In this episode of the Crown Refs Podcast, we feature the inspiring journey of Jess Smith, a seasoned basketball official who has been making strides in college basketball officiating for over a decade, including seven years at the Division I level. Growing up in a basketball family, Jess was introduced to the game early on by her father, a former Division I women's basketball official. This unique upbringing laid the foundation for her deep love of the game, which has only grown through her experiences as both a coach and an official. Jess's dedication to leadership, communication, and mentorship is a driving force in her career, as she continues to prioritize growth, not just for herself, but also for those she mentors in the officiating community.⁣⁣We talk about the importance of maintaining composure under pressure, fostering positive communication with coaches and players, and the balance between leadership and humility on the court. Jess discusses her strategies for handling challenging situations, her focus on mentoring the next generation of officials, and how her experience as a coach influences her approach to officiating. This episode also touches on Jess's memorable moments in the game, from officiating the DII Elite 8 with an all-female crew to overcoming setbacks and bouncing back stronger. Whether you're a seasoned official or just starting out, this conversation is packed with practical takeaways to enhance your officiating journey.⁣⁣

Host Clare Sheridan welcomed Winston Perry, President of the John Green Preservation Coalition who updated us on the progress of the preservation and restoration of the John Green House in Nyack, NY.The John Green House (JGH) is the oldest remaining Dutch Colonial Sandstone structure in the Village of Nyack NY, built by John Edward Green (1772-1842) in the year 1819. It is listed on both the New York and National Registers of Historic Places, and is a Village of Nyack Historic Landmark. In our (multi-phase, multi-year project) vision, we will return the building to its beautiful appearance from the early 1800s during which it served as business home for John Green, sloop captain, lumber dealer, steamboat entrepreneur, church founder and turnpike trustee. As the house is restored and made safe, it will be architected - both inside and out - to serve the community in exciting ways.Winston C. Perry (Jr.), President - After a 50-year career as an architect, Mr. Perry is devoting his time in retirement to local history and historic preservation. A lifetime resident of Nyack, he is a Trustee of the Historical Society of the Nyacks, a former member of the Rockland County Historic Preservation Board, and former Village Historian of Upper Nyack. A life-long small boat sailor on the Hudson, he is especially interested in Hudson River history.www.RocklandHistory.org

Detective 1st grade Thomas Hovagim was born in Nyack NY. He was sworn in the NYPD on January 20, 1987. His police career was vast and varied. Fresh out of the academy he was assigned to Neighborhood Stabilization Unit (NSU) 5 which covered the 24,26,30 and 34pct. After 6 months he moved on and in January 1988 was assigned to the 034pct which at the time was one of the deadliest precincts in the city. While on patrol he racked up numerous arrests, many of which were for guns and drugs. While still in uniform as a rookie cop he was involved in a shooting where numerous shots were fired. A few year later while still in the 34Pct, he was assigned to the elite plain cloths anti-crime unit where he continued to take numerous guns off the street and was involved in another shooting. After three years in anti crime, he was transferred to the 019Pct Detective SQD. where he investigated many news worthy robberies, burglaries and homicides. In January of 1998, he was promoted to detective 3rd grade. As a rookie detective he caught one of the most infamous cases the city had ever seen, the disappearance later turned homicide of Irene Silverman. Because of his arrest activity and investigative skills, he was promoted to Detective 2nd grade in 2005 and three years later he was promoted to the prestigious rank of Detective 1st grade, where he continued to be a very active Detective. Det. Hovagim retired in May of 2011 to take a job with the 154 year old Harvard Club of NYC where he became the Clubs first Director of Security. He currently lives at home in Rockland county with his 20 years old triplet boys. In this episode Detective Hovagim talks about an interesting case involving dogs attacking a jogger resulting in physical injury. The victim sues the owner of the dogs and this sets in motion a plot to extort, frame, and injure the victim once again. Investigative excellence produces a positive conclusion. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
