At a 2015 World Cup match in Vancouver, Kara searched nine stores for her daughters' jerseys and found none. That spark of “joyful irritation” became a movement to build teams, build community, and build an industry. In this episode, Kara joins Ilana to share how that moment ignited Angel City FC, how she, along with her partners, managed to create one of the most valuable women's soccer teams in the world, and why she embraces rejection as a growth strategy. Emotional Rollercoaster: Final Home Game Portland Thorns PreviewIn our latest episode, we dive into the emotions of the season's last home game. Theres a special giveaway at the stadium – a bobblehead pin (yes, just a pin!). We talk about Jun Endo's sheer soccer brilliance and her 'cheeky' moves, including a tap pass that belongs in the Louvre. Join us as we discuss the uncertain fate of the season and try to hold back tears over Ali Riley. It's not over till it's mathematically over!!!
The Orlando Pride got a much-needed win on Friday, thanks to a stoppage-time own goal from the Portland Thorns off a Marta corner kick. The Pride played well in the second half after a first-half stalemate, but the goals continue to elude Orlando's attacking players. Ally Watt's brace didn't count because the speedy forward couldn't stay onside. However, we were glad to see Portland illustrate our repeated message that putting the ball in the box on set pieces is a good idea. We looked back at our score predictions for the Portland match, discussed all the important moments and players, and made our selections for Player of the match. After our Portland rewind, we discussed Orlando trading Zambian international forward Prisca Chilufya to Angel City FC. Parting ways with an attacking piece, despite being offensively challenged and jockeying for playoff position, speaks volumes about how expendable the Pride found Chilufya. The page has been turned, and we looked back at a forgettable Pride career for the Zambian. This week's mailbagbox asked us about Marta's performance, Portland's goalkeeper, our off-season passions, what does MVP really mean, and much more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show.Orlando has a big midweek Concacaf W Champions Cup match against CF Pachuca, with the winner advancing and the loser going home. We opine on whether the Pride should prioritize this match or Saturday's NWSL road trip to Washington in terms of squad rotation. Finally, we previewed Saturday's visit to play the Spirit. Washington is locked into second place, but the Spirit would like nothing more than to knock the Pride down the standings heading into the postseason. Orlando needs to scratch out a result to stay in contention for a spot in the top four and a home playoff match. We look at the series history, preview the game, provide our key matchups, and make our score predictions. If you'd like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we'd love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site. Here's how Episode 105 went down:0:15 – The Pride got a last-gasp winner against Portland, and even though the Thorns scored it on themselves, it still counts. Plus, goodbye to Prisca.17:19 - The mailbagbox was massive after a light one last week.39:07 - The Pride host Pachuca in the midweek and then have to travel to Washington to take on the Spirit on short rest. That seems less than optimal.
Join us live for the ultimate Orlando Pride debrief as we unpack that gritty 1-0 road warrior win over the Portland Thorns—defending champs showing why they're top dogs in the NWSL! We'll dive deep into Prisca Chilufya's blockbuster trade to Angel City FC for $50K in allocation cash and what it means for the Pride's attack moving forward. Plus, a full breakdown of the latest NWSL standings with playoffs heating (Pride sitting pretty in the mix—spoiler: we're chasing that Shield repeat!). Don't miss our preview of the Concacaf W Champions Cup: can Orlando defeat Pachuca Femenil at home this Wednesday to secure Group A supremacy? All this, plus fan Q&A and bold predictions before Thursday's Pride Pod returns. Purple Army, let's roar! #NWSL #Pachuca #OrlandoPride
For the Glory KC is back with the 150th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City didn't play, so they can't break our hearts this week. In fact, it's pretty optimistic with Wednesday's press conference with new President of Soccer Operations, David Lee. He introduced himself to the fanbase and media and made a strong first impression. For a deeper dive on that press conference, we've got that in article form, but we'll take you through the big notes.Even though Sporting KC have a CSO hired, it won't stop Sheena and I from thinking we know best and deciding the fate of the 17 players who are out of contract, on options years or have loans that include a purchase option. If you prefer nearly 6,000 written words instead of listening to us talk, I joined six other KCSJ colleagues in the written word earlier this week. Sheena did call this "some of her best work," so you should probably listen. It was fun!As a bonus, even though there are only eight guys on guaranteed contracts, Sheena and I discuss who of those we'd actually like to keep too, with Daniel Salloi and Shapi Suleymanov getting the most attention. In the Sporting KC