As TODAY is the one year anniversary of the inaugural event of RU Center for Psychoanalysis, I have turned the very first RU Center event into an episode of RU POD. Rendering Unconscious episode 411. This episode is the very first event for Rendering Unconscious Center for Psychoanalysis, which celebrates the book The Queerness of Psychoanalysis (2025) and the launch of RU Center. To begin, I outline some of the goals of RU Center for Psychoanalysis, highlighting upcoming courses and events, including my Introduction to Psychoanalysis class. Myriam then presents her chapter, “Emptiness is the Cure for Psychoanalysis,” from The Queerness of Psychoanalysis (2025) in which she looks at the work of Swiss psychoanalyst Danielle Quinodoz, who wrote up an early trans* affirmative case study. Some themes of the discussion that follows include the alienation experienced by trans individuals in the field of psychoanalysis and the potential for transness to challenge rigid norms, gender and otherwise, emphasizing the need for a trans-affirmative psychoanalysis and the importance of questioning societal norms. I am posting this event for everyone as a celebration of the official opening of RU Center for Psychoanalysis! In the 12th episode of the Fenris Wolf podcast, Carl Abrahamsson explores the significance of tangible magical experiences and the interplay between the material world and the unseen. He critiques two extreme viewpoints: world-deniers, who see the physical realm as an illusion, and thoroughgoing materialists, who reduce all experiences to mere sensory data. Abrahamsson argues that both perspectives miss the richness of human experience. He emphasizes that the senses are not just tools for data collection; they are gateways to deeper understanding and connection with the world. By truly engaging with our senses, we can appreciate the vividness of life without clinging to it or dismissing its significance. The magical path involves recognizing both the material and the mysterious, where the body serves as an instrument of contact. Ultimately, he advocates for a balanced approach that acknowledges the reality of the world while remaining open to its inherent strangeness, suggesting that a truly magical life embraces both dimensions. On this episode, Christos discusses the origins and themes of his new book False Negatives: Tilted Takes on a World in Flux, a collection of philosophical essays examining truth, evidence, and meaning in the post-truth age. The book, a series of vignettes written as part of an experiment on Open Democracy, navigates the shifting boundaries of politics, science, history, art, and human understanding. Christos delves into the complexities of truth, narratives, and identity; the impact of COVID-19 on personal and professional life; and the role of choice and interpretation in art. He also touches upon the philosophical implications of psychoanalysis and challenges of navigating uncertainty in a rapidly changing world. In an era when “alternative facts” shape public discourse and technology reshapes what we believe to be true, Christos invites us to reconsider how we know what we know. Through vivid examples—from DeepFake videos and AI-generated art to Freud's dreams and Gödel's theorem—he explores the fragile relationship between truth and interpretation, reason and belief, evidence and experience. The Fenris Wolf Podcast, Episode 11

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2026 23:05

In episode 11 of the Fenris Wolf podcast, titled "The Earworms of My Mind," Carl Abrahamsson delves into the profound and often overlooked power of music, particularly its evocative capabilities and potential for magical use. Abrahamsson highlights how music is typically perceived as a passive experience, where listeners curate playlists or choose songs to set moods for relaxation or productivity. However, he suggests that music can also be a dynamic tool for emotional processing and magical practice. Abrahamsson discusses the phenomenon of Involuntary Musical Imagery (INMI), commonly known as earworms, where certain songs or tunes spontaneously surface in the mind and persistently loop. He notes that this involuntary recall can occur due to various triggers, including emotional states, contextual reminders, or even fatigue and stress, which may weaken cognitive inhibition. The brain's default mode network plays a crucial role in this process, replaying stored musical patterns similar to how it would complete familiar sentences. The podcast further explores the unique ways music is processed in the brain, engaging multiple systems, including the auditory cortex, cerebellum, basal ganglia, and limbic system—the latter being key to emotional memory. Abrahamsson points out that music's ability to encode autobiographical memories