This week, London is the stage for the third edition of World Sevens Football, the pioneering 7-a-side women's football competition, and Co-Founders Jennifer Mackesy and Julie Uhrman broke into preparations to join David Cushnan in the studio to discuss the concept and its creation. Eight WSL clubs will compete at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium for a prize pot of $1.5 million. Mackesy, who has led the investment in World Sevens, which launched with two events last year, is also a minority owner of Chelsea Women and NWSL club Gotham FC. Uhrman, Co-Founder and President of Angel City FC over the past few years, and now a special advisor at the NWSL club, is this week making her public debut as Co-Founder. On the show, they assess the current health of women's football and deliver a message to sceptics who doubt its business sustainability. They also explain the entertainment-infused mission behind World Sevens; its unique format; how clubs have been convinced to participate; the player buy-in that is critical to its success; and the way the tournaments can work as part of the existing and increasingly crowded club football calendar. ----- Nominate the rising star in your organisation for this year's Leaders Under 40 class - entries close on Monday 8th June. For the Glory KC is back with the 180th episode of the show! Before we get to the podcast, the KC Soccer Journal is having a free event at the Indian Creek Library in Olathe. Tickets are free and you can get them here!Sporting Kansas City couldn't string together three wins in a row for the first time since 2022. Perhaps after MLS returns from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break. Sporting KC nearly pulled off the comeback after a slow start against Red Bull New York on Saturday night. It was Star Wars night at Sporting Park and Sheena and I talk our off the field escapades, in addition to what happened on the pitch. After New York's quick start, Sporting KC generated numerous opportunities and nearly doubled RBNY's expected goal (xG) output, according to Fotmob (1.69 to 0.88).Though they had the greater chances, they failed to finish too consistently. Additionally, their mistakes were punished more readily. That doesn't even account for all the chances that didn't lead to a shot when a player took one too many touches or made a poor pass to kill an attack. Despite that, Kansas City remained in the game until the dying minutes. A welcome change after 5-0 and 6-0 blowouts just a few weeks back.We talk through all the highs and lows, as well as time spent on Capita, Berg Johnsen, Manu Garcia, Taylor Calheira, Shapi, Jake Davis and others. Sheena even breaks out a top-ranking list for SKC and the Current. In addition to the game, we talk through Austin FC firing their coach and Sporting Director after losing to Sporting KC, Or Blorian leaving his last club on a high, Zorhan Bassong's shot at a World Cup roster and Zamir Loyo Reynaga scoring in his latest international endeavor. The KC Current were up and down this week. They ended the week on a high, beating the then first place Portland Thorns. But their midweek road loss to Angel City FC soured the week a bit. Temwa Chawinga continued her Golden Boot climb and the ongoing Ally Sentnor/Haley Hopkins debate gets another chapter. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:SKC II resultsMessi injured?USMNT roster for the World Cup!Here is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro - 0:00Sporting KC - 1:59KC Current - 54:18Digital Crawl - 1:14:41Upcoming GamesSKC II @ Real Monarchs, FRI, May 29th at 9:00PM CSTKC Current vs Boston Legacy, SAT, May 30th at 12:30PM As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Welcome to the Orange & Blueprints Podcast - your go-to spot for everything Houston Dash and women's soccer in the Bayou City!Manny and Diego are back to discuss the current struggles of the Houston Dash. Since the last episode, Houston has lost three straight matches to the Utah Royals FC, Denver Summit FC, and Kansas City Current, extending the club's winless streak to five games. The bigger concern is the offense. The Dash have scored just one goal during that stretch, and it came from a penalty. Houston has clearly missed Makenzy Robbe since her season ending injury, while top scorer Kiki Van Zanten has also missed the last two matches through injury. Now the Dash return home for matches against San Diego Wave FC and Angel City FC as Fabrice Gautrat looks for a response from his team. From roster chatter and league-wide storylines to big-picture Dash talk, we've got you covered. Since joining Angel City FC midway through the 2025 NWSL season, Sveindís Jónsdóttir has been a threat. A hot start to 2026 saw her score three goals to go with two assists through the first three games, and she'll be a key to the club's success the rest