round-up we spread that good word that SKC cannot win the Wooden Spoon, Mike Burns is sticking around and vent a little about that silly SKC/Minnesota United game we never talked about. The KC Current just keep winning. For the Glory KC is back with the 147th episode of the show! The KC Current are the headliners this week, and probably should be each week, because they had themselves a marvelous weekend! After the Washington Spirit dropped points to Angel City FC on Thursday night, that opened the door for the Kansas City Current to lift the shield on Saturday night. All they had to do was win.And of course they did! They defeated the Seattle Reign 2-0, lifted the NWSL Shield as the best record in the league, with five games remaining. It's the fastest ever shield win in league history, breaking the previous record set by the 2014 Seattle Reign. But that Reign team ultimately didn't win the NWSL Championship. They lost the final to FC Kansas City, coached by Vlatko Andonovski. Sheena and I work through all the emotions and moments from the night and how the KC Current can't let that happen to them. Across town, things were much worse for Sporting Kansas City. They lost, yet again, this time to the Vancouver Whitecaps. And it was a depleted Whitecaps side who were missing most of their stars. It didn't matter as SKC fell behind just over a minute into the game and never recovered. Then again, they did play some kids and try some different things for next year. So, I supposed we sort of got what we were asking for last week. But losing sucks. And St. Louis City won, so Sporting KC are closer to the Wooden Spoon (for the worst record in MLS) than anything else and now behind their cross-state rivals. On one night, the KC Current proclaim themselves one of the best teams in the world and Sporting KC get eliminated from playoff contention. What a weird night for Kansas City soccer. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:Messi extends contract with Inter Miami and will retire in MLSUS Open Cup and Canadian Championship finals setHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Premier League Morning Live! - 1:11KC Current win the Shield! - 11:35Sporting KC may have quit - 45:10Digital Crawl - 1:11:45Upcoming GamesKC Current vs. Chicago Stars - Fri. Angel City's Wild Win & Bay FC Showdown! | Chaos, Clean Sheets & LA VibesIt's Mario and Angela! We're still riding high after Angel City's dramatic win over Orlando Pride (Alyssa Thompson, take a bow) and sharing all the fun and chaos from the season ticket holder event—sweat, shenanigans, and surprise shoutouts included. Now we're looking ahead to a big home clash: Angel City FC vs Bay FC at BMO. Bay's coming in hungry, but we're hoping to keep the good vibes (and clean sheets) rolling. Hit follow, support the pod, and let's get loud for LA!
Join us on the Orlando Pride Pod as we welcome Jacquie Ovalle to the team!
[Note: This episode was recorded Monday evening, prior to the reports breaking that the Pride were in advanced talks to finalize a deal for Lizbeth Ovalle, so there is no mention of that on the show.]The Orlando Pride extended their winless skid to four matches with a scoreless draw at the Kansas City Current. However, there's a big difference between home draws against Utah and Louisville and a road stalemate with the league leaders. What was troubling about the draw was that Orlando didn't score a goal and Barbra Banda had to leave the game due to injury after landing awkwardly following a shot attempt. The Current, unlike Louisville a week ago, did not score a goal against themselves for the Pride. That was rude, but it's also why the Current lead the NWSL. The match itself was a defensive battle and neither side created much all night. Whether the three-and-a-half-hour delay for extreme heat had anything to do with stifling the offenses is debatable, but ultimately the Pride will take that point from Kansas City and move on.We looked back at our pessimistic score predictions, discussed the game, and made our selections for Player of the Match. No attackers were chosen. This week's mailbagbox asked us about the Pride's offensive struggles, and how much of them can be attributed to a myriad of different players being deployed by Seb Hines this season. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show.We previewed the Pride's trip to Los Angeles to face Angel City FC in a rare Thursday night match. It'll be a late one Thursday, as it kicks off at 10:30 p.m. our time, so take some PTO from work so you can get some rest. We looked at the series history, provided our key matchups, and made our final score predictions. Finally, we spoke a bit about the Pride signing goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse to a new contract through 2027.If you'd like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we'd love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site. Here's how Episode 97 went down:0:15 – The Pride haven't scored a goal for themselves in two matches. It's concerning, but a draw on the road against the first-place Kansas City Current is a good result.11:36 - The mailbagbox went from large last week to more compact this week, but listeners are concerned with the lack of goals.18:07 - The Pride head even further west to take on Angel City FC.