is particularly powerful, with songs capable of evoking vivid memories and emotions from the past. This phenomenon is evident in individuals with Alzheimer's disease, who often retain the ability to recognize and sing along to familiar songs despite significant memory loss. Abrahamsson highlights the historical exploitation of music for political and commercial purposes. Political movements have utilized campaign songs and anthems to foster emotional connections and group identity among supporters. Totalitarian regimes, such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, leveraged music to create a sense of community and ideological alignment. Contemporary advertising similarly employs music to evoke emotional responses and enhance brand recognition, using catchy jingles and familiar melodies to create involuntary associations with products. The discussion transitions to Muzak, a company that pioneered the use of background music in commercial settings to influence consumer behavior subtly. Abrahamsson reflects on the controversial nature of Muzak, which some critics view as manipulative and emotionally bland, while others argue it serves a functional role in enhancing environments. Exploring the psychological implications of music, Abrahamsson distinguishes between general exposure to catchy tunes and more profound personal connections through "Signifiers of the Psyche." He encourages listeners to reflect on the songs that linger in their minds, suggesting these may convey messages from their subconscious. Abrahamsson proposes a creative approach to utilizing music for personal empowerment. He suggests crafting one's own "hyper-jingles" or mantras that encapsulate specific goals or emotions, thereby reclaiming the musical territory often dominated by external influences. By consciously creating and repeating catchy phrases set to melodies, individuals can harness music as a magical tool for self-transformation. Finally, he discusses the concept of habituation, where repeated exposure to the same musical stimuli may diminish its effectiveness. He emphasizes the importance of refreshing one's musical repertoire, both in magical practices and everyday life, to maintain optimal emotional and psychological responses. The episode concludes with an invitation to listeners to explore the resources linked in the show notes, encouraging continued engagement with the themes discussed. On this episode, Avgi and Iris discuss their experiences with, criticisms of, and ultimately resignation from the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). This conversation highlights the German Psychoanalytic Association's historical ties to Nazi Germany and the IPA's problematic stance concerning global political issues, particularly the genocide in Palestine. Both Iris and Avgi emphasize the need for psychoanalysis to address political realities and call for resignations from the IPA to challenge its claim of neutrality and liberal tokenism, ultimately advocating for a more radical and politically engaged psychoanalytic practice. In this podcast episode titled "The Magician's Paradox," Carl Abrahamsson delves into the complex interplay between detachment and engagement in the pursuit of personal and spiritual growth. He poses a fundamental question: how does one navigate the tension between inward focus on self-development and outward engagement with the world's suffering? Abrahamsson begins by acknowledging that those who glimpse the hidden structures of reality often find themselves at a crossroads, faced with the choice between two seductive paths. One path leads inward, emphasizing personal growth and the preservation of one's inner energies, while the other compels individuals to engage with the external world and address human suffering. The challenge lies in finding a balance between these two extremes. He critiques the concept of detachment, arguing that it should not be equated with apathy or indifference. Instead, true detachment is portrayed as a disciplined emotional withdrawal that protects one's inner world from external turmoil. This perspective resonates with the archetype of the sage, who retreats from worldly affairs to cultivate personal purity and wisdom. However, Abrahamsson cautions against romanticizing this detachment, suggesting it may mask a cowardice that allows one to evade the moral responsibilities of engagement. Simultaneously, he examines the opposite extreme—an unbridled passion for activism that assumes individual actions can effect significant change. He illustrates this point with historical examples, including a ruler who sought to impose perfect justice but ultimately created new injustices. This reflects the butterfly effect, where well-intentioned actions can lead to unforeseen and sometimes detrimental