If only we had a crystal ball.In the last several years, the team at LBF's Access Louisville podcast have developed an end-of-the-year tradition where we sit down and try to predict what might happen the next year. In this week's episode, we revisit predictions we made for 2024 — and it was a mixed bag on what we got right and wrong. Some of the things we covered include Racing Louisville FC falling short of the playoffs, rumors of Humana's sale to Cigna (talks of a deal are reportedly off the table) and plans for a new 27-story hotel in Downtown Louisville. We also chat about the latest with the University of Louisville men's basketball team, tensions over development in West Louisville during the last year and Bob Dylan's new attraction in town.Be sure to tune in next week as we look to the future to make predictions for the upcoming year. Racing Louisville FC defender Carson Pickett was born without part of her left arm and Pickett went viral in 2019 after she was pictured giving an arm-bump with a young fan who was also missing part of his left arm. In 2022, Carson Pickett became the first player with a limb difference to play for the United States women's team and she told BBC Sportshour's Caroline Barker how her life has changed since that photo went viral.Where to start with Merle Liivand? A friend of the show, she spoke to us last year about how she combines her sports career as an open water swimmer with her environmental campaigning. Something she is about to be honoured for by the Estonian government. She's known as "The Mermaid" because she picks up rubbish when she's swimming at sea. Check out the Sportshour archive for more about that, but for now she is simply the latest in our series "Olympic Hopefuls" as we hear about her attempts to make it to Paris in July. Baseball's MLB season gets underway on Wednesday, but the first game between the San Diego Padres and the LA Dodgers isn't in California, it's in South Korea. The league are keen to develop an ever growing passion for baseball in East Asia fuelled in no small part by Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese super star whose switch to the LA Dodgers in the close season created the biggest contract in sports history. Sportshour's Adam Samuel reports.Sport and art are often at the leading edge of breaking down barriers and changing ill-conceived stereotypes of people and communities. Last week "Killers of the Flower Moon" actor Lily Gladstone just missed out on becoming the first Indigenous or Native American person to win an Oscar for acting, but her nomination will inspire many to pursue careers in a field they thought might not be for them. Same with sport, from Jim Thorpe to Ryneldi Becenti... We hear about how the next generation of Indigenous athletes is being nurturedPhoto: Carson Pickett pictured giving an arm-bump to Joseph Tidd, the then 2-year-old who was also missing part of his left arm. We also talk about what it's like to be a working mom of two small children who is also working in a high-profile sports job. For more on Yanez, check out this profile story we recently posted as the season is getting set to begin. After the interview, we talk about a couple other local sports developments in the world of bowling and golf.LBF Reporter Joel Stinnett is on the show to tell us about the Executive Strike & Spare, a bowling alley that has long been located near the Kentucky State Fair Grounds, moving to Jeffersontown. It'll be taking over a Dick's Sporting Goods location on South Hurstbourne that is expected to close soon. In the world of golf, Stinnett also tells us about a story he recently finished up about Eagle Creek Golf Course, in Oldham County, building a new $3 million clubhouse. As we reported this week, it's tech. It's mini golf. It's both — mixed with a lot of food, drinks and bright lights. One more thing — we also talk with the newest member of the Louisville Business First team and the Access Louisville crew, Reporter Piper Hansen. (00:00 - 4:47) - This June 10th edition of Soccer Saturday opens with a preview of the Indy 11 versus Hartford matchup coming up. The 11 have luckily come away with three points in every game against Hartford so far. The Indy 11 Women's team have 4 matches left in the regular season and are in control of their playoff destiny with these final few games. Finally, the news everyone has talked about this past week, Lionel Messi is landing in America to play soccer with Inter Miami. (7:48 - 18:00) - Roberto Molina comes onto the show for the second segment. The former Las Vegas Lights forward joined the Indy 11 in May and talks about getting caught up to speed on a team half-way through the year. Molina discusses the winning culture that has been formed in the Indy 11 camp and how that influences his drive to play. Rakestraw asks Molina to catch listeners up on his upbringing as a player originally born in El Salvador and then being raised in America. Post-interview Rakestraw details when and where soccer fans might be able to witness Messi play. (21:02 - 30:27) - Addie Chester joins the program fresh off two wins from Tuesday and Friday. Both games were 2-0 victories against Racing Louisville FC and Lexington SC. Chester, a Muncie local, has returned for her second season with the 11 women's team. Rakestraw wants to know what feels different from last year to this one and Chester believes that the biggest change is that the general public now knows that the 11 women's program is a quality soccer team. Chester talks about the honor of wearing an 11 Crest while playing and the comradery this team displays on and off the field. (33:29 - 45:42) - USL Tactics John Morrissey is the third guest of the show, he is immediately asked about Mark Lowry's midfield injury issues and how the coach can deal with them moving forward. Morrissey gives a scouting report on the Men's team's future opponent in Hartford Athletic. He notes that Hartford has struggled this season, but they still have a very energetic and fast offense that the 11 need to be prepared for. The 11 can control the game by preparing for the long ball and disrupting that offensive attack. While Hartford certainly has the talent, they just don't have the system in place to be a winning team yet. (48:44 - 59:46) The show closes out with more talk of Lionel Messi coming to America to play with Inter Miami in the MLS. A brief recall of 2007 and when David Beckham came to America and the hype that surrounded his arrival. Messi is arriving to an Inter Miami team that sits in 15th place, or last place in the Eastern Conference. Even at last place the addition of Messi has made Inter Miami one of the most talked about teams in American Sports this past week. Then, the usual breakdown of Premiere League happenings and the Champions League final occurring later this afternoon.

