We're back for our November monthly episode and so far it's been a quiet off-season for the Orlando Pride. However, business should be picking up soon and just within the last week there has been plenty of news to chew on. The Pride made a couple of trades to stay safe during the upcoming NWSL Expansion Draft. We break down what Orlando sent to Bay FC and the Utah Royals, including draft picks and one regular player from the lineup, and it looks like the club is compiling Allocation Money again, which can only be a good thing. The club sent a clear message that management and the coaching staff are confident in the way the roster is shaping up and they don't want to see anyone plucked away, only to develop for a new team. It will be interesting to see how that pays off. We had some good questions in our mailbagbox, aksing about the prospects of the Pride's free agents returning for 2024 as well as the likelihood of whether Orlando will be going after one particular well-known free agent. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Finally, we discussed the Pride's end-of-season roster announcements to let you know which players are seemingly gone, which have had their options picked up, and more. The club has recently done a good job of locking up players across multiple years, so there was not as much to get done this off-season, but it will be interesting to see which free agents the club can lure to Orlando to get Seb Hines' team over the top. Here's how Episode 30 went down: 0:15 – The Orlando Pride won't have any players plucked from their roster in this year's NWSL Expansion Draft. Here's why. 9:30 – Mailbagbox time! We answer our listeners' questions. 19:45 – A look at the Pride's off-season roster decisions and pending free agents.
Today's conversation was one of emotional highs and lows as our hosts unpack the drama and trauma of the NWSL Expansion Draft. In this episode, Tobin and Christen discuss the heartbreaking yet hopeful realities of playing in the American sports market. Christen dives into the topic of treating players like human beings, while Tobin gets personal and takes us through her experience with the expansion draft.Want to hear how this episode's community questions segment got rebranded into Community Questions Gone Wrong? The off-season is officially underway for the Orlando Pride. The 2023 season was a surprisingly positive one for a team that we frankly didn't expect that much out of before the NWSL kicked off in the spring. The fact that Seb Hines got this team to Decision Day in contention for a playoff spot and the Pride finished tied for fifth is a huge step in the right direction. But now that 2023 is over, what happens next? Orlando will be looking to upgrade the team's roster for the 2024 season and we'll know soon(ish) which out-of-contract players will be brought back. As we do every year, we dedicated a show (this one, in fact) to dissecting the team's roster as it stood at the end of the season. We discuss the contract status of each player and try to predict which ones will be back with the Pride in 2024 and which ones the club will allow to explore their options elsewhere. In addition to trying to figure out which players will be back, we also look ahead to the NWSL Expansion Draft to try to forecast who might be made available for selection by the league's newest teams. We did look in our mailbagbox (where you can ask us anything every week), but nothing was inside. That made Dave sad. Please don't make Dave sad. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Here's how Episode 29 went down: 0:15 – Player by player, we discuss the known contract status of each Pride player and try to predict if they'll be kept, let go, or left unprotected for the NWSL Expansion Draft. (That's it. That's the whole show!)
The Orlando Pride needed to have some things go their way to get into the postseason but could only control one of those things — getting a home result against the goal-stingy Houston Dash. The Pride did their part, despite leaving it late, beating Houston 1-0 on Decision Day to put themselves in the right position. Unfortunately, results around the league went awry on multiple fronts and the 2023 Orlando Pride season is over. At least the team went out with a win. We looked back at the Pride's final match of 2023 and checked our score predictions to see how we did. We also made our selections for Player of the Match and we were unanimous to close out the year. Beyond that, we gave our thoughts on the job Seb Hines and his outstanding staff did throughout the 2023 campaign. This week's mailbagbox asked us about Emily Madril's Iron Woman bid, which players the club may protect in the NWSL Expansion Draft, and more. There's also way more talk about lazy rivers than I expected. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Finally, we looked back at the Pride's season game by game, hitting the lowlights and highlights at how Orlando ended up at 10-11-1 and missing the postseason by only the slimmest of margins, despite taking their pound of flesh from all of the league's contenders along the way. Here's how Episode 28 went down: 0:15 – The Pride did their job and got the win they needed, even if other results prevented it from being a truly special day in club history. 23:46 – Our mailbagbox asks us some solid questions. We love solid questions (and we love the mailbagbox!). 46:56 - A walk through the ups and downs of the Pride's 2023 season and so many of the "what if?" moments that prevented a playoff appearance.

