Come join me on a hike on a beautiful summer Sunday in Southern Oregon! This week we continue diving into Of Water and the Spirit, an incredible recounting of a westernized African man's initiation into the esoteric knowledge of his tribe, and discuss the beautiful cycles of birth and death.
Audio #1: Of Water and the Spirit
A couple weeks ago we wrote about Madison musician Luke Bassuener's latest release under his solo moniker Asumaya, Of Water, Land, & Sky. The album is constructed mostly from field recordings of birds and Wisconsin wetlands, and grew out of a multidisciplinary arts residency of the same name. Setting aside Asumaya's usual looped array of percussion, bass, vocals, and thumb piano, Bassuener has instead created a set of rhythmic interpretations of the natural world."This album was also kind of just a challenge—to see how much would it sound like music if I only used those things?" Bassuener says.Bassuener spoke with us on the April 16 edition of Conduit, a livestream collaboration between Tone Madison, Communication, and UnderBelly. He'll be performing on April 17 in a livestream event on Arts + Literature Laboratory's Facebook page, which will also feature art and poetry from others involved in Of Water, Land, & Sky.Bassuener is also a public-school art teacher in Madison. One of his ongoing projects is helping his students at the west side's Crestwood Elementary create animated short films based on myths from across different cultures. One of those, The Weaver Girl And The Cowherd, was scheduled to screen in this year's canceled Wisconsin Film Festival. It's available to watch online through the festival's Big Streams, Little Folks program. You can see more work from Crestwood students on YouTube. We also talked about Bassuener's work in the band Disaster Passport, which has created something of a local sensation over the past year with its original score for Godfrey Reggio's experimental documentary Koyaanisqatsi. The next Conduit session is on Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m., and our guest will be Dan Shafer of the Milwaukee-based politics newsletter The Recombobulation Area. On April 30, we'll talk with Carlee Latimer of the Madison Public Library's Bubbler program, and on May 7, our guest will be artist Kay LeClaire. On. To join each week's conversation, Venmo $1 to info@communicationmadison.com and include your email address in the note. The money will be donated to a non-profit or artist of our guest's choosing, and we'll email you a Zoom link for the meeting.

We're about to head out for our holiday break, but not before we deliver another fun-filled episode! This week we're covering the phenomenal zombie musical ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE! In our FIRST CHOP, we'll run through some of our favorite and most notable horror films of 2019! Our DISCMEMBERMENT will leave your stocking empty, but those wallets probably needed a break anyway! Then we'll grab a cup of eggnog and take a look at ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE. This horror comedy musical burst onto the scene last year and is already a fan favorite. We'd also like to take a moment to thank our wonderful fans for listening to us ramble week after week, and all of our gracious interviewees that have appeared on the show this year. We look forward to many more fantastic episodes to come. We love hearing from our fans! This week we continue our tradition of holiday-themed horror with CHRISTMAS EVIL (1980)! This film is not what it first appears, and we think you're going to love it! In our FIRST CHOP, we talk GHOST GIRL GREETINGS and HORRIFIED! The Tim climbs upon his very large soapbox to discuss his recent viewing of CHILD'S PLAY (2019)! We'll wrap things up with a quick NJ Horror Con guest update! Our DISCMEMBERMENT holds a few stocking stuffers you're definitely going to want on your list. In fact, we have not one, but TWO Picks of the Week! Then we grab a cup of spiked eggnog and check out CHRISTMAS EVIL aka BETTER WATCH OUT. This peculiar slice of cinema appears to be just another "evil Santa" slasher but turns into something far more disturbing. At times scary, heartwarming, and sad, it's no wonder this film has become a cult favorite among many fans including celebs like John Waters. Come check it out! We love hearing from our fans! Happy Holidays everyone! The season is finally upon us, and with it our first round of Christmas horror. This week we're taking a look at an underrated dark comedy gem, SANTA'S SLAY (2005)! In our unannounced FIRST CHOP, we go a little off-topic discussing Christmas movies, and then hit a fun little DISCMEMBERMENT that packs a few stocking stuffers you'll want to add to your list. Then we'll have our annual CIVIL GORE HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE to give you some ideas for the horror fans and family in your life! Then it's time to pour a cup of eggnog and discuss SANTA'S SLAY. An evil Santa movie from a first-time director starring a wrestler and a cast of mostly Jewish actors should not work on paper. But in reality it's a highly