This fall, the pastors at Fellowship Denver led our church family through six sermons examining what we want to do (our mission), who we want to be (our values), and what we long to see God do (our vision). Jesus defined the mission of his church in Matthew 28 in a statement often called “the great commission.” Our way of restating our public mission, as given to us by Jesus, is “We help people discover and follow the original Jesus.” In today's episode, Hunter and Autumn reflect on the recent sermon series, Fellowship Denver's mission, and the bridge graphic we use to explain the locus of the church between the kingdom of God and the world. The bridge graphic displays six pillars:1. Contend & Contextualize2. Doctrine & Life3. Scripture & Orthodoxy4. Words & Deeds5. Transformation & Grace6. Personal Faith & Church

REPLAY: This episode has been previously aired. Education is the scaffolding around which students can build a successful life. However, students and young people often don't see the big picture. Educators, particularly in the CTE space, need to connect students' experiences more explicitly with relevant job roles and future career pathways. But how do you open your students' eyes to the skills they have and the future jobs they can pursue? Offering context and integrating your classroom with the workforce is crucial.  In this episode, we were privileged to discuss skills contextualization with Dr. Krystal Rawls. Dr. Rawls is the designer of the Workforce Integration Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Building on a foundation of theoretically sound and data-driven practices, Rawls endeavors to create transparency and equity in workforce development programming to develop a more diverse, digitally competent, and skilled class of worker. Dr. Rawls draws on herd transdisciplinary background in Education, Psychology, and Business to inform her innovative approach to empowering students to take their place in the modern workforce.  Using labor market information to identify the skills needs of employers and curriculum data to evidence skills developed in the academic experience, Krystal creates community through skill-based language.  In her role as an analyst and faculty member, Krystal gets to indulge her passion for building opportunities and relationships that are beneficial to the student, educator/worker, as well as industry and community partners.  Dr. Rawls welcomes opportunities to create meaningful workforce partnerships and develop pathways for positive economic outcomes for all. With Dr. Rawls we discussed how to help students contextualize and understand their skillset, and how to let go in the classroom, and create authentic learning experiences. With context, your students will see that they're not “just” students, but professionals in training.  Dr. Rawls mentioned some incredible resources to continue your learning. Truth Fairy appears solo for this special episode in conversation with guests James Clifton, former Lead Facilitator, and Daan Keiman, former Lead Facilitator and Director of Program and Product Development, of the Synthesis Institute. This conversation aims to shed more light on the recent headlines surrounding the termination of employees and contractors by Synthesis as reported recently in psychedelic outlets like Lucid News.James Clifton and Daan Keiman introduce themselves and get in depth about their own stories of how they came to psychedelic therapy and the formational time period in discussion with Martijn Schirp. They each give much-needed context to discussions about Synthesis - its origins, how the retreats came together, the thought and care put into the approach. They also note when some tensions started and what was behind the tension. Truth Fairy leads a very probing and insightful conversation with James and Daan in which they explore the truths and requirements for working with psychedelics, how the attitude of potential clients changed after the release of “How to Change Your Mind” by Michael Pollan, the complexities with diverse practitioners and educational considerations the leadership team constantly considered as Synthesis grew, and the challenge of balancing psychedelic reality against capitalist needs. James and Daan give context and meaning to the headlines, unpacking the impetus behind Synthesis and truths of its journey.   “I think this may be something that I want to emphasize, because in a lot of what has been published, this is a perspective that is missing, it is that the leadership team itself struggled with the complexity. They had this monumental task ahead of them of bringing together this very diverse group of practitioners with their own perspectives on how to do this work, of navigating all these legal challenges, not to mention all the financial constraints and financial commitments that they made to investors, and to then ride this wave of this massive hype that started to started to emerge. I think it's within that sort of vast growing field - adding a corona pandemic that locked everything down and that required the organization to really make a radical shift in orienting themselves now towards the practitioner training - there's this challenge that comes with both asking yourself as an organization, who are we and what do we do and what do we offer as services.” - Daan KeimanAbout James Clifton:James Clifton has been a guide and ally for hundreds of individuals and groups in a variety of complex settings and environments, including hospice care, conflict zones and navigating non-ordinary states and realms of consciousness in psychedelic spaces for over 