I have wondered, in my darker days, whether this portfolio career I love is truly sustainable. Whether I can really keep tweaking and evolving all the way until I stop. This interview gave me an inspiring YES! Hailed by Fanfare Magazine as "one of the great cellists of our time", Nancy Green is an internationally recognized recording artist, known for her highly acclaimed CDs of previously unrecorded works as well as staples of the cello repertoire. Her numerous CDs, which include many premieres, are broadcast worldwide and her performances have earned rave reviews internationally. Her CD recordings on the US label, JRI, and the British labels, Cello Classics and Biddulph Recordings, have received special notice in many major publications, among them Strings Magazine (Editor's Choice), MusicWeb International (CD of the Month), Fanfare Magazine (Want List), and Classical Music Magazine (CD of the Fortnight). Her recording of the Brahms sonatas with duo partner Frederick Moyer was named by Fanfare Magazine as the "hands-down pick" for these standard works which have been recorded, sometimes multiple times, by the most acclaimed cellists in history. Green has performed as soloist in venues such as the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, as well as London's Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Windsor Castle. She has also performed in major concert halls in Holland, Belgium, and the Far East. International press reviews have likened her to great cellists such as Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Jacqueline du Pré. Since 2015 Ms. Green no longer performs live and is exclusively a recording artist. Follow Nancy's YouTube, Spotify, Apple music, Instagram, or Facebook Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical! It started in Chicago, where Debra wrote and sang original musicals for her stuffed animals when she was very young. She began an illustrious theatrical career starring as Toto in a summer camp production of Wizard of Oz. Barely surviving head-to-toe fur in sweltering July heat, she already knew how to suffer for her art. https://debrawanger.com/ Debra studied acting at the nationally-acclaimed Piven Theatre Workshop with such talents as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and Jeremy Piven. Her vocal training began at the Northwestern University vocal department while still attending high school. She declined an opera scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory in order to study musical theatre at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM.) She took a quarter off to work for a few months in live theatre. Fifteen productions later, she returned to school and graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received a Masters of Fine Arts in musical theatre from San Diego State University, where she graduated Phi Kappa Phi as a Marion Ross Scholar. Debra has performed in regional theatres and cabaret clubs across the country, most frequently in Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, and South Florida. In Professionally Speaking at the Off-Broadway, The Miami Herald hailed her “a comic sparkplug.” Her role in Triumph of Love won a KPBS-TV Patté award. Her one-woman show My Nights With George, Kurt & Cole, (co-written and directed by comic genius, Phil Johnson) was featured at various venues throughout Southern California and won Best New Play and Best Actress at the 2003 San Diego Actors Festival, and the San Diego Playbill Billie Award for Best Actress in a musical. In 2019, Debra won a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award (Craig Noel) for Angels in America: Parts 1 & 2. Her CD, Driving My Own Heart is available on Amazon & iTunes. She took hiatus from performing to explore the “other side of the table.” As a talent manager and at Creative Artists Agency, under world-famous super-agent Michael Ovitz, she helped to guide the careers of such actors as Donald Sutherland, Patrick Dempsey, Halle Berry, Alyssa Milano, and Antonio Banderas. Having been yelled at by some of the most powerful players in Hollywood, she decided that performing was just as difficult, but a lot more fun. Debra is a Certified Bulletproof Human Potential Coach, studying in a year-long program with the Bulletproof Certified Coach Training Program with Dave Asprey & Dr. Mark Atkinson. As a coach, Debra specializes in helping actors & creative types find a healthy lifestyle balance while maintaining an exciting, satisfying creative career (it can be done!) Since tie immemorial, people have been telling stories. Storytelling has served as a way of building coherent, cohesive community. It is also a way to pass down wisdom from earlier generations for the benefit of future generations. The wisdom of storytelling could be applied to today's ecological challenges, such as climate change. But this has not occurred often enough. Ever since the invention of the printing press, the written word has rapidly eclipsed the voice of oral tradition— similarly, truth-telling, once the function of stories, has been largely usurped by modern science. Of course, oral storytelling has never gone away, and it continues to thrive even as it has shape-shifted into other forms, such as