Critical Mistakes and a Potential GK Change for Sporting KC

For the Glory KC

For the Glory KC is back with the 189th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City returned home only to have a handful of mistakes derail any sort of opportunity to bounce back. They welcomed the Houston Dynamo to town and changed up their gameplan to some positive effect before Lasse Berg Johnsen got a red card and fumbled the plan. From there, Stefan Cleveland and Calvin Harris mistakes took away any chance to claw out some points in the MLS standings. It left us questioning if it's time for John Pulskamp to take back over in goal. Along with Rapha Wicky's job security a mere 18 games into the season. Also, what's up with Manu Garcia not starting? But there were bright spots. The defense looked good in this back four's first start together and the mistakes could hardly be pinned on them. Moises Mosquera got his first start, and Jake Davis had a good night. Plus, it was Harry Potter night, so that brought some interesting conversation. And there were injury updates on Zorhan Bassong, Taylor Calheira, Justin Reynolds and Diego Borges. In other Sporting KC news, there were rumor updates on Andre Luiz and Mo Salah, as well as a loan for Cielo Tschantret and Tim Leibold finds a new home. In news that came out after recording, another rumor, with even more detail, that the Andre Luiz deal is just pending a medical. The KC Current knocked out two home games and came away with four points. First, a 5-1 win over Racing Louisville followed by a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC. Why doesn't it feel like enough? Are we just super spoiled from the 2025 Kansas City Current's regular season? Probably. We talk through Haley Hopkins finally slotting in at center forward and going off for three goals and an assist over two games. Plus, all the missing players and the news that Michelle Cooper and Lorena are still "a few weeks away."In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few more topics:FIFA tries and fails to sell the World CupSKC II resultsMLS rule changesSave the Caps!NWSL 2027 calendarHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro - 0:00Sporting KC - 10:25KC Current - 49:31Digital Crawl - 1:08:41Upcoming GamesKC Current @ Houston Dash, SAT, Aug. 8th at 7:45PM CSTSKC II @ Austin FC II, SUN, Aug 9th at 7:30PMNo Sporting KC -- it's the Leagues Cup and they aren't in itAs a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros return to process the full-force return of Major League Soccer following the World Cup break. Christian kicks off the show with a hilarious and relatable personal story about taking his 3.5-year-old son to his first competitive soccer class 1v1s. The hosts then dive into the latest blockbusters across MLS, analyzing Casemiro's 1-0 debut for Inter Miami as a physical midfield anchor, Antoine Griezmann's immediate scoring spark for Orlando City, and Christian's in-person breakdown of Robert Lewandowski's debut for the Chicago Fire against NYCFC. Next, Angel City FC forward Riley Tiernan joins the podcast for a fun, wide-ranging interview. The NWSL sophomore shares her journey from an unsigned trialist to team top scorer, explaining how getting passed over initially fueled her "dog" mentality on the pitch. Riley also details her commitment to Rutgers in 8th grade, breaks down her viral Flying Dutchman order at In-N-Out, discusses her U.S. U-23 national team call-up, and reacts to a viral post-match meme. To close out the episode, Christian and Alexis inject a heavy dose of "hopamine" as they turn their focus toward rebuilding the USMNT for 2030. The hosts highlight six rising American youth prospects who could transform the national team's core—including Philadelphia Union's Cavan Sullivan and 6'6" center back Neil Pierre, dual-national defender Noahkai Banks, Orlando's Justin Ellis, RSL playmaker Zavier Gozo, and Chelsea goalkeeper Gaga Slonina. Angel City FC just made three moves that can't really be understood in isolation: the $850,000 signing of Ally Sentnor, the departure of rising midfielder Kennedy Fuller, and the dismissal of head coach Alexander Straus. On paper, they look like separate stories, but in reality they point to the same shift in urgency expressed top down at Angel City.In this episode, LDG breaks down how Angel City's decisions reveal a club recalibrating its entire timeline. From investing heavily in elite young talent, to moving on from a long-term prospect, to parting ways with a coach brought in to build a sustainable project, each move raises the same question: has Angel City stopped waiting for its future and started demanding results now?He digs into what the Sentnor transfer really signals about valuation and ambition in the modern NWSL, why the Kennedy Fuller trade is less about “losing a player” and more about competing timelines, and whether Alexander Straus was a victim of poor results or a changing organizational identity.Zooming out, this isn't just a story about one club. It's about a league entering a new era, where investment is rising, patience is shrinking, and every decision carries immediate pressure to deliver. Did Angel City just accelerated into contention or abandoned a plan before it had time to work?listen in to hear my thoughts, I hope you all enjoy!Thank you all for listening! This week, London is the stage for the third edition of World Sevens Football, the pioneering 7-a-side women's football competition, and Co-Founders Jennifer Mackesy and Julie Uhrman broke into preparations to join David Cushnan in the studio to discuss the concept and its creation. Eight WSL clubs will compete at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium for a prize pot of $1.5 million. Mackesy, who has led the investment in World Sevens, which launched with two events last year, is also a minority owner of Chelsea Women and NWSL club Gotham FC. Uhrman, Co-Founder and President of Angel City FC over the past few years, and now a special advisor at the NWSL club, is this week making her public debut as Co-Founder. On the show, they assess the current health of women's football and deliver a message to sceptics who doubt its business sustainability. They also explain the entertainment-infused mission behind World Sevens; its unique format; how clubs have been convinced to participate; the player buy-in that is critical to its success; and the way the tournaments can work as part of the existing and increasingly crowded club football calendar.   ----- Nominate the rising star in your organisation for this year's Leaders Under 40 class - entries close on Monday 8th June. Tickets are free and you can get them here!Sporting Kansas City couldn't string together three wins in a row for the first time since 2022. Perhaps after MLS returns from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break. Sporting KC nearly pulled off the comeback after a slow start against Red Bull New York on Saturday night. It was Star Wars night at Sporting Park and Sheena and I talk our off the field escapades, in addition to what happened on the pitch. After New York's quick start, Sporting KC generated numerous opportunities and nearly doubled RBNY's expected goal (xG) output, according to Fotmob (1.69 to 0.88).Though they had the greater chances, they failed to finish too consistently. Additionally, their mistakes were punished more readily. That doesn't even account for all the chances that didn't lead to a shot when a player took one too many touches or made a poor pass to kill an attack. Despite that, Kansas City remained in the game until the dying minutes. A welcome change after 5-0 and 6-0 blowouts just a few weeks back.We talk through all the highs and lows, as well as time spent on Capita, Berg Johnsen, Manu Garcia, Taylor Calheira, Shapi, Jake Davis and others. Sheena even breaks out a top-ranking list for SKC and the Current. In addition to the game, we talk through Austin FC firing their coach and Sporting Director after losing to Sporting KC, Or Blorian leaving his last club on a high, Zorhan Bassong's shot at a World Cup roster and Zamir Loyo Reynaga scoring in his latest international endeavor. The KC Current were up and down this week. They ended the week on a high, beating the then first place Portland Thorns. But their midweek road loss to Angel City FC soured the week a bit. Temwa Chawinga continued her Golden Boot climb and the ongoing Ally Sentnor/Haley Hopkins debate gets another chapter. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:SKC II resultsMessi injured?USMNT roster for the World Cup!Here is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro - 0:00Sporting KC - 1:59KC Current - 54:18Digital Crawl - 1:14:41Upcoming GamesSKC II @ Real Monarchs, FRI, May 29th at 9:00PM CSTKC Current vs Boston Legacy, SAT, May 30th at 12:30PM As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Since the last episode, Houston has lost three straight matches to the Utah Royals FC, Denver Summit FC, and Kansas City Current, extending the club's winless streak to five games. The bigger concern is the offense. The Dash have scored just one goal during that stretch, and it came from a penalty. Houston has clearly missed Makenzy Robbe since her season ending injury, while top scorer Kiki Van Zanten has also missed the last two matches through injury. Now the Dash return home for matches against San Diego Wave FC and Angel City FC as Fabrice Gautrat looks for a response from his team. From roster chatter and league-wide storylines to big-picture Dash talk, we've got you covered. Since joining Angel City FC midway through the 2025 NWSL season, Sveindís Jónsdóttir has been a threat. A hot start to 2026 saw her score three goals to go with two assists through the first three games, and she'll be a key to the club's success the rest of the season. But she's also been a threat off the pitch, as she was the consensus pick as the player her teammates wouldn't let their sons date. Kara Nortman bets big on women’s sports, and it’s paying off. She is the co-owner of Angel City FC, an NWSL team with a $335 million valuation. She is also the managing partner of Monarch Collective, the first investment platform exclusively dedicated to women’s sports. Monarch is now investing a $250 million fund with a stake in three NWSL teams and a European football club. In March, Monarch acquired a minority stake in Cleveland’s WNBA expansion team, becoming the first private equity firm to invest in the league. In this episode of The Deal, Kara breaks down for Alex and Jason how Monarch became the first private equity firm approved to invest in the WNBA and why they chose Cleveland as their team. She also explains why she considers this moment the “third inning” of women’s sports investment and why she is willing to waste time with the right people. Kara also breaks down her belief that the key to derisking women’s sports is putting butts in seats. Angel City FC entered Inter&Co Stadium without a loss on the 2026 season. The Los Angeles-based club left Inter&Co Stadium with one loss on the 2026 season. That's mainly because Haley McCutcheon turned vulture just a few feet in front of the Angel City net. The veteran midfielder scored on two shots that traveled about a combined six feet, ending what could have otherwise been a frustrating night on a high note. The Pride scored late, conceded later, and retook the lead even later than that on the way to a 2-1 home win over former Orlando defender Emily Sams' new team in a match that saw two would-be Pride goals not count. The first was offside and the second was for a push, but the other two counted despite nervy reviews. We look back at a solid performance against a good Angel City side, checked our score predictions (one of us nailed it), and made our picks for Player of the Match. Several players performed well, but it was an easy pick in the end.Unfortunately, it wasn't all good for the Pride, as both Jacquie Ovalle and Oihane left the match with injuries.