35 years. As a clinically trained, trauma and integrally informed psychotherapist, he works in professional practice with individuals and their direct experiences that come with all the varieties that an extra-ordinary state demands and as it unfolds. He was part of the core faculty and also retreat team lead at the Synthesis institute from 2019. He continues to consult internationally, advise, lead, supervise and support developing teams and organizations committed to the best emergent practices in psychedelic care.He lives mostly in the UK on the South Coast and sometimes you'll find him in the wilds of the South West Coast of Cornwall.About Daan Keiman:Daan holds an MA in Spiritual Care and is the co-founder of Guild of Guides Netherlands: an organization that seeks to professionalize psychedelic sitting services. His experience with guiding and caring for people in altered states of consciousness spans over a decade; ranging from psychedelic harm reduction work on festivals to his private practice as a Psychedelic Chaplain.Daan draws from his personal Buddhist practices, psychedelic research and his professional experiences to create compassionate and powerful containers for personal and relational transformation. As an avid explorer of consciousness, he is highly capable of supporting others who are traversing the landscapes of the mind.Resources discussed in this episode:“Synthesis Founder Confirms Bankruptcy of Dutch Sister Company” by Joseph Gallivan for Lucid News March 20, 2023Synthesis website“How to Change Your Mind” by Michael PollanBayo Akomolafe---Punk Therapy: website |emailDr. T: email  |  Truth Fairy: email

Wherever you go in the world, there is bound to be some degree of turmoil and negativity. So how do you stay motivated and inspired amidst it all? In today's episode of the Be Better Podcast, Donald is joined by the CEO (Chief Energy Officer) of LLJR Enterprises, Larry Long Jr., to learn how he maintains positivity and works toward a better future.  Shaping a positive perspective: While Larry believes he was partially born positive, it still takes practice. His father grew up in Baltimore surrounded by danger, but he made it a point to be positive, a value he later instilled in Larry.   It doesn't matter your circumstance; you can create something with the right attitude and a fresh perspective. The limiting belief you tell yourself is often worse than it is. So don't hold yourself back.  Finding your inner story: Don't worry about setting realistic goals, because you inherently set limiting beliefs on the goals you set. Dream big, and then dream bigger. Then, write that dream down and take action to make it happen. Handling strikeouts: Contextualize failures as moments of growth. Instead of letting those failures be points of negativity, figure out how to take the next best step.  Have the perspective that you'll live, learn, laugh, love, and enjoy the growth process. The basics to staying consistent: You are what you consume. Take audit of the people around you; you want them to be people who push themselves to be better. If you aren't giving your all in everything you do, ask yourself what you can do next. Larry's three-minute challenge: Pick someone from your contact list and take three minutes to find something that will surprise and delight them. The goal isn't to ask for something - it's to bring happiness to the people around you.  Larry's advice to his young self? Learn the power of persistence and perseverance; if you can learn their importance, you'll set yourself up for long-term success. Dr. Rawls draws on her transdisciplinary background in Education, Psychology, and Business to inform her innovative approach to empowering students to take their place in the modern workforce. We contextualize the Invasion of Ukraine by Russia, both myself and Bruce have been speaking of this potential crisis since 2014, we are both long time peace advocates and believe that peace only comes through mutual understanding and the events that got us here. How the more you listen to the MSM the more confused and uninformed you become. We speak about the US back coup in 2014 replacing a pro Russian president with a US puppet, how the coup government of Ukraine has a coalition with Neo-Nazis who terrorize the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine which is largely make up of Russian speakers, how thousands of Russian speaking citizens have been killed in this region without any condemnation from the UN or Western Media. How the Minsk agreement with the current president has never been honoured, and how the US is pushing Ukraine to join NATO like Poland and Romania. This is untenable to Russia as they don't want missile bases on their borders. How the long term goals for Russia are spelled out by the Rand Corporation called "Overextending and Unbalancing Russia" (available online) And most importantly some reasonable options to end this conflict. I was drawn to my guest today immediately because of a powerful post, she wrote about why she doesn't identify with the label of being an alcoholic.  I don't identify as an alcoholic either. I don't feel like that label serves me or explains my personal experience and unless they prefer it I don't use that label to describe the women I work with.   Here's what Beth wrote that spoke to me.  ✨WORDS MATTER✨ The other day, someone called me an “alcoholic.” They were just making conversation, talking about things I'm interested in (which I super appreciate!)