film, theatre, dance, hip hop, and spoken-word poetry. When it comes to climate change, there has been a rush to rely on modern science. Science is the accepted means for predicting and controlling the weather. But the discipline of climate science has a very short history. We have been only recording daily temperatures for less than a century-and-a-half. The oral tradition, on the other hand, has been recording changes to the climate for millennia. Virtually all cultures have flood stories that date back to the ending of the last Ice Age. Some stories date back to the Stone Age. Moreover, stories have long provided a means for living in harmony with all our relations. They teach not only by telling us what to do, but what not to do. We can learn from everyone and every creature—even if the only thing we learn is how to identify a bad example. During times of crises, the perennial wisdom of storytelling is needed more than ever. How can storytelling augment the work of climate science in understanding what is unfolding today? How can traditional stories provide the larger wisdom we need to reset our imbalance with the natural world? Join us as we explore the continuing relevance of storytelling today, with our guest storytellers Regina Ress and Valentina Ortiz. “We are hard-wired for story. We listen to story and parts of our brain light up…” ~ Regina Ress ________________________________ “The wisdom is in the old stories. After a Near-Death Experience following a high-speed car collision in 1991, Mary's lifelong ability to communicate with those in spirit, coupled with her gift to see future events, was enhanced by a new endowment: to touch an individual, “read their past” and facilitate healing. Now, through real-life hair raising stories, Mary Helen shows us that the source of our pain and suffering is not always rooted in present time, nor our current perceptions or belief systems. Mary Helen Hensley lives in Ireland, originally from VA and is currently sheltering in LA. She has also put together healing frequencies based on the sounds she hears when she is working on her patients. For instance, cancer, MS, grief, etc all have a certain frequency and she has learned how to use it with her tuning forks to assist people in healing. Her CD, Larimar Dreams, The Album, will be in the Grammy gift bag this year. Find out more about Mary Helen Hensley at: https://www.maryhelenhensley.com/

Long time Grammy Award-Winning music industry executive and personal manager, featured in VH-1s Behind the Music, Driven and the Biography Channel's on Guns 'N' Roses, Brett Michaels, and Mötley Crüe and the BBC series Born To Be Wild, The Golden Age Of American Rock. Considered one of the most successful music executives in the industry, Vicky has discovered, developed or managed the careers of Guns 'N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Faster Pussycat and many others. In 1988, David Geffen hired her as A&R executive at Geffen Records, where she stayed until 1992. She has also worked with famed manager Elliot Roberts at Lookout Management/ Vapor Records, before moving to Capitol Records as A&R consultant with longtime friend Gary Gersh. At the House of Blues after watching Johnny Cash perform, Rick Rubin (Def Jam, American, Columbia Records) suggested she make a record with June Carter Cash. Hamilton shopped June's demos around to all the major labels but there was a reluctance to sign this country legend. This is when Vicky started her own label Small Hairy Dog and gave June a label to call home. Her CD, Press On was released in 1999 and earned a Grammy Award in 2000. As Hamilton later stated, "I didn't plan on starting a record company, I just knew that June's music needed to be heard." Currently, Vicky owns and operates Aesthetic V management and productions, which represents and develops bands, artist and special projects. Her new documentary, Until The Music Ends is currently in production. Her two feature length scripts, Metal Maven and Gothic City are also complete and currently being shopped. Glitter Beach, the glam rock surf musical is in development, and has secured Hollywood "It" boy director, Daniel Henning. A new season of Celtic Christmas music begins with new episodes of the podcast featuring Celtic Christmas songs and tunes from The Rogues, Wicked Tinkers, Haggis Rampant, Bonnie Rideout, Angus Mohr, Rathkeltair. www.celticchristmaspodcast.com It is time once again to launch my Celtic Christmas Podcast. This is a 30 minute show where I play Celtic Christmas music and share a little bit about the Celtic bands on the show. If you have a Celtic band and want to submit music, visit our website, and I'll tell you more at the end of the show. If you have a Celtic podcast and would like to share your Christmas show with my audience, please contact me at celticpodcast@gmail.com My two-hour Best Bagpipe Music special of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was so popular earlier this month, I thought a show of Bagpipe Celtic Christmas music would be a great way to kick off the holiday season. This Week’s Celtic Christmas Music "Hellbound Sleigh" by The Rogues from Hellbound Sleigh Founded in Houston in 1994, The Rogues created a new genre of Celtic music with exceptionally, well-played