of the season. But she's also been a threat off the pitch, as she was the consensus pick as the player her teammates wouldn't let their sons date. We got to the bottom of it all — examining her thoughts on the 2026 Angel City FC season, and why she's not the red flag that her teammates think she is. (00:53) Is Sveindís a red flag? Kara Nortman bets big on women’s sports, and it’s paying off. She is the co-owner of Angel City FC, an NWSL team with a $335 million valuation. She is also the managing partner of Monarch Collective, the first investment platform exclusively dedicated to women’s sports. Monarch is now investing a $250 million fund with a stake in three NWSL teams and a European football club. In March, Monarch acquired a minority stake in Cleveland’s WNBA expansion team, becoming the first private equity firm to invest in the league. In this episode of The Deal, Kara breaks down for Alex and Jason how Monarch became the first private equity firm approved to invest in the WNBA and why they chose Cleveland as their team. She also explains why she considers this moment the “third inning” of women’s sports investment and why she is willing to waste time with the right people. Kara also breaks down her belief that the key to derisking women’s sports is putting butts in seats. Wines We're Drinking Jessica: Cramosi Vineyards Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills, Oregon (Latina-owned) Perla: Juggernaut Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (New Zealand) Perla Lozano didn't grow up as a sports kid. She didn't start soccer until high school, she couldn't afford club leagues, and no one in her family was pushing her onto a field. But a coach noticed something in her that she hadn't noticed in herself yet, and that moment changed everything. Now a marketing executive by day and a volunteer leader for Orange AYSO by night and weekends, Perla is on a mission to get more girls off the sidelines and into the game. She runs one of the few youth soccer leagues in Southern California that guarantees every kid at least 75% play time, and she's seen firsthand how sports rewires girls' confidence, identity, and sense of what's possible. This episode hits close to home- Jessica played softball and cheered from third grade through college, and the two of them go deep on everything from the pressure of club leagues to the real reason girls quit sports (hint: it's usually not because they stopped loving the game). Angel City FC entered Inter&Co Stadium without a loss on the 2026 season. The Los Angeles-based club left Inter&Co Stadium with one loss on the 2026 season. That's mainly because Haley McCutcheon turned vulture just a few feet in front of the Angel City net. The veteran midfielder scored on two shots that traveled about a combined six feet, ending what could have otherwise been a frustrating night on a high note. The Pride scored late, conceded later, and retook the lead even later than that on the way to a 2-1 home win over former Orlando defender Emily Sams' new team in a match that saw two would-be Pride goals not count. The first was offside and the second was for a push, but the other two counted despite nervy reviews. We look back at a solid performance against a good Angel City side, checked our score predictions (one of us nailed it), and made our picks for Player of the Match. Several players performed well, but it was an easy pick in the end.Unfortunately, it wasn't all good for the Pride, as both Jacquie Ovalle and Oihane left the match with injuries. Our mailbagbox had questions about starters on the back line, memes, NWSL referees, and more. We start with locker room jokes… and end with one of the most powerful conversations we've had. This week on The RE—CAP Show, Tobin and Christen sit down with Prisca Chilufya — Zambian international, Copper Queen, and rising star at Angel City FC. The conversation spans all topics, from calling out Christen's very quiet locker room presence to identity, inclusion, and what it actually feels like to navigate the women's game when the spotlight isn't always kind—and why the support inside this community matters more than anything outside it. Backpasses Ep. 1: A Quick (Wild) History of Women's Pro Soccer in the U.S.We just fired up the time machine and took the most chaotic walk through U.S. women's soccer history—because if you're loving the NWSL right now, you should know what it took to get here. We go from the barely-documented 1919 league, to the Craig League in 1950, to the USWNT forming in the ‘80s, to the brutal three-season curse of WUSA and WPS. We get into the WPSL quietly holding it down, then the early NWSL “YouTube days,” the Lifetime storytelling wins, and the GO90 streaming nightmare. And we don't dodge the hard stuff: the 2021 reporting, the Yates investigation, and why real player protections finally had to happen.