…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... but I don't identify as an alcoholic—it's a label that doesn't explain my personal experience with leaving behind the booze. I don't struggle with not-drinking anymore. I don't feel like I'm powerless over alcohol. I don't align with the 12-steps. I don't personally identify with the disease model of addiction.⠀⠀⠀ Even when I was still drinking, the black and white dichotomy of either being someone who drank or being an “alcoholic” kept me drinking longer than I should have. I thought those were my only choices And then I discovered this beautiful corner of the internet full of people who don't drink alcohol, who call themselves all sorts of things: ✨Teetotaler ✨Sober ✨Alcohol-free/AF ✨Non-drinker ✨Sober-curious⠀⠀⠀ Or… nothing at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've learned a few things from my experience: 1️⃣ Words matter, and labels can be a significant barrier for folks removing harmful habits from their lives. Was it the "last, horrible and violent, dying gasp of an old, white supremacist racial order in the US", or the death of democracy? Håvard Nygård was shocked and horrified on January 6, but he says that as a researcher he still has hope. That day a mob stormed the US Capitol just as Congress was formalizing Biden's presidential victory. Sirianne Dahlum (PRIO, UiO) and Håvard (PRIO) bring their expertise to a discussion of what this attack means for the US, and how we can define and interpret it (what is a coup anyway?).You can find the Twitter thread Håvard refers to here: https://twitter.com/owasow/status/1348397526790139905

Welcome to another episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast! Here's an episode for everyone who needs a pick-me-up, a detox, or an upper after a slump they've gone through or, maybe, still going through. Today, Rob shares tips on how to shoo away the habit of beating yourself up by labelling and stereotyping. Listen as he discusses the techniques and benefits of having to label yourself with optimism and clarity. When you know what to do, you'll be winning and solving problems in no time even when you're going through a rough patch.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Be careful of what you label yourself. If you've associated your identity with something, it's hard to come back from it. I've hit the brick wall… I'm sinking… There's a huge weight on my shoulders… I've got impostor syndrome… NONE of these are real (unless you make it real)! You're just going through some challenges. Don't own it. Breathe and understand that it just didn't go right this moment and things can be different. If you want to label yourself, say these instead: I am a winner! I defeat challenges! I am a creator! I am a solver of problems! Empower yourself. The things you say to yourself when you experience high confidence SHOULD BE the same things you say to yourself when you lack confidence. If you're going to talk yourself down, make sure to talk yourself up. Whoever you say you are, if you own these things, you're going to win and solve your problems. If things happen frequently, disassociate yourself from the individual event. Contextualize what happened. Remember that every new day is a new opportunity. You can try focusing on something more productive. BEST MOMENTS "You are taking individual things that happened and then, lumping them in an entire meaning and then holding an identity of them in your life. That's dangerous. That's not fair!" "You are not a failure, you just didn't get one thing right." “People who fail the most often succeed the most." "Remember that every new day is a new opportunity. Remember that every master was once a disaster and every winner was once a beginner." Session 105 ATP, blood vessels, fat stores and beta decay are the topics we cover in the next set of discrete questions from Next Step Test Prep Full-length 10. We are once again joined by Bryan Schnedeker from . Also check out all our other podcasts on . [01:33] Question 44: Fat Molecules Fats are stored in adipose tissues primarily as: (A) Fatty acids (B) Chylomicrons (C) Glycerol (D) Triacylglycerols Bryan's Insights: The correct answer here is D. Glycerol is the three-carbon backbone and fatty acids are the little tails that get tagged onto the glycerol. So a glycerol backbone plus three fatty acids make up a full classic E-shaped triacylglycerol or just just fat molecule. Chylomicrons are the little clumpy bits that are used to transport fatty acids throughout the blood. [03:27] Question 45: Aorta vs. Capillaries Within the body, which of the following blood vessels is expected to have the greatest total cross-sectional area and the lowest fluid velocity? (A) Aorta (B) Arterioles (C) Capillaries (D) Vena cava Bryan's Insights: The word total is key here. And the answer here is C. There are tens of thousands of capillaries for every arteriole, much less for the aorta and vena cava in the body. The question also says lowest fluid velocity. The blood in the aorta and the arterioles is just rushing along because of all that pressure from the heart. So it's in the capillaries that the blood flows the slowest that it almost comes to a standstill so that your oxygen and carbon dioxide can get exchanged. If you're not reading this question very carefully, you might pick (A) Aorta. In fact, in the Next Step Full Length analysis, about 65% get this question right while the other 35% all pick the aorta. [05:23] Question 46: Fluorine What does 18F become after a beta+ decay? (A) 18Ne (B) 18O (C) 17F (D) 19F Bryan's Insights: The test would give you a periodic table where you click on the button in the corner of the screen. It doesn't give you much except for the atomic number