Money is tight this holiday season so EJ and Rory are forced to babysit Leo for his father Shane Purdy. There's only one catch, Leo would like to review the flick “BETTER WATCH OUT” (aka babysitter nightmare fuel) and then test out all of the Home Alone traps on the FREAKQUELS gang to see if they work the way they do in the movie. Will Rory and EJ put themselves through terrible abuse for a minimal amount of money? Eh, a buck's a buck.
In this festive episode of *Cutting Deep into Horror*, hosts Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi reunite to discuss the chilling 2016 Christmas horror film, *Better Watch Out*. As the holiday countdown crescendos, the duo offers a deep exploration of the movie's unsettling narrative, juxtaposing typical Christmas warmth with dark themes of obsession, violence, and the often hidden scars of childhood trauma. The episode opens with Henrique sharing his longstanding tradition of expressing feelings during the holidays, a sentiment that suddenly contrasts with the grotesque events of the film they are about to dissect. Rachael joins in with her customary cheer, setting the tone for a night that will delve into the darker side of Christmas cinema while reckoning with heavy topics like trauma and mental health. As they situate the film within a broader context of Christmas horror, the hosts introduce listeners to the lead character, Luke, a seemingly innocent 12-year-old with sinister intentions towards his babysitter, Ashley, played by Olivia DeJonge. The pair dissects the layers of Luke's character, illustrating the blurred lines between childhood innocence and emerging psychopathy while discussing the film's various clichés and themes. They share laughs recalling tropes established in classics like *Home Alone*, and how *Better Watch Out* flips those expectations on their head, transforming what could be a light-hearted affair into a gripping tale of lurking menace.Henrique and Rachael transport listeners through the film's narrative, recounting key moments—from Luke's misguided affections toward Ashley to a series of unfortunate events that quickly spiral into violence. Rachael highlights the tension in scenes where Ashley's attempts to maintain control devolve as the children begin to reveal their true natures. The hosts cover the rise of Luke's dark humor and cold calculations, leading to brutal moments that leave the audience in stunned silence. The meticulous details in his planning are highlighted as the conversation draws close to the shocking climax. With palpable intensity, the conversation intensifies when discussing the violent escalation that ensues, particularly the twisted finale and the chilling aftermath. Their commentary opens up discussions about the psychological implications of the characters' actions, the film's dark humor, and the commentary it makes on how childhood trauma can manifest in malignant ways. With visceral storytelling and layered characters, *Better Watch Out* stirs deep discussions about morality, innocence lost, and the societal taboos surrounding youth violence.Rachael manages to keep the conversation lively despite the grave subject matter, sharing humorous anecdotes about initial misunderstandings surrounding childhood experiences and babysitters, weaving a narrative that draws parallels between their own stories and the film. The duo's chemistry shines as they effortlessly navigate from laughter to laughter, and deep discussions about heavy themes. As they wrap up the episode, Henrique and Rachael give solid recommendations for where viewers can catch the film, ensuring that fans of both horror and holiday cinema find ways to engage with *Better Watch Out*. They encourage listeners to embrace the madness of holiday horror, reminding everyone that, beneath the festive lights, danger can lurk in the most innocent of places. If you're interested in exploring more cinematic turmoil and psychological depth through the lens of horror, be sure to connect with them on their social media. Tune in as the program keeps the holiday season rolling onward for the second week of December! This time around, filmmaker friend Robyn Zabukovec (https://twitter.com/thefinalgirly?s=21) hops back into her guest seat for a breakdown of Better Watch Out, the 2016 Christmas horror-comedy that follows a 17-year-old babysitter and a couple adolescent boys as they try to fend off a home invasion during Christmastime. An arachnophobic actor summoning up the guts to work with real huntsman spiders on set, a PSA against drunk driving, and a thematic correlation that this movie may share with Adventure Time comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out stars Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic, Dacre Montgomery, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Warburton. This week Megan and Dave talk about director Luca Guadagnino's QUEER (2:28), an adaptation of William S. Burroughs 1985 novel (with a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes). Starring Daniel Craig as William Lee (a Burroughs stand-in), this movie left both Megan and Dave a little bewildered, as there were things they liked (the shooting-up scene, the color palette), and things they didn't like (Drew Starkey's performance as Lee's love interest). Then Evan joins in for FLOW (22:38) an excellent animated film featuring a very cat-like cat and other animals as they survive a catastrophic flood. Finally there's NIGHTBITCH (39:53). Amy Adams becomes a dog (though there's more to it than that) and Scoot McNairy becomes a dope (he's played this part before). What did we think of writer-director Marielle Heller's adaptation of Rachel Yoder's novel? Over on Patreon, we talk about the Christmas horror flick BETTER WATCH OUT.