pipes and driving percussion. The band's sound ranges from traditional pipes and drums to innovative textures incorporating whistles, keyboard and guitar, as well as many percussion instruments. Always present in The Rogues' music is that spirit that endears them to their audience. From technical precision to soaring melodies, a Rogues album and performance will move you to tears and get you dancing immediately afterwards. "Coventry Carol" by Wicked Tinkers from Slainte Happy Holidays Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Wicked Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds. "Kirkin' the Midwinter" by Haggis Rampant from The Silver Glens The first stirrings of Haggis Rampant appeared in the fall of 2000 at the first annual Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Steve was feeding his renfest habit while looking for places to practice on his loud instrument. His wife Pam played her bodhran with Steve on the last day of the 2000 run, and, much to his chagrin, the show was a hit. The group was completed with the addition of their daughter Gillian a few years later. Gillian has shown a talent for writing exquisite harmonies on the bagpipes and the good-natured father/daughter competitiveness makes them a fun team to watch. "Christmas Carousing/Ale Is Dear/New Christmas" by Bonnie Rideout from A Scottish Christmas Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. Her CD, "A Scottish Christmas" became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. She celebrates Christmas with this enthusiastic holiday performance that she takes on the road each year, playing at performing arts centers and large theaters nationwide in November and December. Rideout performs along with the Scottish Christmas Ensemble - a group of internationally renowned musicians including the City of Washington Pipe Band and dancers from the Scottish Highlands! Rideout and crew perform with spirit and gusto. This performance features Eric Rigler on Scottish smallpipes. "I Saw Three Ships" by Angus Mohr & Friends from A Christmas Pageant Just as watery mist remakes the world, and whisky remakes the man, Angus Mohr revitalizes the brogue of traditional Celtic music with an American blues accent and rejuvenates rock ’n roll’s broad spectrum with bagpipe and pennywhistles. No one is ever going to mistake Angus Mohr for a cover band. Sure, they play songs like “Foggy Dew,” the 1916 Easter Rising ballad, and “Whisky in the Jar,” a sixteenth century tale of love and betrayal, and their set list is peppered with songs penned by Dylan, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, and the Ramones. But you’ve never heard “Ring of Fire” or “I Wanna Be Sedated” until you’ve heard it with the pipes’ spiraling keen. The 2008 album from Angus Mohr is a departure from their usual sound! This Christmas album features an eclectic mix of styles, including everything from medieval carols to Chuck Berry! "Carols on 45" by Rathkeltair from Something Good for Christmas Rathkeltair blends compelling and catchy original songs with tight, driving straight-ahead rock-n-roll, while never forgetting its Celtic roots. Based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Rathkeltair has been on the road full-time since 2003. Highly regarded for its extraordinary energy, showmanship and professionalism, Rathkeltair enjoys a loyal and rapidly expanding community of friends and fans. In 2011, they released their album "Something Good for Christmas". It features over 45 minutes of Christmas classics , Original songs and tunes done Rathkeltair style for the holiday season! --- If you're in a Celtic band and you have recorded Christmas music, then please submit through at www.4Celts.com. Philip Shallcrass Part 2 of our Interview Greywolf inside Roundhouse In this part of the Interview Philip talks about the Celtic connections of Druidry, shamanism and sweat lodges and reveals how he got the name of 'Greywolf' Philip, Joe & Us - pic by Mike Shallcrass Song at Wodnesbeorg Philip Shallcrass The Sign of the Rose The Sign of the Rose is an album of songs, spells and invocations from BDO chief, Greywolf, aka Philip Shallcrass. "Beginning with an invocation to the old Saxon gods of Britain, it moves into ‘Song at Wodnesbeorg,’ a song inspired by Greywolf’s meeting with Woden on an ancient burial mound in North Wiltshire. Next is an invocation of Awen, the sacred, flowing spirit of inspiration in our tradition. This is followed by a hymn to the divine feminine, ‘Lady of the Greenwood.’ Track 5, ‘Lover’ and the title track, ‘The Sign of the Rose,’ are lyrical love songs. ‘Autumn Spell’ is a prayer for healing, followed by ‘Hel’s Embrace,’ reflecting on the dark side of relationships, while the next track, ‘A Perfect Mirror,’ deals with love’s ability to find itself reflected in another’s soul." "‘Slide’ is an out-and-out rocker with some bitchin’ slide guitar work. ‘Sacrifice’ muses on what we may or may not be willing to give, or give up, for love. ‘Thanks’ is an expression of gratitude for the sheer strangeness of being alive. The final track, the 12-minute epic, ‘The Sweet Sorrow,’ is a tragic tale of love and loss, based on a traditional Scots ballad of the same name, here given a makeover with layered harp, bass, percussion and strings." The Loughcrew Passage Tomb by "Voices From The Dawn" Cairn H and the Hag of Beare (An Cailleach Bhéara) Sliabh na Caillíghe constitutes a Neolithic necropolis, a passage-tomb cemetery with some evidence of at least thirty tombs, the grandest concentration of such monuments in Ireland. Over the centuries scores of others may have been destroyed with no trace remaining. Cairn T (pictured above) can be seen in a Virtual Reality tour on the Voices from the Dawn website. This is the Cairn that is illuminated by the Sun at the time of the Spring Equinox. Equinox illumination at the end of the Tomb The Hag of Beare The folktales of the ancient Hag of Beare were the stories that greeted Conwell, John O’Donovan, and Jonathan Swift before him. Other translations of "The Hag of Beare" can be found on Voices from the Dawn. The Hag's Chair The Hag's Chair (pictured above) has a deeply-incised cross carved into its seat was noted by Conwell as a nineteenth-century trigonometric mark, although others have claimed it to be an artifact of the monument’s use as a “Mass rock” during Penal times. You can also find out more about the project, and Howard Goldbaum, on our Contributor Page. Call of the Wildwoods by Brocc 13 Moons Brocc came into being over the summer of 2008 - a product of gales and rain in the woods and a badger who came to stay and has become our symbol. The songs we weave tell tales of myth and legend and the old beliefs of our lands and peoples. Our music is timeless, evocative of earlier, simpler times. The instruments reflect our love of forgotten timbres - we play English & Swedish bagpipes, woodwinds and recorders, the medieval hurdy-gurdy, mandola and laùd, and a host of percussion. Brocc's songs and tunes are mostly original, with some traditional material in our own distinctive arrangements. This beautiful track, Call of the Wild Woods, is a superb example of their style and versatility and comes for their latest album, 13 Moons. You can find out more about Brocc on their Website or on our Contributor Page. First half of our summary of the Irish Mythological Cycle In this show, we start to summarise the Irish Mythological Cycle as we've met it so far in the first 29 story episodes. Not only is this show finishing off a whole branch of Celtic Mythology, but it also celebrates the Autumn Equinox for 2011, so we've made it a real cracker and split it into two halves. We've got an epic poem, 4 great songs in this first half and we take a look at the Origins of the Manuscripts which these stories come from and highlight some of the themes we've noticed in the stories. This was the question we asked you: what themes do you think are the most important, and this show includes your ideas as well as ours. We conclude our examination of the Irish Mythological Cycle in the Second Part of this show which will be dropped into the feed and available for download 2-3 days after this one so you have chance to listen to the show and keep it fresh in the old brain box before we finish off the show with the end of the poem, the other observations we've made and yes more great music! The Diaries have been produced by Marq English at http://www.mevproductions.co.uk. Esther, Annie and George are 3 people whose lives have reached a crisis point. On the night of 31st October, all three find themselves drawn to a clearing in the woods. Secrets are revealed and nothing will ever be the same again as an ancient power emerges from the shadows… The Teaser Trailer Si Do Mhaimeo I by Anne McWiden Anne McWiden is a very talented musican and solo artist. She plays keyboard, flute, tin whistles, and sings. McWiden began her musical journey at the age of 9. From there, her father intruduced her to Celtic music. What makes Annie even more exceptional is the fact that she was born blind. While it has made things difficult as an artist, she's worked hard to excel in the field. She sings Gaelic and English traditional songs from both Ireland and Scotland. This song is called "She's Your Granny!" and we read out the English version in the AppExtra. For those without the App, you can find lyrics on this lyrics site. It's interesting to note that the word they translate as Granny is 'cailleach', which also means widow, old woman, crone, elder and so on and is of particular interest as we looked at the Celtic Hag Goddess in SP15 - Samhain 2009. You can find out more about Anne McWiden on her Contributor Page. Book of Invasion, Parts 1 & 2 by Greenwood the Bard Greenwood the Bard, aka Stephen Cole, has written much wonderful poetry and we're very privileged to bring you his "Book of Invasions" epic saga that re-tells the story of the Invasions of Erin. Check out his Facebook page for more of his wonderful poetry, the poetry pages on paganspace.net and mysticchrist.co.uk where we're waiting for his posts to start appearing. Morfa'r Frevhines by Dark Patrick Founded by Ukrainian Eva and Englishman Paul, musicians with experience touring in Great Britain and Ukraine, international ethnic-fusion project Dark Patrick is gaining speed, taking part in all the biggest Ukrainian folk festivals. Each member of the group has mastery of several modern and folk instruments (often playing more than one