop and more. Those bright, metallic synths, 8-bit influences and fat, bubbling basslines that we love Ikonika for never really went away though, and we’re glad for it. Ikonika steps it up a few levels, energy wise, for mix #118. You know this is going to be a banger from the get-go, and if this is what’s in store this week for her India tour - we can’t wait. Kicking things off with Geko and Ard Ardz’s ‘Khalas’, Ikonika seamlessly blends a vigorous selection of tunes that spans everything from Jam City to Lil’ Kim and Britney. There’s also a fair amount of Ikonika’s own production peppered in there, so it’s a proper treat. Don’t even try getting out of this one - you’re already in too deep. The RA Podcast turns 400 with a master of innovation.
From Berlin, Germany we're pleased to welcome the lovely Sarah Farina to The Armory. Press play. Get down. Over the last couple of years, Sarah Farina has become one of Berlin's main taste-makers in underground bass. Sarah is well recognized throughout Germany and noticed by artists and music heads on each and every continent. Her sets are driven forward through futuristic break-beats and intense bass lines. Not sticking to any specific genre, she defines the music she plays as ‘Rainbowbass'. Sarah Farina is one of the original founders of Through My Speakers, which became a record label in 2014, after being a collective and event production crew since 2010. Over the last years she supported some of the most respected of her bass music contemporaries, both locally and abroad. She contributed to Rinse.fm's Hyperdub show with Kode9 and Scratcha DVA in London 2013 and shared the DJ booth with artists like Loefah, Disclosure, Gaslampkiller, Lunice and many many more. Being connected with crews like Teklife (RIP DJ Rashad), Buraka Som Sistema, Exit Records and similar, her network is large and constantly growing. Her two contributions to Boiler Room Berlin in 2013 and 2014 were well received by BR's usually discriminating audience and paved her way even more for promising gigs in the future. The Specials' 'Ghost Town' became the soundtrack to the 1981 Brixton riots. Thirty years on, its message of disaffection remains relevant, says David Honigmann. Credits: Chrysalis Records Ltd, Hyperdub, Tru Thoughts. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Shock World Service 059 Old Acquaintance Be Forgot by Cian Ó Cíobháin 24/12/2014 Galway, Ireland 1. Mica Levi - Lonely Void Mica Levi's soundtrack for Jonathan Glazer's film ‘Under The Skin' (based on Michel Faber's novel) was, without doubt, the oddest yet most beguiling music I heard all year. I had listened to the soundtrack loads before I finally got to see the movie. Listening to the music out of context had made an impression, finally hearing it as I viewed the film almost made me want to start a cult. 2. Kode9 & The Spaceape - Autumn Has Come The ‘Killing EP' was the last release from Hyperdub vocalist-poet-MC Stephen Samuel Gordon AKA The Spaceape before his untimely demise in the autumn. His parting words “I must learn to dance with life again while autumn is still here” are particularly heartbreaking considering he passed away soon after the recording was made. 3. Visonia & Dopplereffekt - Die Reisen This track should be employed by music teachers in classes to illustrate ‘how to write a bass arpeggio'. A big thanks to Laura O' Connell for putting me onto this one. Released on Last Known Trajectory in January, this should still sound fresh in decades to come. 4. Clark - Snowbird Chris Clark has been a formidable presence on the legendary Warp label for over a decade now. His eponymously titled 2014 LP is rumoured to be his last. If there is any substance to these rumours, it is safe to acknowledge that he refused to go out with a whimper with possibly his most coherent LP to date. 5. Roberto Clementi - Agile The Italian's debut LP for Soma - 'N Lights' - took a slightly organic and dubby approach to electronic music. This one was the diamond in the rough: an ethereal and glistening piece of electronica that has shades of Burial or The Cyclist about it. 6. Actress - Gaze His latest LP ‘Ghettoville' may not be up there with his finest work, but it did bestow upon the world this gorgeous slice of dreamy house. 7. JAW, Philip Wolgast & Benito W - Papersand Is JAW the new Robert Owens? The frontman of electronic French act dOP's voice can be heard lighting up many a house tracks these days. I've never really been a fan of Robert Owens, bar a handful of tracks, though I've slowly began to warm to JAW. However, something about this collaboration - the production and the wistful vocal - made it sounds like a more melancholic take on what Ali Love & Hot Natured have been getting up to. One to slow dance to at the end of a lost weekend. From the ‘Midtown EP' on Circus Company. 8. To Rococo Rot - Baritone Veterans of the German electro-acoustic scene released their eighth studio LP ‘Instrument' this year which included this track, redolent of classic mid-90s Tortoise. 