It's not everyday we get a writer with the life and work experience of Charles Kipps to join our crazy podcast, let alone have a therapy session with Sadie and Jeanne.Yes, we talked about everything from Charles producing Aretha Franklin, to our struggles as writers, to Charles' decades of writing experiences ... and he's still selling screenplays to this day! You're not going to want to miss this one ... so much great advice from the legend that is Charles Kipps. (See below for Charles' full bio.)One note of correction: Charles inadvertently stated that Bill Cosby's agent helped him get his first book published, but it was actually Cosby's editor who did. Ep. 67 – In Part Two of my interview with NYPD Det. Tom Smith (Ret.) we discuss 9/11 and how the day unfolded for him; what it was like working rescue and recovery at Ground Zero and later at the landfill to identify belongings and remains and the unique emotional toll of trying to identify those we lost. After 9/11, Tom was assigned to the elite FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) for which he held a Top Secret/SCI clearance. As he says in the interview, “The responsibility was enormous…You have to prevent 9/11 from ever happening again. You are now responsible not only for New York, but the world.”While with JTTF, Tom was deployed in 2009 to the war zone in Afghanistan to coordinate the rescue of a New York Times journalist who had been kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda affiliated group. Tom and the JTTF team were able to create and execute a plan to bring this American hostage home. Then in 2018, Tom's JTTF partner alerted him to a school shooter threat at the high school in upstate NY where Tom was living and working. The high school was the very one his son and daughter were attending. Tom and his partner investigated and built a case that led to the arrest of the would-be shooter finding, among other evidence, the list of students he planned to kill on the last day of school, all of whom were friends of Tom's kids.We close by reflecting on his 30-year career, the inspiration he drew from his NYPD Detective father, the support of his wife and family. And just how much a thank you means. We of course talk about their true crime podcast the Gold Shields Show which Tom co-hosts with his good buddy retired NYPD Sgt. Dan Murphy. They reached their 100th episode in 2024 and launched Season Three in January 2025 with some incredible guests. You can find them on all podcast platforms. Links below. If you haven't already, be sure to check out Part One of my conversation with Tom. We cover the early days of his career with NYPD starting in 1990 on patrol in Harlem. Within a few years he joined the anti-crime team and later Narcotics where he became a detective. He then moved into Gang Investigations in 1998 and then the Robbery Unit in the Bronx in 1999.I want to add that Tom was recently inducted into the National Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame and presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Retired NYPD Detective Louis Balestrieri shares his story of growing up alongside mafia "wise guys" and his path to taking down organized crime in Operation Wasteland. In an era marked by rampant violence, homicides, crack epidemics, and out-of-control robberies, Louie found himself at a crossroads—raised in a neighborhood where mobsters and cops walked the same streets. He opens up about how he could have easily ended up on the wrong side of the law, but instead played a key role in the largest organized crime bust in NYC history—Operation Wasteland, a case that unraveled the Mafia's stranglehold on NYC's private sanitation waste industry.Don't miss this insider's look into the Mafia's shady dealings and the rigged system they controlled and still control to this day.
Ep. 66 - Rescuing an American journalist kidnapped in Afghanistan, thwarting a school shooter, responding to Ground Zero on 9/11 - NYPD Det. Tom Smith (Ret.) did all of it in his 30 years with NYPD. Following in his NYPD Detective father's footsteps, Tom joined NYPD in 1990 and started in patrol in Harlem. Within a few years he joined the anti-crime team and later Narcotics where he became a detective. He then moved into Gang Investigations in 1998 and then the Robbery unit in the Bronx in 2009.It was during his time there that 9/11 happened. We will talk about how the day, weeks and months unfolded for him. After 9/11, Tom was assigned to the elite FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) for the remaining 17 years of his career. He held a Top Secret/SCI clearance, conducted briefings for representatives of the highest levels of government and traveled to 18 countries to handle complex terrorism investigations. In 2009, Tom was deployed to the war zone in Afghanistan to coordinate the rescue of a New York Times journalist who had been kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda affiliated group. Tom and the JTTF team were able to create and execute a plan to bring this American hostage home. We also cover the recent shooting death in December 2024 of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan. In his time as detective with NYPD, Tom investigated homicides. I wanted to get his take on how this played out from an investigation point of view.Tom is co-host of the podcast Gold Shields with his buddy retired NYPD Sgt. Dan Murphy. They draw on their considerable law enforcement experience and knowledge to bring listeners the inside story on large scale often well-known investigations and missions by detectives and military operators, as well as criminal behavior, personal stories of survival and more. In this gripping episode of Warrior of Truth, Kelly sits down with retired NYPD detective Mike Codella, whose two-decade career spanned some of New York City's most turbulent times. Codella's experience isn't confined to the standard beat; he's been undercover, worked in plainclothes, and led as a detective sergeant through the 1980s and '90s, facing