(00:00 - 06:22) - Soccer Saturday opens with the big news of the Indy 11's big win over the weekend where they scored a 4 - 0 victory over the Charleston Battery with the help of a red card three minutes into the match. (9:24 - 17:59) - Indy 11 Women's head coach Paul Dolinsky joins Rakestraw for the second segment. The 11 were head to head with Racing Louisville FC, the game settled at a 1 - 1 draw. It was their first time being down in a regular season game this season, but the team was fortunate enough to bring things to a draw before time expired in the second half. Four games into the regular season now and Dolinsky believes that the talent on this Women's 11 team has a lot of potential. The team is going to turn around and play Racing Louisville FC again as the away team, just three days after their home matchup. (21:00 - 29:31) - The halfway point of the program includes a replay of Rakestraw's interview earlier in the week with Brad Hauter as he was a part of the grounbreaking for 11 Park, the future home of the Indy 11. Hauter calls the experience surreal, finally getting to see years worth of work pay off and a bigger step towards their professional end goald being taken. Hauter details the future of Eleven Park as well as what it means for the organization in the short and long term. (32:30 - 42:18) - Head Coach for the Men's squad Mark Lowry comes on and breaks down the 11's impressive 4 - 0 win over the Charleston Battery last week. Lowry himself claims to have never seen a red-card penalty that quickly into a match in his career. Then Lowry has praise for Aodhan Quinn the team's penalty taker who managed to make two in that match. He says that Quinn has that "Under Pressure" personality where he can thrive in situations where most players would feel nervous. The team is still struggling with injuries, not just on the main roster but even academy players are injured making Lowry's job of roster management all the more difficult. (45:20 - 56:22) - Last on the show is the man himself, Aodhan Quinn joins the show. Quinn had two penalty goals last night, contibuting to the teams win and earning the squad 3 points. Quinn states the team has been focussing it on starting off quick and last nights opening penalty was the perfect quick start. Rakestraw wonders what makes Quinn the man for penalty shots and he responds that it is just a natural confidence he has on the pitch. While Quinn is supposed to have the weekend off, he has to get home and get straight into father duty as he has a 7 month old waiting at home. Finally, Rakestraw closes by asking Quinn his feeling on the groun breaking of Eleven Park. The program closes with Rakestraw breaking down the Premiere League's FA cup finals.