and then the element itself. First, you need to know the weight of a beta+ particle. It's a position which is a fancy name for a positively charged electron. So beta- is an electron while beta+ is a positively charged electron. Relative to a proton, you can treat beta decay as having a zero mass. So if Fluorine starts with a mass of 18, shooting out a positron is not going to change the 18 at all because it didn't give out any mass. If shot off a positive charge, it means that one of it is positive, so the proton became a neutron. Fluorine which had 9 protons went down to only 8 protons. So you have to go to the periodic table and see what's element number 8 and you would see that it's Oxygen. [08:00] Question 47: ATP/ADP Ratio A cell in which an elevated ATP/ADP ratio exists is most likely to demonstrate which allosteric effect resulting for this elevation? (A) Inhibition of pyruvate kinase (B) Activation of phosphofructokinase 1 (C) Inhibition of ATP citrate lyase (D) Activation of hexokinase Bryan's Insights: The cell is in a really high energy state, which means you don't need to make any more. In response, you slow your Krebs cycle and all that mechanics down. So you don't want to pick the activation choices, leaving us here with A and C. The correct answer here is A. Remember that pyruvate is that last step in glycolysis so the key regulatory point when you wrap up glycolysis before you head over to the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex or Krebs cycle, you regulate glycolysis right at the end there. If you shut that off in the end and if you have tons of ATP floating around, you don't need to make more energy. Hence, you switch off glycolysis by switching off pyruvate kinase, the enzyme in the end. ATP citrate lyase is a key enzyme that links carbohydrate metabolism (the Krebs cycle) to fat anabolism (making fat). The enzyme basically converts the citrate to acetyl CoA, which goes over and the body makes fat molecules out of it for storage. If you have tons of energy and you want to store that energy, you would actually bump up your ATP citrate lyase. You would want to activate that whole chain of connections. [12:08] Quick Tips for Answering Biochemistry Questions First, understand what the question is asking since students get very hung up in metabolism and biochemistry, trying to memorize a million names of enzymes, substrates, etc. Of course you have to recognize names. But when it comes to actually answering questions on test day, just put it in the big picture. Contextualize it. Don't skip this first step because just from the names of the molecules, and recognizing the general situation, you can take a pretty good crack at the question. In terms of the Krebs cycle and all the different energy pathways, you have to know them backwards-forwards, upside-down. You should be able to list every enzyme in the Krebs cycle, every substrate that gets acted on by the enzyme, and all the coenzymes and cofactors, all the inputs and the outputs. "The Krebs cycle is your alpha and omega. You have to know the whole thing." As for any pathway in the body, just generally know the inputs and outputs and the regulatory steps. You don't have to list every single step in glycolysis on the MCAT. That's okay. That said, memorize the Krebs cycle backwards and forwards first and then remember all the key steps in all the other reactions. Contextualize to Foster Engagement: Engagement is critical for a business to thrive - more specifically, employees need to know the context of how their learning ties into their day-to-day roles. You don't have to provide entertainment or “bells and whistles” to foster emotional ownership within your business. Leaders Need Regular Interaction: The best leaders are the ones creating opportunities to learn from employees regarding their daily routines and pain points. These “in between the meetings” conversations are the basis for creating better top-level coaches and a more engaged workforce. Provide Opportunities for Deep-Thinking: Don't just take employees off site to entertain them. 117: Q&A #5: Delegation 101, High-Value Work, and Getting Back Into the Groove

Angela joins Charlie Gilkey answer your questions and discuss how to determine what to delegate in your business, how to focus on high-value work, what low prices say about your products and services, and what to do when your getting off your schedules and productivity schedules.   Key Takeaways: [1:15] - Open invitation to share your questions and suggestions for discussion on the Facebook group. [2:08] - How do I determine how and what to delegate in my business? How do you decide what low-value work is worth doing at all, and how do you determine which stuff to put off until a later time? [3:05] - Charlie suggests making a list to guide your decisions about delegations. Are you doing the same thing every week (routinely) that could be delegated to someone else? Consider projects versus routines. [7:04] - There are different levels of delegation: tasks, projects, and responsibilities. Ultimately, the goal should be to move toward delegating responsibilities, rather than delegating tasks. [12:09] - Routines and other frequent tasks would be ideal to delegate, while more involved projects may not be worth the time spent making sure someone else can do the project. Focus on what will allow you to do more high-value work. [14:25] - What can you delegate that gets you ten hours a week back? [15:18] - Framework for business endeavors: Cash flow, opportunity, visibility. Use these principles as a guide to prioritize business goals. [17:55] - Creative