at once). Morfa'r Frenhines from their album Fáinne Geal an Lae (The Dawning of the Day) is a Welsh melody and means "The Queen's Marsh" often misquoted as the Queen's March. It is an old traditional Welsh harp tune and its haunting melody stays with you long after you've heard it. On the Show, Gary gets this tune confused with the title of the album and the track of that name Fáinne Geal an Lae, which is an old Irish air composed by the blind harpist Thomas Connellan in the 17th Century. An Irish-language song with this name (Fáinne Geal an Lae) was published by Edward Walsh (1805-1850) in 1847 in Irish Popular Songs and later translated into English as The Dawning of the Day. The melody of this song was used by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh for his poem, "On Raglan Road". Raglan Road has been performed by a number of notable artists including: The Dubliners, Sinéad O'Connor, Luke Kelly and Mark Knopfler. This song also goes by the Irish name Fáinne Geal an Lae - literally "The bright ring of the day." It is often played as a march and is one of the first tunes that a student of Irish music will learn. This is an Aisling where the poet encounters a mysterious beautiful woman who symbolises Ireland - Cáit Ní Dhuibhir, Caitlín Ní Uallacháin, Róisín Dubh etc. In this case, she upbraids him as a frivolous rake and points to the approaching dawn (of freedom from English rule). At the end of the Desmond Rebellions and Nine Years' War, Irish poets were facing their own elimination as a matter of deliberate English policy. [wiki] You can read more about this original and fascinating Celtic music on Dark Patrick's website or on their Contributor Page. Dating the original Irish Manuscripts We then go on to discuss the origins of the Irish Mythological Cycle and when the original manuscripts can be dated back to. The Raven by Rick Allen An immortal voice and talent. The lyrical, bardic poetry of a Celtic warrior and spiritual seeker, this recording of Rick Allen's unforgettable voice, accompanied by the musical gifts of The Constant Cohorts, brings the listener back to the days of yore when Druids thrived, the Green Man freely roamed the land, passionate Love was a path to the Mysteries, the Muse was a Lady in White, “. . . and men were true.” This is Rick's version of the great "The Raven" by Gwydion Pendderwen. Please visit our Contributor Page to learn more about Rick Allen's story. Full Height of Our Power by Kellianna Kellianna is an accomplished musician and performer worldwide. Her CD's, Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. Her live shows are a combination of acoustic guitar songs and chants to the God and Goddess. This track, the Full Height of our Power, is from her new album Elemental which is, as we come to expect from Kellianna, superb. Learn more about Kellianna on her website or on her Contributor Page. Had a lot of fun recording this week's show, as is obvious from the number of edits that were made to keep it on-topic and down to the time allotted. I've often felt that featured artist Cara Jean Wahlers' first appearance on the show failed to properly capture her warm, energetic personality -- though, arguably, that was by design, since that episode was dedicated to her Big Roots Show and not her own music. I'm glad that, almost two years later, I finally got the chance to have her back on to fix that particular oversight and showcase some of the new material she alluded to back then. Though traditionally a background and session player, those of us who have caught Cara Jean at her solo shows around town have known of her incredible singing and songwriting ability for a while now, and it's great to finally have some of it captured on an album (and podcast). Goodnight Charlotte, her first release with cellist Grover Parido, beautifully melds Cara Jean's atmospheric guitar, poetic lyrics, and delicate voice with Grover's unmatched ability to add richness and depth to a song as both a background and as a lead instrument, while at the same time never overpowering the other players and voices. The result is a beautiful, textured trip through a range of images, stories, and emotions that is as lush in tone as it is intelligent. As if all that weren't enough, we have another first for Indy In-Tune this week: a podcast partially dedicated to original Indiana music in film. Andie Redwine joins us to talk about her movie, Paradise Recovered, which premieres at the Heartland Film Festival this coming weekend. The film features music from a number of Indiana recording artists, including of course Cara Jean Wahlers and Grover Parido. With the film already garnering interest from Heartland, the Austin Film Festival, and a few other indie film showcases around the country, the boost of exposure for local, original music is almost as exciting as the success of the film itself. Extra special thanks to (located just east of 56th and Keystone) -- a long-time favorite venue of ours and staunch supporter of local, original music (as well as Indy In-Tune) -- for their gracious hospitality and a complimentary round of drinks for the guests.