the city's darkest challenges head-on.Kelly and Mike dive into the unsettling surge of random, unprovoked assaults in NYC, discussing possible drivers behind this spike in violence and contrasting the police response now to what he witnessed in his years on the force. Kelly, a recent survivor of such an attack, brings a personal perspective to the conversation, making this dialogue both urgent and deeply personal.Mike confirms Kelly's theory that city and NYPD officials may be underreporting crime statistics to give the appearance of a safer city. He explains how simple tactics, like downgrading the classification of crimes or selectively choosing which incidents are logged, can make significant crime levels appear much lower on paper, all while staying under the radar.Mike also talks about how today's police face far more challenges than he did, with restrictions like “no frisk” laws and reduced protections that make it harder to curb crime effectively and ensure their own safety on the streets. But the revelations don't stop there. Mike shares one of his most haunting cases—an investigation that uncovered shocking ties to satanic cults operating in the shadows of New York. The connections were chilling, linking to high-profile cases like the disappearance of Etan Patz and David Berkowitz, infamously known as the Son of Sam, who was allegedly involved with this cult. Mike reveals a side of NYC many have only seen in films, with disturbing accounts of clandestine mansion parties reminiscent of Eyes Wide Shut, involving some of the city's most powerful figures.Brace yourself for an unfiltered exploration of the city's underbelly, past and present, as Kelly and Mike shine a light on the harsh realities lurking just beneath the surface.Watch this episode on YouTubePurchase Mike's Book AlphavilleFollow Kelly:https://kellydillon.com/https://www.instagram.com/kelldillon/https://www.facebook.com/kellydillontv/https://twitter.com/kelly_dillonhttp://tiktok.com/@kelldillonThe truth will truly set us free. Embracing honesty in our lives not only transforms us individually but has the potential to elevate the consciousness of the world around us. Send us a textHave you ever wondered what it would be like to be a female detective in the mean streets of New York City? Today's guest, Marique Bartoldus, is here to tell us all about it. She's a retired 20-year veteran of the NYPD and an author! Marique attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Police Science. Shortly after graduating, she was sworn into the NYPD, and after six months of training in the Police Academy, was assigned to Transit District 20. After a year, she was reassigned to Patrol Borough Queens South's 105th Precinct. She was assigned to multiple units within the Precinct including Patrol, Conditions, SNEU, Anti-Crime, and Field Intelligence, then left the 105th Precinct and became one of the first detectives assigned to the Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad, where she investigated dog fighting and animal cruelty complaints throughout New York City. She returned to the 105th Precinct where she ended her career assigned to the Intelligence Bureau, investigating illegal firearm and narcotics sales and possession. She effected 400 arrests and executed hundreds of search warrants during her distinguished twenty-year career. Marique recently published Twenty and Out: A Compilation of Chaos Experienced while serving 20 years in the New York City Police Department, and I can't recommend this book enough. Please enjoy this entertaining and honest conversation about being a big-city detective, through the eyes of someone who actually did the job. But while he was waging a war on the streets, his uncle, Nicky Black Grancio, was waging a mafia war as the third Colombo family civil war heated up and bodies started to drop. Thanks for joining me for this bonus episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast. I wanted to talk about something that has been bothering me for some time. I feel that we have lost our way in policing in America today and the victims of crime are paying the price. When was the last time you heard someone in pop culture talking about “Victim Rights?” You certainly hear them talking about police corruption or defunding the police. But never about the thousands of innocent people who are the victims of crime every day in this country. The cops have been handcuffed and are not allowed to do their jobs, and the people who are living in the most vulnerable areas of the country are paying that price. I want to make it very clear that I support the men and women in blue who literally risk their lives every day protecting us, the Constitution, and our way of life. We must do more than wearing a t-shirt or quietly telling a cop, “Thanks for your service.” We must elect individuals who actually want to do something about the crime in this country, not give vague ideologies or theories that don't work or rehash crime-fighting strategies that never worked. We must support those who support the cops, even when it is not popular, but it's the right thing to do.On the show today I'm joined by a friend of the show, retired NYPD Detective, Vic Ferrari, and retired NYPD Captain Peter Moreno. Detective Ferrari and Captain Moreno have over forty-eight years of police experience in street patrol, investigations, and police upper management of the New York Police Department. They have seen crime fighting/reduction strategies come and go and have seen what works and doesn't work. We are going to discuss the pros and cons of Broken Windows, Data-Driven Policing sometimes called, Hot Spot Policing, and Community Oriented Policing. This show is not a bitch session, and we try our best not to be too political in this show, I wanted to enlighten you as to what actually works when it comes to fighting crime. Thanks for joining us and I welcome your input regarding this special bonus episode. If you have a better solution, we are all ears! Check out Peter's Security Company, K.H.