Welcome to the Health Talks NOW podcast, a Baptist Health production committed to bringing you the facts you need to help keep you and your family well.  We are wrapping up our mini-series Like A Pro. Today, we hear from Erin Simon. Erin is serious about nutrition and has seen how it impacts not only athletic performance, but also overall health and wellbeing. Today's conversation touches on body image, eating disorders, nutrition, healthy eating and overall wellness.  To kick off the conversation, Erin shares about her own nutrition journey. Much like many athletes in women's soccer, she admits to struggling with an eating disorder during her college years. Her mindset shift came when she began to learn about nutrition as a means to fuel her body for peak performance on the field. Since she was a health and exercise science major in college, Erin had a broad knowledge on the subject. Wanting to learn more, she hired a nutritionist who helped her understand the concept of macros. After applying this newfound knowledge to her own life, she noticed huge changes in her performance, energy levels, speed, acceleration and more. As women, we have been conditioned for a long time to consume less calories in order to fit into society's mold of a beautiful woman. This is the exact opposite of the messages being preached to our male counterparts. Erin points out how easy it is to see someone on social media and assume they have a perfect life. She has witnessed a shift recently as more people are beginning to be more open about mental health. For any young girl athletes working through the standards put upon us as women, Erin shares her best advice. Listen to what your body is telling you it needs and prioritize your gut health. Athletes' main focus should be on their performance rather than their appearance. Then, Erin offers a look into her eating schedule. She normally eats 5 small meals per day every 2.5-3 hours. On game days and the night before, she intakes more carbs than usual for future energy. She adheres to the 80/20 rule, in which 80% of her lifestyle habits are healthy and balanced, while the other 20% gives her time to enjoy herself and relax with loved ones without obsessing over health and nutrition. She believes that shocking your body with cheat meals is actually a good thing as it forces it out of its normal routine and allows it to learn to adapt to other things. Finally, Erin participates in a lightning question round so that listeners can get to know her a little better. Hear about her staple dinner recipe, favorite guilty pleasure food, workout and training music and her favorite restaurant in Louisville.   Key Takeaways: [0:45] Introduction to the episode and today's guest. [1:30] - Erin's nutrition journey. [5:00] - How society's standard for women have affected Erin's role as an athlete. We are continuing with our mini-series Like A Pro. Today, we hear from Gemma Bonner, a defender for Racing Louisville FC. Gemma has learned firsthand the importance of self-care, recovery and rest. As a professional athlete, these things are critical to maintaining top performance—though they ring true for everyday life, as well.  To kick off the conversation, Gemma shares that the older she gets, the more important a ritual of self-care has become in her life. She has learned that self-care can be beneficial in different ways, both mentally and physically. It's so easy to get caught up in our external world and forget the simple task of looking after ourselves. It can be as simple as making sure you are getting enough sleep and putting good fuel into your body. Gemma reveals her practical approaches to self-care. First and most importantly, she ensures that she gets enough sleep—at least 8 hours every night. To help with sleep and relaxation, she often turns to meditation. She also drinks plenty of water and stays hydrated to avoid fatigue and brain fog. She has recently taken up the commitment of yoga, which has helped her performance and mental health. She admits that she finds self-care easier to practice when she is on her training schedule in the U.S. compared to back home in England. For those struggling with time, she offers advice on getting started. It's important for Gemma to find a balance between her life, work and socializing. Our society reinforces the message of hustle culture, especially for women. Gemma has learned that she doesn't necessarily have to push herself to the extreme in one area, when there are so many other areas she could improve in. This might include something as simple as reading a book to help mental toughness. If there is anyone listening who feels they need permission to give themselves a break, this is your sign. Pushing beyond your limits can actually be more harmful than good. Finally, Gemma participates in a lightning question round so that listeners can get to know her a little better. Hear about her bedtime routine, mood boosting music and her favorite thing to do in Louisville. Baptist Health's services and expertise help keep Racing Louisville FC in top condition while they compete at the highest levels of the sport.

Prior to moving to Louisville, Brynn served as the Associate GM for the OL Reign. The position she holds at Racing Louisville FC is the only one of its kind in the NWSL. She helped curate it, and she gave her time to us to discuss its creation, her approach to working with the athletes and what makes Racing Louisville so special.Brynn and I jump into the conversation by chatting about the coffee scene in Louisville compared to her former home in Seattle before Brynn talks about the influence her parents had on her confidence when she was younger and how she has carried that with her into her professional life (3:40);We then talk about what ultimately got her to move from Seattle to Louisville, what her first priorities were after arriving in Louisville and how she defines, or doesn't define "player experience." (9:25); Brynn then talks about her approach to working with the players, and whether or not she considers herself a coach (20:15); We close out the conversation with Brynn offering advice "For the Girls" and defining "Womanhood in 3 Words" (23:35); And of course, the 40th edition of "Player Voicemail" (29:54).Listen/Subscribe/Rate/Review: Apple + SpotifyFollow/Engage: Instagram @untitled.offic + Twitter @untitledofficSupport The Girls.