The Orlando Pride had a busy week with an Expansion Draft, a regular draft, and multiple trades, including the long-awaited details on Alex Morgan's move to San Diego. We break down the former Pride players selected by expansion Angel City, the trades related to the NWSL Expansion Draft, the details of the Morgan deal, and we go pick by pick through the draft day happenings. Pride GM Ian Fleming and new Orlando Head Coach Amanda Cromwell had a lot going on in the last couple of weeks. Orlando City fans now know the fate of two midfielders who were in negotiations following the roster announcements at the start of this month. Mauricio Pereyra is back in the fold for another year, while Uri Rosell is heading back to Sporting Kansas City after not re-signing with Orlando. We also go into the 2022 schedule drop and point out some of the quirks and details. We also briefly touched on a pretty boring United States Men's National Team friendly victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina to close out the 2021 schedule. This week's mailbag asked about the upcoming World Cup and the USMNT's chances in it, as well as whether Daryl Dike will be in the mix at striker for Gregg Berhalter. There were also questions about the Orlando City schedule for next year and whether we'd like to see the Lions play everyone. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 276 went down: 0:15 - A crazy week for the Pride, the loss of a center back and a goalkeeper, the addition of a bunch of young forwards, and more. 33:56 - The Lions re-signed a Uruguayan midfielder and lost a Spanish midfielder. Here's what it means for the Lions and we dive into the 2022 schedule. 1:00:37 - Mailbag time! I give a percentile dice roll for a Daryl Dike key role in the next World Cup, and we talk scheduling again. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The NWSL Expansion Draft and the 2022 NWSL College Draft delivered some big trades and major surprises, along with controversy as well. I guess you could say there was a little bit of everything. Rachael Kriger joins Sean and Erik to discuss the big happenings, the trades, some of the players drafted, and also the controversy that ensued afterward involving the Portland Thorns as well. Not to mention, the news of NWSL now taking on United States Women's National Team salaries and the NWSL schedule framework too. Major League Soccer also ushered in a new team in Charlotte FC and they had an Expansion Draft as well, although trades made it to where they actually wound up only picking three players ultimately. But on the bright side, a largely MLS-based squad helped the United States Men's National Team get to 17 wins on the year with a 1-0 over Bosnia Herzegovina. Although the game wasn't much to talk about, Jordan Morris certainly had some nice moments at least. Also, USMNT players could be on the move in the January Transfer Window with Barcelona looking to move Serginio Dest, but actually want Christian Pulisic? Would it be a good fit for him in Barcelona? What about Ricardo Pepi at Atletico Madrid? And could Weston McKennie join Tottenham too?

The trades are done (for now, sort of) and Meg and Steph immediately hopped on Zoom to react to the protected and unprotected lists for the upcoming NWSL Expansion Draft as soon as they dropped on Friday. Real-time reactions, ruminating about the nature of the draft itself, plus some suggestions on additional programming for the broadcast — just tossing this out here, but if you're going to put retired players on the list, then we deserve a NWSL retired player combine. The NWSL trade tracker (free to read): https://theathletic.com/live-blogs/nwsl-trade-tracker-sam-mewis-to-kc-current-sarah-gorden-and-julie-ertz-to-angel-city-and-more/DQSpUFTtvqRa/The protected/unprotected lists: https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/nwsl-releases-protected-lists-ahead-of-2022-nwsl-expansion-draft-presented-by-ally Hosted on Acast. Anti-Black technical difficulties couldn't stop us! We sat down for the second time this week and STILL had plenty to say, plus we added some new topics cause the news, football, drama, and as Ben Olsen would call it, "noise", never stops! Courtney & André start the pod with a review of European national squads, key matches and top performers, plus we ask the question 'Is Catarina Macario good?'. Then we jump to the NWSL to run through scores, highlight some performances, and Courtney breaks down Gotham's attack with and without Midge (hint: MidgeVP)! Then after a break we get into the mess. We talk about how messy the NWSL Expansion Draft will likely be, then we turn to the absolute mess that is the Washington Spirit and that Ben Olsen interview. We wrap up by discussing the massive L that didn't need to be an L, the announcement of a 9am kickoff for the league's penultimate match, and the international dragging that ensued. We offer some solutions and, again, hope the league is listening. Then we roll into Heated & Hyped, where Courtney has some words for Mr. Serena Williams and André is hype about two young tennis stars killin it at the U.S. Open.