consequences. Abrahamsson proposes a third way, which he calls "compassionate restraint" or "loving non-interference." Unlike the sage's detachment or the reformer's fervor, this approach recognizes the importance of working within the deeper structures of reality. The metaphor of the magician is introduced, who seeks to facilitate change not through direct action but by aligning with transformative energies. The magician does not impose solutions but serves as a conduit for genuine change, emphasizing the power of presence and resonance over direct intervention. The discussion shifts to the importance of personal example as a means of enacting change. A person who embodies integrity and compassion can inspire others without necessarily preaching or striving for conversion. This silent authority of presence can awaken authenticity in others, creating ripples of transformation. However, Abrahamsson warns of the potential for spiritual narcissism, where individuals conflate their inner peace with actual change in the world. He emphasizes the necessity of self-examination, urging individuals to reflect on their motivations for detachment or engagement. The podcast highlights the complexity of human action, suggesting that we cannot fully know the consequences of our choices, whether they involve action or inaction. Ultimately, Abrahamsson advocates for a stance of permanent uncertainty combined with commitment. By acknowledging the limitations of our understanding, we can engage with the world authentically, accepting that our choices matter, even if their impact is not readily apparent. The episode concludes by suggesting that living consciously, authentically, and with integrity is the best way to navigate the complexities of life, recognizing that the path is fraught with uncertainty and potential for self-deception. In episode 9 of the Fenris Wolf Podcast, Carl Abrahamsson reflects on the significance of beginnings, particularly the start of a new year. He explores the human tendency to seek meaning in the arbitrary calendar reset and acknowledges the ancient narratives surrounding beginnings and endings, such as the cosmic egg and the phoenix. Despite our modern cynicism, he highlights the persistent hope that accompanies our New Year resolutions, suggesting that this hope is a powerful force for transformation. Abrahamsson emphasizes that time is a human construct, and while the universe is indifferent to our desires, our attention shapes our reality. Intentions set for the new year are commitments to allocate our energy and attention to what truly matters. He argues against the notion of destiny, advocating for the freedom to create our own meaning and choices. As the year unfolds, he notes a growing desire for authenticity and a shift away from outdated narratives of progress. He encourages listeners to embrace the creative potential of their choices and to be gentle with themselves amid failures. Ultimately, he invites us to recognize our power to shape our reality and to approach the year ahead with curiosity and kindness. We also discuss our book collections, the challenges of analytic training, the significance of unconscious generational transmission, and the need for interdisciplinary engagement in psychoanalysis. We emphasize the importance of democratizing psychoanalytic knowledge and the potential of developing online resources, utilizing platforms such as Substack and YouTube. Owen Hewitson is a psychoanalyst in private practice. As well as running LacanOnline.com, Owen is a contributing author to a number of books and journals on psychoanalysis including Reading Lacan's Ecrits (Routledge, 2022), Reading Lacan's Seminar VIII (Palgrave, 2020), Resistance and the Practice of Rationality (Cambridge, 2013) and Reading Lacan's Autres Écrits (Routledge, forthcoming), among others. https://www.lacanonline.com News & events: Sunday, January 18th, Mary is leading a 5-session class taught online via Zoom – Projections: Death Scenes in Cinema hosted by Morbid Anatomy Museum. https://www.morbidanatomy.org/classes/p/projections-death-scenes-in-cinema-with-mary-wild-september Tuesday, January 20th, Mary will be presenting her work on Lynchian Women on David Lynch's birthday hosted by RU Center for Psychoanalysis. https://rucenterforpsychoanalysis.substack.com/p/coming-up-tuesday-january-20th-lynchian Wednesday, January 21st, the Freud Museum London hosts Mary for Projections: Contemporary Female Filmmakers. https://www.freud.org.uk/event/projections-contemporary-female-filmmakers/ Looking forward to seeing you all for the next installment of An Introduction to Psychoanalysis on Saturday, February 7th. https://rucenterforpsychoanalysis.substack.com/p/one-month-til-intro-to-psychoanalysis If you're in London, I'll be at the Freud Museum in-person