Arthurian Special - The Ladies of the Grail This is the Autumn Equinox Holiday Special, and we're also bringing you (in association with Druidcast and Damh the Bard), a special Lecture by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham on "The Ladies of the Grail". Dr Rotherham is an acknowledged expert and scholar in the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. In this wonderful talk he revels how the ladies of the Grail have considerably more importance in the legends than the Knights themselves! Not a talk to be missed! In typical Celtic fashion, he explains how the Grail is one of *three* items of great importance and reveals that the origins of the Grail Legends may be a lot older than previously thought. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but also an extremely entertaining lecturer. We round off the show with three pieces of Arthurian music and gratefully pass our thanks on to Damh and Dr. Rotherham for their respective permissions to use this material. We hope you enjoy this treat as much as we did. Her CD's, Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. Her live shows are a combination of acoustic guitar songs and chants to the God and Goddess. "Morgana was created after I read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" for the third time. The lyrics were completed upon my return from the Ancient Isle of Avalon in Glastonbury, England. Being in Avalon and on the Tor, I could easily imagine Morgan losing her way in the mists and traveling to the Fairy World. She was strong and always emerged from the magical realm to her beloved Avalon." You can find out more about Kellianna on her website or on her Contributor Page. Many A Knight by Kim Thomsett Urban Dryad Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Her songs have an escapist quality which evokes the England of old with hints of Celtic, medieval and the classic folk artists of the ‘60’s and 70’s. This song, Many a Knight, is from her debut album, Urban Dryad which can be heard on last.fm. Her latest superb album is Songs from the Uglee Meadow. The album title is inspired by a serene and beautiful place in East Sussex called the Uglee Meadow. The album features musicians such as Will Summers from Circulus on recorders, flutes and crumhorn and Philip Martin (alias Drohne) on hurdy gurdy. You can find out all about Kim on her website or her Contributor Page on our site. The Ladies of the Grail by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham Dr Roland Rotherham B.A.hons, M.A, Ph.D., Ed.D, M.I.H.G.S. holds degrees in Ancient and Medieval studies, Anglo-Saxon Culture, Heraldry, Anglo-Norman Culture, Ancient and Medieval Cultural Studies, and Education. He is a member of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, and The Fellowship Of The Knights Of The Round Table Of King Arthur. He says: Many people are aware of the legends relating to this relic and its importance in the "Quest" but the actual story regarding the possible origin of The Grail is as complex as the legends that surround it. Firstly we can look at the Celtic Grail with its dark mysticism and the stories of the cauldron of Annwn, a magical vessel that belonged to the mythical Giant/King Bran The Blessed, this was one of the earliest legends and tells us of a great cauldron that, if a dead warrior was placed into it at the end of a day he would rise again in the morning live and well but without the power of speech. There also exists a tale of the Celtic Cauldron of Knowledge, one taste from this vessel and all wisdom past, present, and future is the gift of the tasters, this also links with the tale of Taliesin. You can find out more about the Professor on his Contributor Page. The Winter King by Damh the Bard Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Yeats W. B. Yeats William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and English literary establishments, in his later years Yeats served as an Irish Senator for two terms. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and together with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn founded the Abbey Theatre, and served as its chief during its early years. In 1923, he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation;" and he was the first Irishman so honored. Maud Gonne Originally published in the Weekly Critical Review on 4th June 1903, The Rider from the North was later called The Happy Townland. This poem was read from In The Seven Woods which can be found at Sacred Texts, subtitled Being poems chiefly of the Irish Heroic Age. Light by Sora Sora (aka Andrea Hunt) is an independent musician with a different philosophy on how she wants to share her music with the world. Perhaps it was all of the touring she did as a teenager with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Calgary Fiddlers that made her appreciate the subtleties of having a solid home base. It may have been the influence of playing with elite musicians and performing to sell out crowds that seeded her desire to mold a new musical lifestyle. Her natural flair for Celtic vocal styling leaps out in her 2003 debut CD “Winds Of Change”. On this self produced project all 13 tracks were recorded live off the floor. “What you hear is what we did” Sora says. “Everyone was in the same small room at the same time”. The arrangements for each song were chosen specifically because they were so different from anything she had ever heard – which gave her the chance to put her heart and sound into each track. You can find her music on Myspace or Corvid Media. You can find out more details about Sora on her Contributor Page on our website. The Meester Stoorworm by Katherine Pyle A Scottish folk tale from a collection of tales by Katherine Pyle and illustrated by herself. Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We discuss news that listener Jason tells us about - new stone circle in Australia and a similar one being constructed near us, at Knockhatch. The Australian Standing Stones began as an ambitious project by a small, dedicated group of citizens who wanted to mark Glen Innes's Celtic heritage. It was in Australia's 1988 Bicentenary Year that the Celtic Council of Australia developed the idea of erecting a national monument to honour all Celtic peoples who helped pioneer Australia. Glen Innes responded with a 46-page submission for Australian Standing Stones, inspired by the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland's Orkneys. Australian Standing Stones Alignment Details Sussex Peace Circle Peace Stones the Out of the Ordinary Festival Kesh Jig by The Connemara Stone Company The Connemara Stone Company have been together since 1995, and all played previously in various Folk-Rock Groups, which is soon obvious when you see them live on stage. Right from the start they decided to rearrange Traditional Celtic music into modern Folk-Rock songs and tunes. Apart from that, it was very important to them to bring Folk music to the younger generation. To their surprise not only did the younger generation like their music. This was more as apparent as they played a concert with “Wishbone Ash”, the audience being (putting it mildly) a little bit older. They have kindly given us permission to play a wonderful piece of foot-tapping music, called the Kesh Jig from their album, Birds & Beasts. See the Myspace page and hear more music or visit their homepage, Connemara Stone. Lughnasadh: The Land Gives Birth by Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson have collected essays from Celtic scholars to form a fascinating book that helps to explain the difference between Celtic fact (what we actually know) from Celtic fiction (what we speculate). Sadly, the book has never been published and Francine passed away in 2003. Shae has enabled the book to be published on the web. Francine Nicholson, M.A., was a librarian in New England and scholar of all things Celtic. The loss of her passing, perhaps appropriately on 1 February 2003 (Imbolc), is poignantly crystallised by fellow Celtic scholar, David Stifter: 'It is very sad news to hear that Francine Nicholson has left us. She had a vast and astounding erudition and knowledge of Celtic mythology and folklore, and her contributions . . . were a great source of enrichment and information. I feel it as a heavy loss that she will no longer contribute to our discussions.' Lughnasadh by Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find his music on iTunes, Woven Wheat Whispers or from his website, Pagan Music. White Rose of Avalon by Kelley Heckart Kelley Heckart lives in Arizona with her husband, Michael, and their two dogs, Hercules and Xena. Kelley was born with a vivid imagination and a fascination with ancient history and the supernatural. Though she resides on the earthly realm, she always has one foot firmly planted in the otherworldly realm of mystical creatures and magic. She has written numerous short stories and song lyrics. This is her first novel. In addition to writing books, she also enjoys playing and writing music, and designing crosses out of driftwood. Currently, she is working on a sequel to Of Water and Dragons. Of Water and Dragons can be found on her website, www.kelleyheckart.com, www.amazon.com, www.booksurge.com and many other online stores. If your local bookstore doesn't have it in stock, it can easily be ordered. With the land falling into Saxon hands, the Christian monks make a pact with Morgaine, Queen of the Faeries. She promises to give them a High King who will unite the Britons against the Saxons if he takes a queen from the faery realm. She hopes this will restore the Goddess faith, bringing Avalon back to its rightful place and not hidden within the mists. Lancelot is sent to guard the future High King, but when a love potion falls into the wrong hands, all seems lost. Gwenhwyfar is the only hope for the future, but betrayal, revenge and forbidden love surround her, threatening to destroy the lives of four people, and send Britain and Avalon into ruins. Thank you to Kelley for contributing her story to the show - we can't wait to read this lusty tale. For more information about Kelley and her books, see our Contributor Page. Summer has returned to Vancouver! This evening we heard from several bands who will be at this weekend's Mission Folk Festival, also a phone interview with Jeremiah McDade of The McDades. Special guest in the studio, banjo in hand, was Linda McRae. Her CD release/moving to Nashville party happens Saturday at the Railway Club - get down there if you can! Thanks as always for listening, and stay cool..val folkoasis@gmail.com