In this very special Further Viewing episode, we're going to take a good look at one of the weirdest horror franchises to ever exist. After a controversial first offering and a so-bad-its-good sequel, the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT series inexplicably still managed to produce an additional three films, all released straight-to-video. While the first of these releases, SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 3: BETTER WATCH OUT! concludes the Ricky Caldwell storyline from the first two films, Parts 4 & 5 (INITIATION and THE TOYMAKER, respectively) tell standalone stories set against the backdrop of Christmas, courtesy of SOCIETY and BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR filmmaker Brian Yuzna. The story behind these sequels is as bizarre as the films themselves, so as a little added bonus to our recent Cinema Shock Christmas Special, our gift to you is an episode exploring the history behind the remainder of the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT franchise. Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. This episode was written, produced and edited by Gary Horne, and Justin Bishop.. When are you too old for a babysitter, and when is it ok to bully a child? And why should you never put an apology in writing? We answer these burning questions and celebrate the holiday season with 2016's Better Watch Out.
In today's episode, festive cheer gets a bloody makeover in Chris Peckover's Better Watch Out (2016) and Tyler MacIntyre's It's a Wonderful Knife (2023). A subgenre of horror that turns beloved seasonal traditions into nightmarish fodder, Christmas horror is rife with malevolent Santas, homicidal elves, and many, many angry snowmen. But what happens when the source of the horror in these films takes a much more human form? We're breaking it all down today with spoilers so stay tuned. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/horror-homeroom/support

A young blind woman is stalked by killer, Ricky Caldwell, who wakes up from a coma, and who she shared a psychic connection with.Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out is the 3rd movie we are reviewing this Christmas season and it's also the 3rd sequel in a series we argue doesn't need sequels. This film is definitely odd and features Bill Moseley as the re-casted Ricky Caldwell who hates everything about Christmas. He's a character who escapes a hospital and walks around town in a hospital gown, slippers, and an exposed brain. There are so many unanswered questions, but it's a wild ride. Watch the movie and catch our review. This week, we're kicking off our all-winter series for the month of December with the 2016 twisted home invasion horror Better Watch Out!
Seasons Greetings everyone! We're taking a month off franchises and raising our glasses to toast some of our favorite one off holiday and Christmas inspired horror movies. Up first we have the black comedy "home invasion" thriller from Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out. This is one of the more divisive titles we covered as fans either love how it subverts the viewers expectations when it pulls the rug out from them at the end of the first act, or they can't stand Luke, the smiling, slimy central antagonist that oozes privilege, sociopathy and toxic masculinity. All this wrapped in a package that subverts those warm and fuzzy memories of the John Hughes teen comedy and family friendly movies of the 80s and 90s. It's a fun discussion with Mike, Devaughn, Nichole and special guest Jason Seaver of the Boston Horror Society.
This week Mike is joined by Empire Magazine's Deputy Online Editor and Disniversity host Ben Travis to discuss two bonkers home invasion movies that aren't quite what they seem...HOUSEBOUND (2014) and BETTER WATCH OUT (2016).