Wednesday, February 25th with my husband Carl Abrahamsson for Surreal Secrets of the Psyche: The Creative Zeitgeist of Psychoanalysis, Film and the Avant-Garde. https://www.freud.org.uk/event/surreal-secrets-of-the-psyche-the-creative-zeitgeist-of-psychoanalysis-film-and-the-avant-garde/ Wednesday, February 18th, we have Mikita Brottman presenting Images from the Id: The Strange World of Psychic Photographer Ted Serios. https://rucenterforpsychoanalysis.substack.com/p/images-from-the-id-the-strange-world Rendering Unconscious is also a book series: Rendering Unconscious: Psychoanalytic Perspectives, Politics & Poetry vols 1:1 & 1:2 (Trapart Books, 2024): https://amzn.to/3N6XKIl The song at the end of this episode is "Celebrity" from the album "Infiltrate" by Vanessa Sinclair and Pete Murphy: https://petemurphy.bandcamp.com/album/infiltrate-21 Enjoy! S/he describes he/r experiments with archetypal characters in the 1960s, leading to a realization of the theatrical nature of human presentation. S/he delves into he/r work utilizing shamanic techniques, physical stress, and rituals to reprogram the nervous system, including extreme experiences like being wrapped in wolf skins and suspended in a coffin. The Fenris Wolf Podcast, Episode 7

This episode – “Dark Gods of Modernity: Why We Still Need Monsters” – argues that our age is full of monsters, even if we pretend we've outgrown them—and that we actually need them. The episode starts with the old role of monsters: they used to patrol the edges of maps and myths, marking what was dangerous or sacred. Dragons, demons, trickster gods gave shape to fears and taboos; they were ways of saying, “There is something here we don't understand, but it matters.” Modernity claimed to banish them with science and rationalism, yet they've only changed costume. Today's monsters show up as serial killers in prestige TV, pandemics and plagues, rogue AIs, shadowy elites, conspiracy cabals, zombies and apocalypses in endless variations. Even in a secular culture, we keep inventing figures that condense dread, guilt, and awe. The episode's core claim is that monsters are how a society metabolizes what it cannot face directly. Climate change, systemic racism, algorithmic exploitation, ecological collapse—these are slow, sprawling, and hard to narrate. So we displace them into sharper figures: evil billionaires, satanic rings, killer robots, viral hordes. Sometimes those stories illuminate real power dynamics; often they simplify and mislead. Either way, they signal where the pressure is. We also carry personal “dark gods”: intrusive thoughts, addictions, forbidden desires, depressive spirals. Treating them only as malfunctions misses something. Like mythic monsters, they guard thresholds—unresolved grief, disowned anger, unlived capacities. The episode suggests that outright demonization backfires; what we refuse to acknowledge returns in cruder, more destructive form. Rather than trying to erase monsters, we need better ones: images and narratives that help us see genuine dangers (like fossil capital, surveillance, supremacist ideologies) without collapsing into paranoia or purity crusades. Monsters, in this view, are tools: creative, symbolic containers for terror and shadow that can either trap us in fear or guide us toward more honest contact with what's wrong—and what still might be transformed. THANK YOU for listening! This episode of Rendering Unconscious is a lecture by Dr. Steven Reisner “On the Dance of Occult and Unconscious in Freud” given at Morbid Anatomy Museum, NYC, October 2016, as part of a lecture series hosted by Dr. Vanessa Sinclair on Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult. In this lecture, Dr. Reisner explores Freud's interest in the occult and its implications for psychoanalytic theory. Reisner argues that Freud's curiosity extended beyond sexuality to include phenomena beyond sensory perception. He discusses Freud's experiments with telepathy and thought transference, emphasizing the importance of integrating denied knowledge. Reisner also highlights Freud's cautious approach to disseminating such knowledge, balancing scientific rigor with public perception. Additionally, Reisner links Freud's theories to contemporary issues like resistance to knowledge and the impact of narcissistic or traumatized parents on their children's sensitivity to occult phenomena. This talk was first presented at a conference organized by Dr. Vanessa Sinclair and Carl Abrahamsson, exploring the intersections of Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult, held in London, May 2016. The Fenris Wolf 9 is a book of collected papers from this conference anthologized by Sinclair and Abrahamsson. https://amzn.to/3XXcwnd Steven Reisner, PhD is a psychoanalyst and political activist in New York.