9. Fhloston Paradigm - Never Defeated (feat. Rachel Claudio) King Britt - under his Fhloston Paradigm guise - produced one of the most memorable LPs of the year in ‘The Phoenix' and this collaboration with Rachel Claudio is the kind of gritty soul I subscribe to. 10. Ariel Pink - Lipstick Ariel Pink's new LP ‘Pom Pom' is a riot of ideas. Like an enterprising magpie, he swoops over many different genres and eras and steals the best parts to create a new and vibrant love letter to both AM & FM bubblegum pop. 11. Aphex Twin - PAPAT4 [155] [pineal mix] A period of two weeks listening to Aphex Twin's first LP in 13 years confirmed this and the ‘minipops' single to be my personal highlights. Shock World Service 037 The Ideal Correspondence by Jon Averill 17/09/10 London, United Kingdom. 1. Harry Partch - I'm Going To Start You Off By Giving You Some Sounds Harry Partch is an American composer & the first of three of this show's featured musicians who designed & created many of their own instruments. He was was fascinated buy microtonality, creating his own 43-tone scale system. 2. Piano Magic - Exit Just realised our first track proper is called 'Exit', that's not important. Piano Magic have featured previously on the World Service yet they're somehow still criminally ignored. Their most recent album 'Ovations' is most definitely worth a listen. It features contributions by Brendan Perry & Peter Ulrich of Dead Can Dance. Also for some reason this track reminds of the XX, which in turn reminds me of Chris Issak's 'Wicked Games'. 3. Lusine - Gravity Lusine is based in Seattle & releases his music through the very decent Ghostly International label. Occasionally I worry he is drifting too far into the arena of the coffee table but his productions are in the main too good to collapse into the placid zone. 4. 2562 - Greyscale 2562 is a Dutch producer who loosely falls into the category of dubstep. I generally despise most of the cliched 'wobble' stuff but if you look a little deeper than you'll find that some of the most exciting electronic music is happening around the fringes of the scene. 5. LV - Turnaway Another impressively spacious LV track on the Hyperdub label (home to Burial, Kode9, Zomby) mixing dub, reggae & broken beat. The 'Five Years of Hyperdub' compilation is an extensive but accessible entry point. 6. Dubbel Dutch - Fool In You Again on the fringes different styles, UK funky, garage & broken beat - its looping vocal and blasting synths are also a big nod (& maybe a little wink) to early rave productions which are a big influence on this genre. 7. Acid Brass - Lets Get Brutal Acid Brass is an album of rave/techno classics conceived by Turner-Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller & executed by The Williams Fairey Brass Band. As with these types of projects some of the tracks fall flat but a scant few of them were worth the toil and serve to enhance the musicality of the originals. This version of Nitro Delux's 'Lets Get Brutal' is the worthiest track from the album. 8. Lucky Dragons - Open Melody 'Art-drone' duo Lucky Dragons have crept up on me to become one of my favourite bands, creating their own inimitable pallet of repeating noises drones & twisting them into something really beautiful. They've recorded 21 albums since 1999 apparently. This is from their most recent 'Rara Speaks'. 9. Quincy Jones - Exodus The closest thing to jazz we've had on the World Service. Quincy Jones is a man who is as near to the status of a god as a mortal can hope for. He's worked as a trumpet player, musical arranger, film composer, television producer, has 79 Grammy nominations to his name. 10. Yamasuki Singers - Yama Yama The booklet for this cd says 'educational-bubblegum-multi-cultural-psycho-rock-opera' & anything I offer beyond that will be valueless. 11. The Upsetters - Tight Spot The fabulous Upsetters with the even more fabulous Lee Scratch Perry at the controls. 12. Library Tapes - Terese Scratchy soliloquy from Library Tapes 'Like Green Grass Against A Blue Sky' album. 13. Top Drawer - Song Of A Sinner We finish this podcast with a redemptive psychedelic triumph. I'd never heard of Top Drawer until his track was made available on a compilation entitled 'Forge Your Own Chains: Heavy Psychedelic Ballads & Dirges'.
This is the first episode recorded in our newly renovated Sells Studio space. Things got under way with some new dubstep releases from Falty DL, The Others, Joker & TC, Guido, and Mount Kimbie. After slowing things down a bit, the mix turned towards new tracks from Hyperdub boss Kode9 and roster mates Ill Blu, […]

Japanese musician Quarta330, promoter of Tokyo's Lo-Bit Playground party, twisted plenty of heads on the dubstep scene last year with his immense 8-bit refix of Kode9's towering 9 Samurai track. He recently performed at Tokyo's Back To Chill night alongside other Japanese artists such as Goth Trad and T2R, armed with nothing more than two Game Boys, an interface and some effects pedals. Hosted both here and on Laurent Fintoni's blog, the set has a few jumpy levels and even a little technical down-time midway through; but don't let that put you off — along with the essential styles currently blasting out of the Jahtari camp, this really is some of the heaviest, most off-the-hook 8-bit music out there at the moment. No tracklisting. ^ More recordings from Back To Chill's end of year party can be found here.
The final episode of the current Blogariddims series. Paul Autonomic presents 'Moving South,' an Ableton mix of up-style beats from the pioneers of the mutant groove. Full tracklisting and notes can be found at http://www.deeptime.net/blog/?p=136