entertaining, completely over-the-top horror comedy that delivers thrills, kills, and a healthy dose of Christmas cheer! Join us as we kick off the holiday season Civil Gore style! We love hearing from our fans! We've got a packed episode this week as we discuss the new film MARLA from writer/director Lisa Van Dam-Bates! But first, Tim disappears from our FIRST CHOP with THE VANISHING (1988). We also check out ERASERHEAD and HOUSE from 1977, then go way back with I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE and THE LEOPARD MAN from 1943! Brian enters THE POOL (2018) and tell us what he thought of MIDSOMMAR! We'll also wrap our our 3rd annual CIVIL GORE HORROR MOVIE CHALLENGE with some discussion on some of our favorite (and least favorite films) we watched this October. Special thanks to everyone who participated in the challenge. It was a blast and we'll definitely do it again next year! Our DISCMEMBERMENT features an eclectic collection of discs that you'll want to check out. The post-Halloween Blu-ray slump may already be over! Then we sit down with a discussion with LISA VAN DAM-BATES, writer, director, and star of new horror film MARLA. She'll tell us about the challenges of making a film and what inspired this frightening tale. Of Water, Rocks And Resilience by Gila Ross
This weeks episode is all about drink and drugs. What’s the appeal, why people do it and what is considered ‘acceptable’. We discuss all of this and even give stories about our own relationship and experiences with them. In a society where work hard and then get absolutely mortaled is the norm (hashtag work hard play harder), we question the real psychological route and effect. So grab a cheeky glass OF WATER and come and have a chat

"For the Dagara, cosmology begins with the story of creation. In the beginning there was no earth as we know it. In its place was a burning planet, a ball of fire combusting at high speed. Therefore, fire is the first element of the Dagara wheel. Fire is present in everything, and everything needs fire. It was not until this moving and burning sphere encountered a huge body of water that things began to change. Water became the second element in the cosmological wheel. The shock resulting from the collision of fire and water not only slowed the combustion process, but also chased fire into the underworld, leaving the surface as a hot steamy place, fertile for the breeding of all kinds of life forms. This surface, hospitable to life, is what is known as earth, which constitutes the third elemental principal of the Dagara cosmological wheel. The various hard components of the earth provide structure and connection and are known as mineral or stone, the fourth element in the cosmological.wheel. Meanwhile, a steam of great density formed the atmosphere around the earth. (These images translate imperfectly into Western terms; think of them as poetic rather than scientific descriptions.) As the steam expanded, its pressure began to subside. The reduction of atmospheric pressure was conducive to the birth of life, and thus the fifth element, vegetative nature, came into being." Meanwhile, a steam of great density formed the atmosphere around the earth. (These images translate imperfectly into Western terms; think of them as poetic rather than scientific descriptions.) As the steam expanded, its pressure began to subside. The reduction of atmospheric pressure was conducive to the birth of life, and thus the fifth element, vegetative nature, came into being." "We find in nature everything we need to be whole. But the gap between us and nature is growing bigger instead of smaller---we humans should not alter anything in nature because we run the risk of losing life-giving information hidden in it. As a consequence, illness is a distancing from the model of health offered by nature and any stuckness in our lives is due to a piece of nature having falling off from the inner structure of their existence. No one can survive without nature! Most of us have been visually conditioned to see the world within a limited spectrum, and for each person, this is the spectrum into which every object must fit. The wider the visual horizon of a person, the closer he or she is to seeing things as they are. After all, reality is malleable, manufacturable, and therefore transferable. In other words, we all see the same tree because we are bound by an agreement. But those who can break the agreement are able to see more closely into the core of being. For example indigenous "magicians" are people who are not bound by consensus perception, hence their ability to see through all living things." Of Water and The Spirit - Dr. Malidoma Patrice Some' With Dr. Malidoma Patrice Some as a guest at the home of Baba Wesley Gray and his wife Dr. Dora Gray aka Queenmother Spirit Change and then on our show that aired on 10/23/10,we discussed two of his international best selling books, The Healing Wisdom of Africa and Of Water and The Spirit Join Baba Wesley this evening, as he reads excerpts from the two books, and find out about ritual, magic and initiation in the life of an African Shaman.