Cage Match! When all of your projects are pitted against each other, which one will be the first one that won’t get done? The last one left standing remains high priority. Completed projects should help to set up other projects. [20:54] - When you see something priced low, do you assume it’s going to be crappy? Or do you assume the person is racing to the bottom to compete with price instead of great content? [21:39] - Don’t assume people won’t pay a higher price for your product or service. There’s always a segment of customers that are willing to pay a different price - based on those who are interested in quality of content. [23:34] - There is very little relationship between price and value, although many people do make that correlation when considering their purchases. Make sure you’re not selling yourself short based on the quality of your product. [25:29] - Consider the placebo effect of pricing: once they’ve paid a certain amount, people will value something a lot more because they paid that amount, not necessarily because of the value of the product. [29:43] - Be confident in the value that you’re putting on the table. [30:42] - When you feel you’re getting out of cycles that support you, or you’re off your schedule, what do you do? What can we think about to get ourselves back on track? [31:54] - Charlie notices he’s off his cycle when he starts to feel in a slump productivity-wise. Contextualize your experience. If it is something that is happening over a prolonged period of time, you may need to re-evaluate something about your process to get back on track. [35:10] - Reset! Once you diagnose what the problem is, think about what changes you can make to increase your productivity. [38:52] - To ask more questions, join the Creative Giant Campfire Facebook Group or directly e-mail Angela.   Mentioned in This Episode: Creative Giant Campfire Facebook Group Angela@productiveflourishing.com Fancy Hands Previous Q&A Podcasts: Episode 90 Episode 104 Episode 107 Episode 112 The One Thing - Gary Keller Three P’s of Pricing

Today's guest is Tim Lucas, the lead pastor of Liquid Church, a multisite church with four campuses located in New Jersey. Tim is a dynamic communicator and he's known for his trademark humor, honesty, and insight. He has also written a book about marriage, called You Married The Wrong Person: The Relationship Secret Every Couple Needs To Know. Liquid Church's innovative approaches to outreach have been spotlighted by CNN and The New York Times. When reaching others with the Gospel, it's not just proclamation, it's demonstration. One of the hurdles churches who are in or near urban areas may face is reaching them in a real and authentic way so that they are attracted to the thought of coming to church. Pastor Tim explains that his method of sharing the Gospel to a new community for a location is by serving them. Liquid doesn't wait until launch day to show them they care, but rather they go out into the community and start impacting them by serving them in any way possible. 2. Leadership has to be more localized. Learn to speak the language of the community your church is in. Pastor Tim shares how diverse New Jersey is, and as a result of this, Liquid has played off of this diversity. Pastor Josh made the point that many times churches will copy the methods of other churches, but they overlook the fact that they are in a completely different culture. Contextualize the gospel message to the culture in which you live. 3. Don't let ministry become your mistress. Tim admits that he had prioritized Liquid's growth over the growth of his family. In order to eradicate this, he went through a season of “radical pruning”, where he radically cut back his schedule. This included letting go of his involvement in many church ministries and decisions, as well as saying no to outside speaking engagements until his children were a certain age. Tim explained that he had to “say no for a season so that my family...would get my prime cut.” Tim also revealed that his work week consists of Monday through Thursday, with his Fridays and Saturdays reserved specifically for family time. Quotes from this Episode: “A church on mission that's engaged with the culture is more of a hospital for sinners than a museum for saints.” - Tim Lucas “Never preach methodology. Preach the message, but the methodology changes.” - Tim Lucas “The people we're reaching, they're not starting at 0, they're starting at -4.” - Tim Lucas “We have to present the Gospel in the most winsome way possible. And it's not just proclamation, it's demonstration of grace.” - Tim Lucas “Contextualize the gospel message to the culture in which you live in.” - Josh Gagnon “Reach the culture that you're in and stop trying to copy the culture everybody else is in.” - Josh Gagnon “The Church is Jesus' bride; the calling is mine.” - Tim Lucas “It's a discipline of the schedule that elevates the spiritual health.” - Tim Lucas “If you are in ministry, God has only entrusted it to you for a season--it's not yours. But don't fail on the things that God has entrusted to you for a lifetime.” - Josh Gagnon

Acknowledge to students that their opinions are understandable, given their own unique experiences. Help them understand other people have had different experiences, and therefore have different opinions. Asking students how they think these differences might be handled helps them understand the conflict as complex, and not just argue for their side. Dr. Bill Winslade explains how opening students' eyes to many perspectives on an emotional issue can be tricky and how he does it in the classroom.