In this fascinating, detailed journey through the traditional healing practices of the Dagara people of West Africa, shaman and scholar Dr.Malidoma Some, introduces Western readers to the rituals that breathe meaning into the daily lives of African seekers. Educated in the West,Dr.Some holds three masters and two Ph.Ds.and is the author of four books, including his autobiography:"Of Water and The Spirit".and"The Healing Wisdom of Africa". .Dr.Some' is an initiated Elder and shaman or high priest, he expounds on the significance of"Initiating Change". As a house quest of BabaWesley Gray and his wife SpiritChange,Dr.Malidoma Some',introduced the Grays to the African Yam and other vegetables along with the diet and health customs of his community, the Dagara people of Burkiina Faso,West Africa."There is no doubt that,at this time in history,Western civilization is suffering from a great sickness of the soul. The West'sprogressive turning away from functioning spiritual values;its total disregard for the environment and the protection of natural resources;the violence of inner cities with their problems of poverty, drugs, andcrime;spiraling unemployment and economic disarray;and growing intolerance toward people of color and the values of other cultures all of these trends,if unchecked, will eventually bring about a terrible self-destruction.In the face of all this global chaos, the only possible hope is self-transformation.Unless we find new ways that can touch and transform the heart and soul deeply, both indigenous cultures and those in the West will continue to fade away, dismayed that all the wonders of technology, all the many philosophical'isms'and all the planning of the global corporations will be helpless to reverse this trend."Dr.Malidoma Patrice Some Be sure to visit sites:- www.drumsofchangedotcom and www.worldwidehealthandwealthmovement.com

Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We discuss news that listener Jason tells us about - new stone circle in Australia and a similar one being constructed near us, at Knockhatch. The Australian Standing Stones began as an ambitious project by a small, dedicated group of citizens who wanted to mark Glen Innes's Celtic heritage. It was in Australia's 1988 Bicentenary Year that the Celtic Council of Australia developed the idea of erecting a national monument to honour all Celtic peoples who helped pioneer Australia. Glen Innes responded with a 46-page submission for Australian Standing Stones, inspired by the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland's Orkneys. Australian Standing Stones Alignment Details Sussex Peace Circle Peace Stones the Out of the Ordinary Festival Kesh Jig by The Connemara Stone Company The Connemara Stone Company have been together since 1995, and all played previously in various Folk-Rock Groups, which is soon obvious when you see them live on stage. Right from the start they decided to rearrange Traditional Celtic music into modern Folk-Rock songs and tunes. Apart from that, it was very important to them to bring Folk music to the younger generation. To their surprise not only did the younger generation like their music. This was more as apparent as they played a concert with “Wishbone Ash”, the audience being (putting it mildly) a little bit older. They have kindly given us permission to play a wonderful piece of foot-tapping music, called the Kesh Jig from their album, Birds & Beasts. See the Myspace page and hear more music or visit their homepage, Connemara Stone. Lughnasadh: The Land Gives Birth by Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson have collected essays from Celtic scholars to form a fascinating book that helps to explain the difference between Celtic fact (what we actually know) from Celtic fiction (what we speculate). Sadly, the book has never been published and Francine passed away in 2003. Shae has enabled the book to be published on the web. Francine Nicholson, M.A., was a librarian in New England and scholar of all things Celtic. The loss of her passing, perhaps appropriately on 1 February 2003 (Imbolc), is poignantly crystallised by fellow Celtic scholar, David Stifter: 'It is very sad news to hear that Francine Nicholson has left us. She had a vast and astounding erudition and knowledge of Celtic mythology and folklore, and her contributions . . . were a great source of enrichment and information. I feel it as a heavy loss that she will no longer contribute to our discussions.' Lughnasadh by Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find his music on iTunes, Woven Wheat Whispers or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. We'd like to thank him for giving us permission to play this track for you. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor page on this website. White Rose of Avalon by Kelley Heckart Kelley Heckart lives in Arizona with her husband, Michael, and their two dogs, Hercules and Xena. Kelley was born with a vivid imagination and a fascination with ancient history and the supernatural. Though she resides on the earthly realm, she always has one foot firmly planted in the otherworldly realm of mystical creatures and magic. She has written numerous short stories and song lyrics. This is her first novel. In addition to writing books, she also enjoys playing and writing music, and designing crosses out of driftwood. Currently, she is working on a sequel to Of Water and Dragons. Of Water and Dragons can be found on her website, www.kelleyheckart.com, www.amazon.com, www.booksurge.com and many other online stores. If your local bookstore doesn't have it in stock, it can easily be ordered. With the land falling into Saxon hands, the Christian monks make a pact with Morgaine, Queen of the Faeries. She promises to give them a High King who will unite the Britons against the Saxons if he takes a queen from the faery realm. She hopes this will restore the Goddess faith, bringing Avalon back to its rightful place and not hidden within the mists. Lancelot is sent to guard the future High King, but when a love potion falls into the wrong hands, all seems lost. Gwenhwyfar is the only hope for the future, but betrayal, revenge and forbidden love surround her, threatening to destroy the lives of four people, and send Britain and Avalon into ruins. Thank you to Kelley for contributing her story to the show - we can't wait to read this lusty tale. For more information about Kelley and her books, see our Contributor Page. Warrior Queen by Kellianna Kellianna is an accomplished musician and performer worldwide. Her CD's , Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music.
